Combinatorial geometry of the 2D Toda lattice and Davey Stewartson equation
The KP equation is a prototypical $(2+1)$-dimensional integrable PDE. Its soliton solutions are famously parametrized by the Sato Grassmannian. In seminal work, Kodama and Williams made the surprising discovery that the combinatorics of soliton solutions are intimately related to the combinatorics of the totally positive Grassmannian as pioneered by Postnikov. They introduced novel algorithmic methods inspired by polyhedral structures arising from tropical geometry. Soliton solutions to the 2D Toda lattice and the Davey--Stewartson equation, two closely related integrable systems with soliton solutions, are also classified by the Sato Grassmannian. Kodama suggested that the methods of his work with Williams could generalize to these two integrable equations. In this work, we show that this is indeed the case. We derive algorithms to produce contour plots from elements in the totally nonnegative Grassmannian in both cases. In the asymptotic setting, we recover and refine previous work of Biondini and Wang; as well as Biondini, Kireyev and Maruno.
Algebraic Geometry of Electroid Varieties
Recent work of Lam, Bychkov-Gorbounov-Kazakov-Talalaev, and Chepuri-George-Speyer gave a stratification of the totally nonnegative Lagrangian Grassmannian into electroid cells parameterized by cactus networks, paralleling Postnikov's stratification of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian by positroid cells. Electroid varieties arise as an algebro-geometric extension of electroid cells. The combinatorics of these varieties was studied by Lam in 2018. We build on this work and study the geometric properties of electroid varieties. In analogy to results of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer on positroid varieties, we show that electroid varieties are reduced, irreducible, regular in codimension one, compatibly Frobenius split, and form a stratification. We also show a decomposition of certain electroid varieties as a product of two electroid varieties. As a consequence, the grove measurement map that embeds electroid cells can be extended algebraically to embed an algebraic torus.
Revisiting $q$-Derangement Numbers via Decorated Permutations
This note aims to provide a direct combinatorial proof of the Gessel--Reutenauer--Wachs formula for $q$-derangement numbers in the setting of decorated permutations, without using the $q$-binomial inversion formula. Decorated permutations, introduced by Postnikov in his study of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, provide a natural framework for Chen's signed fixed-point model. Our proof is based on a major-index generating function for decorated permutations with a fixed number of signed fixed points, together with a sign-reversing and descent-set-preserving involution, thereby answering a question raised by Chen. This involution was discovered through human--AI collaboration.
Extremal Matchings and Height Functions
This paper studies a lattice structure for almost perfect matchings on certain planar, bipartite (plabic) graphs embedded in a disk. Postnikov's boundary measurement map, and subsequent related work, yielded that plabic graphs parameterize positroid cells within the totally nonnegative Grassmannian with the map itself given in terms of almost perfect matchings with fixed boundary condition. For finite planar bipartite graphs, Propp introduced a distributive lattice structure on their set of perfect matchings. Subsequently Muller--Speyer, provided this distributive lattice structure on the aforementioned almost perfect matchings with fixed boundary condition. Their work also identified the extremal matchings of this lattice for boundary conditions that coincide with face labels of the plabic graph given by the positroid structure. We extend this by giving an explicit construction of extremal matchings in terms of height functions and show that all possible boundary conditions of an almost perfect matching can be obtained within this construction.
Rotationally symmetric plabic graphs and the Lagrangian Grassmannian
We introduce the totally nonnegative Lagrangian Grassmannian $\rm{LG}_{\geq 0}^R (n,2n)$, a new subset of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian consisting of subspaces isotropic with respect to a certain bilinear form $R$. We describe its cell structure and show that each cell admits a representation by a rotationally symmetric (not necessarily reduced) plabic graph. Along the way, we develop new techniques for working with non-reduced plabic graphs.
Zero-free sector of the Wronski map on the totally nonnegative Grassmannian
A classical result states that if $f(z)$ is a polynomial of degree at most $n$ with nonnegative coefficients, then $f(z)$ has no zeros in the sector $|\arg(z)| < \fracπ{n}$ of the complex plane, and the bound $\fracπ{n}$ is tight. Motivated by the Shapiro--Shapiro conjecture and related problems in real Schubert calculus, we generalize this result to Wronskians of polynomials. Namely, let $f_1(z), \dots, f_k(z)$ be linearly independent polynomials of degree at most $n$ whose coefficient matrix has all nonnegative $k\times k$ minors (that is, the polynomials span an element of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian in the sense of Lusztig and Postnikov). We show that the Wronskian polynomial $\operatorname{Wr}(f_1, \dots, f_k)$ has no complex zeros in the sector $|\arg(z)| < \fracπ{n}$ (independent of $k$), and the bound $\fracπ{n}$ is tight. Our proof uses classical results of Gantmakher and Krein (1950) and Obreschkoff (1923) on sign variation.
Boundary measurements of positive networks on a cylinder of maximal rank 2 and 3
Boundary measurement matrices associated to networks on a plane correspond to certain totally nonnegative Grassmannians as shown previously by A. Postnikov. In this paper, we look to generalize this result by categorizing the boundary measurements associated to networks on a cylinder of maximal rank 2 and 3. In particular, we show that the maximal rank 3 matrices associated to networks on a cylinder are precisely the matrices in which every odd-dimensional minor is nonnegative.
A finite totally nonnegative Grassmannian
We introduce totally nonnegative Grassmannians over finite fields where an element of a finite field is nonnegative if it is a square of an element of the finite field. Explicit point counts are given in some special cases where we find new interpretations of sequences in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). We compare and contrast the theory of totally nonnegative Grassmannians over a finite field with the traditional case of the field of real numbers.
On the face stratification of the $m=2$ amplituhedron
We define and study the face stratification of the m=2 amplituhedron. We show that the face poset is an upper order ideal in the face poset of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. Our construction is consistent with earlier work of Lukowski, and we confirm various predictions of Lukowski.
Plücker inequalities for weakly separated coordinates in totally nonnegative Grassmannian
We show that the partial sums of the long Plücker relations for pairs of weakly separated Plücker coordinates oscillate around $0$ on the totally nonnegative part of the Grassmannian. Our result generalizes the classical oscillating inequalities by Gantmacher--Krein (1941) and recent results on totally nonnegative matrix inequalities by Fallat--Vishwakarma (2023). In fact we obtain a characterization of weak separability, by showing that no other pair of Plücker coordinates satisfies this property.
Weakly separated sets were initially introduced by Leclerc and Zelevinsky and are closely connected with the cluster algebra of the Grassmannian. Moreover, our work connects several fundamental objects such as weak separability, Temperley--Lieb immanants, and Plücker relations, and provides a very general and natural class of additive determinantal inequalities on the totally nonnegative part of the Grassmannian.
Combinatorics of $m=1$ Grasstopes
A Grasstope is the image of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian $\text{Gr}_{\geq 0}(k,n)$ under a linear map $\text{Gr}(k,n)\dashrightarrow \text{Gr}(k,k+m)$. This is a generalization of the amplituhedron, a geometric object of great importance to calculating scattering amplitudes in physics. The amplituhedron is a Grasstope arising from a totally positive linear map. While amplituhedra are relatively well-studied, much less is known about general Grasstopes. We study Grasstopes in the $m=1$ case and show that they can be characterized as unions of cells of a hyperplane arrangement satisfying a certain sign variation condition, extending work of Karp and Williams. Inspired by this characterization, we also suggest a notion of a Grasstope arising from an arbitrary oriented matroid.
Generalized juggling patterns, quiver Grassmannians and affine flag varieties
The goal of this paper is to clarify the connection between certain structures from the theory of totally nonnegative Grassmannians, quiver Grassmannians for cyclic quivers and the theory of local models of Shimura varieties. More precisely, we generalize the construction from our previous paper relating the combinatorics and geometry of quiver Grassmanians to that of the totally nonnegative Grassmannians. The varieties we are interested in serve as realizations of local models of Shimura varieties. We exploit quiver representation techniques to study the quiver Grassmannians of interest and, in particular, to describe explicitly embeddings into affine flag varieties which allow us to realize our quiver Grassmannians as a union of Schubert varieties therein.
Totally Nonnegative Tropical Flags and the Totally Nonnegative Flag Dressian
We study the totally nonnegative part of the complete flag variety and of its tropicalization. We show that Lusztig's notion of nonnegative complete flag variety coincides with the flags in the complete flag variety which have nonnegative Pl{ü}cker coordinates. This mirrors the characterization of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian as those points in the Grassmannian whose Pl{ü}cker coordinates are all nonnegative. We then study the tropical complete flag variety and complete flag Dressian, which are two tropical versions of the complete flag variety, capturing realizable and abstract flags of tropical linear spaces, respectively. In general, the complete flag Dressian properly contains the tropical complete flag variety. However, we show that the totally nonnegative parts of these spaces coincide.

Positroids are certain representable matroids originally studied by Postnikov in connection with the totally nonnegative Grassmannian and now used widely in algebraic combinatorics. The positroids give rise to determinantal equations defining positroid varieties as subvarieties of the Grassmannian variety. Rietsch, Knutson-Lam-Speyer, and Pawlowski studied geometric and cohomological properties of these varieties. In this paper, we continue the study of the geometric properties of positroid varieties by establishing several equivalent conditions characterizing smooth positroid varieties using a variation of pattern avoidance defined on decorated permutations, which are in bijection with positroids. This allows us to give two formulas for counting the number of smooth positroids along with two $q$-analogs. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial method for determining the dimension of the tangent space of a positroid variety at key points using an induced subgraph of the Johnson graph. We also give a Bruhat interval characterization of positroids.

Postnikov constructed a cellular decomposition of the totally nonnegative Grassmannians. The poset of cells can be described (in particular) via Grassmann necklaces. We study certain quiver Grassmannians for the cyclic quiver admitting a cellular decomposition, whose cells are naturally labeled by Grassmann necklaces. We show that the posets of cells coincide with the reversed cell posets of the cellular decomposition of the totally nonnegative Grassmannians. We investigate algebro-geometric and combinatorial properties of these quiver Grassmannians. In particular, we describe the irreducible components, study the action of the automorphism groups of the underlying representations and describe the moment graphs. We also construct a resolution of singularities for each irreducible component; the resolutions are defined as quiver Grassmannians for an extended cyclic quiver.

The totally nonnegative Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)_{\geq0}$ is the subset of the real Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$ consisting of points with all nonnegative Plücker coordinates. The circular Bruhat order is a poset isomorphic to the face poset of A. Postnikov's (2005) positroid cell decomposition of $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)_{\geq0}$. We provide a closed formula for the sum of its weighted chains in the spirit of J. Stembridge (2002).

We initiate the study of a class of polytopes, which we coin polypositroids, defined to be those polytopes that are simultaneously generalized permutohedra (or polymatroids) and alcoved polytopes. Whereas positroids are the matroids arising from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, polypositroids are "positive" polymatroids. We parametrize polypositroids using Coxeter necklaces and balanced graphs, and describe the cone of polypositroids by extremal rays and facet inequalities. We introduce a notion of (W,c)-polypositroid for a finite Weyl group W and a choice of Coxeter element c. We connect the theory of (W,c)-polypositroids to cluster algebras of finite type and to generalized associahedra. We discuss membranes, which are certain triangulated 2-dimensional surfaces inside polypositroids. Membranes extend the notion of plabic graphs from positroids to polypositroids.
The m=2 amplituhedron
The (tree) amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n, k, m}$ is introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka in 2013 in the study of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. It is defined in terms of the totally nonnegative Grassmannians. In this paper, we show that the amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n, k, m}$ for $m=2$ admits a triangulation. Our collection of cells is constructed via BCFW-type recursion. We also provide a diagrammatic interpretation of our construction.

We define two generalizations of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian and determine their topology in the case of real projective space. We find the spaces to be PL manifolds with boundary which are homotopy equivalent to another real projective space of smaller dimension. One generalization makes use of sign variation while the other uses boundary measurement. Spaces arising from boundary measurement are shown to admit Cohen-Macaulay triangulations.
