Modular periodicity of the Euler up/down numbers at odd prime powers
Let $E_n$ denote the number of alternating permutations of $\{1,\dots,n\}$, equivalently characterized by $\sum_{n\ge0}E_nz^n/n!=\sec z+\tan z$. For every $q\ge1$, the sequence $(E_n\bmod q)_{n\ge0}$ is eventually periodic; let $d(q)$ and $s(q)$ denote its minimal eventual period and preperiod. For every odd prime $p$, Knuth and Buckholtz proved $d(p)=\operatorname{lcm}(p-1,4)$ together with \[ d(p^r)\mid p^{r-1}d(p), \qquad s(p^r)\le r, \] and Ramassamy conjectured that both bounds are attained for every $r\ge1$. In this paper, we introduce an algebraic frequency expansion for the Euler numbers over $S_r=(\mathbb Z/p^r\mathbb Z)[x]/(x^2+1)$. Using Hurwitz series, the Euler sequence is represented algebraically as a finite combination of formal exponential modes, in a manner reminiscent of Fourier analysis. Using this expansion, we prove \[ d(p^r)=p^{r-1}d(p) \qquad \text{for every odd prime $p$ and every $r\ge1$}, \] thereby establishing Ramassamy's period conjecture. We also disprove the preperiod conjecture by proving \[ s(5^5)\le4<5. \] Finally, we prove that $5^5$ is the smallest odd prime power for which $s(p^r)\ne r$, and based on our findings we conjecture \[ s(p^r)\ge r-2 \] for every odd prime $p$ and every $r\ge2$.

Bijective proofs of several conjectures on Jacobi permutations
Jacobi permutations, invented by Viennot in the context of the Jacobi elliptic functions, are counted by the Euler numbers. Recently, Henke, Hoffman, Stephens, Yuan, and Zhuang studied refined enumerations of Jacobi permutations and proposed three conjectures concerning the distribution of several statistics on Jacobi permutations. In this paper, we prove these conjectures by establishing explicit bijections involving increasing even trees, increasing binary trees, alternating permutations, and André permutations. One highlight of our results is a bijection between Jacobi permutations and André I permutations that transforms the pair of statistics $(\Ascbot, \last)$ to the pair of statistics $(\Desbot, \first)$. Here the statistic $\Ascbot$ (resp., $\Desbot$) denotes the set of ascent bottoms (resp., descent bottoms) of permutations, and the statistic $\first$ (resp., $\last$) denotes the first (resp., $\last$) letter of permutations. Furthermore, we investigate pairs of statistics on André permutations and simsun permutations that are equidistributed with the pair $(\asc, \last)$ on Jacobi permutations, where $\asc$ denotes the number of ascents of permutations. Finally, we obtain a closed-form formula for the trivariate exponential generating function of Jacobi permutations with respect to the number of ascents and the numbers of letters smaller and larger than the last letter.

Higher-Order Cyclotomic Congruences for $q$-Secant and Generalized $q$-Euler Numbers
Let $\A(2n)$ denote the set of up--down alternating permutations of $\{1,2,\ldots,2n\}$, and let \[ E_{2n}(q)=\sum_{σ\in\A(2n)}q^{\operatorname{inv}(σ)}. \] Andrews and Foata proved that $E_{2n}(q)\equiv q^{2n(n-1)}\pmod{(1+q)^2}$, and Liu recently obtained the cubic refinement \[ E_{2n}(q)\equiv q^{2n(n-1)}-\binom n2(1+q)^2 \pmod{(1+q)^3}. \] Using the reciprocal generating function for the $q$-secant numbers, a third-order expansion of Gaussian coefficients at $q=-1$, finite differences, and Newton interpolation, we prove the fourth-order refinement \[ E_{2n}(q)\equiv q^{2n(n-1)}-\binom n2(1+q)^2 +\binom n2(2n^2-2n-3)(1+q)^3 \pmod{(1+q)^4}. \] More generally, the recurrence yields an effective procedure for computing the expansion modulo $(1+q)^K$ for any prescribed $K$. We then apply the same local-expansion strategy to the generalized $q$-Euler numbers $E_{pn\mid p}(q)$ of Sagan and Zhang. For every prime $p$, we prove uniform congruences modulo $[p]_q^3$ and $[p]_q^4$; the fourth-order term is governed by a central $q$-Wolstenholme-type quotient associated with ${2p\brack p}_q$. Thus the fourth-order secant congruence is the first case of a general higher-cyclotomic method.
Classical and vincular patterns of length three in generalized alternating permutations
Let k be an integer at least 2, and let D_{N,k} be the set of permutations of {1,...,N} whose descent set is exactly {k, 2k, ..., k*floor((N-1)/k)}. We enumerate the elements of D_{N,k} avoiding each classical and each vincular pattern of length three. For classical patterns, we give recursive bijections from the 132- and 231-avoiding classes to ordered forests of complete k-ary trees, obtaining the Raney number. The 213- and 312-avoiding classes are obtained from these forest bijections by completing the last block and applying reverse-complement symmetry. The remaining classical case 321 is expressed by RSK. For vincular patterns, we enumerate the six fully consecutive patterns and the twelve patterns with exactly one adjacency. The closed-form results are accompanied by bijective models: the Catalan, Raney, Fuss-Catalan, and RSK cases are natural k-ary or fixed-descent extensions of classical bijections, while the product and poset cases arise from block-insertion and record/tree-poset encodings forced by the adjacency conditions.

Record compositions of alternating permutations and noncommutative symmetric functions
Amdeberhan, Shareshian, and Stanley recently proved that a function $\varphi$ arising in the theory of partition Eisenstein series counts the alternating permutations of $\{1,\dots,2n\}$ with a given `record' partition, and they asked whether there is a similar theory for record compositions, suggesting a role for noncommutative symmetric functions. Here we solve their open problem by showing that the number of alternating permutations of $\{1,\dots,2n\}$ with record composition $(α_1,\dots,α_\ell)$ is \[ \prod_{j=1}^{\ell}\binom{2s_j-1}{2α_j-1}E_{2α_j-1}, \] where $s_j=α_1+\dots+α_j$, $E_k$ is an Euler number, and the record composition of $w=a_1a_2\dots a_{2n}$ (so $a_1>a_2<a_3>\dotsb$) lists the factor lengths obtained by cutting $a_1a_3\dots a_{2n-1}$ before each left-to-right maximum other than the first. These numbers are the coefficients of a natural lift of the degree-$n$ sprout symmetric function with seed $\sec(\sqrt{t}\,)$ to noncommutative symmetric functions, expanded in products of noncommutative power sums of the first kind. An analogous refinement holds for every sprout sequence whose seed is given by the exponential formula. AxiomProver autonomously produced and verified the results in this paper in Lean.

An analytic derivation of a generating function for $k$-alternating permutations
We study the inversion enumerator of permutations whose descent set is fixed to be the set of multiples of a fixed integer $k \ge 2$. For each $n$, let $\mathfrak{S}_n^{(k)}$ denote the set of permutations of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ whose descent set is exactly $\{i : k \mid i\}$, and define the polynomial $$ a_n^{(k)}(q)=\sum_{σ\in \mathfrak{S}_n^{(k)}} q^{\mathrm{inv}(σ)}. $$ We prove that the associated $q$-exponential generating function $$ F_k(t;q)=\sum_{n\ge 0}\frac{t^n}{[n]_q!}\,a_n^{(k)}(q), $$ where $[n]_q!$ denotes the $q$-factorial, admits an explicit closed form as a ratio of two $k$-periodically truncated $q$-exponential series. The proof is purely analytic and is based on a functional equation satisfied by $F_k(t;q)$, obtained via a decomposition of the $q$-exponential series into residue classes modulo $k$. Coefficient extraction yields a convolution identity involving Gaussian binomial coefficients, which uniquely determines the inversion enumerator. This provides an analytic alternative to classical inclusion--exclusion and structural combinatorial arguments for permutation classes with periodic descent constraints.

Permanental Inequalities and Unit Interval Orders
Published in EPTCS 445, 2026, pp. 139-147 • View PublicationBIB
Given a square matrix, the permanent is a determinant-like function without signs. In this paper, we study inequalities involving permanents of certain submatrices. We first focus on a family of zero-one totally nonnegative matrices that arise as anti-adjacency matrices of unit interval orders. For these matrices, we prove a collection of inequalities comparing products of permanents of consecutive principal submatrices with products of permanents of parity-selected principal submatrices. We also study a related combinatorial problem involving two families of permutations: a Young subgroup and a set of parity alternating permutations. We construct a bijective map from the first family to the second family, and verify computationally for n at most 13 that each permutation is below its image in Bruhat order. We conjecture that this property holds for all n. If true, this would imply one of the main permanent inequalities for all totally nonnegative matrices in the balanced case. More broadly, we conjecture that the full family of inequalities holds for all totally nonnegative matrices.

Combinatorial interpretations of Tutte polynomials at the point $(2,-1)$
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph, and let $T_{G}(x,y)$ be the Tutte polynomial of $G$. Motivated by the works in \cite{Ma}, we, in this paper, introduce the even-left spanning forests of $G$ and odd $G$-partitionable permutations, and show that $T_{G}(2,-1)$ is equal to both the number of even-left spanning forests of $G$ and the number of odd $G$-partitionable permutations. In particular, for a complete graph $K_n$, we prove that $T_{K_{n}}(2,-1)$ is the number of alternating permutations on $\{1,2,\dots,n+1\}$, using two distinct techniques: a recurrence relation and an explicit bijection construction.
Sprout Symmetric Functions: Part 1
A \emph{sprout sequence} is a sequence $\frakr=(R_0=1,R_1,R_2,\dots)$ of symmetric functions in the variables $\bmx=(x_1,x_2,\dots)$ over a field $K$ generated from a power series $F(t)=1+a_1t+a_2t^2+\cdots$ by the rule $\sum_{n\geq 0}R_nt^n = \prod_{i\geq 1} F(x_it)$. The power series $F(t)$ is called the \emph{seed} of $\frakr$. This concept originated in the work of Littlewood and Richardson (though not with the name ``sprout sequence''), and numerous examples of sprout sequences have appeared in the literature. They are related to chromatic Tutte polynomials of complete graphs and complete hypergraphs, binomial posets, upper homogeneous (upho) posets, topological genera, etc. We first develop the basic theory of sprout sequences and then look at the special case $F(t)=\sec(\sqrt{t})$. We give five characterizations of sprout sequences and consider the expansion of sprout symmetric functions in terms of well-known symmetric function bases. The Schur positivity, elementary symmetric function positivity, and complete homogeneous symmetric function positivity of $R_n$ for all $n$ are completely characterized using the Edrei-Thoma theorem from the theory of total positivity. The seed $F(t)=\sec(\sqrt{t})$ is especially interesting. The expansion of $R_n$ in the power sum or monomial basis is related to alternating permutations. The Schur function expansion is related to standard Young skew tableaux. The expansion in terms of the complete symmetric functions has nonnegative integer coefficients, but we don't know a combinatorial interpretation. Finally we give a formula for $R_n$ as a sum of chromatic symmetric functions of interval orders.

Partition division maps, symmetric functions and positivity
We introduce a linear map on symmetric functions that 'divides' a partition by a positive integer $k$, sending a Schur function indexed by a partition of $kn$ to a symmetric function indexed by partitions of $n$. We prove that the image of this map is always Schur-positive, meaning it expands in the Schur basis with nonnegative integer coefficients. These coefficients are enumerated by a new family of combinatorial objects, called $k$-Yamanouchi tableaux, which generalize the classical ballot (Yamanouchi) tableaux appearing in the Littlewood-Richardson rule. We also obtain expansions in the power-sum basis and establish power-sum positivity. A further application establishes a connection to work of Tewodros Amdeberhan, John Shareshian, and Richard Stanley on alternating permutations and Euler numbers.

Mahonian statistics on words with fixed weak right-to-left minima and on permutations with a fixed descent set
Our first main result shows that, for words with a fixed multiset of weak right-to-left minima, the statistics within each of the following three classes are equidistributed: 1. Our second main result shows that, for permutations with a fixed descent set, the statistics within each of the following two classes are equidistributed: 1. Mahonian statistics: $\textsf{inv}$, $\textsf{imaj}$, $\textsf{imak}$, $\textsf{iinv}_{r}$, and $\textsf{istat}$; 2. Mahonian--Stirling-type statistics: $(\textsf{inv},\textsf{lrmax})$, $(\textsf{imaj},\textsf{lrmax})$, $(\textsf{imak},\textsf{lrmax})$, and $(\textsf{iinv}_{r},\textsf{lrmax})$. Moreover, we apply these results to set partitions, 221-avoiding words, alternating permutations, and permutations with $k$ alternating runs, thereby obtaining several families of equidistributed Mahonian-type statistics on these combinatorial structures.

Eulerian polynomials and the alternating sum of excedances
Tangent numbers $T_{2n-1}$, which enumerate alternating permutations of odd length, play a prominent role in the Taylor series expansion of the tangent function $\tan(x)$. In this work, we adopt a combinatorial approach based on the excedance statistic of permutations, which allows us to interpret the coefficients of the tangent series in a structural and enumerative way. Using this framework, we establish a classical identity that relates the alternating sum of excedances to the hyperbolic tangent function. This perspective highlights deep connections with Eulerian polynomials, provides a combinatorial interpretation of tangent numbers, and links these sequences to Genocchi numbers and related arithmetic properties. The approach not only unifies analytic and combinatorial viewpoints but also opens the way to generalizations to other permutation statistics and families of specialized permutations.

Integral and arithmetic structures of alternating (zigzag) numbers $A_n$
The alternating (zigzag) numbers $A_n$, counting the ascending alternating permutations of $\left\{1,\cdots,n\right\}$ and defined by the exponential generating function $\tan x+\sec x$, admit several classical combinatorial and analytic representations. In this work we unify and extend three complementary structures of $A_n$. First, starting from the Stirling number expansion of zigzag numbers, we derive a contour integral representation, as well as a positive Laplace-type integral representation $$ A_n = 2^n \int_0^\infty e^{-y} f_n(y)\, dy, \qquad f_n(y) := \sum_{k=0}^{n} (-1)^k S(n,k) \left(\frac{y}{2}\right)^k, $$ where the kernel $f_n(y)$ is the polynomial generating function of Stirling numbers. A continuous interpolation of the discrete product (falling factorial) is introduced subsequently. This provides a direct analytic bridge between set partitions and Laplace asymptotics. Second, using the partial fraction expansion of $\tan$, we obtain the well-known hyperbolic integral representation $$ A_{2n+1}=\frac{1}π\int_0^\infty\frac{y^{2n+1}}{\sinh(y/2)}\,dy, $$ equivalently expressed in classical $\cosh$ form for $A_{2n}$. This representation interprets zigzag numbers as spectral moments associated with half-integer poles. The connection with Fourier analysis and Mellin transforms is also outlined. Finally, combining spectral expansions with Stirling identities, we derive congruence relations modulo primes for $A_n$. These results exhibit a dual analytic-combinatorial structure of zigzag numbers, linking partition expansions, trigonometric spectra, and arithmetic properties.

A combinatorial proof of Jacobi's elliptic identity via alternating permutations
We provide a unified combinatorial framework connecting Entringer numbers, Dumont-Viennot snakes, and elliptically weighted continued fractions, which gives a structural interpretation of the Jacobi elliptic identity \begin{equation} \mathrm{sn}'(u)=\mathrm{cn}(u)\,\mathrm{dn}(u), \end{equation} where $\mathrm{sn}$, $\mathrm{cn}$ and $\mathrm{dn}$ are the Jacobi elliptic functions. This framework allows the decomposition of weighted snakes corresponding to the derivative of $\mathrm{sn}$ into canonical $\mathrm{cn}$- and $\mathrm{dn}$-components, bridging classical combinatorics and elliptic function theory.

Increasing Trees and the Degree-Chromatic Polynomial
Published in Kazakh Mathematical Journal 25(4) (2025) 57-66 • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies increasing trees on $n$ labeled vertices, in which labels increase from the root to the leaves. It is known that the number of binary increasing trees coincides with the number of alternating permutations (Euler numbers). Riordan obtained explicit formulas for the numbers of ternary and quaternary trees. This article derives a general formula for the number of $m\text{-ary}$ increasing trees for any $m$. The main result is expressed in terms of the degree-chromatic polynomial of the complete graph and Bell polynomials. It is shown how the corresponding generating function is related to the inversion problem and how combinatorial methods, including the lemma on coefficients of the multiplicative inverse function and the Lagrange inversion formula, can be used to compute the coefficients. A connection is also established between the values of the degree-chromatic polynomial at $λ=-1$ and the numbers of special permutations studied by Gessel.

Two $t$-analogues of the tree inversion enumerator
In this note, we introduce two $t$-analogues $I_n(q,t)$ and $\widetilde{I}_n(q,t)$ of the tree inversion enumerator $I_n(q)$. Although similar, $I_n(q,t)$ and $\widetilde{I}_n(q,t)$ are different. But they both seem to have interesting properties. In particular, we conjecture that their $q=-1$ specializations give two different, natural refinements of the zigzag numbers counting alternating permutations.

Order polytopes of crown posets
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Vol. 133, Mar. 2026, P. 104304 • View PublicationBIB
In the last decade, the order polytope of the zigzag poset has been thoroughly studied. A related poset, called \emph{crown poset}, obtained by adding an extra relation between the endpoints of an even zigzag poset, is not so well understood. In this paper, we study the order polytopes of crown posets. We provide explicit formulas for their $f$-vectors. We provide recursive formulas for their Ehrhart polynomial, giving a counterpart to formulas found in the zigzag case by Petersen--Zhuang (2025). We use these formulas to simplify a computation by Ferroni--Morales--Panova (2025) of the linear term of the order polynomial of these posets. Furthermore, we provide a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the $h^*$-polynomial in terms of the cyclic swap statistic on cyclically alternating permutations, which provides a circular version of a result by Coons--Sullivant (2023).

Counting alternating permutations with restricted prefix and suffix
In this paper, we use Hasse diagrams and generating functions to count alternating permutations with restricted prefix and suffix of lengths 3 and 4. In other words, for an alternating permutation $σ=σ_1σ_2σ_3\cdotsσ_{n}\in S_{n}$, we restrict length-3 prefixes $σ_1σ_2σ_3$ to follow certain patterns, such as $231$ and $132$, or follow certain restrictions such as $σ_2 \geq \max\{σ_1,σ_3\}+2$, similarly for prefixes of length 4. We also study the enumeration of alternating permutations with restrictions on both prefix and suffix.

Cohomology of type $B$ real permutohedral varieties
Type $A$ and type $B$ permutohedral varieties are classic examples of mathematics, and their topological invariants are well known. This naturally leads to the investigation of the topology of their real loci, known as type $A$ and type $B$ real permutohedral varieties. The rational cohomology rings of type $A$ real permutohedral varieties are fully described in terms of alternating permutations. Until now, only rational Betti numbers of type $B$ real permutohedral varieties have been described in terms of $B$-snakes. In this paper, we explicitly describe the multiplicative structure of the cohomology rings of type $B$ real permutohedral varieties in terms of $B$-snakes.
Bijections around Springer numbers
Arnol'd proved in 1992 that Springer numbers enumerate the Snakes, which are type $B$ analogs of alternating permutations. Chen, Fan and Jia in 2011 introduced the labeled ballot paths and established a ``hard'' bijection with snakes. Callan conjectured in 2012 and Han--Kitaev--Zhang proved recently that rc-invariant alternating permutations are counted by Springer numbers. Very recently, Chen--Fang--Kitaev--Zhang investigated multi-dimensional permutations and proved that weakly increasing $3$-dimensional permutations are also counted by Springer numbers. In this work, we construct a sequence of ``natural'' bijections linking the above four combinatorial objects.
