Solution to an open problem on the computational complexity of immanant
Immanants are a class of generalized matrix functions associated with the irreducible characters of the symmetric group. Bürgisser [SIAM J. Comput., 30 (2000), pp. 1023--1040] proved that the computation of hook immanants and immanants corresponding to rectangular Young diagrams of polynomially growing width is VNP-complete under $p$-projections. And he posed an open problem: whether the family of immanants corresponding to rectangular Young diagrams of width $2$ is VNP-complete under $p$-projections. This paper gives a solution to this problem. We prove that, over any field of characteristic zero, the immanant families associated with rectangular Young diagrams of width $2$ and of length $2$ are both VNP-complete under $p$-projections.
Nearly permanental cospectral graphs
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ with adjacency matrix $A= (a_{ij})$. The \emph{determinant} and the \emph{permanen}t of the matrix $A$ are defined as \[\mathrm{det}A= \sum_{σ\in S_n}\mathrm{sgn}(σ) \prod_{i=1}^n a_{iσ(i)}\quad\text{and}\quad\mathrm{per}A= \sum_{σ\in S_n} \prod_{i=1}^n a_{iσ(i)},\]respectively. The polynomials $φ(G;x) =\mathrm{det}(xI-A(G))$ and $π(G;x) =\mathrm{per}(xI-A(G))$ are called the \emph{characteristic polynomial} and the \emph{permanental polynomial} of $G$, respectively. Two graphs are said to be \emph{nearly cospectral} with respect to the determinant (resp. permanent) if the difference of their characteristic (resp. permanental) polynomials is a constant. Lv et al. introduced the nearly cospectral graphs problem with respect to the determinant, and provided partial results in the case modulo 4. In this paper, we mainly prove that the corresponding results also hold for the nearly cospectral graphs problem with respect to the permanent. The determinant and permanent are the immanants corresponding to the irreducible characters $(1^n)$ and $(n)$ of the symmetric group $ S_n $, respectively. Here, the \emph{immanant} $d_λ(A)$ of $A$ is defined as \[d_λ(A) = \sum_{σ\in S_n} χ_λ(σ) \prod_{i=1}^n a_{iσ(i)},\] where $χ_λ$ is the irreducible character of $ S_n $ indexed by the partition $ λ$. The immanantal polynomial of $G$ associated with $ χ_λ$ is given by $ φ_λ(G;x)=d_λ(xI-A) $. In this paper, we also establish a similar result for nearly immanantal cospectral graphs in $\mathbb{F}_2[x]$ for all irreducible characters $χ_λ$.
Temperley-Lieb Immanants of Ribbon Decomposition Matrices
Ribbon decomposition matrices give determinantal formulas for skew Schur functions that include as special cases the classical Jacobi-Trudi, Giambelli, and Lascoux-Pragacz formulas. We prove that certain elements of Lusztig's dual canonical basis, called Temperley-Lieb immanants, are Schur-positive when evaluated on ribbon decomposition matrices. We conjecture that this positivity holds for all elements of the dual canonical basis. This is known in the special case of Jacobi-Trudi matrices by a result of Haiman.
On immanants of Cayley tables
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group of order $n$ and let $\mathcal M_G=(x_{a+b})_{a,b\in G}$ be the Cayley table of $G$. Let $\text{imm}_λ(\mathcal M_G)$ be the immanant of $\mathcal M_G$ with respect to a partition $λ$ and $\mathcal I_λ(G)$ be the number of formally different monomials occurring in $\text{imm}_λ(\mathcal M_G)$ (in particular, we denote by $\mathcal P(G)$ (resp. $\mathcal D(G)$) for the corresponding quantity for $\text{per}(\mathcal M_G)$ (resp. $\text{det}(\mathcal M_G)$) for simplicity). The study of $\mathcal P(G)$ and $\mathcal D(G)$ lies at the intersection of algebraic combinatorics and additive combinatorics. In this paper, we prove the following results.
(1) If $|G|$ is a prime power, then
$$\mathcal P(G)=\mathcal D(G).$$
(2) If $|G|$ is odd, then $$\mathcal I_{(n-1,1)}(G)= \mathcal I_{(2,1^{n-2})}(G)=0,$$ and if $|G|\equiv 2\pmod 4$, then $$\mathcal I_{(n-1,1)}(G)=\mathcal P(G)\quad
\text{and}\quad
\mathcal I_{(2,1^{n-2})}(G)=\mathcal D(G).$$
(3) If $|G|$ is odd and $|G|\ge 7$, then $$ \text{imm}_{(4,1^{n-4})}(\mathcal M_G)=\text{imm}_{(2,2,2,1^{n-6})}(\mathcal M_G).$$
Nonlinear maps preserving the polynomial
Let $\mathbb F$ be a field and $P \in \mathbb F [x_1,\ldots, x_n]$ be a homogeneous polynomial such that $|\mathbb F| > °(P)$ and $φ, ψ\colon \mathbb F^n \to \mathbb F^n$ be two maps such that $P(\mathbf{x} + λ\mathbf{y}) = P(φ(\mathbf{x}) + λψ(\mathbf{y}))$ for all $λ\in \mathbb F$ and $\mathbf{x}, \mathbf{y} \in \mathbb F^n.$
We provide the characterization of all such $φ$ and $ψ$ for all polynomials in the case if $\mathrm{char}(\mathbb F) = 0$ and for all polynomials satisfying certain condition in the case if $\mathrm{char}(\mathbb F) > 0$. This characterization generalizes the existing results regarding the linear maps on matrices preserving the determinant, the immanant and other homogeneous polynomial functions of matrix entries.
To obtain the main result of this paper, we introduce the vector space $\mathcal L_{P} \subseteq {\mathbb F^n}^*$ spanned by the range of the gradient field of $P \in \mathbb F[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$. Being a linear invariant associated with $P,$ this space has several remarkable properties and may also be used for studying the linear maps preserving $P$.
In addition, we demonstrate how the main result could be applied to the particular polynomial matrix invariants. Namely, we provide an explicit description of corresponding pairs of nonlinear maps $φ, ψ$ for the case where $P$ is equal to the Cullis' determinant of $n\times k$ rectangular matrix (with the assumption that $n \ge k + 2$ and $k \ge 3$).
Quantum Super Littlewood Correspondences
In this paper, we study the Littlewood theory associated with the quantum super immanants and supersymmetric polynomials, including both the super case and the quantum generalization. In the setting of quantum super Schur-Weyl duality between the quantum superalgebra $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n})$ and the Iwahori-Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}_r$ of type A, we explicitly construct basis vectors of the $(U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n}), \mathcal{H}_r)$-bimodule on the tensor product space $(\mathbb{C}^{m|n})^{\otimes r}$. Using this construction, we interpret the quantum super immanants via weight spaces of covariant tensor representations of $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n})$.
Newton polytopes of immanants of some combinatorial matrices
The immanants of combinatorial matrices have many significant properties, including m-positivity and Schur positivity. While the immanants of Jacobi-Trudi matrices are known to be both m-positive and Schur positive, those of Giambelli matrices have only been proven to be m-positive, with Schur positivity remaining a conjecture. These positivity properties rely heavily on lattice path interpretations. In this paper, we study the Newton polytopes of immanants for these two classes of matrices. Using the lattice path method, we verify the saturation property for the Newton polytopes of Jacobi-Trudi matrices in special cases. For Giambelli matrices, we prove that this property holds for all immanants. To achieve this, we obtain the explicit coefficients of the largest monomial (in the dominance order) in the monomial expansion of the immanants of Giambelli matrices.
Immanantal polynomials of the linear combination matrices of graphs
In this paper, we focus on the study of immanantal polynomials for linear combination matrices composed of the degree matrix and adjacency matrix of a graph. First, applying the concept of vertex orientation for general graphs, we provide a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the immanantal polynomials for the linear combination matrices of graphs, and we also characterize the bounds of these coefficients. These bounds implicitly encompass the existing results of Chan and Lam on trees and bipartite graphs. Furthermore, we give a solution to the open problem posed by Merris. Second, we characterize the first six coefficients of the hook immanantal polynomial. And the necessary and sufficient condition under which the linear combination matrices of two regular graphs have the same hook immanantal polynomial is proved. Third, we generalize the Frobenius--König theorem and the Laplace expansion theorem to immanants. Using these two theorems, we show that the star degree of a graph is always a lower bound for the multiplicity of a certain root of the immanantal polynomial of its linear combination matrix. Finally, we derive formulas for the first six coefficients of the hook immanantal polynomial for several important graph matrices.
Super-immanants and Littlewood correspondences
In this paper, we introduce the notion of super-immanants for supermatrices over a supercommutative algebra. Using the super Schur-Weyl duality we show that the super immanants play a significant role in covariant tensor representations of the general linear Lie superalgebra. Among various things, we obtain a supertrace formula for super-immanants, which generalizes Kostant's trace formula to the super setting. Furthermore, we show that the Littlewood correspondences between super-immanants and supersymmetric polynomials establish an isomorphism between their corresponding algebras.
Temperley-Lieb Immanants, Key Positivity, and Demazure Crystals
The main goal of this paper is to extend three important Schur positivity results to key positivity, replacing all Schur polynomials in relevant expressions with flagged Schur polynomials. Namely, we first show that the Temperley-Lieb immanants of (many) flagged Jacobi-Trudi matrices are key positive. Using this result, we give a combinatorial rule for the key expansion of (most) products of flagged skew Schur polynomials, and also give a log concavity result inspired by that of Lam-Postnikov-Pylyavskyy. The main tools in our proofs are Demazure crystals, and the recently defined shuffle tableaux of Nguyen and Pylyavskyy. In order to prove our main results, we must develop a new characterization of Demazure crystals, which builds off of prior work of Assaf and Gonzalez. This characterization may be useful in other contexts.
Hadamard Products of dual Jacobi-Trudi matrices
We study positivity properties of Hadamard products of Jacobi-Trudi matrices. Maló proved that the Hadamard (entrywise) product of two totally positive upper-triangular Toeplitz matrices whose Toeplitz sequences are the coefficient sequences of real-rooted polynomials with nonpositive zeros is again totally positive. Sokal conjectured that this result can be strengthened to total monomial positivity for the Hadamard product of Jacobi-Trudi matrices. In this paper we show that Temperley-Lieb immanants are Schur positive for Hadamard products of Jacobi-Trudi matrices given by ribbon-like skew shapes. In particular, we affirm Sokal's conjecture for minors given by ribbon-like skew shapes. Moreover, we provide a manifestly positive Schur expansion for Temperley-Lieb immanants evaluated on the Hadamard product of Jacobi-Trudi matrices indexed by ribbons. In addition, for the ribbon case, we construct a corresponding representation, offering a representation-theoretic proof of the Schur positivity.
Hook immanantal inequalities for totally nonnegative matrices
Given a weakly decreasing positive integer sequence $λ= (λ_1,\dotsc,λ_\ell)$ summing to $n$, let $χ^λ$ denote the irreducible character of the symmetric group $S_n$ indexed by $λ$. This representation has dimension $χ^λ(e)$, where $e$ is the identity element of $S_n$. Let $\mathrm{Imm}_{χ^λ}$ denote the corresponding irreducible character immanant, the function on $n \times n$ matrices $A = (a_{i,j})$ defined by $\mathrm{Imm}_{χ^λ}(A) := \sum_{w \in S_n} χ^λ(w) a_{1,w_1} \cdots a_{n,w_n}$. Merris conjectured [Linear Multilinear Algebra 14 (1983) pp. 21--35] and Heyfron proved [Linear Multilinear Algebra 24 (1988) pp. 65--78] that irreducible character immanants indexed by ``hook'' sequences $(k, 1, \dotsc, 1)$ satisfy the inequalities $\mathrm{per}(A)=\frac{\mathrm{Imm}_{χ^n}(A)}{χ^{n}(e)}\geq \frac{\mathrm{Imm}_{χ^{n-1,1}}(A)}{χ^{n-1,1}(e)}\geq \frac{\mathrm{Imm}_{χ^{ n-2,1,1}}(A)}{χ^{n-2,1,1}(e)}\geq \cdots \geq \frac{\mathrm{Imm}_{χ^{1,\dotsc,1}}(A)}{χ^{1,\dotsc,1}(e)}=\det(A)$ whenever $A$ is an $n \times n$ Hermitian positive semidefinite matrix. We prove that the same inequalities hold whenever $A$ is an $n \times n$ totally nonnegative matrix.
Hook immanantal equalities for linear combination matrices of (di)graphs and their applications
Let $χ_λ$ be an irreducible character of the symmetric group $S_n$. For an $n \times n$ matrix $M = (m_{ij})$, define the immanant of $M$ corresponding to $χ_λ$ by \begin{eqnarray*} d_λ(M) = \sum_{σ\in S_n} χ_λ(σ) \prod_{i=1}^n m_{iσ(i)}. \end{eqnarray*} For $λ= (k, 1^{n-k})$, the immanant $d_{(k, 1^{n-k})}(M)$ is called the hook immanant and denoted by $d_k(M)$. The hook immanant polynomial of matrix $M$ is defined as $d_{k}(xI_n - M)$, where $I_n$ is the $n \times n$ identity matrix. Let $G$ and $\overrightarrow{G}$ be a graph and a digraph, respectively. Suppose that $D(G)$ and $A(G)$ (resp. $D(\overrightarrow{G})$ and $A(\overrightarrow{G})$) are the degree matrix and adjacency matrix of $G$ (resp. $\overrightarrow{G}$), respectively. In this paper, we characterize two hook immanantal equalities for the linear combination of matrices $βD(G)+γA(G)$ and $βD(\overrightarrow{G})+γA(\overrightarrow{G})$, where $β$ and $γ$ are real numbers. As applications, we derive recursive formulas for the hook immanantal polynomials and hook immanants of graph matrices.
Web Diagrams of Cluster Variables for Grassmannian Gr(4,8)
Gaetz, Pechenik, Pfannerer, Striker, and Swanson introduced the concept of hourglass plabic graphs and provided a method for computing web diagrams and invariants corresponding to $4\times n$ Young tableaux, while Elkin, Musiker, and Wright applied Lam's method to explicitly compute the webs compatible with cluster variables in Gr(3,n) and their twists, namely, the preimages of the immanant map introduced by Fraser, Lam, and Le. In this paper, we use these two methods to compute both the web diagrams and the dual webs corresponding to quadratic and cubic cluster variables in the Grassmannian cluster algebra C[Gr(4,8)].
Twists, Higher Dimer Covers, and Web Duality for Grassmannian Cluster Algebras
We study a twisted version of Fraser, Lam, and Le's higher boundary measurement map, using face weights instead of edge weights, thereby providing Laurent polynomial expansions, in Plücker coordinates, for twisted web immanants for Grassmannians. In some small cases, Fraser, Lam, and Le observe a phenomenon they call "web duality'', where web immanants coincide with web invariants, and they conjecture that this duality corresponds to transposing the standard Young tableaux that index basis webs. We show that this duality continues to hold for a large set of $\text{SL}_3$ and $\text{SL}_4$ webs. Combining this with our twisted higher boundary measurement map, we recover and extend formulas of Elkin-Musiker-Wright for twists of certain cluster variables. We also provide evidence supporting conjectures of Fomin-Pylyavskyy as well as one by Cheung-Dechant-He-Heyes-Hirst-Li concerning classification of cluster variables of low Plücker degree in $\mathbb{C}[\text{Gr}(3,n)]$.
On the edge reconstruction of the second immanantal polynomials of undirected graph and digraph
Let $M=(m_{ij})$ be an $n\times n$ matrix. The second immanant of matrix $M$ is defined by \begin{eqnarray*} d_{2}(M)=\sum_{σ\in S_{n}}χ_{2}(σ)\prod_{s=1}^{n}m_{sσ(s)}, \end{eqnarray*} where $χ_{2}$ is the irreducible character of $S_{n}$ corresponding to the partition $(2^{1},1^{n-2})$. The polynomial $d_{2}(xI-M)$ is called the second immanantal polynomial of matrix $M$. Denote by $D(G)$ (resp. $D(\overrightarrow{G})$) and $A(G)$ (resp. $A(\overrightarrow{G})$) the diagonal matrix of vertex degrees and the adjacency matrix of undirected graph $G$ (resp. digraph $\overrightarrow{G}$), respectively. In this article, we prove that $d_{2}(xI-A(G))$ (resp. $d_{2}(xI-A(\overrightarrow{G}))$) can be reconstructed from the second immanantal polynomials of the adjacency matrix of all subgraphs in $\{G-uv,G-u-v|uv\in E(G)\}$ (resp. $\{\overrightarrow{G}-e|e\in E(\overrightarrow{G})\}$). Furthermore, the polynomial $d_{2}(xI-D(\overrightarrow{G})\pm A(\overrightarrow{G}))$ can also be reconstructed by the second immanantal polynomials of the (signless) Laplacian matrixs of all subgraphs in $\{\overrightarrow{G}-e|e\in E(\overrightarrow{G})\}$, respectively.
Shuffle Tableaux, Littlewood--Richardson Coefficients, and Schur Log-Concavity
We give a new formula for the Littlewood--Richardson coefficients in terms of peelable tableaux compatible with shuffle tableaux, in the same fashion as Remmel--Whitney rule. This gives an efficient way to compute generalized Littlewood--Richardson coefficients for Temperley--Lieb immanants of Jacobi--Trudi matrices. We will also show that our rule behaves well with Bender--Knuth involutions, recovering the symmetry of Littlewood--Richardson coefficients. As an application, we use our rule to prove a special case of a Schur log-concavity conjecture by Lam--Postnikov--Pylyavskyy.
Quantum Littlewood correspondences
In the 1940s Littlewood formulated three fundamental correspondences for the immanants and Schur symmetric functions on the general linear group, which establish deep connections between representation theory of the symmetric group and the general linear group parallel to the Schur-Weyl duality. In this paper, we introduce the notion of quantum immanants in the quantum coordinate algebra using primitive idempotents of the Hecke algebra. By employing $R$-matrix techniques, we establish the quantum analog of Littlewood correspondences between quantum immanants and Schur functions for the quantum coordinate algebra. In the setting of the Schur-Weyl-Jimbo duality, we construct an exact correspondence between the Gelfand-Tsetlin bases of the irreducible representations of the quantum enveloping algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}(n))$ and Young's orthonormal basis of an irreducible representation of the Hecke algebra $\mathcal H_m$. This isomorphism leads to our trace formula for the quantum immanants, which settled the generalization problem
of $q$-analog of Kostant's formular for $λ$-immanants. As applications, we also derive general $q$-Littlewood-Merris-Watkins identities and $q$-Goulden-Jackson identities as special cases of the quantum Littlewood correspondence III.
Chevalley operations on TNN Grassmannians
Lusztig showed that invertible totally nonnegative (TNN) matrices form a semigroup generated by positive diagonal matrices and Chevalley generators. From its Grassmann analogue, we introduce Chevalley operations on index sets, which we show have a rich variety of applications. We first completely classify all inequalities that are quadratic in Plucker coordinates over the TNN part of the Grassmannian: \[\sum_{I,J}c_{I,J}Δ_IΔ_J\ge 0\quad over\quad \mathrm{Gr}^{\ge 0}(m,m+n)\] where each $c_{I,J}$ is real, and $Δ_I,Δ_J$ are Plucker coordinates with a homogeneity condition. Using an idea of Gekhtman-Shapiro-Vainshtein, we also explain how our Chevalley operations can be motivated from cluster mutations, and lead to working in Grassmannians of smaller dimension, akin to cluster algebras.
We then present several applications of Chevalley operations. First, we obtain certificates for the above inequalities via sums of coefficients $c_{I,J}$ over 321-avoiding permutations and involutions; we believe this refined results of Rhoades-Skandera for TNN-matrix inequalities via their Temperley-Lieb immanant idea.
Second, we provide a novel proof via Chevalley operations of Lam's log-supermodularity of Plucker coordinates. This has several consequences: (a) Each positroid, corresponding to the positroid cells in Postnikov's decomposition of the TNN Grassmannian, is a distributive lattice. (b) It also yields numerical positivity in the main result of Lam-Postnikov-Pylyavskyy. (c) We show the coordinatewise monotonicity of ratios of Schur polynomials, first proved by Khare-Tao and which is the key result they use to obtain quantitative estimates for positivity preservers.
Third, we employ Chevalley operations to show that the majorization order over partitions implicates a partial order for induced character immanants over TNN matrices, proved originally by Skandera-Soskin.
