Matchings and shape-Wilf-Equivalence of sets of patterns of length three I: Triples
Permutation pattern avoidance on Ferrers boards has become a central topic in enumerative combinatorics with important connections to matchings, set partitions, and other combinatorial structures as it allows one to build families of Wilf-equivalent patterns. While shape-Wilf-equivalence classes have been completely determined for individual patterns and pairs of patterns of length three, the corresponding classification for larger pattern sets has remained open. In this paper, we provide a complete classification of the shape-Wilf-equivalence classes of triples of patterns of length three. Our proofs use a bijective encoding of pattern avoiding transversals to establish all equivalence classes. As an application, we enumerate matchings avoiding triples of patterns of length three for all but two equivalence classes, extending previous results of Bloom and Elizalde. These enumerative results identify additional families of combinatorial objects counted by the Fuss-Catalan numbers and by other integer sequences appearing in the OEIS.
Ordinal and disjoint sums of partially ordered patterns
Partially ordered patterns (POPs) generalize the classical notion of permutation patterns within the framework of pattern avoidance. Building on recent work by Burstein, Han, Kitaev, and Zhang, which introduced the concept of shape-Wilf-equivalence of sets of patterns, we develop the notions of \emph{ordinal} and \emph{disjoint sums} of labeled posets. This framework enables us to reinterpret their main result as an ordinal sum analogue of the classical theorem by Backelin, West, and Xin. We establish analogous results for disjoint sums of POPs and further extend their results to prove Wilf-equivalence for classes of POPs that include isolated vertices. In particular, we prove the shape-Wilf-equivalence of the sets of patterns $\{123, 213, 312\}$ and $\{132, 231, 321\}$. Our proof strategy involves a bijection that filters through an encoding scheme for the transversals avoiding these patterns. We use these results to completely classify the partially ordered patterns of size $3,4,5$ whose connected components are all chains. This classification also confirms a conjecture posed by Dimitrov at the problem session of the British Combinatorics Conference 2024 (BCC30).
A descent-excedance correspondence in colored permutation groups
It is well known that descents and excedances are equidistributed in the symmetric group. We show that the descent and excedance enumerators, summed over permutations with a fixed first letter are identical when we perform a simple change of the first letter. We generalize this to type B and other colored permutation groups. We are led to defining descents and excedances through linear orders. With respect to a particular order, when the number of colors is even, we get a result that generalizes the type B results. Lastly, we get a type B counterpart of Conger's result which refines the well known Carlitz identity.
Unimodality and peak location of the characteristic polynomials of two distance matrices of trees
Unimodality of the normalized coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of distance matrices of trees are known and bounds on the location of its peak (the largest coefficient) are also known. Recently, an extension of these results to distance matrices of block graphs was given. In this work, we extend these results to two additional distance-type matrices associated with trees: the Min-4PC matrix and the 2-Steiner distance matrix. We show that the sequences of coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of these matrices are both unimodal and log-concave. Moreover, we find the peak location for the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of the Min-4PC matrix of any tree on $n$ vertices. Further, we show that the Min-4PC matrix of any tree on $n$ vertices is isometrically embeddable in $\mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ equipped with the $\ell_1$ norm.
Canonical reduced words and signed descent length enumeration in Coxeter groups
Reifegerste and independently, Petersen and Tenner studied a statistic $\mathrm{drops}()$ on permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Two other studied statistics on $\mathfrak{S}_n$ are $\mathrm{depth}$ and $\mathrm{exc}$. Using descents in ${\it canonical\ reduced\ words}$ of elements in $\mathfrak{S}_n$, we give an involution $f_A: \mathfrak{S}_n \mapsto \mathfrak{S}_n$ that leads to a neat formula for the signed trivariate enumerator of $\mathrm{drops},\mathrm{depth}, \mathrm{exc}$ in $\mathfrak{S}_n$. This gives a simple formula for the signed univariate drops enumerator in $\mathfrak{S}_n$. For the type-B Coxeter group $\mathfrak{B}_n$ as well, using similar techniques, we show analogous results. For the type D Coxeter group, we again get analogous results, but our proof is inductive. Under the famous Foata-Zeilberger bijection $φ_{FZ}$ which takes permutations to restricted Laguerre histories, we show that permutations $π$ and $f_A(π)$ map to the same Motzkin path, but have different history components. Using the Foata-Zeilberger bijection, we also get a continued fraction for the generating function enumerating the pair of statistics $\mathrm{drops}$ and $\mathrm{MAD}$. Graham and Diaconis determined the mean and the variance of the Spearman metric of disarray $D(π)$ when one samples $π$ from $\mathfrak{S}_n$ at random. As an application of our results, we get the mean and variance of the statistic $\mathrm{drops}(π)$ when we sample $π$ from $\mathcal{A}_n$ at random.
The maximum four point condition matrix of a tree
$\newcommand{\Max}{\mathrm{Max4PC}}$ The Four point condition (4PC henceforth) is a well known condition characterising distances in trees $T$. Let $w,x,y,z$ be four vertices in $T$ and let $d_{x,y}$ denote the distance between vertices $x,y$ in $T$. The 4PC condition says that among the three terms $d_{w,x} + d_{y,z}$, $d_{w,y} + d_{x,z}$ and $d_{w,z} + d_{x,y}$ the maximum value equals the second maximum value. We define an $\binom{n}{2} \times \binom{n}{2}$ sized matrix $\Max_T$ from a tree $T$ where the rows and columns are indexed by size-2 subsets. The entry of $\Max_T$ corresponding to the row indexed by $\{w,x\}$ and column $\{y,z\}$ is the maximum value among the three terms $d_{w,x} + d_{y,z}$, $d_{w,y} + d_{x,z}$ and $d_{w,z} + d_{x,y}$. In this work, we determine basic properties of this matrix like rank, give an algorithm that outputs a family of bases, and find the determinant of $\Max_T$ when restricted to our basis. We further determine the inertia and the Smith Normal Form (SNF) of $\Max_T$.
Inequalities among two rowed immanants of the $q$-Laplacian of Trees and Odd height peaks in generalized Dyck paths

Let $T$ be a tree on $n$ vertices and let $L_q^T$ be the $q$-analogue of its Laplacian. For a partition $λ\vdash n$, let the normalized immanant of $L_q^T$ indexed by $λ$ be denoted as $d_λ(L_q^T)$. A string of inequalities among $d_λ(L_q^T)$ is known when $λ$ varies over hook partitions of $n$ as the size of the first part of $λ$ decreases. In this work, we show a similar sequence of inequalities when $λ$ varies over two row partitions of $n$ as the size of the first part of $λ$ decreases. Our main lemma is an identity involving binomial coefficients and irreducible character values of $S_n$ indexed by two row partitions. Our proof can be interpreted using the combinatorics of Riordan paths and our main lemma admits a nice probabilisitic interpretation involving peaks at odd heights in generalized Dyck paths or equivalently involving special descents in Standard Young Tableaux with two rows. As a corollary, we also get inequalities between $d_{λ_1}(L_q^{T_1})$ and $d_{λ_2}(L_q^{T_2})$ when $T_1$ and $T_2$ are comparable trees in the $GTS_n$ poset and when $λ_1$ and $λ_2$ are both two rowed partitions of $n$, with $λ_1$ having a larger first part than $λ_2$.
$q$-enumeration of type B and D Eulerian polynomials based on parity of descents

Carlitz and Scoville in 1973 considered a four variable polynomial that enumerates permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ with respect to the parity of its descents and ascents. In recent work, Pan and Zeng proved a $q$-analogue of Carlitz-Scoville's generating function by enumerating permutations with the above four statistice along with the inversion number. Further, they also proved a type B analogue by enumerating signed permutations with respect to the parity of descents and ascents. In this work we prove a $q$-analogue of the type B result of Pan and Zeng by enumerating permutations in $\mathfrak{B}_n$ with the above four statistics and the type B inversion number. We also obtain a $q$-analogue of the generating function for the type B bivariate alternating descent polynomials. We consider a similar five-variable polynomial in the type D Coxeter groups as well and give their egf. Alternating descents for the type D groups were previously also defined by Remmel, but our definition is slightly different. As a by-product of our proofs, we get bivariate $q$-analogues of Hyatt's recurrences for the type B and type D Eulerian polynomials. Further corollaries of our results are some symmetry relations for these polynomials and $q$-analogues of generating functions for snakes of types B and D.
Signed Alternating-runs enumeration in Classical Weyl Groups

The alternating-runs polynomial enumerates alternating runs in the symmetric group. There are three formulae for the number of permutations, $R_{n,k}$ in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ with $k$ alternating runs, but all of them are complicated. We show that when enumerated with sign taken into account, one gets a {\it neat formula}. As a consequence, we get a near refinement of a result of Wilf on the exponent of $(1+t)$ when it divides the alternating-runs polynomial in the alternating group $\mathcal{A}_n$. Other applications include a moment-type identity and enumeration of alternating permutations in $\mathcal{A}_n$. Similar results are obtained for the type B and type D Coxeter groups.
On the Alternating runs polynomial in type B and D Coxeter Groups
Wilf showed that the the alternating runs polynomial $R_n(t)$ counting the number of permutations in the Symmetric group is divisible by $(1+t)^m$ where $m = \lfloor (n-2)/2 \rfloor$. Recently, Bóna gave a group action based proof. Type B and D analogues of Wilf's result are known. In this note, we extend Bóna's proof to prove the type B and D analogue.
Eulerian Central Limit Theorems and Carlitz identities in positive elements of Classical Weyl Groups

Central Limit Theorems are known for the Eulerian statistic "descent" (or "excedance") in the symmetric group $\SSS_n$. Recently, Fulman, Kim, Lee and Petersen gave a Central Limit Theorem for "descent" over the alternating group $\AAA_n$ and also gave a Carlitz identity in $\AAA_n$ using descents. In this paper, we give a Central Limit Theorem in $\AAA_n$ involving excedances. We extend these to the positive elements in type B and type D Coxeter groups. Boroweic and Młotkowski enumerated type B descents over $\DD_n$, the type D Coxeter group and gave similar results. We refine their results for both the positive and negative part of $\DD_n$. Our results are a consequence of signed enumeration over these subsets.
Generalized Matrix polynomials of Tree Laplacians indexed by Symmetric functions and the GTS poset

Let $T$ be a tree on $n$ vertices with $q$-Laplacian $L_T^q$ and Laplacian matrix $L_T$. Let $GTS_n$ be the generalized tree shift poset on the set of unlabelled trees on $n$ vertices. Inequalities are known between coefficients of the immanantal polynomial of $L_T$ (and $L_T^q$) as we go up the poset $GTS_n$. Using the Frobenius characteristic, this can be thought as a result involving the schur symmetric function $s_λ$. In this paper, we use an arbitrary symmetric function to define a {\it generalized matrix function} of an $n \times n$ matrix. When the symmetric function is the monomial and the forgotten symmetric function, we generalize such inequalities among coefficients of the generalized matrix polynomial of $L_T^q$ as we go up the $GTS_n$ poset.
Gamma positivity of the Excedance based Eulerian polynomial in positive elements of Classical Weyl Groups
The classical Eulerian polynomials $A_n(t)$ are known to be gamma positive. Define the positive Eulerian polynomial $\mathsf{AExc^{+}}_n(t)$ as the polynomial obtained when we sum excedances over the alternating group. We show that $\mathsf{AExc^{+}}_n(t)$ is gamma positive iff $n \geq 5$ and $n \equiv 1$ (mod 2). When $n \geq 4$, and $n \equiv 0$ (mod 2) we show that $\mathsf{AExc^{+}}_n(t)$ can be written as a sum of two gamma positive polynomials. Similar results are shown when we consider the positive type-D and type-D Eulerian polynomials. Finally, we show gamma positivity results when we sum excedances over derangements with positive and negative sign. Our main resuls is that the polynomial obtained by summing excedance over a conjugacy class indexed by $λ$ is gamma positive.
Gamma positivity of the Descent based Eulerian polynomial in positive elements of Classical Weyl Groups
The classical Eulerian polynomials $A_n(t)$ are known to be gamma positive. Define the positive Eulerian polynomial $A_n^+(t)$ as the polynomial obtained when we sum descents over the alternating group. We show that $A_n^+(t)$ is gamma positive iff $n \equiv 0,1$ (mod 4). When $n \equiv 2$ (mod 4) we show that $A_n^+(t)$ can be written as a sum of two gamma positive polynomials while if $n \equiv 3$ (mod 4), we show that $A_n^+(t)$ can be written as a sum of three gamma positive polynomials. Similar results are shown when we consider the positive type-D and type-D Eulerian polynomials.
Laplacian Immanantal polynomials and the GTS poset on Trees

Let $T$ be a tree on $n$ vertices with Laplacian $L_T$ and let $GTS_n$ be the generalized tree shift poset on the set of unlabelled trees on $n$ vertices. Inequalities are known for coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of $L_T$ as we go up the poset $GTS_n$. In this work, we generalize these inequalities to the $q$-Laplacian $L^q_T$ of $T$ and to the coefficients of all immanantal polynomials.

Interpreting the two variable Distance enumerator of the Shi hyperplane arrangement
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an interpretation of the coefficients of the two variable refinement $D_{\Sh_n}(q,t)$ of the distance enumerator of the Shi hyperplane arrangement $\Sh_n$ in $n$ dimensions. This two variable refinement was defined by Stanley \cite{stan-rota} for the general $r$-extended Shi hyperplane arrangements. We give an interpretation when $r=1$. We define three natural three-dimensional partitions of the number $(n+1)^{n-1}$. The first arises from parking functions of length $n$, the second from special posets on $n$ vertices defined by Athanasiadis and the third from spanning trees on $n+1$ vertices. We call the three partitions as the parking partition, the tree-poset partition and the spanning-tree partition respectively. We show that one of the parts of the parking partition is identical to the number of edge-labelled trees with label set $\{1,2,...,n\}$ on $n+1$ unlabelled vertices. We prove that the parking partition majorises the tree-poset partition and conjecture that the spanning-tree partition also majorises the tree-poset partition.

Spanning trees in complete uniform hypergraphs and a connection to extended r-Shi hyperplane arrangements
We give a Cayley type formula to count the number of spanning trees in the complete r-uniform hypergraph for all r >= 3. Similar to the bijection between spanning trees in complete graphs and Parking functions, we derive a bijection from spanning trees of the complete (r+1)-uniform hypergraph which arise from a fixed r-perfect matching and r-Parking functions. We observe a simple consequence of this bijection in terms of the number of regions of the extended Shi arrangement.
