Matroid analogues of Gal's conjecture
Well-known conjectures of Charney--Davis, Gal, and Nevo--Petersen predict increasingly strong positivity phenomena for the h-vectors of flag simplicial spheres. In this paper, we formulate and prove matroid analogues of these conjectures in the setting of Chow polynomials of matroids with building sets. Our proofs rely on toric geometry and make crucial use of tropical intersection theory. We begin by introducing complete building sets, a class encompassing all maximal building sets and other important families such as minimal building sets of braid matroids. For matroids with complete building sets, we analyze the Chow rings of the associated toric varieties, and prove that their Hilbert--Poincaré polynomials are gamma-positive. From this analysis, we derive a combinatorial formula for the coefficients of the gamma-expansion, and use it to explicitly construct a simplicial complex $Γ$, whose f-vector coincides with the gamma-vector. This establishes a matroid analogue of the Nevo--Petersen conjecture. When the building set is maximal, we further prove that $Γ$ is balanced, confirming the strongest such analogue in this case. As an application, we obtain a new combinatorial formula for the gamma-expansion of the Poincaré polynomial of the Deligne--Mumford--Knudsen compactification $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, and derive several novel numerical inequalities for its coefficients. We also study the toric varieties of matroids with flag building sets, another class containing maximal building sets as well as several other prominent families. We prove that the Hilbert--Poincaré polynomials of these toric varieties are gamma-positive. This result establishes matroid analogues of the Charney--Davis and Gal conjectures, and simultaneously extends several recent gamma-positivity results for Chow polynomials.

Deligne--Lusztig varieties, toric orbifolds, and the $q$-Klyachko algebra
We investigate the geometry behind the $q$-Klyachko algebra, introduced by Nadeau--Tewari. When $q$ is a prime power, we show that the $q$-Klyachko algebra is the image of the pullback map on Chow rings $\mathrm{CH}(\mathrm{Fl}_{n+1})\to\mathrm{CH}(\mathrm{DL}_n)$, where $\mathrm{DL}_n\subseteq \mathrm{Fl}_n$ is a compactified Deligne--Lusztig variety inside the complete flag variety $\mathrm{Fl}_{n+1}$. When $q$ is a positive rational number, we establish a Kähler package for the $q$-Klyachko algebra through inputs from toric geometry.

Birational morphisms in quantum toric geometry
In this paper, we investigate birational toric morphisms between quantum toric stacks -- namely, toric (analytic) stacks associated with fans whose cones may be irrational -- focusing on two primary classes of examples: weighted blow-ups with arbitrary weights, and morphisms induced by cobordisms.
Torus Actions on Matrix Schubert and Kazhdan-Lusztig Varieties, and their Links to Statistical Models
We investigate the toric geometry of two families of generalised determinantal varieties arising from permutations: Matrix Schubert varieties ($\overline{X_w}$) and Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties ($\mathcal{N}_{v,w}$). Matrix Schubert varieties can be written as $\overline{X_w} = Y_w \times \mathbb C^d$, where $d$ is maximal. We are especially interested in the structure and complexity of these varieties $Y_w$ and $\mathcal{N}_{v,w}$ under the so-called usual torus actions. In the case when $Y_w$ is toric, we provide a full characterisation of the simple reflections $s_i$ that render ${Y_{w \cdot s_i}}$ toric, as well as the corresponding changes to the weight cone. For Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, we consider how moving one of the two permutations $v,w$ along a chain in the Bruhat poset affects their complexity. Additionally, we study the complexity of these varieties, for permutations $v$ and $w$ of a specific structure. Finally, we consider the links between these determinantal varieties and two classes of statistical models; namely conditional independence and quasi-independence models.

Graded Ehrhart theory and toric geometry
We give two new constructions of the harmonic algebra of a lattice polytope $P$, a bigraded algebra whose character is the $q$-Ehrhart series of $P$ defined by Reiner and Rhoades. First, we show that the harmonic algebra is the associated graded algebra of the semigroup algebra of $P$ with respect to a certain natural filtration, clarifying it's relationship with the more classical semigroup algebra. We then give a geometric interpretation of the harmonic algebra as a quotient of the ring of global sections of a certain family of line bundles on the blowup of the toric variety associated to $P$ at a generic point. Using this connection to toric geometry we resolve one the main conjectures of Reiner and Rhoades by showing that the harmonic algebra is not finitely generated in general.
Good Triangulations of Cosmological Polytopes
Cosmological polytopes of graphs are a geometric tool in physics to study wavefunctions for cosmological models whose Feynman diagram is given by the graph. After their recent introduction by Arkani-Hamed, Benincasa and Postnikov the focus of interest shifted towards their mathematical properties, e.g., their face structure and triangulations. Juhnke, Solus and Venturello used toric geometry to show that these polytopes have a so-called good triangulation that is unimodular. Based on these results Bruckamp et al. studied the Ehrhart theory of those polytopes and in particular the h*-polynomials of cosmological polytopes of multitrees and multicycles. In this article we complete this part of the story. We enumerate all maximal simplices in good triangulations of any cosmological polytope. Furthermore, we provide a method to turn such a triangulation into a half-open decomposition from which we deduce that the h*-polynomial of a cosmological polytope is a specialization of the Tutte polynomial of the defining graph. This settles several open questions and conjectures of Juhnke, Solus and Venturello as well as Bruckamp et al.

Unimodular Smooth Fano Polytopes and their Relation with Ewald Conditions
Smooth Fano polytopes (SFP) play an important role in toric geometry and combinatorics. In this paper, we introduce a specific subcollection of them, i.e., the unimodular smooth Fano polytopes (USFP). In Section 2, they are verified to satisfy the three (weak, strong, star) Ewald conditions. Besides, a characterisation of USFPs is provided as a corollary of the famous Seymour's decomposition theorem. Then, we briefly introduce the works by Luis Crespo on deeply monotone polytopes and give a proof of the claim that any deeply monotone polytope is in fact the dual polytope of some USFP. In other words, we extend his results on deeply monotone polytopes to the case of USFPs.

4d Crystal Melting, Toric Calabi-Yau 4-Folds and Brane Brick Models
We introduce a class of 4-dimensional crystal melting models that count the BPS bound state of branes on toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. The crystalline structure is determined by the brane brick model associated to the Calabi-Yau 4-fold under consideration or, equivalently, its dual periodic quiver. The crystals provide a discretized version of the underlying toric geometries. We introduce various techniques to visualize crystals and their melting configurations, including 3-dimensional slicing and Hasse diagrams. We illustrate the construction with the D0-D8 system on $\mathbb{C}^4$. Finally, we outline how our proposal generalizes to arbitrary toric CY 4-folds and general brane configurations.

Ewald's Conjecture and integer points in algebraic and symplectic toric geometry
We solve several open problems concerning integer points of polytopes arising in symplectic and algebraic geometry. In this direction we give the first proof of a broad case of Ewald's Conjecture (1988) concerning symmetric integral points of monotone lattice polytopes in arbitrary dimension. We also include an asymptotic quantitative study of the set of points appearing in Ewald's Conjecture. Then we relate this work to the problem of displaceability of orbits in symplectic toric geometry. We conclude with a proof for the $2$-dimensional case, and for a number of cases in higher dimensions, of Nill's Conjecture (2009), which is a generalization of Ewald's conjecture to smooth lattice polytopes. Along the way the paper introduces two new classes of polytopes which arise naturally in the study of Ewald's Conjecture and symplectic displaceability: neat polytopes, which are related to Oda's Conjecture, and deeply monotone polytopes.

The structure of monotone blow-ups in symplectic toric geometry and a question of McDuff
Monotone polytopes, also known as smooth reflexive polytopes, are the polytopes associated to monotone symplectic toric manifolds and Gorenstein Fano toric varieties. We first show that the only monotone polytopes admitting blow-ups at vertices are the simplex and the result of a codimension-two blow-up in it (this is the polyhedral version of a result of Bonavero from 2002). Then we show that the $n$-simplex admits disjoint blow-ups at faces if and only if the faces are disjoint and have dimensions adding up to $n-1$ or $n-2$. These results answer a question posed by Dusa McDuff in 2011.

Rational tensegrities through the lens of toric geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
A classical tensegrity model consists of an embedded graph in a vector space with rigid bars representing edges, and an assignment of a stress to every edge such that at every vertex of the graph the stresses sum up to zero. The tensegrity frameworks have been recently extended from the two dimensional graph case to the multidimensional setting. We study the multidimensional tensegrities using tools from toric geometry. For a given rational tensegrity framework $\mathcal{F}$, we construct a glued toric surface $X_\mathcal{F}$. We show that the abelian group of tensegrities on $\mathcal{F}$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of the Chow group $A^1(X_\mathcal{F};\QQ)$. In the case of planar frameworks, we show how to explicitly carry out the computation of tensegrities via classical tools in toric geometry.

Matrix Models, Integral Polyhedra and Toric Geometry
We propose to take a look at a new approach to the study of integral polyhedra. The main idea is to give an integral representation, or matrix model representation, for the key combinatorial characteristics of integral polytopes. Based on the well-known geometric interpretations of matrix model digram techniques, we construct a new model that enumerates triangulations, subdivisions, and numbers of integral points of integral polygons. This approach allows us to look at their combinatorics from a new perspective, motivated by knowledge about matrix models and their integrability. We show how analogs of Virasoro constraints appear in the resulting model. Moreover, we make a natural generalization of this matrix model to the case of polytopes of an arbitrary dimension, considering already a tensor model. We also obtain an analogue of Virasoro constraints for it and discuss their role in the solvability of these models. The deep connection between the geometry of convex polyhedra and toric geometry is the main reference point in the construction of these models. We present considerations on specific ways of applying this approach to the description of Batyrev's mirror pairs. All this allows us to formulate many interesting directions in the study of the connection between matrix/tensor models and the geometry of toric varieties.

Toric Quasifolds
Published in Math. Intelligencer, 45 (2022), 133-138 • View PublicationBIB
Toric quasifolds are highly singular spaces that were first introduced in order to address, from the symplectic viewpoint, the longstanding open problem of extending the classical constructions of toric geometry to those simple convex polytopes that are not rational. We illustrate toric quasifolds, and their atlases, by describing some notable examples. We conclude with a number of considerations.

BFT$_2$: a General Class of $2d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ Theories, 3-Manifolds and Toric Geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and initiate the study of a general class of $2d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ quiver gauge theories, defined in terms of certain 2-dimensional CW complexes on oriented 3-manifolds. We refer to this class of theories as BFT$_2$$\mbox{'}$s. They are natural generalizations of Brane Brick Models, which capture the gauge theories on D1-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. The dynamics and triality of the gauge theories translate into simple transformations of the underlying CW complexes. We introduce various combinatorial tools for analyzing these theories and investigate their connections to toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, which arise as their master and moduli spaces. Invariance of the moduli space is indeed a powerful criterion for identifying theories in the same triality class. We also investigate the reducibility of these theories.

Cluster Algebras and Scattering Diagrams, Part II. Cluster Patterns and Scattering Diagrams
Published in MSJ Mem. 41 (2023) • Search Publication
We review some important results by Gross, Hacking, Keel, and Kontsevich on cluster algebra theory, namely, the column sign-coherence of $C$-matrices and the Laurent positivity, both of which were conjectured by Fomin and Zelevinsky. We digest and reconstruct the proofs of these conjectures by Gross et al. still based on their scattering diagram method, however, without relying on toric geometry. At the same time, we also give a detailed account of the correspondence between the notions of cluster patterns and scattering diagrams. Most of the results in this text are found in or translated from the known results in the literature. However, the approach, the construction of logic and proofs, and the overall presentation are new. Also, as an application of the results and the techniques in the text, we show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between $g$-vectors and cluster variables in cluster patterns with arbitrary coefficients.

An algebraic construction of sum-integral interpolators
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper presents an algebraic construction of Euler-Maclaurin formulas for polytopes. The formulas obtained generalize and unite the previous lattice point formulas of Morelli and Pommersheim-Thomas, and the Euler-Maclaurin formulas of Berline-Vergne While the approach of this paper originates in the theory of toric varieties, and recovers previous results about characteristic classes of toric varieties, the present paper is self-contained and does not rely on results from toric geometry. We aim in particular to exhibit in a combinatorial way ingredients such as such Todd classes and cycle-level intersections in Chow rings, that first entered the theory of polytopes from algebraic geometry.
Multivariate volume, Ehrhart, and $h^*$-polynomials of polytropes
Published in Journal of Symbolic Computation, Volume 114, Pages 209-230, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
The univariate Ehrhart and $h^*$-polynomials of lattice polytopes have been widely studied. We describe methods from toric geometry for computing multivariate versions of volume, Ehrhart and $h^*$-polynomials of lattice polytropes, which are both tropically and classically convex. These algorithms are applied to all polytropes of dimensions 2,3 and 4, yielding a large class of integer polynomials. We give a complete combinatorial description of the coefficients of volume polynomials of 3-dimensional polytropes in terms of regular central subdivisions of the fundamental polytope. Finally, we provide a partial characterization of the analogous coefficients in dimension 4.

Groups, graphs, and hypergraphs: average sizes of kernels of generic matrices with support constraints
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop a theory of average sizes of kernels of generic matrices with support constraints defined in terms of graphs and hypergraphs. We apply this theory to study unipotent groups associated with graphs. In particular, we establish strong uniformity results pertaining to zeta functions enumerating conjugacy classes of these groups. We deduce that the numbers of conjugacy classes of $\mathbf{F}_q$-points of the groups under consideration depend polynomially on $q$. Our approach combines group theory, graph theory, toric geometry, and $p$-adic integration. Our uniformity results are in line with a conjecture of Higman on the numbers of conjugacy classes of unitriangular matrix groups. Our findings are, however, in stark contrast to related results by Belkale and Brosnan on the numbers of generic symmetric matrices of given rank associated with graphs.

Graded Quivers, Generalized Dimer Models and Toric Geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
The open string sector of the topological B-model model on CY $(m+2)$-folds is described by $m$-graded quivers with superpotentials. This correspondence extends to general $m$ the well known connection between CY $(m+2)$-folds and gauge theories on the worldvolume of D$(5-2m)$-branes for $m=0,\ldots, 3$. We introduce $m$-dimers, which fully encode the $m$-graded quivers and their superpotentials, in the case in which the CY $(m+2)$-folds are toric. Generalizing the well known $m=1,2$ cases, $m$-dimers significantly simplify the connection between geometry and $m$-graded quivers. A key result of this paper is the generalization of the concept of perfect matching, which plays a central role in this map, to arbitrary $m$. We also introduce a simplified algorithm for the computation of perfect matchings, which generalizes the Kasteleyn matrix approach to any $m$. We illustrate these new tools with a few infinite families of CY singularities.
