The Combinatorics of Affine Deodhar Diagrams
Deodhar diagrams give a combinatorial way to compute point counts of open positroid varieties over finite fields. We introduce affine Deodhar diagrams, which extend this construction to affine patches of open positroid varieties. These diagrams are indexed by a bounded affine permutation together with a lattice path, and this extra flexibility makes them especially useful for recursive bijections. Motivated by connections with Dyck paths, open positroid varieties, and their cluster structure, we construct bijections between several classes of affine Deograms. These bijections give combinatorial proofs of point-count identities that were previously known from geometric isomorphisms.

Algebraic Geometry of Electroid Varieties
Recent work of Lam, Bychkov-Gorbounov-Kazakov-Talalaev, and Chepuri-George-Speyer gave a stratification of the totally nonnegative Lagrangian Grassmannian into electroid cells parameterized by cactus networks, paralleling Postnikov's stratification of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian by positroid cells. Electroid varieties arise as an algebro-geometric extension of electroid cells. The combinatorics of these varieties was studied by Lam in 2018. We build on this work and study the geometric properties of electroid varieties. In analogy to results of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer on positroid varieties, we show that electroid varieties are reduced, irreducible, regular in codimension one, compatibly Frobenius split, and form a stratification. We also show a decomposition of certain electroid varieties as a product of two electroid varieties. As a consequence, the grove measurement map that embeds electroid cells can be extended algebraically to embed an algebraic torus.

Brave new categorical spectral positive Schubert geometry and the categorical Dual Amplituhedron
This ArXiv preprint of my doctoral dissertation, which, at this stage, has not yet been accepted by the doctoral thesis committee, is intended both to lay the groundwork for a series of papers, and to confirm the existence of a first proposed solution to the "Dual Amplituhedron" problem posed in 2014 by Princeton physicists N. Arkani-Hamed and J. Trnka, a mathematical object which encapsulate the calculation of scattering amplitudes in high-energy particle colliders. The first part of this thesis deals with a rewriting of the positive real Grassmannian and performing the singular gluing of its positroid varieties in a new way via Spectral Algebraic Geometry of J. Lurie on "structured" spaces and a categorification of his "Tannaka Duality for Quasi-coherent Stacks", finding in this formal moduli problem, a compact yet holistic formulation via perverse intersection complexes of P. Deligne. This algebraico-geometric perspective paired with a synthetic differential-geometric perspective, namely the Differential Cohesion of B. Lawvere and U. Schreiber, subsumes infinitesimal thickenings, crystalline cohomology of De Rham stacks, the "Modalities of Structured Geometries" and the unification of their cohomologies of the underlying concrete topological etale algebraic space. The second part uses this rewriting of positive Schubert geometry and "The Cohomology of Brauer-Grothendieck Spaces" of B. Toën and B. Antieau, to show that, instead of the Grassmannian spectral Deligne-Mumford stack which is autodual in the infinity-category of prestable infinity-categories of modules on E\infty-ring spectra, the Amplituhedron, categorified in a functor between infinity topoï, possesses a concrete non-trivial dual, and has a De Rham volume, facts of interest for the expected Duality between the Standard Model of particles and String Theory. This new construction yields the Dual Amplituhedron.
Fence Complexes and Toric Degenerations of Positroid Varieties
We associate to each positroid variety in the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$ a polyhedral complex, which we call a fence complex. Fence complexes consist of unions of faces of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope $P_{k,n}$ associated to a fundamental weight $ω_k$. We show that these fence complexes are homeomorphic to closed balls. Furthermore, they endow the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope with the structure of a regular CW complex, giving a polyhedral complex presentation of the regular CW complex structure on $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)_{\geq 0}$. We also show that the Ehrhart polynomial of a fence complex equals the Hilbert polynomial of the associated positroid variety. We prove that under the Sturmfels-Gonciulea-Lakshmibai degeneration of $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$ to the toric variety of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope, positroid varieties degenerate to the reduced union of toric varieties corresponding to their fence complexes. As an application, we classify when positroid varieties contained inside hook Schubert varieties are arithmetically Gorenstein. We also derive a recursive character formula for cyclic Demazure modules, which we show is equivalent to a formula of Almousa, Gao and Huang.
The Quasisymmetric Grassmannian
We construct a complex of toric varieties we call the quasisymmetric Grassmannian inside the Grassmannian of $r$-planes in $\mathbb{C}^n$. Each irreducible component is a positroid variety and an $S_n$ translate of a toric Richardson variety of ribbon shape. We describe it as the vanishing locus of equations $Δ_AΔ_{A'}=0$ in Plücker coordinates determined by a new noncrossing combinatorial object we call the quasisymmetric Johnson graph. We give an affine paving, and show that its cohomology ring is a quasisymmetric modification of the Borel presentation of the Grassmannian's cohomology, with fundamental quasisymmetric polynomials playing the role of Schur polynomials.
Landau Analysis in the Grassmannian
Momentum twistors for scattering amplitudes in particle physics are lines in three-space. We develop Landau analysis for Feynman integrals in this setting. The resulting discriminants and resultants are identified with Hurwitz and Chow forms of incidence varieties in products of Grassmannians. We study their degrees and factorizations, and the kinematic regimes in which the fibers of the Landau map are rational or real. Identifying this map with the amplituhedron map on positroid varieties, and the associated recursions with promotion maps, yields a geometric mechanism for the emergence of positivity and cluster structures in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory.

Motivic Chern Classes of Open Projected Richardson Varieties and of Affine Schubert Cells
The open projected Richardson varieties are images of the open Richardson varieties of the complete flag variety under the canonical projection to the partial flag variety. Our main result compares the Segre motivic Chern (SMC) classes of the open projected Richardson varieties with those of the affine Schubert cells by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. The main method is the recursive relation determined by the Demazure--Lusztig operators. As another application of this recursive relation, we relate the localization of the SMC classes to the twisted Kazhdan--Lusztig R-polynomials. In the case of Grassmannians, the open projected Richardson varieties are known as the open positroid varieties. We give a combinatorial formula for the SMC classes of these varieties.

Point Count of the Top-dimensional Open Positroid Variety
In [GL24], Galashin and Lam discovered that when $k$ and $n$ are coprime, the proportion of subspaces in $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)(\mathbb{F}_q)$ that lie in the top-dimensional open positroid variety $Π_{k,n}^\circ(\mathbb{F}_q)$ is $|(\mathbb{F}_q^\times)^n|/|\mathbb{F}_{q^n}^\times|$. In this paper, I recover this point count identity by relating the split torus action on $(Π_{k,n}^\circ)_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ and an anisotropic torus action on a $\mathbb{F}_q$ rational form of $Π_{k,n}^\circ$. The main step in the point count argument and the main technical result in this paper is that cyclic rotation acts trivially on the torus-equivariant cohomology of $Π_{k,n}^\circ$ when $k$ and $n$ are coprime.

The combinatorial geometry of particle physics
Recent breakthroughs in the study of scattering amplitudes have uncovered profound and unexpected connections with combinatorial geometry. These connections range from classical structures -- such as polytopes, matroids, and Grassmannians -- to more modern developments including positroid varieties and the amplituhedron. Together they point toward the unifying framework of positive geometry, in which geometric domains canonically determine analytic functions governing scattering processes. This survey traces the emergence of positive geometry from the physics of amplitudes, building towards recent progress on amplitudes for matroids.

Global positroid varieties
Positroid subvarieties of complex Grassmannians are the images of the Richardson subvarieties of the full flag varieties under the natural projection map. Positroid varieties admit natural embedding into certain quiver Grassmannians for equioriented cyclic quivers. Varying representations of the quiver, one defines global positroid varieties inside the type A global affine Grassmannian. General fiber of a family is isomorphic to the corresponding classical positroid variety and the special fiber is a subvariety of the juggling variety. We show that the global positroid families are flat and describe their (conjecturally reduced) scheme structures. We also describe the special fibers inside the product of classical positroid varieties and realize the irreducible components of the special fibers in terms of the affine Richardson varieties.
Comparing cluster algebras on braid varieties
Braid varieties parametrize linear configurations of flags with transversality conditions dictated by positive braids. They include and generalize reduced double Bruhat cells, positroid varieties, open Bott-Samelson varieties, and Richardson varieties, among others. Recently, two cluster algebra structures were independently constructed in the coordinate rings of braid varieties: one using weaves and the other using Deodhar geometry. The main result of the article is that these two cluster algebras coincide. More generally, our comparative study matches the different concepts and results from each approach to the other, both on the combinatorial and algebraic geometric aspects.
Plabic Tangles and Cluster Promotion Maps
Inspired by the BCFW recurrence for tilings of the amplituhedron, we introduce the general framework of `plabic tangles' that utilizes plabic graphs to define rational maps between products of Grassmannians called `promotions'. The central conjecture of the paper is that promotion maps are quasi-cluster homomorphisms, which we prove for several classes of promotions. In order to define promotion maps, we utilize $m$-vector-relation configurations ($m$-VRCs) on plabic graphs. We relate $m$-VRCs to the degree (a.k.a `intersection number') of the amplituhedron map on positroid varieties and characterize all plabic trees with intersection number one and their VRCs. Finally, we show that promotion maps admit an operad structure and, supported by the class of `$4$-mass box' promotion, we point at new positivity properties for non-rational maps beyond cluster algebras. Promotion maps have important connections to the geometry and cluster structure of the amplituhedron and singularities of scattering amplitudes in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory.

Introduction to the Cohomology of the Flag Variety
One hundred years ago, Hilbert gave a list of important open problems in mathematics. His 15th problem asked for the development of a rigorous calculus explaining Schubert's enumerative results for intersecting varieties defined by rank conditions on vector spaces. Today by way of many contributions in algebraic topology, geometry, and combinatorics, we consider this solved. Yet, deep questions remain about the subtleties of actually carrying out the process. In this chapter, we hope to summarize the rigorous development of what has become known as Schubert calculus, with an eye toward computation. We discuss Grassmannians and flag varieties and their cohomology rings, following Monk's constructive algebraic approach. We derive formulas for Schur and Schubert polynomials, which represent cohomology classes of Schubert varieties. We hint at the vast literature in this area and point to the other references in the Handbook for more information. Finally, we identify open problems that remain a challenge even with modern tools at our fingertips in hopes of inspiring further contributions in this fascinating field. This is intended as the first chapter of a book entitled "Handbook of Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry: Subvarieties of the Flag Variety", a compendium of topics in the area. The book is being edited by Erik Insko, Martha Precup, and Ed Richmond. In addition to this introductory chapter, others will cover more advanced topics such as Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, generalized smooth Schubert varieties, Richardson varieties and positroid varieties, spherical and torus orbit closures, spanning line configurations, different types of Hessenberg varieties, and generalizations to Kac-Moody flag varieties, each written by experts in those areas. We hope you enjoy this chapter enough to seek out the others, and that you send us any comments or corrections you find as you read this article!
Splicing skew shaped positroids
Skew shaped positroids (or skew shaped positroid varieties) are certain Richardson varieties in the flag variety that admit a realization as explicit subvarieties of the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$. They are parametrized by a pair of Young diagrams $μ\subseteq λ$ fitting inside a $k \times (n-k)$-rectangle. For every $a = 1, \dots, n-k$, we define an explicit open set $U_a$ inside the skew shaped positroid $S^{\circ}_{λ/μ}$, and show that $U_a$ is isomorphic to the product of two smaller skew shaped positroids. Moreover, $U_a$ admits a natural cluster structure and the aforementioned isomorphism is quasi-cluster in the sense of Fraser. Our methods depend on realizing the skew shaped positroid as an explicit braid variety, and generalize the work of the first and third authors for open positroid cells in the Grassmannian.

Chern Classes of Open Projected Richardson Varieties and of Affine Schubert Cells

The open projected Richardson varieties form a stratification for the partial flag variety $G/P$. We compare the Segre--MacPherson classes of open projected Richardson varieties with those of the corresponding affine Schubert cells by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. In the case of the Grassmannian $G/P=\operatorname{Gr}_k(\mathbb{C}^n)$, the open projected Richardson varieties are known as open positroid varieties. We obtain symmetric functions that represent the Segre--MacPherson classes of these open positroid varieties, constructed explicitly in terms of pipe dreams for affine permutations.
Dimer face polynomials in knot theory and cluster algebras
The set of perfect matchings of a connected bipartite plane graph $G$ has the structure of a distributive lattice, as shown by Propp, where the partial order is induced by the height of a matching. In this article, our focus is the dimer face polynomial of $G$, which is the height generating function of all perfect matchings of $G$. We connect the dimer face polynomial on the one hand to knot theory, and on the other to cluster algebras. We show that certain dimer face polynomials are multivariate generalizations of Alexander polynomials of links, highlighting another combinatorial view of the Alexander polynomial. We also show that an arbitrary dimer face polynomial is an $F$-polynomial in the cluster algebra whose initial quiver is dual to the graph $G$. As a result, we recover a recent representation theoretic result of Bazier-Matte and Schiffler that connects $F$-polynomials and Alexander polynomials, albeit from a very different, dimer-based perspective. As another application of our results, we also show that all nonvanishing Plücker coordinates on open positroid varieties are cluster monomials.

Smooth Points on Positroid Varieties
In the Grassmannian $Gr_{\mathbb{C}}(k,n)$ we have positroid varieties $Π_f$, each indexed by a bounded affine permutation $f$ and containing torus-fixed points $λ\in Π_f$. In this paper we consider the partially ordered set consisting of quadruples $(k,n,Π_f,λ)$ (or \textit{(positroid) pairs} $(Π_f,λ)$ for short). The partial order is the ordering given by the covering relation $\lessdot$ where $(Π_f',λ') \lessdot (Π_f,λ)$ if $Π_f'$ is obtained by $Π_f$ by \textit{deletion} or \textit{contraction.} Using the results of Snider [2010], we know that positroid varieties can be studied in a neighborhood of each of these points by \textit{affine pipe dreams.} Our main theorem provides a quick test of when a positroid variety is smooth at one of these given points. It is sufficient to test smoothness of a positroid variety by using the main result to test smoothness at each of these points. These results can also be applied to the question of whether Schubert varieties in flag manifolds are smooth at points given by 321-avoiding permutations, as studied in Graham/Kreimer [2020]. We have a secondary result, which describes the minimal singular positroid pairs in our ordering - these are the positroid pairs where any deletion or contraction causes it to become smooth.

Splicing positroid varieties
We construct an explicit isomorphism between an open subset in the open positroid variety $Π_{k,n}^{\circ}$ in the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$ and the product of two open positroid varieties $Π_{k,n-a+1}^{\circ}\times Π_{k,a+k-1}^{\circ}$. In the respective cluster structures, this isomorphism is given by freezing a certain subset of cluster variables and applying a cluster quasi-equivalence.

Feigin-Odesskii brackets associated with Kodaira cycles and positroid varieties
We establish a link between open positroid varieties in the Grassmannians $G(k,n)$ and certain moduli spaces of complexes of vector bundles over Kodaira cycle $C^n$, using the shifted Poisson structure on the latter moduli spaces and relating them to a certain twist of the standard Poisson structure on $G(k,n)$. %by a bivector field on its maximal torus. This link allows us to solve a classification problem for extensions of vector bundles over $C^n$. Based on this solution we further classify the symplectic leaves of all positroid varieties in $G(k,n)$ with respect to the twisted standard Poisson structure. Moreover, we get an explicit description of the moduli stack of symplectic leaves of $G(k,n)$ with the twisted standard Poisson structure as an open substack of the stack of vector bundles on $C^n$.

Boundary Algebras of Positroids
A dimer model is a quiver with faces embedded into a disk. A consistent dimer model gives rise to a strand diagram, and hence to a positroid. The Gorenstein-projective module category over the completed boundary algebra of a dimer model was shown by Pressland to categorify a cluster structure on the corresponding positroid variety. Outside of the Grassmannian case, boundary algebras of dimer models are not well understood. We give an explicit description of the boundary algebra of a consistent dimer model as a quiver with relations calculated only from the data of the decorated permutation or, equivalently, Grassmann necklace of its positroid.
