Fano compactifications of mutation algebras
In this article, we introduce the notion of mutation semigroup algebras. This concept simultaneously generalizes cluster algebras and semigroup algebras. We show that, under some mild conditions on the singularities, the spectrum $U={\rm Spec}(R)$ of a mutation semigroup algebra $R$ admits a log Fano compactification $U\hookrightarrow X$. The compactification $X$ can be chosen to be a $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial log Fano variety whenever $U$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial. Furthermore, we prove that a $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial klt Fano variety $X$ is of cluster type if and only if its Cox ring ${\rm Cox}(X)$ is a ${\rm Cl}(X)$-graded mutation semigroup algebra. In order to enlighten the previous theorems, we provide several explicit examples motivated by birational geometry, representation theory, and combinatorics.
Reflexive polytopes and the Picard ranks of Gorenstein toric Fano varieties
We prove that the sum of the Picard ranks of a polar pair of Gorenstein toric Fano varieties of dimension $d\geq 3$ is at most the minimum of the number of facets and vertices of the corresponding pair of reflexive polytopes minus $(d-1)$. This is a generalization of Eikelberg's theory of affine dependences describing the Picard groups of toric varieties. The upper bound is achieved if and only if the polar pair is a simple-simplicial pair.
On Covering Simplices by Dilations in Dimensions 3 and 4
We propose a conjecture regarding the integrally closedness of lattice polytopes with large lattice lengths. We demonstrate that a lattice simplex in dimension 3 (resp. 4) with lattice length of at least 2 (resp. 3 and no edge has lattice length 5) can be covered by dilated simplices of the form $sQ$, where integer $s\ge 2$ (resp. 3) and $Q$ is a lattice simplex. The covering property implies these simplices are integrally closed. As an application, we obtain a simple criterion for the projective normality of ample line bundles on 3-(resp. 4-) dimensional $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial toric Fano varieties with Picard number one. Along the way, we discover certain unexpected phenomenon.
Hodge Theory of Hypersurfaces in Toric Varieties and Recent Developments in Quantum Physics
This is the author's Habilitation which took place at University of Essen on July 11, 1993. The manuscript contains two parts. The first one is devoted to the author's combinatorial construction of mirrors of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. The second one contains author's results on the variation of mixed Hodge structures of affine hypersurfaces in algebraic tori and their connection to Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky theory of generalized hypergeometric functions and their applications to the mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties.

A directed edge polytope $\mathcal{A}_G$ is a lattice polytope arising from root system $A_n$ and a finite directed graph $G$. If every directed edge of $G$ belongs to a directed cycle in $G$, then $\mathcal{A}_G$ is terminal and reflexive, that is, one can associate this polytope to a Gorenstein toric Fano variety $X_G$ with terminal singularities. It is shown by Totaro that a toric Fano variety which is smooth in codimension $2$ and $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial in codimension $3$ is rigid. In the present paper, we classify all directed graphs $G$ such that $X_G$ is a toric Fano variety which is smooth in codimension $2$ and $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial in codimension $3$.
Gorenstein Fano toric degenerations
We propose a refined but natural notion of toric degenerations that respect a given embedding and show that within this framework a Gorenstein Fano variety can only be degenerated to a Gorenstein Fano toric variety if it is embedded via its anticanonical embedding. This also gives a precise criterion for reflexive polytopes to appear, which might be required for applications in mirror symmetry. For the proof of this statement we will study polytopes whose polar dual is a lattice polytope. As a byproduct we generalize a connection between the number of lattice points in a rational convex polytope and the Euler characteristic of an associated torus invariant rational Weil divisor, allowing us to show that Ehrhart-Macdonald Reciprocity and Serre Duality are equivalent statements for a broad class of varieties. Additionally, we conjecture a necessary and sufficient condition for the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational convex polytope to be a polynomial. Finally, we show that the anticanonical line bundle on a Gorenstein Fano variety with at worst rational singularities is uniquely determined by a combinatorial condition of its Hilbert polynomial.

Smooth tropical cubic surfaces are parametrized by maximal cones in the unimodular secondary fan of the triple tetrahedron. There are $344\, 843 \,867$ such cones, organized into a database of $14\,373\,645$ symmetry classes. The Schläfli fan gives a further refinement of these cones. It reveals all possible patterns of lines on tropical cubic surfaces, thus serving as a combinatorial base space for the universal Fano variety. This article develops the relevant theory and offers a blueprint for the analysis of big data in tropical geometry.

Let $Δ$ be a $3$-dimensional lattice polytope containing exactly one interior lattice point. We give a simple combinatorial formula for computing the stringy $E$-function of the $3$-dimensional canonical toric Fano variety $X_Δ$ associated with the polytope $Δ$. Using the stringy Libgober-Wood identity and our formula, we generalize the well-known combinatorial identity $\sum_{θ\preceq Δ\atop \dim (θ) =1} v(θ) \cdot v(θ^*) = 24$ holding in the case of $3$-dimensional reflexive polytopes $Δ$.

In this paper, we prove that a Gorenstein toric Fano variety $(X, -K_{X})$ is asymptotically Chow semistable then it is Ding polystable with respect to toric test configurations (Theorem 1.3). This extends the known result obtained by others (Theorem 1.2) to the case where $X$ admits Gorenstein singularity. We also show the additivity of the Mabuchi constant for the product toric Fano varieties in Proposition 1.5 based on the author's recent work (Ono, Sano and Yotsutani in arXiv:2305.05924). Applying this formula to certain toric Fano varieties, we construct infinitely many examples that clarify the difference between relative K-stability and relative Ding stability in a systematic way (Proposition 1.4). Finally, we verify relative Chow stability for Gorenstein toric del Pezzo surfaces using the combinatorial criterion developed in (Yotsutani and Zhou in Tohoku Math. J. 71 (2019), 495-524.) and specifying the symmetry of the associated polytopes as well.
The wall-crossing formula and Lagrangian mutations

We prove a general form of the wall-crossing formula which relates the disk potentials of monotone Lagrangian submanifolds with their Floer-theoretic behavior away from a Donaldson divisor. We define geometric operations called mutations of Lagrangian tori in del Pezzo surfaces and in toric Fano varieties of higher dimension, and study the corresponding wall-crossing formulas that compute the disk potential of a mutated torus from that of the original one.
In the case of del Pezzo surfaces, this justifies the connection between Vianna's tori and the theory of mutations of Landau-Ginzburg seeds. In higher dimension, this provides new Lagrangian tori in toric Fanos corresponding to different chambers of the mirror variety, including ones which are conjecturally separated by infinitely many walls from the chamber containing the standard toric fibre.

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the nonsingular projective toric variety associated to a building set to be weak Fano in terms of the building set.

We give an upper bound on the volume vol(P*) of a polytope P* dual to a d-dimensional lattice polytope P with exactly one interior lattice point, in each dimension d. This bound, expressed in terms of the Sylvester sequence, is sharp, and is achieved by the dual to a particular reflexive simplex. Our result implies a sharp upper bound on the volume of a d-dimensional reflexive polytope. Translated into toric geometry, this gives a sharp upper bound on the anti-canonical degree $(-K_X)^d$ of a d-dimensional toric Fano variety X with at worst canonical singularities.

There exist exactly 166 4-dimensional reflexive polytopes such that the corresponding 4-dimensional Gorenstein toric Fano varieties have at worst terminal singularities in codimension 3 and their anticanonical divisor is divisible by 2. For every such a polytope, one naturally obtains a family of Fano hypersurfaces X with at worst conifold singularities. A generic 3-dimensional Fano hypersurface X can be interpreted as a flat conifold degeneration of some smooth Fano 3-folds Y whose classification up to deformation was obtained by Iskovskikh, Mori and Mukai. In this case, both Fano varieties X and Y have the same Picard number r. Using toric mirror symmetry, we define a r-dimensional generalized hypergeometric power series associated to the dual reflexive polytope. We show that if r =1 then this series is a normalized regular solution of a modular D3-equation that appears in the Golyshev correspondence. We expect that the multidimensional power series can be used to compute the small quantum cohomology ring of all Fano 3-folds Y with the Picard number r >1 if Y admit a conifold degeneration X.

In this paper we construct infinitely many examples of toric Fano varieties with Picard number three, which do not admit full exceptional collections of line bundles. In particular, this disproves King's conjecture for toric Fano varieties.
More generally, we prove that for any constant $c>\frac34$ there exist infinitely many toric Fano varieties $Y$ with Picard number three, such that the maximal length of exceptional collection of line bundles on $Y$ is strictly less than $c\rk K_0(Y).$ To obtain varieties without exceptional collections of line bundles, it suffices to put $c=1.$
On the other hand, we prove that for any toric nef-Fano DM stack $Y$ with Picard number three, there exists a strong exceptional collection of line bundles on $Y$ of length at least $\frac34 \rk K_0(Y).$ The constant $\frac34$ is thus maximal with this property.
