Crystal Melting, Triality and Partition Functions for Toric Calabi-Yau Fourfolds
We extend the study of the recently introduced crystal melting models associated to toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds in several directions. In particular, we investigate in greater detail the structure of these models for general toric CY 4-folds and flavor configurations, using the explicit example of $Q^{1,1,1}$ to illustrate our ideas. To this end, we develop an efficient algorithm for constructing crystals based on periodic quivers. A central goal of this work is to understand the behavior of crystals and their partition functions under triality. We analyze the evolution of crystals along periodic triality cascades and generate detailed data for these systems, including Hasse diagrams, partition functions, and the multiplicities of melting configurations. We introduce the notion of stable variables and show that they lead to the stabilization of the partition functions along cascades. Finally, we define the profile of the crystal partition function and observe that, when expressed in terms of stable variables, it displays interesting behavior. A further motivation for this work is to generate empirical data that may guide the search for a physically motivated generalization of cluster algebras associated with $2d$ (0,2) quiver theories and their triality transformations.

We construct statistical mechanical models of crystal melting describing the flavoured Witten indices of $\mathcal{N}\ge 2$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. Our results can be derived from the Jeffrey-Kirwan (JK) residue formulas, and generalize the previous results for quivers corresponding to toric Calabi-Yau threefolds and fourfolds to a large class of quivers satisfying the no-overlap condition, including those corresponding to some non-toric Calabi-Yau manifolds. We construct new quiver algebras which we call the double quiver Yangians/algebras, as well as their representations in terms of the aforementioned crystals. For theories with four supercharges, we compare the double quiver algebras with the existing quiver Yangians/BPS algebras, which we show can also be constructed from the JK residues. For theories with two supercharges, the double quiver algebras provide an algebraic description of the BPS states, including the information of the fixed points and their relative coefficients in the full partition functions.

We derive explicit closed-form expressions for the generating function $C_N(A)$, which enumerates classical closed random walks on square and triangular lattices with $N$ steps and a signed area $A$, characterized by the number of moves in each hopping direction. This enumeration problem is mapped to the trace of powers of anisotropic Hofstadter-like Hamiltonian and is connected to the cluster coefficients of exclusion particles: exclusion strength parameter $g = 2$ for square lattice walks, and a mixture of $g = 1$ and $g = 2$ for triangular lattice walks. By leveraging the intrinsic link between the Hofstadter model and high energy physics, we propose a conjecture connecting the above signed area enumeration $C_N(A)$ in statistical mechanics to the quantum A-period of associated toric Calabi-Yau threefold in topological string theory: square lattice walks correspond to local $\mathbb{F}_0$ geometry, while triangular lattice walks are associated with local $\mathcal{B}_3$.

We study the counting problem of BPS D-branes wrapping holomorphic cycles of a general toric Calabi-Yau manifold. We evaluate the Jeffrey-Kirwan residues for the flavoured Witten index for the supersymmetric quiver quantum mechanics on the worldvolume of the D-branes, and find that BPS degeneracies are described by a statistical mechanical model of crystal melting. For Calabi-Yau threefolds, we reproduce the crystal melting models long known in the literature. For Calabi-Yau fourfolds, however, we find that the crystal does not contain the full information for the BPS degeneracy and we need to explicitly evaluate non-trivial weights assigned to the crystal configurations. Our discussions treat Calabi-Yau threefolds and fourfolds on equal footing, and include discussions on elliptic and rational generalizations of the BPS states counting, connections to the mathematical definition of generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants, examples of wall crossings, and of trialities in quiver gauge theories.
4d Crystal Melting, Toric Calabi-Yau 4-Folds and Brane Brick Models
We introduce a class of 4-dimensional crystal melting models that count the BPS bound state of branes on toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. The crystalline structure is determined by the brane brick model associated to the Calabi-Yau 4-fold under consideration or, equivalently, its dual periodic quiver. The crystals provide a discretized version of the underlying toric geometries. We introduce various techniques to visualize crystals and their melting configurations, including 3-dimensional slicing and Hasse diagrams. We illustrate the construction with the D0-D8 system on $\mathbb{C}^4$. Finally, we outline how our proposal generalizes to arbitrary toric CY 4-folds and general brane configurations.
Charging solid partitions

Solid partitions are the 4D generalization of the plane partitions in 3D and Young diagrams in 2D, and they can be visualized as stacking of 4D unit-size boxes in the positive corner of a 4D room. Physically, solid partitions arise naturally as 4D molten crystals that count equivariant D-brane BPS states on the simplest toric Calabi-Yau fourfold, $\mathbb{C}^4$, generalizing the 3D statement that plane partitions count equivariant D-brane BPS states on $\mathbb{C}^3$. In the construction of BPS algebras for toric Calabi-Yau threefolds, the so-called charge function on the 3D molten crystal is an important ingredient -- it is the generating function for the eigenvalues of an infinite tower of Cartan elements of the algebra. In this paper, we derive the charge function for solid partitions. Compared to the 3D case, the new feature is the appearance of contributions from certain 4-box and 5-box clusters, which will make the construction of the corresponding BPS algebra much more complicated than in the 3D.

We introduce and initiate the study of a general class of $2d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ quiver gauge theories, defined in terms of certain 2-dimensional CW complexes on oriented 3-manifolds. We refer to this class of theories as BFT$_2$$\mbox{'}$s. They are natural generalizations of Brane Brick Models, which capture the gauge theories on D1-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. The dynamics and triality of the gauge theories translate into simple transformations of the underlying CW complexes. We introduce various combinatorial tools for analyzing these theories and investigate their connections to toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, which arise as their master and moduli spaces. Invariance of the moduli space is indeed a powerful criterion for identifying theories in the same triality class. We also investigate the reducibility of these theories.

The open string sector of the topological B-model on CY $(m+2)$-folds is described by $m$-graded quivers with superpotentials. This correspondence generalizes the connection between CY $(m+2)$-folds and gauge theories on the worldvolume of D$(5-2m)$-branes for $m=0,\ldots,3$ to arbitrary $m$. In this paper we introduce the Calabi-Yau product, a new algorithm that starting from the known quiver theories for a pair of toric CY$_{m+2}$ and CY$_{n+2}$ produces the quiver theory for a related CY$_{m+n+3}$. This method significantly supersedes existing ones, enabling the simple determination of quiver theories for geometries that were previously out of practical reach.

Consider zero-dimensional Donaldson-Thomas invariants of a toric threefold or toric Calabi-Yau fourfold. In the second case, invariants can be defined using a tautological insertion. In both cases, the generating series can be expressed in terms of the MacMahon function. In the first case, this follows from a theorem of Maulik-Nekrasov-Okounkov-Pandharipande. In the second case, this follows from a conjecture of the authors and a (more general $K$-theoretic) conjecture of Nekrasov.
In this paper, we consider formal analogues of these invariants in any dimension $d \not \equiv 2 \ \mathrm{mod} \, 4$. The direct analogues of the above-mentioned conjectures fail in general when $d>4$, showing that dimensions 3 and 4 are special. Surprisingly, after appropriate specialization of the equivariant parameters, the conjectures seem to hold in all dimensions.

We present a statistical mechanical model whose random variables are solid partitions, i.e. Young diagrams built by stacking up four dimensional hypercubes. Equivalently, it can be viewed as the model of random tessellations of ${\bf R}^{3}$ by squashed cubes of four fixed orientations. The model computes the refined index of a system of D0-branes in the presence of $D8$-$\overline{D8}$ system, with a $B$-field strong enough to support the bound states. Mathematically, it is the equivariant K-theoretic version of integration over the Hilbert scheme of points on ${\bf C}^{4}$ and its higher rank analogues, albeit the definition is real, not complex analytic. The model is a mother of all random partition models, including the equivariant Donaldson-Thomas theory and the four dimensional instanton counting. Finally, a version of our model with infinite solid partitions with four fixed plane partition asymptotics is the vertex contribution to the equivariant count of instantons on toric Calabi-Yau fourfolds.
The conjectured partition function of the model is presented. We have checked it up to six instantons (which is one step beyond the checks of the celebrated P.~MacMahon's failed conjectures of the early XX century). A specialization of the formula is our earlier (2004) conjecture on the equivariant K-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas theory, proven by A.~Okounkov in 2015.

We study Hilbert schemes of points on a smooth projective Calabi-Yau 4-fold $X$. We define $\mathrm{DT}_4$ invariants by integrating the Euler class of a tautological vector bundle $L^{[n]}$ against the virtual class. We conjecture a formula for their generating series, which we prove in certain cases when $L$ corresponds to a smooth divisor on $X$. A parallel equivariant conjecture for toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds is proposed. This conjecture is proved for smooth toric divisors and verified for more general toric divisors in many examples.
Combining the equivariant conjecture with a vertex calculation, we find explicit positive rational weights, which can be assigned to solid partitions. The weighted generating function of solid partitions is given by $\exp(M(q)-1)$, where $M(q)$ denotes the MacMahon function.

An infinite class of $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories can be engineered on the worldvolume of D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds. This kind of setup has multiple applications, ranging from the gauge/gravity correspondence to local model building in string phenomenology. Brane tilings fully encode the gauge theories on the D3-branes and have substantially simplified their connection to the probed geometries. The purpose of this paper is to push the boundaries of computation and to produce as comprehensive a database of brane tilings as possible. We develop efficient implementations of brane tiling tools particularly suited for this search. We present the first complete classification of toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds with toric diagrams up to area 8 and the corresponding brane tilings. This classification is of interest to both physicists and mathematicians alike.

The topological vertex is a universal series which can be regarded as an object in combinatorics, representation theory, geometry, or physics. It encodes the combinatorics of 3D partitions, the action of vertex operators on Fock space, the Donaldson-Thomas theory of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds, or the open string partition function of $\mathbb{C}^3$.
We prove several identities in which a sum over terms involving the topological vertex is expressed as a closed formula, often a product of simple terms, closely related to Fourier expansions of Jacobi forms. We use purely combinatorial and representation theoretic methods to prove our formulas, but we discuss applications to the Donaldson-Thomas invariants of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds at the end of the paper.

We provide a brane realization of 2d (0,2) Gadde-Gukov-Putrov triality in terms of brane brick models. These are Type IIA brane configurations that are T-dual to D1-branes over singular toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. Triality translates into a local transformation of brane brick models, whose simplest representative is a cube move. We present explicit examples and construct their triality networks. We also argue that the classical mesonic moduli space of brane brick model theories, which corresponds to the probed Calabi-Yau 4-fold, is invariant under triality. Finally, we discuss triality in terms of phase boundaries, which play a central role in connecting Calabi-Yau 4-folds to brane brick models.
Consistency and Derangements in Brane Tilings

Brane tilings describe Lagrangians (vector multiplets, chiral multiplets, and the superpotential) of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories. These theories, written in terms of a bipartite graph on a torus, correspond to worldvolume theories on $N$ D$3$-branes probing a toric Calabi-Yau threefold singularity. A pair of permutations compactly encapsulates the data necessary to specify a brane tiling. We show that geometric consistency for brane tilings, which ensures that the corresponding quantum field theories are well behaved, imposes constraints on the pair of permutations, restricting certain products constructed from the pair to have no one-cycles. Permutations without one-cycles are known as derangements. We illustrate this formulation of consistency with known brane tilings. Counting formulas for consistent brane tilings with an arbitrary number of chiral bifundamental fields are written down in terms of delta functions over symmetric groups.

We introduce brane brick models, a novel type of Type IIA brane configurations consisting of D4-branes ending on an NS5-brane. Brane brick models are T-dual to D1-branes over singular toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. They fully encode the infinite class of 2d (generically) N=(0,2) gauge theories on the worldvolume of the D1-branes and streamline their connection to the probed geometries. For this purpose, we also introduce new combinatorial procedures for deriving the Calabi-Yau associated to a given gauge theory and vice versa.

We conjecture an evaluation of three-partition cyclic Hodge integrals in terms of loop Schur functions. Our formula implies the orbifold Gromov-Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence for toric Calabi-Yau threefolds with transverse type A singularities. We prove the formula in the case where one of the partitions is empty, and thus establish the orbifold Gromov- Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence for local toric surfaces with transverse type A singularities.

We construct a two-dimensional crystal melting model which reproduces the BPS index of D2-D0 states bound to a non-compact D4-brane on an arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau singularity. The crystalline structure depends on the toric divisor wrapped by the D4-brane. The molten crystals are in one-to-one correspondence with the torus fixed points of the moduli space of the quiver gauge theory on D-branes. The F- and D-term constraints of the gauge theory are regarded as a generalization of the ADHM constraints on instantons. We also show in several examples that our model is consistent with the wall-crossing formula for the BPS index.
