Log Canonical Models and Positive Geometries
Constructing log canonical compactifications of open varieties is a central problem in birational geometry. Finding a natural coordinate system and obtaining the equations of these models is difficult in general. We show that for a large class of varieties explicit coordinates for the log canonical model are provided by canonical forms of positive geometries, and use this to compute the equations of these models. Our theory applies, for instance, to complements of hyperplane arrangements, cubic surfaces with lines removed, and the moduli space of marked cubic del Pezzo surfaces.
Exterior Cyclic Polytopes and Convexity of Amplituhedra
The amplituhedron is a semialgebraic set in the Grassmannian. We study convexity and duality of amplituhedra. We introduce a notion of convexity, called \textit{extendable convexity}, for real semialgebraic sets in any embedded projective variety. We show that the $k=m=2$ amplituhedron is extendably convex in the Grassmannian of lines in projective three-space. In the process we introduce a new polytope called the \emph{exterior cyclic polytope}, generalizing the cyclic polytope. It is equal to the convex hull of the amplituhedron in the Plücker embedding. We undertake a combinatorial analysis of the exterior cyclic polytope, its facets, and its dual. Finally, we introduce the \textit{(extendable) dual amplituhedron}, which is closely related to the dual of the exterior cyclic polytope. We show that the dual amplituhedron for $k=m=2$ is again an amplituhedron, where the external matrix data is changed by the twist map.
Wondertopes
Positive geometries were introduced by Arkani-Hamed--Bai--Lam as a method of computing scattering amplitudes in theoretical physics. We show that a positive geometry from a polytope admits a log resolution of singularities to another positive geometry. Our result states that the regions in a wonderful compactification of a hyperplane arrangement complement, which we call wondertopes, are positive geometries. A familiar wondertope is the curvy associahedron, which tiles the moduli space of pointed stable rational curves. Thus our work generalizes the known positive geometry structure on this moduli space.
The Chow-Lam Form
The classical Chow form encodes any projective variety by one equation. We here introduce the Chow-Lam form for subvarieties of a Grassmannian. By evaluating the Chow-Lam form at twistor coordinates, we obtain universal projection formulas. These were pioneered by Thomas Lam for positroid varieties in the study of amplituhedra, and we develop his approach further. Universal formulas for branch loci are obtained from Hurwitz-Lam forms. Our focus is on computations and applications in geometry.
Combinatorics of $m=1$ Grasstopes
A Grasstope is the image of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian $\text{Gr}_{\geq 0}(k,n)$ under a linear map $\text{Gr}(k,n)\dashrightarrow \text{Gr}(k,k+m)$. This is a generalization of the amplituhedron, a geometric object of great importance to calculating scattering amplitudes in physics. The amplituhedron is a Grasstope arising from a totally positive linear map. While amplituhedra are relatively well-studied, much less is known about general Grasstopes. We study Grasstopes in the $m=1$ case and show that they can be characterized as unions of cells of a hyperplane arrangement satisfying a certain sign variation condition, extending work of Karp and Williams. Inspired by this characterization, we also suggest a notion of a Grasstope arising from an arbitrary oriented matroid.
