Posh Parking Spaces
Let $W$ be an irreducible complex reflection group with reflection representation $V$. A $W$-stable, faithful homogeneous system of parameters $Θ\subseteq \mathrm{Sym}(V^*)$ of common positive degree $p$ is called a posh hsop; $Θ$ carries a $W$-representation $U$ if $Θ\simeq U$ as ungraded $W$-modules. We classify the posh pairs $(p,U)$ for which a posh hsop of degree $p$ carrying $U$ exists. Every such $U$ is a Galois twist of $V^*$. Extending work of Ito and Okada, we deduce that the quotient $S/(Θ)$ is a permutation module for $W$ if and only if $U \simeq V^*$.

A flag refinement of the $ h^* $-formula for the hypersimplices
The hypersimplex $Δ_{k,n}$ is the convex hull of all 0/1-vectors of length $ n $ with coordinate sum $ k $. Early conjectured, and Kim proved, a combinatorial formula for the $ h^* $-polynomial of $Δ_{k,n}$ in terms of hypersimplicial decorated ordered set partitions. In this paper, we refine the Early--Kim formula to the flag $h$-numbers of the alcove triangulation of $\hyp$. We also give a representation-theoretic interpretation of its flag $f$-numbers in terms of Young permutation modules.

Permutation modules for Ramsey structures
Suppose $R$ is a commutative ring and $G$ is a group acting on a set $W$. We consider the $RG$-module $RW$ in the case where $G$ is the automorphism group of an $ω$-categorical structure $M$ and $W$ is, for example, $M^n$ (for $n \in \mathbb{N}$). We develop methods which may provide information about two questions in the case where $R$ is a field $F$: whether $FW$ has a.c.c. on submodules; and in the case where $M$ is finitely homogeneous, whether $FW$ is of finite composition length. In the case where $M$ is a Ramsey structure and so $G$ is extremely amenable, we give a simple `decision procedure' for membership in a submodule of $RW$ specified by a given generating set. If $F$ is a field, we show that there is a duality between submodules of $FW$ and the topological $FG$-module of definable functions from $W$ to $F$.
Linear dimension of group actions
Two fundamental ways to represent a group are as permutations and as matrices. In this paper, we study linear representations of groups that intertwine with a permutation representation. Recently, D'Alconzo and Di Scala investigated how small the matrices in such a linear representation can be. The minimal dimension of such a representation is the \emph{linear dimension of the group action} and this has applications in cryptography and cryptosystems. We develop the idea of linear dimension from an algebraic point of view by using the theory of permutation modules. We give structural results about representations of minimal dimension and investigate the implications of faithfulness, transitivity and primitivity on the linear dimension. Furthermore, we compute the linear dimension of several classes of finite primitive permutation groups. We also study wreath products, allowing us to determine the linear dimension of imprimitive group actions. Finally, we give the linear dimension of almost simple finite $2$-transitive groups, some of which may be used for further applications in cryptography. Our results also open up many new questions about linear representations of group actions.

Symmetric Ideals and Invariant Hilbert Schemes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A symmetric ideal is an ideal in a polynomial ring which is stable under all permutations of the variables. In this paper we initiate a global study of zero-dimensional symmetric ideals. By this we mean a geometric study of the invariant Hilbert schemes $\mathrm{Hilb}_ρ^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ parametrizing symmetric subschemes of $\mathbb{C}^n$ whose coordinate rings, as $S_n$-modules, are isomorphic to a given representation $ρ$. In the case that $ρ= M^λ$ is a permutation module corresponding to certain special types of partitions $λ$ of $n$, we prove that $\mathrm{Hilb}_ρ^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ is irreducible or even smooth. We also prove irreducibility whenever $\dim ρ\leq 2n$ and the invariant Hilbert scheme is non-empty. In this same range, we classify all homogeneous symmetric ideals and decide which of these define singular points of $\mathrm{Hilb}_ρ^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$. A central tool is the combinatorial theory of higher Specht polynomials.

Realization of permutation modules via Alexandroff spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
We raise the question of the realizability of permutation modules in the context of Kahn's realizability problem for abstract groups and the $G$-Moore space problem. Specifically, given a finite group $G$, we consider a collection $\{M_i\}_{i=1}^n$ of finitely generated $\Z G$-modules that admit a submodule decomposition on which $G$ acts by permuting the summands. Then we prove the existence of connected finite spaces $X$ that realize each $M_i$ as its $i$-th homology, $G$ as its group of self-homotopy equivalences $\E(X)$, and the action of $G$ on each $M_i$ as the action of $\E(X)$ on $H_i(X; \Z)$.

Commutators in finite free probability, I
This paper describes the expected characteristic polynomial of the commutator of randomly rotated matrices, in the context of the finite free probability theory initiated by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava. The key technical features are the use of Weingarten calculus to translate the random matrix problem into one of combinatorial representation theory, followed by some applications of the Goulden-Jackson immanant formula and the classical theory of permutation modules.

Oligomorphic groups and tensor categories
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given an oligomorphic group $G$ and a measure $μ$ for $G$ (in a sense that we introduce), we define a rigid tensor category $\underline{\mathrm{Perm}}(G; μ)$ of "permutation modules," and, in certain cases, an abelian envelope $\underline{\mathrm{Rep}}(G; μ)$ of this category. When $G$ is the infinite symmetric group, this recovers Deligne's interpolation category. Other choices for $G$ lead to fundamentally new tensor categories. For example, we construct the first known semi-simple pre-Tannakian categories in positive characteristic with super-exponential growth. One interesting aspect of our construction is that, unlike previous work in this direction, our categories are concrete: the objects are modules over a ring, and the tensor product receives a universal bi-linear map. Central to our constructions is a novel theory of integration on oligomorphic groups, which could be of more general interest. Classifying the measures on an oligomorphic group appears to be a difficult problem, which we solve in only a few cases.

Permutation module decomposition of the second cohomology of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety
Published • View Publication • BIB
Regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties admit actions of associated Weyl groups on their cohomology space of each degree. In this paper, we consider the module structure of the cohomology spaces of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties of type $A$. We define a subset of the Bialynicki-Birula basis of the cohomology space so that they become a module generator set of the cohomology module of each degree. We then use those generators to construct permutation submodules of the degree two cohomology module and show that they form a permutation module decomposition. Our construction is consistent with a known combinatorial result by Chow on chromatic quasisymmetric functions.

The Green polynomials via vertex operators
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 226 (2022), 107032, 17pp • View Publication • BIB
An iterative formula for the Green polynomial is given using the vertex operator realization of the Hall-Littlewood function. Based on this, (1) a general combinatorial formula of the Green polynomial is given; (2) several compact formulas are given for Green's polynomials associated with upper partitions of length $\leq 3$ and the diagonal lengths $\leq 3$; (3) a Murnaghan-Nakayama type formula for the Green polynomial is obtained; and (4) an iterative formula is derived for the bitrace of the finite general linear group $G$ and the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$ on the permutation module of $G$ by its Borel subgroup.

The Benson -- Symonds Invariant for Ordinary and Signed Permutation Modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
The signed permutation modules are a simultaneous generalization of the ordinary permutation modules and the twisted permutation modules of the symmetric group. In a recent paper Dave Benson and Peter Symonds defined a new invariant $γ_G(M)$ for a finite dimensional module $M$ of a finite group $G$ which attempts to quantify how close a module is to being projective. In this paper, we determine this invariant for all the signed permutation modules of the symmetric group using tools from representation theory and combinatorics.

$3$-setwise intersecting families of the symmetric group
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given two positive integers $n\geq 3$ and $t\leq n$, the permutations $σ,π\in \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ are $t$-setwise intersecting if they agree (setwise) on a $t$-subset of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. A family $\mathcal{F} \subset \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ is $t$-setwise intersecting if any two permutations of $\mathcal{F}$ are $t$-setwise intersecting. Ellis [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 119(4), 825--849, 2012] conjectured that if $t\leq n$ and $\mathcal{F} \subset \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ is a $t$-setwise intersecting family, then $|\mathcal{F}|\leq t!(n-t)!$ and equality holds only if $\mathcal{F}$ is a coset of a setwise stablizer of a $t$-subset of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. In this paper, we prove that if $n\geq 11$ and $\mathcal{F}$ is $3$-setwise intersecting, then $|\mathcal{F}|\leq 6(n-3)!$. Moreover, we prove that the characteristic vector of a $3$-setwise intersecting family of maximum size lies in the sum of the eigenspaces induced by the permutation module of $\operatorname{Sym}(n)$ acting on the $3$-subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$.

Bases of the equivariant cohomologies of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider bases for the cohomology space of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties, consisting of the classes that naturally arise from the Bialynicki-Birula decomposition of the Hessenberg varieties. We give an explicit combinatorial description of the support of each class, which enables us to compute the symmetric group actions on the classes in our bases. We then successfully apply the results to the permutohedral varieties to explicitly write down each class and to construct permutation submodules that constitute summands of a decomposition of cohomology space of each degree. This resolves the problem posed by Stembridge on the geometric construction of permutation module decomposition and also the conjecture posed by Chow on the construction of bases for the equivariant cohomology spaces of permutohedral varieties.

Irreducible representations of the symmetric groups from slash homologies of p-complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the 40s, Mayer introduced a construction of (simplicial) $p$-complex by using the unsigned boundary map and taking coefficients of chains modulo $p$. We look at such a $p$-complex associated to an $(n-1)$-simplex; in which case, this is also a $p$-complex of representations of the symmetric group of rank $n$ - specifically, of permutation modules associated to two-row compositions. In this article, we calculate the so-called slash homology - a homology theory introduced by Khovanov and Qi - of such a $p$-complex. We show that every non-trivial slash homology group appears as an irreducible representation associated to two-row partitions, and how this calculation leads to a basis of these irreducible representations given by the so-called $p$-standard tableaux.

Minimal Binary $2$-Neighbour-Transitive Codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
The main result here is a characterisation of binary $2$-neighbour-transitive codes with minimum distance at least $5$ via their minimal subcodes, which are found to be generated by certain designs. The motivation for studying this class of codes comes primarily from their relationship to the class of completely regular codes. The results contained here yield many more examples of $2$-neighbour-transitive codes than previous classification results of families of $2$-neighbour-transitive codes. In the process, new lower bounds on the minimum distance of particular sub-families are produced. Several results on the structure of $2$-neighbour-transitive codes with arbitrary alphabet size are also proved. The proofs of the main results apply the classification of minimal and pre-minimal submodules of the permutation modules over $\mathbb{F}_2$ for finite $2$-transitive permutation groups.

A projective two-weight code related to the simple group ${\rm Co}_1$ of Conway
Published in Graphs and Combin. volume 34 No. 3 (2018) 509-521 • View Publication • BIB
A binary $[98280, 24, 47104]_2$ projective two-weight code related to the sporadic simple group ${\rm Co}_1$ of Conway is constructed as a faithful and absolutely irreducible submodule of the permutation module induced by the primitive action of ${\rm Co}_1$ on the cosets of ${\rm Co}_2$. The dual code of this code is a uniformly packed $[98280, 98256,3]_2$ code. The geometric significance of the codewords of the code can be traced to the vectors in the Leech lattice, thus revealing that the stabilizer of any non-zero weight codeword in the code is a maximal subgroup of ${\rm Co}_1$. Similarly, the stabilizer of the codewords of minimum weight in the dual code is a maximal subgroup of ${\rm Co}_1$. As by-product, a new strongly regular graph on 16777216 vertices and valency 98280 is constructed using the codewords of the code.

Permutation Modules associated to the Hyperoctahedron and Group Actions
We investigate the permutation modules associated to the set of $k$-dimensional faces of the hyperoctahedron in dimension $n$, denoted $H^{n}.$ For any $k\leq n$ such a module can be defined over an arbitrary field $F$, it is called a face module of $H^{n}$ over $F.$ We describe a spectral decomposition of such face modules into submodules and show that these submodules are irreducible under the hyperoctahedral group $B_{n}.$ The same method can be used to describe the exact relationship between the face modules in any two dimensions $0\leq t\leq k\leq n.$ Applications of this technique include a rank formula for the rank of the incidence matrix of $t$-dimensional versus $k$-dimensional faces of $H^{n}$ and a characterization of $(t,k,\ell)$-designs on $H^{n}.$ We also prove an orbit theorem for subgroups of the hyperoctahedral group on the set of faces of $H^{n}.$ The decomposition method is elementary, mostly characteristic free and does not involve the representation theory of automorphism groups. It is therefore quite general and can be used to decompose permutation modules associated to other geometries.

On permutation characters and Sylow $p$-subgroups of $\mathfrak{S}_n$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $n$ be a natural number. In this article we determine the irreducible constituents of the permutation module induced by the action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the cosets of a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P_n$. As a consequence, we determine the number of irreducible representations of the corresponding Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}(\mathfrak{S}_n, P_n, 1_{P_n})$.

Partition Algebras and the Invariant Theory of the Symmetric Group
Published • View Publication • BIB
The symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$ and the partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ centralize one another in their actions on the $k$-fold tensor power $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ of the $n$-dimensional permutation module $\mathsf{M}_n$ of $\mathsf{S}_n$. The duality afforded by the commuting actions determines an algebra homomorphism $Φ_{k,n}: \mathsf{P}_k(n) \to \mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$ from the partition algebra to the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$, which is a surjection for all $k, n \in \mathbb{Z}_{\ge 1}$, and an isomorphism when $n \ge 2k$. We present results that can be derived from the duality between $\mathsf{S}_n$ and $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$; for example, (i) expressions for the multiplicities of the irreducible $\mathsf{S}_n$-summands of $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$, (ii) formulas for the dimensions of the irreducible modules for the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$, (iii) a bijection between vacillating tableaux and set-partition tableaux, (iv) identities relating Stirling numbers of the second kind and the number of fixed points of permutations, and (v) character values for the partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$. When $2k >n$, the map $Φ_{k,n}$ has a nontrivial kernel which is generated as a two-sided ideal by a single idempotent. We describe the kernel and image of $Φ_{k,n}$ in terms of the orbit basis of $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ and explain how the surjection $Φ_{k,n}$ can also be used to obtain the fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the symmetric group.
