Chow classes of matroids and standard Young tableaux
We study the Chow classes of arbitrary matroids in the Grassmannian. We develop a new combinatorial approach for computing them, by first focusing on snake matroids and then extending our results via valuativity to any matroid. Our main contribution identifies the Poincaré dual of the Chow class of a snake matroid with a specific ribbon Schur function, providing an explicit formula for its coefficients in the Schubert basis as the number of standard Young tableaux of a given shape with a prescribed descent set. This agrees with a formula by Klyachko for the uniform matroid. As consequences, we recover and simplify classical results such as Gessel and Viennot's enumeration of permutations with fixed descent sets, and formulas for the volume of lattice path matroids. Furthermore, we demonstrate the power of our findings by proving that certain Schubert coefficients are positive for all connected paving matroids.
Good Triangulations of Cosmological Polytopes
Cosmological polytopes of graphs are a geometric tool in physics to study wavefunctions for cosmological models whose Feynman diagram is given by the graph. After their recent introduction by Arkani-Hamed, Benincasa and Postnikov the focus of interest shifted towards their mathematical properties, e.g., their face structure and triangulations. Juhnke, Solus and Venturello used toric geometry to show that these polytopes have a so-called good triangulation that is unimodular. Based on these results Bruckamp et al. studied the Ehrhart theory of those polytopes and in particular the h*-polynomials of cosmological polytopes of multitrees and multicycles. In this article we complete this part of the story. We enumerate all maximal simplices in good triangulations of any cosmological polytope. Furthermore, we provide a method to turn such a triangulation into a half-open decomposition from which we deduce that the h*-polynomial of a cosmological polytope is a specialization of the Tutte polynomial of the defining graph. This settles several open questions and conjectures of Juhnke, Solus and Venturello as well as Bruckamp et al.
Tutte polynomials of matroids as universal valuative invariants
We provide a full classification of all families of matroids that are closed under duality and minors, and for which the Tutte polynomial is a universal valuative invariant. There are four inclusion-wise maximal families, two of which are the class of elementary split matroids and the class of graphic Schubert matroids. As a consequence of our framework, we derive new relations among Tutte polynomials of matroids. For example, we show that the Tutte polynomial of every matroid can be expressed uniquely as an integral combination of Tutte polynomials of graphic Schubert matroids.

OSCAR is an innovative new computer algebra system which combines and extends the power of its four cornerstone systems - GAP (group theory), Singular (algebra and algebraic geometry), Polymake (polyhedral geometry), and Antic (number theory). Here, we present parts of the module handeling matroids in OSCAR, which will appear as a chapter of the upcoming OSCAR book. A matroid is a fundamental and actively studied object in combinatorics. Matroids generalize linear dependency in vector spaces as well as many aspects of graph theory. Moreover, matroids form a cornerstone of tropical geometry and a deep link between algebraic geometry and combinatorics. Our focus lies in particular on computing the realization space and the Chow ring of a matroid.

This paper initiates the explicit study of face numbers of matroid polytopes and their computation. We prove that, for the large class of split matroid polytopes, their face numbers depend solely on the number of cyclic flats of each rank and size, together with information on the modular pairs of cyclic flats. We provide a formula which allows us to calculate $f$-vectors without the need of taking convex hulls or computing face lattices. We discuss the particular cases of sparse paving matroids and rank two matroids, which are of independent interest due to their appearances in other combinatorial and geometric settings.

We study an operation in matroid theory that allows one to transition a given matroid into another with more bases via relaxing a \emph{stressed subset}. This framework provides a new combinatorial characterization of the class of split matroids. Moreover, it permits to describe an explicit matroid subdivision of a hypersimplex, which in turn can be used to write down concrete formulas for the evaluations of any valuative invariant on these matroids. This shows that evaluations on split matroids depend solely on the behavior of the invariant on tractable subclass of Schubert matroids. We address systematically the consequences of our approach for several invariants. They include the volume and Ehrhart polynomial of base polytopes, the Tutte polynomial, Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials, the Whitney numbers of the first and second kind, spectrum polynomials and a generalization of these by Denham, chain polynomials and Speyer's $g$-polynomials, as well as Chow rings of matroids and their Hilbert--Poincaré series. The flexibility of this setting allows us to give a unified explanation for several recent results regarding the listed invariants; furthermore, we emphasize it as a powerful computational tool to produce explicit data and concrete examples.

In 1999 Merino and Welsh conjectured that evaluations of the Tutte polynomial of a graph satisfy an inequality. In this short article we show that the conjecture generalized to matroids holds for the large class of all split matroids by exploiting the structure of their lattice of cyclic flats. This class of matroids strictly contains all paving and copaving matroids.

Over a decade ago De Loera, Haws and Köppe conjectured that Ehrhart polynomials of matroid polytopes have only positive coefficients and that the coefficients of the corresponding $h^*$-polynomials form a unimodal sequence. The first of these intensively studied conjectures has recently been disproved by the first author who gave counterexamples in all ranks greater or equal to three. In this article we complete the picture by showing that Ehrhart polynomials of matroids of lower rank have indeed only positive coefficients. Moreover, we show that they are coefficient-wise bounded by the Ehrhart polynomials of minimal and uniform matroids. We furthermore address the second conjecture by proving that $h^*$-polynomials of matroid polytopes of sparse paving matroids of rank two are real-rooted and therefore have log-concave and unimodal coefficients. In particular, this shows that the $h^*$-polynomial of the second hypersimplex is real-rooted thereby strengthening a result of De Loera, Haws and Köppe.

We specify what is meant for a polytope to be reconstructible from its graph or dual graph. And we introduce the problem of class reconstructibility, i.e., the face lattice of the polytope can be determined from the (dual) graph within a given class. We provide examples of cubical polytopes that are not reconstructible from their dual graphs. Furthermore, we show that matroid (base) polytopes are not reconstructible from their graphs and not class reconstructible from their dual graphs; our counterexamples include hypersimplices. Additionally, we prove that matroid polytopes are class reconstructible from their graphs, and we present a $O(n^3)$ algorithm that computes the vertices of a matroid polytope from its $n$-vertex graph. Moreover, our proof includes a characterisation of all matroids with isomorphic basis exchange graphs.

In this article, we present a massively parallel framework for computing tropicalizations of algebraic varieties which can make use of finite symmetries. We compute the tropical Grassmannian TGr$_0(3,8)$, and show that it refines the $15$-dimensional skeleton of the Dressian Dr$(3,8)$ with the exception of $23$ special cones for which we construct explicit obstructions to the realizability of their tropical linear spaces. Moreover, we propose algorithms for identifying maximal-dimensional tropical cones which belong to the positive tropicalization. These algorithms exploit symmetries of the tropical variety even though the positive tropicalization need not be symmetric. We compute the maximal-dimensional cones of the positive Grassmannian TGr$^+(3,8)$ and compare them to the cluster complex of the classical Grassmannian Gr$(3,8)$.

We study the moduli space of $d$-dimensional linear subspaces contained in a fixed $(d+1)$-dimensional linear variety $X$, and its tropicalization. We prove that these moduli spaces are linear subspaces themselves, and thus their tropicalization is completely determined by their associated (valuated) matroids. We show that these matroids can be interpreted as the matroid of lines of the hyperplane arrangement corresponding to $X$, and generically are equal to a Dilworth truncation of the free matroid. In this way, we can describe combinatorially tropicalized Fano schemes and tropicalizations of moduli spaces of stable maps of degree $1$ to a plane.

We study the fan structure of Dressians $\Dr(d,n)$ and local Dressians $\Dr(\cM)$ for a given matroid $\cM$. In particular we show that the fan structure on $\Dr(\cM)$ given by the three term Plücker relations coincides with the structure as a subfan of the secondary fan of the matroid polytope $P(\cM)$. As a corollary, we have that a matroid subdivision is determined by its 3-dimensional skeleton. We also prove that the Dressian of the sum of two matroids is isomorphic to the product of the Dressians of the matroids. Finally we focus on indecomposable matroids. We show that binary matroids are indecomposable, and we provide a non-binary indecomposable matroid as a counterexample for the converse.

Let $G$ be a finite connected graph, and let $T$ be a spanning tree of $G$ chosen uniformly at random. The work of Kirchhoff on electrical networks can be used to show that the events $e_1 \in T$ and $e_2 \in T$ are negatively correlated for any distinct edges $e_1$ and $e_2$. What can be said for such events when the underlying matroid is not necessarily graphic? We use Hodge theory for matroids to bound the correlation between the events $e \in B$, where $B$ is a randomly chosen basis of a matroid. As an application, we prove Mason's conjecture that the number of $k$-element independent sets of a matroid forms an ultra-log-concave sequence in $k$.
The correlation constant of a field
We study the correlation of edges, vectors or elements to be in a randomly chosen spanning tree or a basis, respectively. Here we follow the guideline of Huh and Wang and introduce as a measure an invariant that is called the correlation constant of a graph, vector configuration, matroid or field. It follows from one of their results that these correlation constants are numbers between $0$ and $2$. Here, we show that the correlation constant of every field is at least $\frac{8}{7}$. In our proof we explicitly construct vector configurations and matroids with positively correlated elements.

In this paper we present an explicit combinatorial description of a special class of facets of the secondary polytopes of hypersimplices. These facets correspond to polytopal subdivisions called multi-splits. We show a relation between the cells in a multi-split of the hypersimplex and nested matroids. Moreover, we get a description of all multi-splits of a product of simplices. Additionally, we present a computational result to derive explicit lower bounds on the number of facets of secondary polytopes of hypersimplices.

A class of matroids is introduced which is very large as it strictly contains all paving matroids as special cases. As their key feature these split matroids can be studied via techniques from polyhedral geometry. It turns out that the structural properties of the split matroids can be exploited to obtain new results in tropical geometry, especially on the rays of the tropical Grassmannians.
