Descent representations and colored quasisymmetric functions
The quasisymmetric generating function of the set of permutations whose inverses have a fixed descent set is known to be symmetric and Schur-positive. The corresponding representation of the symmetric group is called the descent representation. In this paper, we provide an extension of this result to colored permutation groups, where Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions are replaced by Poirier's colored quasisymmetric functions. For this purpose, we introduce a colored analogue of zigzag shapes and prove that the representations associated with these shapes coincide with colored descent representations studied by Adin, Brenti and Roichman in the case of two colors and Bagno and Biagioli in the general case. Additionally, we provide a colored analogue of MaMahon's alternating formula which expresses ribbon Schur functions in the basis of complete homogeneous symmetric functions.
Transitive and Gallai colorings
A Gallai coloring of the complete graph is an edge-coloring with no rainbow triangle. This concept first appeared in the study of comparability graphs and anti-Ramsey theory. We introduce a transitive analogue for acyclic directed graphs, and generalize both notions to Coxeter systems, matroids and commutative algebras.
It is shown that for any finite matroid (or oriented matroid), the maximal number of colors is equal to the matroid rank. This generalizes a result of Erdős-Simonovits-Sós for complete graphs. The number of Gallai (or transitive) colorings of the matroid that use at most $k$ colors is a polynomial in $k$. Also, for any acyclic oriented matroid, represented over the real numbers, the number of transitive colorings using at most 2 colors is equal to the number of chambers in the dual hyperplane arrangement.
We count Gallai and transitive colorings of the root system of type A using the maximal number of colors, and show that, when equipped with a natural descent set map, the resulting quasisymmetric function is symmetric and Schur-positive.
Schubert puzzles and integrability III: separated descents
In paper I of this series we gave positive formulae for expanding the product $\mathfrak S^π\mathfrak S^ρ$ of two Schubert polynomials, in the case that both $π,ρ$ had shared descent set of size $\leq 3$. Here we introduce and give positive formulae for two new classes of Schubert product problems: separated descent in which $π$'s last descent occurs at (or before) $ρ$'s first, and almost separated descent in which $π$'s last two descents occur at (or before) $ρ$'s first two respectively. In both cases our puzzle formulae extend to $K$-theory (multiplying Grothendieck polynomials), and in the separated descent case, to equivariant $K$-theory. The two formulae arise (via quantum integrability) from fusion of minuscule quantized loop algebra representations in types $A$, $D$ respectively.
Descent polynomials for labeled tree
Motivated by the properties of the descent polynomials, which enumerate permutations of $S_n$ with a fixed descent set, we define descent polynomials for labeled rooted trees. We give recursive and explicit formulas for these polynomials and show when known properties of the descent polynomials carry over to the setting of trees.

Building up on our previous works regarding $q$-deformed $P$-partitions, we introduce a new family of subalgebras for the ring of quasisymmetric functions. Each of these subalgebras admits as a basis a $q$-analogue to Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions where $q$ is equal to a complex root of unity. Interestingly, the basis elements are indexed by sets corresponding to an intermediary statistic between peak and descent sets of permutations that we call extended peak.

A new descent set statistic on involutions, defined geometrically via their interpretation as matchings, is introduced in this paper, and shown to be equi-distributed with the standard one. This concept is then applied to construct explicit cyclic descent extensions on involutions, standard Young tableaux and Motzkin paths. Schur-positivity of the associated quasisymmetric functions follows.

We find a simple product formula for the characteristic polynomial of the permutations with a fixed descent set under the weak order. As a corollary we obtain a simple product formula for the characteristic polynomial of alternating permutations. We generalize these results to Coxeter groups. We also find a formula for the generating function for the characteristic polynomials of classical Coxeter groups, which is then related to affine Coxeter groups.

We introduce a new basis of quasisymmetric functions, the row-strict dual immaculate functions. We construct a cyclic, indecomposable 0-Hecke algebra module for these functions. Our row-strict immaculate functions are related to the dual immaculate functions of Berg-Bergeron-Saliola-Serrano-Zabrocki (2014-15) by the involution $ψ$ on the ring of quasisymmetric functions. We give an explicit description of the effect of $ψ$ on the associated 0-Hecke modules, via the poset induced by the 0-Hecke action on standard immaculate tableaux. This remarkable poset reveals other 0-Hecke submodules and quotient modules, often cyclic and indecomposable, notably for a row-strict analogue of the extended Schur functions studied in Assaf-Searles (2019).
Like the dual immaculate function, the row-strict dual immaculate function is the generating function of a suitable set of tableaux, corresponding to a specific descent set. We give a complete combinatorial and representation-theoretic picture by constructing 0-Hecke modules for the remaining variations on descent sets, and showing that \emph{all} the possible variations for generating functions of tableaux occur as characteristics of the 0-Hecke modules determined by these descent sets.

We prove that the size of the e-core of a partition taken under the Poissonised Plancherel measure converges in distribution to, as the Poisson parameter goes to infinity and after a suitable renormalisation, a sum of e-1 mutually independent Gamma distributions with explicit parameters. Such a result already exists for the uniform measure on the set of partitions of n as n goes to infinity, the parameters of the Gamma distributions being all equal. We rely on the fact that the descent set of a partition is a determinantal point process under the Poissonised Plancherel measure and on a central limit theorem for such processes.
A Refinement of the Murnaghan-Nakayama Rule by Descents for Border Strip Tableaux

Lusztig's fake degree is the generating polynomial for the major index of standard Young tableaux of a given shape. Results of Springer and James & Kerber imply that, mysteriously, its evaluation at a $k$-th primitive root of unity yields the number of border strip tableaux with all strips of size $k$, up to sign. This is essentially the special case of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for evaluating an irreducible character of the symmetric group at a rectangular partition.
We refine this result to standard Young tableaux and border strip tableaux with a given number of descents. To do so, we introduce a new statistic for border strip tableaux, extending the classical definition of descents in standard Young tableaux. Curiously, it turns out that our new statistic is very closely related to a descent set for tuples of standard Young tableaux appearing in the quasisymmetric expansion of LLT polynomials given by Haglund, Haiman and Loehr.
Cyclic descents for Motzkin paths

A notion of cyclic descents on standard Young tableaux (SYT) of rectangular shape was introduced by Rhoades, and extended to certain skew shapes by Adin, Elizalde and Roichman. The cyclic descent set restricts to the usual descent set when the largest value is ignored, and has the property that the number of SYT of a given shape with a given cyclic descent set D is invariant under cyclic shifts of the entries of D. Adin, Reiner and Roichman proved that a skew shape has a cyclic descent map if and only if it is not a connected ribbon. Unfortunately, their proof is nonconstructive. Recently Huang constructed an explicit cyclic descent map for all shapes where this is possible.
In the earlier version of Adin, Elizalde and Roichman's paper, they asked to find statistics on combinatorial objects which are equidistributed with cyclic descents on SYT of given shapes. In this paper, we explicitly describe cyclic descent sets for Motzkin paths, which are equidistributed with cyclic descent sets of SYT for three-row shapes. Moreover, in light of Stanley's shuffling theorem, we give a bijective proof of the shuffling property of descent statistics for Motzkin paths.
Asymptotics of descent functions
In 1916, MacMahon showed that permutations in $S_n$ with a fixed descent set $I$ are enumerated by a polynomial $d_I(n)$. Diaz-Lopez, Harris, Insko, Omar, and Sagan recently revived interest in this descent polynomial, and suggested the direction of studying such enumerative questions for other consecutive patterns (descents being the consecutive pattern $21$). Zhu studied this question for the consecutive pattern $321$. We continue this line of work by studying the case of any consecutive pattern of the form $k,k-1,\ldots,1$, which we call a $k$-descent. In this paper, we reduce the problem of determining the asymptotic number of permutations with a certain $k$-descent set to computing an explicit integral. We also prove an equidistribution theorem, showing that any two sparse $k$-descent sets are equally likely.
Counting the number of $k$-descent-avoiding permutations while conditioning on the length $n$ and first element $m$ simultaneously, one obtains a number triangle $f_k(m,n)$ with some useful properties. For $k=3$, the $m=1$ and $m=n$ diagonals are OEIS sequences A049774 and A080635. We prove a $k$th difference recurrence relation for entries of this number triangle. This also leads to an $O(n^2)$ algorithm for computing $k$-descent functions.
Along the way to these results, we prove an explicit formula for the distribution of first elements of $k$-descent-avoiding permutations, as well as for the joint distribution of first and last elements. We also develop an understanding of discrete order statistics. In our approach, we combine algebraic, analytic, and probabilistic tools. A number of open problems are stated at the end.
Popularity of patterns over $d$-equivalence classes of words and permutations

Two same length words are $d$-equivalent if they have same descent set and same underlying alphabet. In particular, two same length permutations are $d$-equivalent if they have same descent set. The popularity of a pattern in a set of words is the overall number of copies of the pattern within the words of the set. We show the far-from-trivial fact that two patterns are $d$-equivalent if and only if they are equipopular over any $d$-equivalence class, and this equipopularity does not follow obviously from a trivial equidistribution.
Enumerating Permutations and Rim Hooks Characterized by Double Descent Sets
Let $dd(I;n)$ denote the number of permutations of $[n]$ with double descent set $I$. For singleton sets $I$, we present a recursive formula for $dd(I;n)$ and a method to estimate $dd(I;n)$. We also discuss the enumeration of certain classes of rim hooks. Let $\mathcal{R}_I(n)$ denote the set of all rim hooks of length $n$ with double descent set $I$, so that any tableau of one of these rim hooks corresponds to a permutation with double descent set $I$. We present a formula for the size of $\mathcal{R}_I(n)$ when $I$ is a singleton set, and we also present a formula for the size of $\mathcal{R}_I(n)$ when $I$ is the empty set. We additionally present several conjectures about the asymptotics of certain ratios of $dd(I;n)$.
Higher Lie characters and cyclic descent extension on conjugacy classes

A now-classical cyclic extension of the descent set of a permutation has been introduced by Klyachko and Cellini. Following a recent axiomatic approach to this notion, it is natural to ask which sets of permutations admit such an extension.
The main result of this paper is a complete answer in the case of conjucay classes of permutations. It is shown that the conjugacy class of cycle type $λ$ has such an extension if and only if $λ$ is not of the form $(r^s)$ for some square-free $r$. The proof involves a detailed study of hook constituents in higher Lie characters.
On cyclic Schur-positive sets of permutation

We introduce a notion of {\em cyclic Schur-positivity} for sets of permutations, which naturally extends the classical notion of Schur-positivity, and it involves the existence of a bijection from permutations to standard Young tableaux that preserves the cyclic descent set. Cyclic Schur-positive sets of permutations are always Schur-positive, but the converse does not hold, as exemplified by inverse descent classes, Knuth classes and conjugacy classes.
In this paper we show that certain classes of permutations invariant under either horizontal or vertical rotation are cyclic Schur-positive. The proof unveils a new equidistribution phenomenon of descent sets on permutations, provides affirmative solutions to conjectures from [9] and [2], and yields new examples of Schur-positive sets.
Symmetric multisets of permutations

The following long-standing problem in combinatorics was first posed in 1993 by Gessel and Reutenauer. For which multisubsets $B$ of the symmetric group $\fS_n$ is the quasisymmetric function $$Q(B) = \sum_{π\in B}F_{\Des(π), n}$$ a symmetric function? Here $\Des(π)$ is the descent set of $π$ and $F_{\Des(π), n}$ is Gessel's fundamental basis for the vector space of quasisymmetric functions. The purpose of this paper is to provide a useful characterization of these multisets. Using this characterization we prove a conjecture of Elizalde and Roichman. Two other corollaries are also given. The first is a short new proof that conjugacy classes are symmetric sets, a well known result first proved by Gessel and Reutenauer. Our second corollary is a unified explanation that both left and right multiplication of symmetric multisets, by inverse $J$-classes, is symmetric. The case of right multiplication was first proved by Elizalde and Roichman.
OGS canonical forms and exchange laws for the I and for the A-type Coxeter groups
We consider a generalization of the fundamental theorem of finitely generated abelian groups for some non-abelian groups, which is called OGS. First, we consider the dihedral group, which is a non-abelian extension of an abelian group by an involution. Then, we focus on a special case, where the abelian group is cyclic, which is the two-generated Coxeter group I{2}(m). We mention interesting connections between the reduced Coxeter presentation and a particular OGS canonical presentation, which we call the standard OGS canonical presentation. These connections motivate us to offer a generalization of the standard OGS to the A-type Coxeter group, which can be considered as the dual family to the I-type Coxeter groups. The n-1 generated A-type Coxeter groups can be considered as the symmetric group S{n} for an arbitrary n. We mention the standard and the dual-standard OGS of S{n}, where, The standard OGS canonical form of S{n} has a special interest in combinatorics, since in 2001, R. M. Adin, and Y. Roichman has proved that sum of the exponents in the canonical form is coincide with the major-index of the permutation, which is equi-disributed with the Coxeter length. In this paper we extend the results of Adin and Roichman very significantly, where we show interesting properties of the exchange laws, we define standard OGS elementary factorization, which connects between the standard OGS and the descent set of a permutation. Then, by using the standard OGS elementary factorization, we find a new explicit formula for the Coxeter length of an element of S{n}, and we give a new algorithm for the standard OGS canonical form and the descent set of the inverse element of an arbitrary element of S{n}.
A Sundaram type bijection for $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$: vacillating tableaux and pairs consisting of a standard Young tableau and an orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableau
We present a bijection between vacillating tableaux and pairs consisting of a standard Young tableau and an orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableau for the special orthogonal group $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$. This bijection is motivated by the direct-sum-decomposition of the $r$th tensor power of the defining representation of $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$. To formulate it, we use Kwon's orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableaux and introduce new alternative tableaux they are in bijection with. Moreover we use a suitably defined descent set for vacillating tableaux to determine the quasi-symmetric expansion of the Frobenius characters of the isotypic components.
Revisiting pattern avoidance and quasisymmetric functions
Let S_n be the nth symmetric group. Given a set of permutations Pi we denote by S_n(Pi) the set of permutations in S_n which avoid Pi in the sense of pattern avoidance. Consider the generating function Q_n(Pi) = sum_pi F_{Des pi} where the sum is over all pi in S_n(Pi) and F_{Des pi} is the fundamental quasisymmetric function corresponding to the descent set of pi. Hamaker, Pawlowski, and Sagan introduced Q_n(Pi) and studied its properties, in particular, finding criteria for when this quasisymmetric function is symmetric or even Schur nonnegative for all n >= 0. The purpose of this paper is to continue their investigation answering some of their questions, proving one of their conjectures, as well as considering other natural questions about Q_n(Pi). In particular we look at Pi of small cardinality, superstandard hooks, partial shuffles, Knuth classes, and a stability property.
