Motivated by notions from coding theory, we study the generalized minimum distance (GMD) function $δ_I(d,r)$ of a graded ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring over an arbitrary field using commutative algebraic methods. It is shown that $δ_I$ is non-decreasing as a function of $r$ and non-increasing as a function of $d$. For vanishing ideals over finite fields, we show that $δ_I$ is strictly decreasing as a function of $d$ until it stabilizes. We also study algebraic invariants of Geramita ideals. Those ideals are graded, unmixed, $1$-dimensional and their associated primes are generated by linear forms. We also examine GMD functions of complete intersections and show some special cases of two conjectures of Tohăneanu--Van Tuyl and Eisenbud-Green-Harris.
Equivalent matrices up to permutations
Given two $k\times n$ matrices $A$ and $B$, we describe a couple of methods to solve the matrix equation $XA=BY$, where $X$ is an invertible $k\times k$ matrix, and $Y$ is an $n\times n$ permutation matrix, both of which we want to determine. We are interested in pursuing those techniques that have algebraic geometric flavor. An application to solving such a matrix equation comes from the cryptanalysis of McEliece cryptosystem. By using codewords of minimum weight of a linear code, in concordance with these methods of solving $XA=BY$, we present an efficient way to determine the entire encryption keys for the McEliece cryptosystems built on Reed-Solomon codes.
Free arrangements with low exponents
In this article we show that any free hyperplane arrangement with exponents 1's and 2's is a supersolvable arrangement. We conjecture that any free arrangement with exponents 1's, 2's and exactly one 3, is also supersolvable, and we show this conjecture for hyperplane arrangements of ranks 4 and 5, and for inductively free arrangements of any rank.

Let ${\mathcal C}= \bigcup_{i=1}^n C_i \subseteq \mathbb{P}^2$ be a collection of smooth rational plane curves. We prove that the addition-deletion operation used in the study of hyperplane arrangements has an extension which works for a large class of arrangements of smooth rational curves, giving an inductive tool for understanding the freeness of the module $Ω^1({\mathcal C})$ of logarithmic differential forms with pole along ${\mathcal C}$. We also show that the analog of Terao's conjecture (freeness of $Ω^1({\mathcal C})$ is combinatorially determined if ${\mathcal C}$ is a union of lines) is false in this setting.
