Induced Lorentzian and volume polynomials
Suppose one has a party of $m$ people, whose expertise collectively covers $n$ topics. Given a subset $T$ of the topics, one wishes to form a panel of $|T|$ people from the party such that $T$ can be covered by assigning a distinct topic to each panel member with the expertise. We show that the numbers of such panels, as $T$ varies, form a Lorentzian polynomial. We achieve this by showing that a certain linear operator on polynomials, which we call the ``inducing operator'' for its connection to induced (poly)matroids, preserves Lorentzian polynomials and realizable volume polynomials.
Tree metrics and log-concavity for matroids
We show that a set function $ν$ satisfies the gross substitutes property if and only if its homogeneous generating polynomial $Z_{q,ν}$ is a Lorentzian polynomial for all positive $q \le 1$, answering a question of Eur-Huh. We achieve this by giving a rank 1 upper bound for the distance matrix of an ultrametric tree, refining a classical result of Graham-Pollak. This characterization enables us to resolve two open problems that strengthen Mason's log-concavity conjectures for the number of independent sets of a matroid: one posed by Giansiracusa-Rincón-Schleis-Ulirsch for valuated matroids, and two posed by Dowling in 1980 and Zhao in 1985 for ordinary matroids.
Vanishing theorems for combinatorial geometries
We establish strong vanishing theorems for line bundles on wonderful varieties of hyperplane arrangements, and we show that the resulting positivity properties of Euler characteristics extend to all matroids. We achieve this by showing that every degeneration of a wonderful variety within the permutohedral toric variety is reduced and Cohen--Macaulay. The same holds for a larger class of subschemes in products of projective lines that we call "kindred," which are characterized by matroidal Hilbert polynomials. Our results give a new proof of the 20-year-old f-vector conjecture of Speyer and resolve the conjecture of Tohaneanu that higher order Orlik--Terao algebras are Cohen--Macaulay.
Building sets, Chow rings, and their Hilbert series
We establish formulas for the Hilbert series of the Feichtner--Yuzvinsky Chow ring of a polymatroid using arbitrary building sets. For braid matroids and minimal building sets, our results produce new formulas for the Poincaré polynomial of the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+1}$ of pointed stable rational curves, and recover several previous results by Keel, Getzler, Manin, and Aluffi--Marcolli--Nascimento. We also use our methods to produce examples of matroids and building sets for which the corresponding Chow ring has Hilbert series with non-log-concave coefficients. This contrasts with the real-rootedness and log-concavity conjectures of Ferroni--Schröter for matroids with maximal building sets, and of Aluffi--Chen--Marcolli for braid matroids with minimal building sets.
Canonical forms of oriented matroids
Positive geometries are semialgebraic sets equipped with a canonical differential form whose residues mirror the boundary structure of the geometry. Every full-dimensional projective polytope is a positive geometry. Motivated by the canonical forms of polytopes, we construct a canonical form for any tope of an oriented matroid, inside the Orlik--Solomon algebra of the underlying matroid. Using these canonical forms, we construct bases for the Orlik--Solomon algebra of a matroid, and for the Aomoto cohomology. These bases of canonical forms are a foundational input in the theory of matroid amplitudes introduced by the second author.
On two notions of total positivity for generalized partial flag varieties of classical Lie types
For Grassmannians, Lusztig's notion of total positivity coincides with positivity of the Plucker coordinates. This coincidence underpins the rich interaction between matroid theory, tropical geometry, and the theory of total positivity. Bloch and Karp furthermore characterized the (type A) partial flag varieties for which the two notions of positivity similarly coincide. We characterize the symplectic (type C) and odd-orthogonal (type B) partial flag varieties for which Lusztig's total positivity coincides with Plucker positivity.
Wondertopes
Positive geometries were introduced by Arkani-Hamed--Bai--Lam as a method of computing scattering amplitudes in theoretical physics. We show that a positive geometry from a polytope admits a log resolution of singularities to another positive geometry. Our result states that the regions in a wonderful compactification of a hyperplane arrangement complement, which we call wondertopes, are positive geometries. A familiar wondertope is the curvy associahedron, which tiles the moduli space of pointed stable rational curves. Thus our work generalizes the known positive geometry structure on this moduli space.
K-theoretic positivity for matroids
Hilbert polynomials have positivity properties under favorable conditions. We establish a similar "K-theoretic positivity" for matroids. As an application, for a multiplicity-free subvariety of a product of projective spaces such that the projection onto one of the factors has birational image, we show that a transformation of its K-polynomial is Lorentzian. This partially answers a conjecture of Castillo, Cid-Ruiz, Mohammadi, and Montano. As another application, we show that the h*-vector of a simplicially positive divisor on a matroid is a Macaulay vector, affirmatively answering a question of Speyer for a new infinite family of matroids.
Multimatroids and rational curves with cyclic action
We study the connection between multimatroids and moduli spaces of rational curves with cyclic action. Multimatroids are generalizations of matroids and delta-matroids introduced by Bouchet, which naturally arise in topological graph theory. The vantage point of moduli of curves provides a tropical framework for studying multimatroids, generalizing the previous connection between type-A permutohedral varieties (Losev--Manin moduli spaces) and matroids, and the connection between type-B permutohedral varieties (Batyrev--Blume moduli spaces) and delta-matroids. Specifically, we equate a combinatorial nef cone of the moduli space with the space of $\mathbb{R}$-multimatroids, a slight generalization of multimatroids, and we introduce the independence polytopal complex of a multimatroid, whose volume is identified with an intersection number on the moduli space. As an application, for the generating set of the Chow ring of the moduli space consisting of all psi-classes and their pullbacks along certain forgetful maps, we give a combinatorial formula for their intersection numbers by relating to the volumes of independence polytopal complexes of multimatroids.
Kapranov degrees
The moduli space of stable rational curves with marked points has two distinguished families of maps: the forgetful maps, given by forgetting some of the markings, and the Kapranov maps, given by complete linear series of $ψ$-classes. The collection of all these maps embeds the moduli space into a product of projective spaces. We call the multidegrees of this embedding ``Kapranov degrees,'' which include as special cases the work of Witten, Silversmith, Gallet--Grasegger--Schicho, Castravet--Tevelev, Postnikov, Cavalieri--Gillespie--Monin, and Gillespie--Griffins--Levinson. We establish, in terms of a combinatorial matching condition, upper bounds for Kapranov degrees and a characterization of their positivity. The positivity characterization answers a question of Silversmith and gives a new proof of Laman's theorem characterizing generically rigid graphs in the plane. We achieve this by proving a recursive formula for Kapranov degrees and by using tools from the theory of error correcting codes.
Cohomologies of tautological bundles of matroids
Tautological bundles of realizations of matroids were introduced in [BEST23] as a unifying geometric model for studying matroids. We compute the cohomologies of exterior and symmetric powers of these vector bundles, and show that they depend only on the matroid of the realization. As an application, we show that the log canonical bundle of a wonderful compactification of a hyperplane arrangement complement, in particular the moduli space of pointed rational curves, has vanishing higher cohomologies.
K-classes of delta-matroids and equivariant localization
Delta-matroids are "type B" generalizations of matroids in the same way that maximal orthogonal Grassmannians are generalizations of Grassmannians. A delta-matroid analogue of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid is the interlace polynomial. We give a geometric interpretation for the interlace polynomial via the K-theory of maximal orthogonal Grassmannians. To do so, we develop a new Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch-type formula for the type B permutohedral variety.
Intersection theory of polymatroids
Polymatroids are combinatorial abstractions of subspace arrangements in the same way that matroids are combinatorial abstractions of hyperplane arrangements. By introducing augmented Chow rings of polymatroids, modeled after augmented wonderful varieties of subspace arrangements, we generalize several algebro-geometric techniques developed in recent years to study matroids. We show that intersection numbers in the augmented Chow ring of a polymatroid are determined by a matching property known as the Hall--Rado condition, which is new even in the case of matroids.
The tropical critical points of an affine matroid

We prove that the number of tropical critical points of an affine matroid (M,e) is equal to the beta invariant of M. Motivated by the computation of maximum likelihood degrees, this number is defined to be the degree of the intersection of the Bergman fan of (M,e) and the inverted Bergman fan of N=(M/e)*, where e is an element of M that is neither a loop nor a coloop. Equivalently, for a generic weight vector w on E-e, this is the number of ways to find weights (0,x) on M and y on N with x+y=w such that on each circuit of M (resp. N), the minimum x-weight (resp. y-weight) occurs at least twice. This answers a question of Sturmfels.

Matroids are combinatorial abstractions of independence, a ubiquitous notion that pervades many branches of mathematics. June Huh and his collaborators recently made spectacular breakthroughs by developing a Hodge theory of matroids that resolved several long-standing conjectures in matroid theory. We survey the main results in this development and ideas behind them.

We establish a connection between the algebraic geometry of the type B permutohedral toric variety and the combinatorics of delta-matroids. Using this connection, we compute the volume and lattice point counts of type B generalized permutohedra. Applying tropical Hodge theory to a new framework of "tautological classes of delta-matroids," modeled after certain vector bundles associated to realizable delta-matroids, we establish the log-concavity of a Tutte-like invariant for a broad family of delta-matroids that includes all realizable delta-matroids. Our results include new log-concavity statements for all (ordinary) matroids as special cases.

A flag positroid of ranks $\boldsymbol{r}:=(r_1<\dots <r_k)$ on $[n]$ is a flag matroid that can be realized by a real $r_k \times n$ matrix $A$ such that the $r_i \times r_i$ minors of $A$ involving rows $1,2,\dots,r_i$ are nonnegative for all $1\leq i \leq k$. In this paper we explore the polyhedral and tropical geometry of flag positroids, particularly when $\boldsymbol{r}:=(a, a+1,\dots,b)$ is a sequence of consecutive numbers. In this case we show that the nonnegative tropical flag variety TrFl$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0}$ equals the nonnegative flag Dressian FlDr$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0}$, and that the points $\boldsymbolμ = (μ_a,\ldots, μ_b)$ of TrFl$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0} =$ FlDr$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0}$ give rise to coherent subdivisions of the flag positroid polytope $P(\underline{\boldsymbolμ})$ into flag positroid polytopes. Our results have applications to Bruhat interval polytopes: for example, we show that a complete flag matroid polytope is a Bruhat interval polytope if and only if its $(\leq 2)$-dimensional faces are Bruhat interval polytopes. Our results also have applications to realizability questions. We define a positively oriented flag matroid to be a sequence of positively oriented matroids $(χ_1,\dots,χ_k)$ which is also an oriented flag matroid. We then prove that every positively oriented flag matroid of ranks $\boldsymbol{r}=(a,a+1,\dots,b)$ is realizable.

We use the geometry of the stellahedral toric variety to study matroids. We identify the valuative group of matroids with the cohomology ring of the stellahedral toric variety, and show that valuative, homological, and numerical equivalence relations for matroids coincide. We establish a new log-concavity result for the Tutte polynomial of a matroid, answering a question of Wagner and Shapiro-Smirnov-Vaintrob on Postnikov-Shapiro algebras, and calculate the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of matroid Schubert cells. The central construction is the "augmented tautological classes of matroids," modeled after certain vector bundles on the stellahedral toric variety.

We introduce certain torus-equivariant classes on permutohedral varieties which we call "tautological classes of matroids" as a new geometric framework for studying matroids. Using this framework, we unify and extend many recent developments in matroid theory arising from its interaction with algebraic geometry. We achieve this by establishing a Chow-theoretic description and a log-concavity property for a 4-variable transformation of the Tutte polynomial, and by establishing an exceptional Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch-type formula for permutohedral varieties that translates between K-theory and Chow theory.
Reciprocal maximum likelihood degrees of diagonal linear concentration models
We show that the reciprocal maximal likelihood degree (rmld) of a diagonal linear concentration model $\mathcal L \subseteq \mathbb{C}^n$ of dimension $r$ is equal to $(-2)^rχ_M( \textstyle\frac{1}{2})$, where $χ_M$ is the characteristic polynomial of the matroid $M$ associated to $\mathcal L$. In particular, this establishes the polynomiality of the rmld for general diagonal linear concentration models, positively answering a question of Sturmfels, Timme, and Zwiernik.
