The Poincaré Series of Coxeter Folding Subgroups
Folding subgroups give a way to realize non-simply-laced Coxeter groups as subgroups of simply-laced Coxeter groups. In this paper, we study how folding subgroups of finite and affine type are distributed length-wise by calculating the length generating function of the subgroup with respect the length of the ambient group. These generating functions have surprisingly nice formulas in terms of $q$-integers and give rise to interesting combinatorial identities on polynomials involving length statistics of both the ambient group and folding subgroup.
On Krull's Dimension Theorem for Certain Graded Rings and Its Applications
This paper explores the dimension theory of non-Noetherian graded rings by introducing the class of Hilbert-Serre rings. We generalize Krull's dimension theorem and Smoke's dimension theorem by establishing the fundamental inequalities $\dim(R) \le \operatorname{GKdim}_k(R) \le d(R)$ for any Hilbert-Serre ring $R$, where $d(R)$ is the pole order of its Poincaré series at $t=1$. Furthermore, we apply these results to initial algebras, proving that all these dimensions, including the transcendence degree, coincide for monomial algebras. Finally, we provide explicit examples demonstrating that these inequalities can be strict in general, even for integral domains.
On generating functions and automata associated to reflections in Coxeter systems
In this article, we study two combinatorial problems concerning the set of reflections of a Coxeter system. The first problem asks whether the language of palindromic reduced words for reflections is regular, and the second is about finding formulas for the Poincaré series of reflections, namely the generating function of reflection lengths. These two problems were inspired by a conjecture of Stembridge stating that the Poincaré series of reflections is rational and by the solution provided by de Man.
To address the first problem, we introduce reflection-prefixes, arising naturally from palindromic reduced words. We study their connections with the root poset, dominance order on roots, and dihedral reflection subgroups. Using $m$-canonical automata associated with $m$-Shi arrangements, we prove that the language of reduced words for reflection-prefixes is regular. For the second problem, we focus on affine Coxeter groups. In this case, we derive a simple formula for the Poincaré series using symmetries of the Hasse diagram of the root poset.
Existence of Kähler algebras with Chow polynomials as Hilbert series
In this article, we study Chow polynomials of weakly ranked posets and prove the existence of Gorenstein algebras with the Kähler package such that their Hilbert--Poincaré series agrees with the Chow polynomial. Our statement provides evidence in support of a conjecture by Ferroni, Matherne and the second author about the existence of an algebra for every weakly ranked poset that generalizes the Feichtner--Yuzvinsky Chow ring for matroids. This allows us to prove strong inequalities for the coefficients of Chow polynomials; we prove log-concavity for all posets of weak rank at most six and provide counterexamples to log-concavity for any higher rank. For ranked posets we recover an even stronger condition, showing that the differences between consecutive coefficients constitute a pure O-sequence.
Chow polynomials of rank-uniform labeled posets
We introduce and develop the theory of UMEL-shellable posets. These are posets equipped with an edge-lexicographical labeling satisfying certain uniformity and monotonicity properties. This framework encompasses classical families of combinatorial geometries, including uniform matroids, projective and affine geometries, braid matroids of type A and B, and all Dowling geometries. It also comprises all rank-uniform supersolvable lattices, and therefore also all rank-uniform distributive lattices. Our main result establishes real-rootedness phenomena for the Chow polynomials, the augmented Chow polynomials, and the chain polynomials associated with those posets, thus making simultaneous progress towards conjectures by Ferroni--Schröter, Huh--Stevens, and Athanasiadis--Kalampogia-Evangelinou. In the special case of lattices of flats of matroids, the (augmented) Chow polynomials coincide with the Hilbert--Poincaré series of the Chow ring associated to the smooth and generally noncompact toric varieties of the (augmented) Bergman fan of the matroid, whereas the chain polynomial encodes the Hilbert--Poincaré series of the Stanley--Reisner ring of the Bergman complex of the matroid. Therefore, these real-rootedness results are tightly linked to the study of these algebro-geometric structures in matroid theory.
Topological Representations of Free Numerical Semigroups via Iterated Torus Knots
In this paper we will associate a family $\{K_1,\dots,K_l\}\subset \mathbb{S}^3$ of iterated torus knots to a given free numerical semigroup. We will describe the fundamental group of the knot complement of each knot of the family. Finally, we will show that all knots in the family have same Alexander polynomial and it coincides (up to a factor) with the Poincaré series of the free numerical semigroup. As a consequence, we will provide families of iterated torus knots with the same Alexander polynomial of an irreducible plane curve singularity but which are non-isotopic to its associated knot.
Chow functions for partially ordered sets
Three decades ago, Stanley and Brenti initiated the study of the Kazhdan--Lusztig--Stanley (KLS) functions, putting on common ground several polynomials appearing in algebraic combinatorics, discrete geometry, and representation theory. In the present paper we develop a theory that parallels the KLS theory. To each kernel in a given poset, we associate a polynomial function that we call the \emph{Chow function}. The Chow function often exhibits remarkable properties, and sometimes encodes the graded dimensions of a cohomology or Chow ring. The framework of Chow functions provides natural polynomial analogs of graded module decompositions that appear in algebraic geometry, but that work for arbitrary posets, even when no graded module decomposition is known to exist. In this general framework, we prove a number of unimodality and positivity results without relying on versions of the Hard Lefschetz theorem. Our framework shows that there is an unexpected relation between positivity and real-rootedness conjectures about chains on face lattices of polytopes by Brenti and Welker, Hilbert--Poincaré series of matroid Chow rings by Ferroni and Schröter, and flag enumerations on Bruhat intervals of Coxeter groups by Billera and Brenti.
Poincaré series of semigroups
Many invariants of finitely generated positive cancelative commutative semigroups can be studied from their Poincaré series. We offer and present several closed formulas for them. Moreover, those formulas have elementary proofs and are presented in two distinct forms: one characterized in terms of simplicial complexes and the other by a purely set theoretical approach.
Khovanov-Rozansky homology of Coxeter knots and Schröder polynomials for paths under any line
We introduce a family of generalized Schröder polynomials $S_τ(q,t,a)$, indexed by triangular partitions $τ$ and prove that $S_τ(q,t,a)$ agrees with the Poincaré series of the triply graded Khovanov-Rozansky homology of the Coxeter knot $K_τ$ associated to $τ$. For all integers $m,n,d\geq 1$ with $m,n$ relatively prime, the $(d,mnd+1)$-cable of the torus knot $T(m,n)$ appears as a special case. It is known that these knots are algebraic, and as a result we obtain a proof of the $q=1$ specialization of the Oblomkov-Rasmussen-Shende conjecture for these knots. Finally, we show that our Schröder polynomial computes the hook components in the Schur expansion of the symmetric function appearing in the shuffle theorem under any line, thus proving a triangular version of the $(q,t)$-Schröder theorem.

We study an operation in matroid theory that allows one to transition a given matroid into another with more bases via relaxing a \emph{stressed subset}. This framework provides a new combinatorial characterization of the class of split matroids. Moreover, it permits to describe an explicit matroid subdivision of a hypersimplex, which in turn can be used to write down concrete formulas for the evaluations of any valuative invariant on these matroids. This shows that evaluations on split matroids depend solely on the behavior of the invariant on tractable subclass of Schubert matroids. We address systematically the consequences of our approach for several invariants. They include the volume and Ehrhart polynomial of base polytopes, the Tutte polynomial, Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials, the Whitney numbers of the first and second kind, spectrum polynomials and a generalization of these by Denham, chain polynomials and Speyer's $g$-polynomials, as well as Chow rings of matroids and their Hilbert--Poincaré series. The flexibility of this setting allows us to give a unified explanation for several recent results regarding the listed invariants; furthermore, we emphasize it as a powerful computational tool to produce explicit data and concrete examples.

For any flag simplicial complex $K$, we describe the multigraded Poincare series, the minimal number of relations and the degrees of these relations in the Pontryagin algebra of the corresponding moment-angle complex $Z_K$. We compute the LS-category of $Z_K$ for flag complexes and give a lower bound in the general case. The key observation is that the Milnor-Moore spectral sequence collapses at the second sheet for flag $K$. We also show that the results of Panov and Ray about the Pontryagin algebras of Davis-Januszkiewicz spaces are valid for arbitrary coefficient rings, and introduce the $(\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}^m)$-grading on the Pontryagin algebras which is similar to the multigrading on the cohomology of $Z_K$.

The equation $x^m = 0$ defines a fat point on a line. The algebra of regular functions on the arc space of this scheme is the quotient of $k[x, x', x^{(2)}, \ldots]$ by all differential consequences of $x^m = 0$. This infinite-dimensional algebra admits a natural filtration by finite dimensional algebras corresponding to the truncations of arcs. We show that the generating series for their dimensions equals $\frac{m}{1 - mt}$. We also determine the lexicographic initial ideal of the defining ideal of the arc space. These results are motivated by nonreduced version of the geometric motivic Poincaré series, multiplicities in differential algebra, and connections between arc spaces and the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We also prove a recent conjecture put forth by Afsharijoo in the latter context.

We extend the definition of coarse flag Hilbert--Poincaré series to matroids; these series arise in the context of local Igusa zeta functions associated to hyperplane arrangements. We study these series in the case of oriented matroids by applying geometric and combinatorial tools related to their topes. In this case, we prove that the numerators of these series are coefficient-wise bounded below by the Eulerian polynomial and equality holds if and only if all topes are simplicial. Moreover this yields a sufficient criterion for non-orientability of matroids of arbitrary rank.

Chow rings of matroids were instrumental in the resolution of the Heron-Rota-Welsh Conjecture by Adiprasito, Huh, and Katz and in the resolution of the Top-Heavy Conjecture by Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot, and Wang. The Chow ring of a matroid is a commutative, graded, Artinian, Gorenstein algebra with linear and quadratic relations defined by the matroid. Dotsenko conjectured that the Chow ring of any matroid is Koszul. The purpose of this paper is to prove Dotsenko's conjecture. We also show that the augmented Chow ring of a matroid is Koszul. As a corollary, we show that the Chow rings and augmented Chow rings of matroids have rational Poincaré series.
Poincaré Series of Divisors on Graphs and Chains of Loops
We study Poincaré series associated to a finite collection of divisors on i. a finite graph and ii. a certain family of metric graphs called chain of loops. Our main results are proofs of rationality of the Poincaré series and algorithms for computing it in both these cases. The main tools used in the proof of rationality are the following. For graphs, we study a certain homomorphism from a free Abelian group of finite rank to the direct sum of the Jacobian of the graph and the integers. For chains of loops, our main tool is an analogue of Lang's conjecture for Brill-Noether loci on a chain of loops and adapts the proof of rationality of the Poincaré series of divisors on an algebraic curve (over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero). Our algorithms are based on a closer study of the objects involved in the proof of rationality, for instance, computing the fibres of certain homomorphisms and lattice point enumeration in rational polyhedra.

In this paper we are interested in two kinds of (stacky) character varieties associated to a compact non-orientable surface. (A) We consider the quotient stack of the space of representations of the fundamental group of this surface to GL(n). (B) We choose a set of k-punctures on the surface and a generic k-tuple of semisimple conjugacy classes of GL(n), and we consider the stack of anti-invariant local systems on the orientation cover of the surface with local monodromies around the punctures given by the prescribed conjugacy classes. We compute the number of points of these spaces over finite fields from which we get a formula for their E-series (a certain specialization of the mixed Poincaré series). In case (B), we discuss the mixed Poincaré series when the surface is the real projective plane and k=1.
Antichain Simplices
To each lattice simplex $Δ$ we associate a poset encoding the additive structure of lattice points in the fundamental parallelepiped for $Δ$. When this poset is an antichain, we say $Δ$ is antichain. To each partition $λ$ of $n$, we associate a lattice simplex $Δ_λ$ having one unimodular facet, and we investigate their associated posets. We give a number-theoretic characterization of the relations in these posets, as well as a simplified characterization in the case where each part of $λ$ is relatively prime to $n-1$. We use these characterizations to experimentally study $Δ_λ$ for all partitions of $n$ with $n\leq 73$. We also investigate the structure of these posets when $λ$ has only one or two distinct parts. Finally, we explain how this work relates to Poincaré series for the semigroup algebra associated to $Δ$, and we prove that this series is rational when $Δ$ is antichain.
Rationality of Poincaré Series for a Family of Lattice Simplices
We investigate multi-graded Gorenstein semigroup algebras associated with an infinite family of reflexive lattice simplices. For each of these algebras, we prove that their multigraded Poincaré series is rational. Our method of proof is to produce for each algebra an explicit minimal free resolution of the ground field, in which the resolution reflects the recursive structure encoded in the denominator of the finely-graded Poincaré series. Using this resolution, we show that these algebras are not Koszul, and therefore rationality is non-trivial. Our results demonstrate how interactions between multivariate and univariate rational generating functions can create subtle complications when attempting to use rational Poincaré series to inform the construction of minimal resolutions.

Suppose that for each n >= 0 we have a representation $M_n$ of the symmetric group S_n. Such sequences arise in a wide variety of contexts, and often exhibit uniformity in some way. We prove a number of general results along these lines in this paper: our prototypical theorem states that if $M_n$ can be given a suitable module structure over a twisted commutative algebra then the sequence $M_n$ follows a predictable pattern. We phrase these results precisely in the language of Hilbert series (or Poincaré series, or formal characters) of modules over tca's.

We construct a non-normal affine monoid together with its modules associated with a negative definite plumbed $3$-manifold $M$. In terms of their structure, we describe the $H_1(M,\mathbb{Z})$-equivariant parts of the topological Poincaré series. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the Seiberg--Witten invariants of $M$ and for polynomial generalizations defined in a previous paper of the authors.
