Coxeter Descents and Parabolic Homotopy Colimits: A Hochster-type decomposition and integral Morse reduction
Let $(W,S)$ be a finite Coxeter system and let $\mathcal K\subseteq 2^S$ be a simplicial complex. We define a parabolic bar complex ${\mathcal B}_{\mathcal K}(W)$ and prove a decomposition indexed by $w\in W$ in which the $w$-summand is a relative order-complex chain complex determined by the right descent set ${\operatorname{Des}_{R}}(w)$. An explicit integral Morse reduction identifies this summand, up to the Schubert shift $2\ell(w)+1$, with the augmented chains of the induced subcomplex $\mathcal K_{{\operatorname{Des}_{R}}(w)}$. For Weyl groups the complex is the cellular chain complex of \[ {X_{\mathcal K}}(G)={\operatorname*{hocolim}}_{I\in\mathcal K} G/G_I, \] so its homology is a descent-weighted Hochster decomposition. We prove functoriality and a homotopy-detection theorem for inclusions of indexing complexes, an Alexander-duality symmetry for generalized homology spheres, and, for simple $G$, a rigidity theorem characterizing the boundary simplex among the homology-sphere members of the family. For $G=(SU(2))^r$ the construction agrees up to homotopy with $(D^3,S^2)^{\mathcal K}$, and matroid independence complexes give a Tutte-polynomial specialization. The boundary-simplex case recovers the two-generator integral Morse model of the unit adjoint sphere.
Classical and vincular patterns of length three in generalized alternating permutations
Let k be an integer at least 2, and let D_{N,k} be the set of permutations of {1,...,N} whose descent set is exactly {k, 2k, ..., k*floor((N-1)/k)}. We enumerate the elements of D_{N,k} avoiding each classical and each vincular pattern of length three. For classical patterns, we give recursive bijections from the 132- and 231-avoiding classes to ordered forests of complete k-ary trees, obtaining the Raney number. The 213- and 312-avoiding classes are obtained from these forest bijections by completing the last block and applying reverse-complement symmetry. The remaining classical case 321 is expressed by RSK. For vincular patterns, we enumerate the six fully consecutive patterns and the twelve patterns with exactly one adjacency. The closed-form results are accompanied by bijective models: the Catalan, Raney, Fuss-Catalan, and RSK cases are natural k-ary or fixed-descent extensions of classical bijections, while the product and poset cases arise from block-insertion and record/tree-poset encodings forced by the adjacency conditions.

An analytic derivation of a generating function for $k$-alternating permutations
We study the inversion enumerator of permutations whose descent set is fixed to be the set of multiples of a fixed integer $k \ge 2$. For each $n$, let $\mathfrak{S}_n^{(k)}$ denote the set of permutations of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ whose descent set is exactly $\{i : k \mid i\}$, and define the polynomial $$ a_n^{(k)}(q)=\sum_{σ\in \mathfrak{S}_n^{(k)}} q^{\mathrm{inv}(σ)}. $$ We prove that the associated $q$-exponential generating function $$ F_k(t;q)=\sum_{n\ge 0}\frac{t^n}{[n]_q!}\,a_n^{(k)}(q), $$ where $[n]_q!$ denotes the $q$-factorial, admits an explicit closed form as a ratio of two $k$-periodically truncated $q$-exponential series. The proof is purely analytic and is based on a functional equation satisfied by $F_k(t;q)$, obtained via a decomposition of the $q$-exponential series into residue classes modulo $k$. Coefficient extraction yields a convolution identity involving Gaussian binomial coefficients, which uniquely determines the inversion enumerator. This provides an analytic alternative to classical inclusion--exclusion and structural combinatorial arguments for permutation classes with periodic descent constraints.

Touchard-Riordan Polynomials and Schur-positivity of Set Partitions
Published in EPTCS 445, 2026, pp. 1-9 • View PublicationBIB
A symmetric function is called Schur-positive if it admits an expansion in the Schur basis with nonnegative coefficients. In this paper, we study the Schur-positivity of symmetric functions naturally associated with set partitions, with respect to a descent set function that considers i as descent, if i and i+1 share a block in the partition. The Schur expansion involves hook-shaped Young diagrams, and the corresponding coefficients are given by Touchard-Riordan polynomials, which enumerate matchings by their number of crossings.

Weak Order on the MacNeille Completion of Bruhat Order
Let $\mathrm{Mac}(W)$ be the MacNeille completion of the Bruhat order of a Coxeter group $W$. We introduce an action of the $0$-Hecke monoid of type $W$ on $\mathrm{Mac}(W)$, which allows us to define a weak order and a descent set statistic on $\mathrm{Mac}(W)$. When $W$ is of type $A$, we recover constructions of Hamaker and Reiner, which were originally formulated in terms of monotone triangles and alternating sign matrices. Using this action, we prove that certain unions of Knutson--Miller subword complexes are vertex-decomposable. By specializing to type $A$, we prove a conjecture of Escobar, Klein, and Weigandt regarding Cohen--Macaulay ASM varieties. Along the way, we also exhibit a counterexample to a conjecture of Hamaker and Reiner regarding the poset topology of intervals in the ASM weak order. Finally, when $W$ is finite and irreducible, we use our $0$-Hecke action to introduce a noninvertible dynamical system on $\mathrm{Mac}(W)$ that we call the MacNeille pop-stack operator, and we prove that the maximum number of iterations of this operator needed to reach the bottom state is $h-1$, where $h$ is the Coxeter number of $W$. This article is meant to serve as a case study in using large language models to automate the workflow of mathematical research. The proof of the conjecture of Escobar--Klein--Weigandt and the disproof of the conjecture of Hamaker--Reiner were obtained autonomously by ChatGPT 5.4 Pro. Other aspects of the paper were obtained mostly by the author, but ChatGPT expedited the process. We provide a detailed account of this interaction, and we speculate on what allowed the model to be successful.

Mahonian statistics on words with fixed weak right-to-left minima and on permutations with a fixed descent set
Our first main result shows that, for words with a fixed multiset of weak right-to-left minima, the statistics within each of the following three classes are equidistributed: 1. Our second main result shows that, for permutations with a fixed descent set, the statistics within each of the following two classes are equidistributed: 1. Mahonian statistics: $\textsf{inv}$, $\textsf{imaj}$, $\textsf{imak}$, $\textsf{iinv}_{r}$, and $\textsf{istat}$; 2. Mahonian--Stirling-type statistics: $(\textsf{inv},\textsf{lrmax})$, $(\textsf{imaj},\textsf{lrmax})$, $(\textsf{imak},\textsf{lrmax})$, and $(\textsf{iinv}_{r},\textsf{lrmax})$. Moreover, we apply these results to set partitions, 221-avoiding words, alternating permutations, and permutations with $k$ alternating runs, thereby obtaining several families of equidistributed Mahonian-type statistics on these combinatorial structures.

Annexes in affine Coxeter complexes
We introduce the annex of an element $x$ in a Coxeter group as the set of elements $y$ such that $x \nleq y$ with respect to Bruhat order. This notion provides a complementary perspective to the study of Bruhat intervals and their interpretation via folded galleries. We establish general properties of annexes and show that in affine Coxeter groups the annex of any fixed element is finite. In rank-two affine Coxeter complexes, we further describe the geometric structure of annex boundaries using descent sets and configurations of parallel reflections. These results offer a new geometric viewpoint on the structure of the Bruhat order.

Descent-restricted subsequences via RSK and evacuation
The length $\mathsf{is}(π)$ of a longest increasing subsequence in a permutation $π$ has been extensively studied. An increasing subsequence is one that has no descents. We study generalizations of this statistic by finding longest subsequences with other descent restrictions. We first consider the statistic which encodes the longest length of a subsequence with a given number of descents. We then generalize this to restrict the descent set of the subsequence. Extending the classical result for $\mathsf{is}(π)$, we show how these statistics can be obtained using the RSK correspondence and the Schützenberger involution. In particular, these statistics only depend on the recording tableau of the permutation.

On symmetric pattern avoidance sets
For a set of permutations $S\subseteq S_n$, consider the quasisymmetric generating function $$Q(S): = \sum_{w\in S}F_{n, \mathrm{Des}(w)},$$ where $\mathrm{Des}(w) := \{i\mid w(i)> w(i+1)\}$ is the descent set of $w$ and $F_{n, \mathrm{Des}(w)}$ is Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric function. A set of permutations is said to be symmetric (respectively, Schur-positive) if its quasisymmetric generating function is symmetric (respectively, Schur-positive). Given a set $Π$ of permutations, let $S_n(Π)$ denote the set of permutations in $S_n$ that avoid all patterns in $Π.$ A set $Π$ is said to be symmetrically avoided (respectively, Schur-positively avoided) if $S_n(Π)$ is symmetric (respectively, Schur-positive) for all $n.$ Marmor proved in 2025 that for $n\ge 5$, a symmetric set $S\subseteq S_n$ has size at least $n-1$ unless $S\subseteq \{12\cdots n, n\cdots 21\}$ and asked for a general classification of the possible sizes of symmetric sets not containing the monotone elements $12\cdots n $ and $n\cdots 21$. We give a complete answer to this question for $n\ge 52.$ We also give a classification of symmetric sets of size at most $n-1$, thereby showing that they are actually Schur-positive, resolving a conjecture of Marmor. Finally, we give a classification of symmetrically avoided sets of size at most $n-1$, thereby showing that they are actually Schur-positively avoided.

Restricted inversion polynomials
For a finite subset $I$ of positive integers, the descent polynomial $\mathcal{D}(I;n)$ counts the number of permutations in $S_n$ that have descent set $I$. We generalize descent polynomials by considering permutations with a specific subset $S$ of common inversions called $\mathbf{h}$-inversions, where $\mathbf{h} = (\mathbf{h}(1), \mathbf{h}(2), \ldots )$ is a weakly increasing sequence of positive integers such that $\mathbf{h}(i)> i$. We prove that this more general count, denoted by $\mathcal{I}_\mathbf{h}(S;n)$, is also a polynomial. We give three explicit expansions for $\mathcal{I}_\mathbf{h}(S;n)$, prove the coefficients for two of these expansions are log-concave, and define a graded generalization.
Chow classes of matroids and standard Young tableaux
We study the Chow classes of arbitrary matroids in the Grassmannian. We develop a new combinatorial approach for computing them, by first focusing on snake matroids and then extending our results via valuativity to any matroid. Our main contribution identifies the Poincaré dual of the Chow class of a snake matroid with a specific ribbon Schur function, providing an explicit formula for its coefficients in the Schubert basis as the number of standard Young tableaux of a given shape with a prescribed descent set. This agrees with a formula by Klyachko for the uniform matroid. As consequences, we recover and simplify classical results such as Gessel and Viennot's enumeration of permutations with fixed descent sets, and formulas for the volume of lattice path matroids. Furthermore, we demonstrate the power of our findings by proving that certain Schubert coefficients are positive for all connected paving matroids.

Substring compatibility of permutation statistics
A permutation statistic is substring-compatible if its value on a permutation determines its value on every substring of that permutation. We construct the substring coalgebra of such a statistic, an analog of the shuffle algebra of a shuffle-compatible statistic introduced by Gessel and Zhuang. Furthermore, we show that for substring-compatible statistics that also satisfy a weak form of shuffle compatibility, the shuffle algebra and substring coalgebra can be combined to yield a Hopf algebra. Finally, we conjecture that the only nontrivial permutation statistics that are both shuffle-compatible and substring-compatible are the descent set, the peak set, and the valley set, and we describe our progress towards proving this conjecture.

Descent sets of cyclic permutations in types B and D
Elizalde constructed a bijection $φ$ from the cyclic permutations $π\in S_{n+1}$ to the symmetric group $S_n$ satisfying $\operatorname{Des}(π)\cap \{1,2,\ldots,n-1\}=\operatorname{Des}(φ(π))$. We give a corresponding result on the signed symmetric group $B_n$ by constructing a function $Φ$ from the cyclic signed permutations $π\in B_{n+1}$ to $B_n$ satisfying $\operatorname{Des}(π)\cap \{0,1,\ldots,n-1\}=\operatorname{Des}(Φ(π))$. Moreover, letting $D_{n+1}\subseteq B_{n+1}$ be the subgroup consisting of signed permutations with an even number of sign changes, we show that the restriction of $Φ$ to the cyclic signed permutations in $D_{n+1}$ or its complement is a bijection. Our function $Φ$ reduces to Elizalde's original bijection $φ$ under the natural identification of the symmetric groups as subgroups of the signed symmetric groups. One application of our results is asymptotic normality of the descent and flag major index statistics on the cyclic signed permutations in $B_{n}$ and $D_n$.

Metrics on Permutation Families Defined by a Restriction Graph
Understanding the metric structure of permutation families is fundamental to combinatorics and has applications in social choice theory, bioinformatics, and coding theory. We study permutation families defined by restriction graphs--oriented graphs that constrain the relative order of elements in valid permutations. For any restriction graph $G$, we determine the maximum distance achievable by two permutations under the $\ell_\infty$-metric and provide an explicit algorithm that constructs optimal permutation pairs. Our main contribution characterizes when the Kendall-Tau metric achieves its combinatorial upper bound: this occurs if and only if the poset induced by $G$ has dimension at most 2. When this condition holds, the extremal permutations form a minimal realizer of the poset, revealing a deep connection between metric geometry and poset dimension theory. We apply these results to classical permutation statistics including descent sets and Hessenberg varieties, obtaining explicit formulas and efficient algorithms for computing metric diameters.

A bijection for descent sets of permutations with only even and only odd cycles
It is known that, when $n$ is even, the number of permutations of $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ all of whose cycles have odd length equals the number of those all of whose cycles have even length. Adin, Hegedűs and Roichman recently found a surprising refinement of this identity. They showed that, for any fixed set $J$, the equality still holds when restricting to permutations with descent set $J$ on one side, and permutations with ascent set $J$ on the other. Their proof uses generating functions for higher Lie characters, and it also yields a version for odd $n$. Here we give a bijective proof of their result. We first use known bijections, due to Gessel, Reutenauer and others, to restate the identity in terms of multisets of necklaces, which we interpret as words, and then describe a new weight-preserving bijection between words all of whose Lyndon factors have odd length and are distinct, and words all of whose Lyndon factors have even length. We also show that the corresponding equality about Lyndon factorizations has a short proof using generating functions.

Descent set distribution for permutations with cycles of only odd or only even lengths
It is known that the number of permutations in the symmetric group $S_{2n}$ with cycles of odd lengths only is equal to the number of permutations with cycles of even lengths only. We prove a refinement of this equality, involving descent sets: the number of permutations in $S_{2n}$ with a prescribed descent set and all cycles of odd lengths is equal to the number of permutations with the complementary descent set and all cycles of even lengths. There is also a variant for $S_{2n+1}$. The proof uses generating functions for character values and applies a new identity on higher Lie characters.

Growth Rates Of Permutations With Given Descent Or Peak Set
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2025 • Search Publication
Given a set $I \subseteq \mathbb{N}$, consider the sequences $\{d_n(I)\},\{p_n(I)\}$ where for any $n$, $d_n(I)$ and $p_n(I)$ respectively count the number of permutations in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ whose descent set (respectively peak set) is $I \cap [n-1]$. We investigate the growth rates $\text{gr} \ d_n(I) = \lim_{n \to \infty} \left(d_n(I)/n!\right)^{1/n}$ and $\text{gr} \ p_n(I) = \lim_{n \to \infty} \left(p_n(I)/n!\right)^{1/n}$ over all $I \subseteq \mathbb{N}$. Our main contributions are two-fold. Firstly, we prove that the numbers $\text{gr} \ d_n(I)$ over all $I \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ are exactly the interval $\left[0,2/π\right]$. To do so, we construct an algorithm that explicitly builds $I$ for any desired limit $L$ in the interval. Secondly, we prove that the numbers $\text{gr} \ p_n(I)$ for periodic sets $I \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ form a dense set in $\left[0,1/\sqrt[3]{3}\right]$. We do this by explicitly finding, for any prescribed $L$ in the interval, a set $I$ whose corresponding growth rate is arbitrarily close to $L$.
Metrics on permutations with the same descent set
Let $S_n$ be the symmetric group on the set $[n]:=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Given a permutation $σ=σ_1σ_2 \cdots σ_n \in S_n$, we say it has a descent at index $i$ if $σ_i>σ_{i+1}$. Let $\mathcal{D}(σ)$ be the set of all descents of $σ$ and define $\mathcal{D}(S;n)=\{σ\in S_n\, | \,\mathcal{D}(σ)=S\}$. We study the Hamming metric and $\ell_\infty$-metric on the sets $\mathcal{D}(S;n)$ for all possible nonempty $S\subset[n-1]$ to determine the maximum possible value that these metrics can achieve when restricted to these subsets.

Permutations with a Given X-Descent Set
Building on the work of Grinberg and Stanley, we begin a systematic study of permutations with a prescribed $X$-descent set. In particular, for a set $X \subseteq \mathbb{N}^2$, and $I \subseteq [n-1]$, we study the permutations $π\in \mathfrak{S}_n$ whose $X$-descent set is precisely $I$, meaning $(π_i,π_{i+1}) \in X$ precisely when $i \in I$. The central focus is enumerating these permutations for a fixed $X,I$ and $n$: this count is denoted by $d_X(I;n)$. We derive a recursion which under expected conditions simplifies to a binomial-type recurrence determined entirely by the values $d_X(\emptyset;n)$. This extends the work of Díaz-Lopez et al.\ on descent polynomials. The resulting reduction shows that the general statistic $d_X(I;n)$ is typically governed by the ``descent-free'' quantities $d_X(\emptyset;n)$, motivating a closer analysis of these numbers. We observe that $d_X(\emptyset;n)$ enumerates Hamiltonian paths in a directed graph canonically associated to $X$. We then record several families of sets $X$ for which $d_X(\emptyset;n)$ is explicit or effectively computable. This includes families with periodicity for which transfer matrix methods apply, and families with succession-type relations where inclusion-exclusion applies. We then investigate the typical behavior of $d_X(\emptyset;n)$ from a probabilistic perspective.

The Redei-Berge Hopf algebra of digraphs
In a series of recent talks Richard Stanley introduced a symmetric function associated to digraphs called the Redei-Berge symmetric function. This symmetric function enumerates descent sets of permutations corresponding to digraphs. We show that such constructed symmetric function arises from a suitable structure of combinatorial Hopf algebra on digraphs. The induced Redei-Berge polynomial satisfies the deletion-contraction property which makes it similar to the chromatic polynomial. The Berge's classical result on the number of Hamiltonian paths in digraphs is a consequence of the reciprocity formula for the Redei-Berge polynomial.
