Quasi-immanants
For an integer partition $ λ$ of $n$ and an $n \times n$ matrix $A$, consider the expansion of the immanant $\text{Imm}^λ(A)$ as a sum indexed by permutations $σ$ of order $n$, with coefficients given by the irreducible characters $χ^λ(\text{ctype}(σ))$ of the symmetric group $S_{n}$, for the cycle type $\text{ctype}(σ) \vdash n$ of $σ$. Skandera et al. have introduced combinatorial interpretations of a generalization of immanants given by replacing the coefficient $χ^λ(\text{ctype}(σ))$ with preimages with respect to the Frobenius morphism of elements among the distinguished bases of the algebra $\textsf{Sym}$ of symmetric functions. Since $ \textsf{Sym}$ is contained in the algebra $\textsf{QSym}$ of quasisymmetric functions, this leads us to further generalize immanants with the use of quasisymmetric functions. Since bases of $ \textsf{QSym}$ are indexed by integer compositions, we make use of cycle compositions in place of cycle types to define the family of quasi-immanants introduced in this paper. This is achieved through the use of the quasisymmetric power sum bases due to Ballantine et al., and we prove a combinatorial formula for the coefficients arising in an analogue, given by a special case of quasi-immanants associated with quasisymmetric Schur functions, of second immanants.
Temperley-Lieb Crystals
Elements of Lusztig's dual canonical bases are Schur-positive when evaluated on (generalized) Jacobi-Trudi matrices. This deep property was proved by Rhoades and Skandera, relying on a result of Haiman, and ultimately on the (proof of) Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture. For a particularly tractable part of the dual canonical basis - called Temperley-Lieb immanants - we give a generalization of Littlewood-Richardson rule: we provide a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficient of a particular Schur function in the evaluation of a particular Temperley-Lieb immanant on a particular Jacobi-Trudi matrix. For this we introduce shuffle tableaux, and apply Stembridge's axioms to show that certain graphs on shuffle tableaux are type $A$ Kashiwara crystals.
Vanishing Immanants
We classify all the irreducible characters of a symmetric group such that the induced immanant function $d_χ$ vanishes identically on alternate matrices with the entries in the complex field.
Cylindrical Networks and Total Nonnegativity
We prove that an infinite block-Toeplitz matrix with finite diagonal support is totally nonnegative if and only if it is the weight matrix of a cylindrical network. This generalizes a well-known theorem of Brenti concerning finite totally nonnegative matrices and planar networks; in particular, our work gives an alternative, self-contained proof of the non-square case. Our argument employs Temperley-Lieb immanants, first introduced by Rhoades and Skandera, which are certain elements of Lusztig's dual canonical bases. As an application, we also obtain a new proof of a well-known theorem relating totally nonnegative block-Toeplitz matrices to interlacing polynomials.
Plücker inequalities for weakly separated coordinates in totally nonnegative Grassmannian
We show that the partial sums of the long Plücker relations for pairs of weakly separated Plücker coordinates oscillate around $0$ on the totally nonnegative part of the Grassmannian. Our result generalizes the classical oscillating inequalities by Gantmacher--Krein (1941) and recent results on totally nonnegative matrix inequalities by Fallat--Vishwakarma (2023). In fact we obtain a characterization of weak separability, by showing that no other pair of Plücker coordinates satisfies this property.
Weakly separated sets were initially introduced by Leclerc and Zelevinsky and are closely connected with the cluster algebra of the Grassmannian. Moreover, our work connects several fundamental objects such as weak separability, Temperley--Lieb immanants, and Plücker relations, and provides a very general and natural class of additive determinantal inequalities on the totally nonnegative part of the Grassmannian.

We introduce a generalization of immanants of matrices, using partition algebra characters in place of symmetric group characters. We prove that our immanant-like function on square matrices, which we refer to as the recombinant, agrees with the usual definition for immanants for the special case whereby the vacillating tableaux associated with the irreducible characters correspond, according to the Bratteli diagram for partition algebra representations, to the integer partition shapes for symmetric group characters. In contrast to previously studied variants and generalizations of immanants, as in Temperley-Lieb immanants and $f$-immanants, the sum that we use to define recombinants is indexed by a full set of partition diagrams, as opposed to permutations.

Let $T$ be a tree on $n$ vertices and let $L_q^T$ be the $q$-analogue of its Laplacian. For a partition $λ\vdash n$, let the normalized immanant of $L_q^T$ indexed by $λ$ be denoted as $d_λ(L_q^T)$. A string of inequalities among $d_λ(L_q^T)$ is known when $λ$ varies over hook partitions of $n$ as the size of the first part of $λ$ decreases. In this work, we show a similar sequence of inequalities when $λ$ varies over two row partitions of $n$ as the size of the first part of $λ$ decreases. Our main lemma is an identity involving binomial coefficients and irreducible character values of $S_n$ indexed by two row partitions. Our proof can be interpreted using the combinatorics of Riordan paths and our main lemma admits a nice probabilisitic interpretation involving peaks at odd heights in generalized Dyck paths or equivalently involving special descents in Standard Young Tableaux with two rows. As a corollary, we also get inequalities between $d_{λ_1}(L_q^{T_1})$ and $d_{λ_2}(L_q^{T_2})$ when $T_1$ and $T_2$ are comparable trees in the $GTS_n$ poset and when $λ_1$ and $λ_2$ are both two rowed partitions of $n$, with $λ_1$ having a larger first part than $λ_2$.

The classical Capelli identity is an important determinantal identity of a matrix with noncommutative entries that determines the center of the enveloping algebra of the general linear Lie algebra, and was used by Weyl as a main tool to study irreducible representations in his famous book on classical groups.
In 1996 Okounkov found higher Capelli identities involving immanants of the generating matrix of $U(gl(n))$ which correspond to arbitrary orthogonal idempotent of the symmetric group. It turns out that Williamson also discovered a general Capelli identity of immanants for $U(gl(n))$ in 1981. In this paper, we use a new method to derive a family of even more general Capelli identities that include the aforementioned Capelli identities as special cases as well as many other Capelli-type identities as corollaries. In particular, we obtain generalized Turnbull's identities for both symmetric and antisymmetric matrices, as well as the generalized Howe-Umeda-Kostant-Sahi identities for antisymmetric matrices which confirm the conjecture of Caracciolo, Sokal, and Sportiello.
Jack Derangements
For each integer partition $λ\vdash n$ we give a simple combinatorial expression for the sum of the Jack character $θ^λ_α$ over the integer partitions of $n$ with no singleton parts. For $α= 1,2$ this gives closed forms for the eigenvalues of the permutation and perfect matching derangement graphs, resolving an open question in algebraic graph theory. A byproduct of the latter is a simple combinatorial formula for the immanants of the matrix $J-I$ where $J$ is the all-ones matrix, which might be of independent interest. Our proofs center around a Jack analogue of a hook product related to Cayley's $Ω$--process in classical invariant theory, which we call the principal lower hook product.

We consider the Schur-positivity of monomial immanants of Jacobi-Trudi matrices, in particular whether a non-negative coefficient of the trivial Schur function implies non-negative coefficients for other Schur functions in said immanants. We prove that this true for hook-shape Schur functions using combinatorial methods in a representation theory setting. Our main theorem proves that hook-shape immanant characters can be written as finite non-negative integer sums of Stanley-Stembridge characters, and provides an explicit combinatorial formula for these sums. This resolves a special case of a longstanding conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge that posits such a sum exists for all immanant characters. We also provide several simplifications for computing immanant characters, and several corollaries applying the main result to cases where the coefficient of the trivial Schur function in monomial immanants of Jacobi-Trudi matrices is known to be non-negative.
%-Immanants and Temperley-Lieb Immanants
In this paper, we investigate the relationship between Temperley-Lieb immanants, which were introduced by Rhoades and Skandera, and %-immanants, an immanant based on a concept introduced by Chepuri and Sherman-Bennett. Our main result is a classification of when a Temperley-Lieb immanant can be written as a linear combination of %-immanants. This result uses a formula by Rhoades and Skandera to compute Temperley-Lieb immanants in terms of complementary minors. Using this formula, we also derive an explicit expression for the coefficients of a Temperley-Lieb immanant coming from a $321$-, $1324$-avoiding permutation $w$ containing the pattern $2143,$ which we use to derive our main result.

We introduce immanant varieties, associated to simple characters of a finite group. They include well-studied classes of varieties, as Segre embeddings, Grassmannians and certain other classes of Chow varieties. For a one-dimensional character $χ$, we define $χ$-matroids by a maximality property. For trivial characters, by exploring the combinatorics of incidence stratifications, we provide a set of generators for the Chow vector spaces of the corresponding immanant varieties.
Commutators in finite free probability, I
This paper describes the expected characteristic polynomial of the commutator of randomly rotated matrices, in the context of the finite free probability theory initiated by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava. The key technical features are the use of Weingarten calculus to translate the random matrix problem into one of combinatorial representation theory, followed by some applications of the Goulden-Jackson immanant formula and the classical theory of permutation modules.

To any element of a connected, simply connected, semisimple complex algebraic group G and a choice of an element of the corresponding Weyl group there is an associated Lusztig variety. When the element of G is regular semisimple, the corresponding variety carries an action of the Weyl group on its (equivariant) intersection cohomology. From this action, we recover the induced characters of an element of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of the corresponding Hecke algebra. In type A, we prove a more precise statement: that the Frobenius character of this action is precisely the symmetric function given by the characters of a Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element. The main idea is to find celular decompositions of desingularizations of these varieties and apply the Brosnan-Chow palindromicity criterion for determining when the local invariant cycle map is an isomorphism.
This recovers some results of Lusztig about character sheaves and gives a generalization of the Brosnan-Chow solution to the Sharesian-Wachs conjecture to non-codominant permutations, where singularities are involved. We also review the connections between Immanants, Hecke algebras, and Chromatic quasisymmetric functions of indifference graphs.

We show that Lusztig's canonical basis for the degree two part of the Grassmannian coordinate ring is given by SL(k) web diagrams. Equivalently, we show that every SL(2) web immanant of a plabic graph for Gr(k,n) is an SL(k) web invariant.

Cauchy's determinant formula (1841) involving $\det ((1-u_i v_j)^{-1})$ is a fundamental result in symmetric function theory. It has been extended in several directions, including a determinantal extension by Frobenius [J. reine angew. Math. 1882] involving a sum of two geometric series in $u_i v_j$. This theme also resurfaced in a matrix analysis setting in a paper by Horn [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 1969] - where the computations are attributed to Loewner - and in recent works by Belton-Guillot-Khare-Putinar [Adv. Math. 2016] and Khare-Tao [Amer. J. Math. 2021]. These formulas were recently unified and extended in [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 2022] to arbitrary power series, with commuting/bosonic variables $u_i, v_j$.
In this note we formulate analogous permanent identities, and in fact, explain how all of these results are a special case of a more general identity, for any character - in fact, any complex class function - of any finite group that acts on the bosonic variables $u_i$ and on the $v_j$ via signed permutations. (We explain why larger linear groups do not work, via a - perhaps novel - "symmetric function" characterization of signed permutation matrices that holds over any integral domain.) We then provide fermionic analogues of these formulas, as well as of the closely related Cauchy product identities.
Quantum immanants, double Young-Capelli bitableaux and Schur shifted symmetric functions

In this paper are introduced two classes of elements in the enveloping algebra $\mathbf{U}(gl(n))$: the \emph{double Young-Capelli bitableaux} $[\ \fbox{$S \ | \ T$}\ ]$ and the \emph{central} \emph{Schur elements} $\mathbf{S}_λ(n)$, that act in a remarkable way on the highest weight vectors of irreducible Schur modules.
Any element $\mathbf{S}_λ(n)$ is the sum of all double Young-Capelli bitableaux $[\ \fbox{$S \ | \ S$}\ ]$, $S$ row (strictly) increasing Young tableaux of shape $\widetildeλ$. The Schur elements $\mathbf{S}_λ(n)$ are proved to be the preimages - with respect to the Harish-Chandra isomorphism - of the \emph{shifted Schur polynomials} $s_{λ|n}^* \in Λ^*(n)$. Hence, the Schur elements are the same as the Okounkov \textit{quantum immanants}, recently described by the present authors as linear combinations of \emph{Capelli immanants}. This new presentation of Schur elements/quantum immanants doesn't involve the irreducible characters of symmetric groups. The Capelli elements $\mathbf{H}_k(n)$ are column Schur elements and the Nazarov-Umeda elements $\mathbf{I}_k(n)$ are row Schur elements. The duality in $\boldsymbolζ(n)$ follows from a combinatorial description of the eigenvalues of the $\mathbf{H}_k(n)$ on irreducible modules that is {\it{dual}} (in the sense of shapes/partitions) to the combinatorial description of the eigenvalues of the $\mathbf{I}_k(n)$.
The passage $n \rightarrow \infty$ for the algebras $\boldsymbolζ(n)$ is obtained both as direct and inverse limit in the category of filtered algebras, via the \emph{Olshanski decomposition/projection}.

In this paper we give some sufficient conditions for the nonnegativity of immanants of square submatrices of Catalan-Stieltjes matrices and their corresponding Hankel matrices. To obtain these sufficient conditions, we construct new planar networks with a recursive nature for Catalan-Stieltjes matrices. As applications, we provide a unified way to produce inequalities for many combinatorial polynomials, such as the Eulerian polynomials, Schröder polynomials and Narayana polynomials.

In this note, we show that certain dual canonical basis elements of $\mathbb{C}[SL_m]$ are positive when evaluated on $k$-positive matrices, matrices whose minors of size $k \times k$ and smaller are positive. Skandera showed that all dual canonical basis elements of $\mathbb{C}[SL_m]$ can be written in terms of Kazhdan-Lusztig immanants, which were introduced by Rhoades and Skandera. We focus on the basis elements which are expressed in terms of Kazhdan-Lusztig immanants indexed by 1324- and 2143-avoiding permutations. This extends previous work of the authors on Kazhdan-Lusztig immanants and uses similar tools, namely Lewis Carroll's identity (also known as the Desnanot-Jacobi identity).
Matrix forms of immanant inequalities
We translate inequalities and conjectures for immanants and generalized matrix functions into inequalities in the Löwner order. These have the form of trace polynomials and generalize the inequalities from [FH, J. Math. Phys. 62 (2021), 2, 022203].
