The main aim of this paper is to establish a deep link between the totally nonnegative grassmannian and the quantum grassmannian. More precisely, under the assumption that the deformation parameter $q$ is transcendental, we show that "quantum positroids" are completely prime ideals in the quantum grassmannian $A$. As a consequence, we obtain that torus-invariant prime ideals in the quantum grassmannian are generated by polynormal sequences of quantum Plücker coordinates and give a combinatorial description of these generating sets. We also give a topological description of the poset of torus-invariant prime ideals in $A$, and prove a version of the orbit method for torus-invariant objects. Finally, we construct separating Ore sets for all torus-invariant primes in $A$. The latter is the first step in the Brown-Goodearl strategy to establish the orbit method for (quantum) grassmannians.

We show that the totally nonnegative part of a partial flag variety $G/P$ (in the sense of Lusztig) is a regular CW complex, confirming a conjecture of Williams. In particular, the closure of each positroid cell inside the totally nonnegative Grassmannian is homeomorphic to a ball, confirming a conjecture of Postnikov.

Planar bicolored (plabic) graphs are combinatorial objects introduced by Postnikov to give parameterizations of the positroid cells of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian $\text{Gr}^{\geq 0}(n,k)$. Any two plabic graphs for the same positroid cell can be related by a sequence of certain moves. The flip graph has plabic graphs as vertices and has edges connecting the plabic graphs which are related by a single move. A recent result of Galashin shows that plabic graphs can be seen as cross-sections of zonotopal tilings for the cyclic zonotope $Z(n,3)$. Taking this perspective, we show that the fundamental group of the flip graph is generated by cycles of length 4, 5, and 10, and use this result to prove a related conjecture of Dylan Thurston about triple crossing diagrams. We also apply our result to make progress on an instance of the generalized Baues problem.

The KP equation is a nonlinear dispersive wave equation which provides an excellent model for resonant interactions of shallow-water waves. It is well known that regular soliton solutions of the KP equation may be constructed from points in the totally nonnegative Grassmannian Gr$(N,M)_{\geq 0}$. Kodama and Williams studied the asymptotic patterns (tropical limit) of KP solitons, called soliton graphs, and showed that they correspond to Postnikov's Le-diagrams. In this paper, we consider soliton graphs for the KP hierarchy, a family of commuting flows which are compatible with the KP equation. For the positive Grassmannian Gr$(2,M)_{>0}$, Kodama and Williams showed that soliton graphs are in bijection with triangulations of the $M$-gon. We extend this result to Gr$(N,M)_{>0}$ when $N=3$ and $M=6,7$ and $8$. In each case, we show that soliton graphs are in bijection with Postnikov's plabic graphs, which generalize Le-diagrams.

The nonnegative Grassmannian is a cell complex with rich geometric, algebraic, and combinatorial structures. Its study involves interesting combinatorial objects, such as positroids and plabic graphs. Remarkably, the same combinatorial structures appeared in many other areas of mathematics and physics, e.g., in the study of cluster algebras, scattering amplitudes, and solitons. We discuss new ways to think about these structures. In particular, we identify plabic graphs and more general Grassmannian graphs with polyhedral subdivisions induced by 2-dimensional projections of hypersimplices. This implies a close relationship between the positive Grassmannian and the theory of fiber polytopes and the generalized Baues problem. This suggests natural extensions of objects related to the positive Grassmannian.
An algorithm to construct the Le diagram associated to a Grassmann necklace

Le diagrams and Grassmann necklaces both index the collection of positroids in the nonnegative Grassmannian $Gr_{\geq 0}(k,n)$, but they excel at very different tasks: for example, the dimension of a positroid is easily extracted from its Le diagram, while the list of bases of a positroid is far more easily obtained from its Grassmann necklace. Explicit bijections between the two are therefore desirable. An algorithm for turning a Le diagram into a Grassmann necklace already exists; in this note we give the reverse algorithm.

We prove that three spaces of importance in topological combinatorics are homeomorphic to closed balls: the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, the compactification of the space of electrical networks, and the cyclically symmetric amplituhedron.
Positroids Induced by Rational Dyck Paths
A rational Dyck path of type $(m,d)$ is an increasing unit-step lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(m,d) \in \mathbb{Z}^2$ that never goes above the diagonal line $y = (d/m)x$. On the other hand, a positroid of rank $d$ on the ground set $[d+m]$ is a special type of matroid coming from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. In this paper we describe how to naturally assign a rank $d$ positroid on the ground set $[d+m]$, which we name rational Dyck positroid, to each rational Dyck path of type $(m,d)$. We show that such an assignment is one-to-one. There are several families of combinatorial objects in one-to-one correspondence with the set of positroids. Here we characterize some of these families for the positroids we produce, namely Grassmann necklaces, decorated permutations, Le-diagrams, and move-equivalence classes of plabic graphs. Finally, we describe the matroid polytope of a given rational Dyck positroid.

Le-diagrams are combinatorial objects that parametrize cells of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, called positroid cells, and each Le-diagram gives rise to a cluster algebra which is believed to be isomorphic to the coordinate ring of the corresponding positroid variety. We study quivers arising from these diagrams and show that they can be constructed from the well-behaved quivers associated to Grassmannians by deleting and merging certain vertices. Then, we prove that quivers coming from arbitrary Le-diagrams, and more generally reduced plabic graphs, admit a particular sequence of mutations called a green-to-red sequence.

The (tree) amplituhedron A(n,k,m) is the image in the Grassmannian Gr(k,k+m) of the totally nonnegative part of Gr(k,n), under a (map induced by a) linear map which is totally positive. It was introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka in 2013 in order to give a geometric basis for the computation of scattering amplitudes in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. When k+m=n, the amplituhedron is isomorphic to the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, and when k=1, the amplituhedron is a cyclic polytope. While the case m=4 is most relevant to physics, the amplituhedron is an interesting mathematical object for any m. In this paper we study it in the case m=1. We start by taking an orthogonal point of view and define a related "B-amplituhedron" B(n,k,m), which we show is isomorphic to A(n,k,m). We use this reformulation to describe the amplituhedron in terms of sign variation. We then give a cell decomposition of the amplituhedron A(n,k,1) using the images of a collection of distinguished cells of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. We also show that A(n,k,1) can be identified with the complex of bounded faces of a cyclic hyperplane arrangement, and describe how its cells fit together. We deduce that A(n,k,1) is homeomorphic to a ball.
The Exchange Graphs of Weakly Separated Collections
Weakly separated collections arise in the cluster algebra derived from the Plücker coordinates on the nonnegative Grassmannian. Oh, Postnikov, and Speyer studied weakly separated collections over a general Grassmann necklace $\mathcal{I}$ and proved the connectivity of every exchange graph. Oh and Speyer later introduced a generalization of exchange graphs that we call $\mathcal{C}$-constant graphs. They characterized these graphs in the smallest two cases. We prove an isomorphism between exchange graphs and a certain class of $\mathcal{C}$-constant graphs. We use this to extend Oh and Speyer's characterization of these graphs to the smallest four cases, and we present a conjecture on a bound on the maximal order of these graphs. In addition, we fully characterize certain classes of these graphs in the special cases of cycles and trees.

A plabic graph is a planar bicolored graph embedded in a disk, which satisfies some combinatorial conditions. Postnikov's boundary measurement map takes the space of positive edge weights of a plabic graph $G$ to a positroid cell in some totally nonnegative Grassmannian. In this note, we investigate plabic graphs which are symmetric about a line of reflection, up to reversing the colors of vertices. These symmetric plabic graphs arise naturally in the study of total positivity for the Lagrangian Grassmannian. We characterize various combinatorial objects associated with symmetric plabic graphs, and describe the subset of a Grassmannian which can be realized by symmetric weightings of symmetric plabic graphs.

These are lecture notes intended to supplement my second lecture at the Current Developments in Mathematics conference in 2014. In the first half of article, we give an introduction to the totally nonnegative Grassmannian together with a survey of some more recent work. In the second half of the article, we give a definition of a Grassmann polytope motivated by work of physicists on the amplituhedron. We propose to use Schubert calculus and canonical bases to replace linear algebra and convexity in the theory of polytopes.

The totally nonnegative Grassmannian is the set of k-dimensional subspaces V of R^n whose nonzero Pluecker coordinates all have the same sign. Gantmakher and Krein (1950) and Schoenberg and Whitney (1951) independently showed that V is totally nonnegative iff every vector in V, when viewed as a sequence of n numbers and ignoring any zeros, changes sign at most k-1 times. We generalize this result from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian to the entire Grassmannian, showing that if V is generic (i.e. has no zero Pluecker coordinates), then the vectors in V change sign at most m times iff certain sequences of Pluecker coordinates of V change sign at most m-k+1 times. We also give an algorithm which, given a non-generic V whose vectors change sign at most m times, perturbs V into a generic subspace whose vectors also change sign at most m times. We deduce that among all V whose vectors change sign at most m times, the generic subspaces are dense. These results generalize to oriented matroids. As an application of our results, we characterize when a generalized amplituhedron construction, in the sense of Arkani-Hamed and Trnka (2013), is well defined. We also give two ways of obtaining the positroid cell of each V in the totally nonnegative Grassmannian from the sign patterns of vectors in V.
Interlacing networks: birational RSK, the octahedron recurrence, and Schur function identities

Motivated by the problem of giving a bijective proof of the fact that the birational RSK correspondence satisfies the octahedron recurrence, we define interlacing networks, which are certain planar directed networks with a rigid structure of sources and sinks. We describe an involution that swaps paths in these networks and leads to Plücker-like three-term relations among path weights. We show that indeed these relations follow from the Plücker relations in the Grassmannian together with some simple rank properties of the matrices corresponding to our interlacing networks. The space of matrices obeying these rank properties forms the closure of a cell in the matroid stratification of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. Not only does the octahedron recurrence for RSK follow immediately from the three-term relations for interlacing networks, but also these relations imply some interesting identities of Schur functions reminiscent of those obtained by Fulmek and Kleber. These Schur function identities lead to some results on Schur positivity for expressions of the form $s_νs_ρ - s_λs_μ$.

Plabic graphs are interesting combinatorial objects used to study the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. Faces of plabic graphs are labeled by $k$-element sets of positive integers, and a collection of such $k$-element sets are the face labels of a plabic graph if that collection forms a maximal weakly separated collection. There are moves that one can apply to plabic graphs, and thus to maximal weakly separated collections, analogous to mutations of seeds in cluster algebras. In this short note, we show that if two maximal weakly separated collections can be mutated from one to another, then one can do so while freezing the face labels they have in common.

There are numerous combinatorial objects associated to a Grassmannian permutation $w_λ$ that index cells of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. We study several of these objects and their $q$-analogues in the case of permutations $w$ that are not necessarily Grassmannian. We give two main results: first, we show that certain acyclic orientations, rook placements avoiding a diagram of $w$, and fillings of a diagram of $w$ are equinumerous for all permutations $w$. Second, we give a $q$-analogue of a result of Hultman-Linusson-Shareshian-Sjöstrand by showing that under a certain pattern condition the Poincaré polynomial for the Bruhat interval of $w$ essentially counts invertible matrices avoiding a diagram of $w$ over a finite field. In addition to our main results, we include at the end a number of open questions.

We study the dimer model for a planar bipartite graph N embedded in a disk, with boundary vertices on the boundary of the disk. Counting dimer configurations with specified boundary conditions gives a point in the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. Considering pairing probabilities for the double-dimer model gives rise to Grassmann analogues of Rhoades and Skandera's Temperley-Lieb immanants. The same problem for the (probably novel) triple-dimer model gives rise to the combinatorics of Kuperberg's webs and Grassmann analogues of Pylyavskyy's web immanants. This draws a connection between the square move of plabic graphs (or urban renewal of planar bipartite graphs), and Kuperberg's square reduction of webs. Our results also suggest that canonical-like bases might be applied to the dimer model.
We furthermore show that these functions on the Grassmannian are compatible with restriction to positroid varieties. Namely, our construction gives bases for the degree two and degree three components of the homogeneous coordinate ring of a positroid variety that are compatible with the cyclic group action.

We construct a compactification of the space of circular planar electrical networks studied by Curtis-Ingerman-Morrow and De Verdiere-Gitler-Vertigan, using cactus networks. We embed this compactification as a linear slice of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, and relate Kenyon and Wilson's grove measurements to Postnikov's boundary measurements. Intersections of the slice with the positroid stratification leads to a class of electroid varieties, indexed by matchings. The partial order on matchings arising from electrical networks is shown to be dual to a subposet of affine Bruhat order. The analogues of matroids in this setting are certain distinguished collections of non-crossing partitions.
