Nonnegativity of the $g$-polynomial of split matroids
We prove that the $g$-polynomial of every split matroid has nonnegative coefficients, establishing Speyer's conjecture for a class closed under taking minors and containing all paving and copaving matroids. Our proof uses a deletion--contraction identity obtained by constructing an auxiliary split matroid. We first show that every simple, cosimple, connected split matroid $M$ has an element $e$ for which both the deletion $M\setminus e$ and the contraction $M/e$ are connected. More generally, let $M$ be any connected split matroid of rank $k$ on a ground set $E$ with $|E|\ge4$. Suppose that $e\in E$ is such that both $M\setminus e$ and $M/e$ are connected. For every $v\in E\setminus\{e\}$, we construct a connected elementary split matroid $N_{e,v}$ of rank $k-1$ on $E\setminus\{e,v\}$ satisfying \[
g_M(t)=g_{M\setminus e}(t)+g_{M/e}(t)+t\,g_{N_{e,v}}(t). \] Using a fixed total order on $E$, we prescribe the proper cyclic flats of $N_{e,v}$ and their ranks. The identity follows from the covaluative formula of Ferroni and Schröter together with recurrences for its correction polynomials, derived from Ferroni's enumeration of admissible Delannoy paths for Schubert matroids. Since all three matroids on the right have fewer elements, the identity supplies the induction step in the proof of nonnegativity.
Chromatic word-quasisymmetric functions of matroids
Billera, Jia, and Reiner (2009) introduced the quasisymmetric functions of matroids and showed that this defines a Hopf algebra homomorphism which is a valuative invariant, i.e., isomorphic matroids have the same quasisymmetric function and polytopal subdivisions of matroid base polytopes define relations among the corresponding quasisymmetric functions. In this project we study an analogue in non-commuting variables, the word-quasisymmetric functions. To every matroid $M$ we associate a word-quasisymmetric function $ψ(M)$ and call this the chromatic word-quasisymmetric functions of a matroid.
Matroids and word-quasisymmetric functions form Hopf algebras, and our map $ψ$ between them is a homomorphism. We want to study the kernel, equivalently the image, of the map $ψ$ from matroids to word-quasisymmetric functions, that is, we would like to understand which matroids are indistinguishable by the chromatic word-quasisymmetric functions. The map $ψ$ is not an invariant, but we can show that it is valuative. Using Schubert matroids and nested matroids, special classes of matroids, we prove a lower bound of $2^d-d$ for the rank of the map $ψ$ from matroids to the chromatic word-quasisymmetric functions in degree $d$ and conjecture the upper bound of $d!$ is tight.
Combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the order polynomial of fence posets
Given a fence poset P , we define a new statistic on permutations, denoted by blP, that provides a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the order polynomial of P , answering a question of Ferroni, Morales, and Panova (2025). Using the fact that the base polytope of a lattice path matroid can be decomposed into order polytopes of fence posets, we also obtain a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of the base polytope of Schubert matroids, answering a question of Stanley (1999). As an application of this statistic, we establish the first nontrivial lower bound for the linear coefficient of the Ehrhart polynomial of an order polytope. Finally, we conjecture generalizations of this statistic to skew-shape posets and circular fence posets.
Ehrhart positivity for lattice path matroids
We prove that all lattice path matroids are Ehrhart positive. This unifies and generalizes numerous results on the Ehrhart positivity of matroids developed over the last two decades. We rely on our previous work on the positivity of order polynomials of fences. Our main result supports the conjecture by Ferroni, Jochemko, and Schröter (2022) on the Ehrhart positivity of positroids. Furthermore, our main result implies that all Schubert matroids are Ehrhart positive, which thus settles a conjecture by Fan and Li (2024), and supports a conjecture by Monical, Tokcan, and Yong (2019) on the Ehrhart positivity of Schubitopes.
Lattice-free Schubitopes
In this paper, we provide a simple criterion for the Schubitope $\mathcal{S}_{D}$ associated to a diagram $D$ to be lattice-free. We further show that $\mathcal{S}_{D}$ is lattice-free if and only if its Ehrhart polynomial is equal to the product of Ehrhart polynomials of the Schubert matroid polytopes corresponding to each column of $D$. As applications, we obtain that the Newton polytopes of the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w(x)$ and the Grothendieck polynomial $\mathfrak{G}_w(x)$ are lattice-free if and only if $w$ avoids the patterns 1423, 1432, 13254, and confirm several conjectures by Mészáros, Setiabrata, and St.Dizier on the support of Grothendieck polynomials for this class of permutations.
The polytope of all matroids

It is possible to write the indicator function of any matroid polytope as an integer combination of indicator functions of Schubert matroid polytopes. In this way, every matroid on $n$ elements of rank $r$ can be thought of as a lattice point in the space having a coordinate for each Schubert matroid on $n$ elements of rank $r$.
We study the convex hull of all these lattice points, with particular focus on the vertices, which come from the matroids we call extremal matroids. We show that several famous classes of matroids arise as faces of the polytopes, and in many cases we determine the dimension of this face explicitly. As an application, we show that there exist valuative invariants that attain non-negative values at all representable matroids, but fail to be non-negative in general.
Matchings in matroids over abelian groups, II

The concept of matchings originated in group theory to address a linear algebra problem related to canonical forms for symmetric tensors. In an abelian group $(G,+)$, a matching is a bijection $f: A \to B$ between two finite subsets $A$ and $B$ of $G$ such that $a + f(a) \notin A$ for all $a \in A$. A group $G$ has the matching property if, for every two finite subsets $A, B \subset G$ of the same size with $0 \notin B$, there exists a matching from $A$ to $B$. In prior work [5], matroid analogues of results concerning matchings in groups were introduced and established. This paper serves as a sequel, extending that line of inquiry by investigating sparse paving, panhandle, and Schubert matroids through the lens of matchability. While some proofs draw upon earlier findings on the matchability of sparse paving matroids, the paper is designed to be self-contained and accessible without reference to the preceding sequel. Our approach combines tools from both matroid theory and additive number theory.

We provide explicit combinatorial formulas for the Chow polynomial and for the augmented Chow polynomial of uniform matroids, thereby proving a conjecture by Ferroni. These formulas refine existing formulas by Hampe and by Eur, Huh, and Larson, offering a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients based on Schubert matroids. As a byproduct, we count Schubert matroids by rank, number of loops, and cogirth.

We provide a full classification of all families of matroids that are closed under duality and minors, and for which the Tutte polynomial is a universal valuative invariant. There are four inclusion-wise maximal families, two of which are the class of elementary split matroids and the class of graphic Schubert matroids. As a consequence of our framework, we derive new relations among Tutte polynomials of matroids. For example, we show that the Tutte polynomial of every matroid can be expressed uniquely as an integral combination of Tutte polynomials of graphic Schubert matroids.
Derived Categories of Permutahedral and Stellahedral Varieties
We utilize the coherent-constructible correspondence to construct full strongly exceptional collections of nef line bundles in the derived category of a toric variety through the combinatorics of constructible sheaves built from polytopes. To show that sequences are full, we build exact complexes of line bundles that categorify the relations in the McMullen polytope algebra. We compute the homomorphisms between certain constructible sheaves on polytopes and use this to reduce the question of exceptionality to showing that certain set differences of polytopes are contractible.
As an application of our method, we construct full strongly exceptional collections of nef line bundles for the toric varieties associated to the permutahedron, stellahedron, and the type $B_n$ Coxeter permutahedron. The line bundles in our collections are indexed by base polytopes of loopless Schubert matroids, independence polytopes of all Schubert matroids, and feasible polytopes of loopless Schubert delta matroids, respectively.
Our collections satisfy a number of nice properties: First, the quiver with relations that encodes the endomorphism algebra of the tilting sheaf can be described matroid-theoretically as a slight extension of the notion of weak maps and inclusion of matroids; Second, our collections are invariant under the natural symmetries of the corresponding fans; Finally, the induced semi-orthogonal decomposition of the derived categories refines the cuspidal semi-orthogonal decomposition as studied by Castravet and Tevelev. This gives a full strongly exceptional collection of nef line bundles for the cuspidal parts of the derived categories of our varieties indexed by loopless and coloopless Schubert matroids and Schubert delta matroids.

We provide a combinatorial way of computing Speyer's $g$-polynomial on arbitrary Schubert matroids via the enumeration of certain Delannoy paths. We define a new statistic of a basis in a matroid, and express the $g$-polynomial of a Schubert matroid in terms of it and internal and external activities. Some surprising positivity properties of the $g$-polynomial of Schubert matroids are deduced from our expression. Finally, we combine our formulas with a fundamental result of Derksen and Fink to provide an algorithm for computing the $g$-polynomial of an arbitrary matroid.

We study an operation in matroid theory that allows one to transition a given matroid into another with more bases via relaxing a \emph{stressed subset}. This framework provides a new combinatorial characterization of the class of split matroids. Moreover, it permits to describe an explicit matroid subdivision of a hypersimplex, which in turn can be used to write down concrete formulas for the evaluations of any valuative invariant on these matroids. This shows that evaluations on split matroids depend solely on the behavior of the invariant on tractable subclass of Schubert matroids. We address systematically the consequences of our approach for several invariants. They include the volume and Ehrhart polynomial of base polytopes, the Tutte polynomial, Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials, the Whitney numbers of the first and second kind, spectrum polynomials and a generalization of these by Denham, chain polynomials and Speyer's $g$-polynomials, as well as Chow rings of matroids and their Hilbert--Poincaré series. The flexibility of this setting allows us to give a unified explanation for several recent results regarding the listed invariants; furthermore, we emphasize it as a powerful computational tool to produce explicit data and concrete examples.

In this paper, we give a formula for the number of lattice points in the dilations of Schubert matroid polytopes. As applications, we obtain the Ehrhart polynomials of uniform and minimal matroids as special cases, and give a recursive formula for the Ehrhart polynomials of $(a,b)$-Catalan matroids. Ferroni showed that uniform and minimal matroids are Ehrhart positive. We show that all sparse paving Schubert matroids are Ehrhart positive and their Ehrhart polynomials are coefficient-wisely bounded by those of minimal and uniform matroids. This confirms a conjecture of Ferroni for the case of sparse paving Schubert matroids. Furthermore, we introduce notched rectangle matroids, which include minimal matroids, sparse paving Schubert matroids and panhandle matroids. We show that three subfamilies of notched rectangle matroids are Ehrhart positive, and conjecture that all notched rectangle matroids are Ehrhart positive.

Coxeter matroids generalize matroids just as flag varieties of Lie groups generalize Grassmannians. Valuations of Coxeter matroids are functions that behave well with respect to subdivisions of a Coxeter matroid into smaller ones. We compute the universal valuative invariant of Coxeter matroids. A key ingredient is the family of Coxeter Schubert matroids, which correspond to the Bruhat cells of flag varieties. In the process, we compute the universal valuation of generalized Coxeter permutohedra, a larger family of polyhedra that model Coxeter analogues of combinatorial objects such as matroids, clusters, and posets.
Simplicial generation of Chow rings of matroids
We introduce a presentation of the Chow ring of a matroid by a new set of generators, called "simplicial generators." These generators are analogous to nef divisors on projective toric varieties, and admit a combinatorial interpretation via the theory of matroid quotients. Using this combinatorial interpretation, we (i) produce a bijection between a monomial basis of the Chow ring and a relative generalization of Schubert matroids, (ii) recover the Poincaré duality property, (iii) give a formula for the volume polynomial, which we show is log-concave in the positive orthant, and (iv) recover the validity of Hodge-Riemann relations in degree 1, which is the part of the Hodge theory of matroids that currently accounts for all combinatorial applications of [AHK18]. Our work avoids the use of "flips," the key technical tool employed in [AHK18].

Postnikov gave a combinatorial description of the cells in a totally-nonnegative Grassmannian. These cells correspond to a special class of matroids called positroid. We prove his conjecture that a positroid is exactly an intersection of permuted Schubert matroids. This leads to a nice combinatorial description of positroids that is easily computable.
