Note on adjacency spectra for twice punctured hypercubes
Eigenspaces of hypercube graph adjacency matrices are well understood. We extend this to subgraphs obtained by removing a vertex or antipodal pair of vertices, motivated by a question on zonotopes.
An explicit formula for Koornwinder moments and Rains' positivity conjecture
The asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) is an important particle model with deep connections to orthogonal polynomials. Motivated by this connection, Corteel and Williams introduced the Koornwinder moments $M^{Z}_λ$ at $ t=q $, which generalize the moments of Askey--Wilson polynomials. They showed that the partition function of the two-species ASEP is equal to $M^{Z}_λ$ for a one-row partition $ λ$. In this paper, we investigate a conjecture of Rains on the positivity of the minimal numerator of the Koornwinder moment $M^{Z}_λ$. We derive the first explicit formula for this moment, thereby obtaining a precise formulation of the conjecture by determining the minimal denominator of $M^{Z}_λ$. We also propose a generalization of the conjecture for the more general Koornwinder moments $M^{Z}_{λ,μ}$ indexed by two partitions at special parameter values. We prove the generalized Rains' conjecture in two special cases: $(ξ,q)=(1,0)$ and $(ξ,q)=(1,1)$. For $(ξ,q)=(1,0)$, we construct a lattice path model and obtain a combinatorial formula for $M^{Z}_{λ,μ}$ in terms of non-intersecting lattice paths. For $(ξ,q)=(1,1)$, we establish an explicit product formula for $M^{Z}_{λ,μ}$ and give a combinatorial interpretation using lecture hall tableaux.

Thrall's problem for two rows
In this paper, we study Thrall's problem for the higher Lie modules $L_λ$. Our main result provides a tableau-theoretic description of the Schur expansion of the character of $L_λ$ when $λ$ has two rows, thereby solving Thrall's problem in this case. This formula is expressed in terms of standard Young tableaux with major index congruence conditions and a spin-parity condition defined through bijections with Yamanouchi domino tableaux. We also obtain tableau formulas for hook shapes and partitions with distinct parts, and these results extend to all partitions in which each part greater than $2$ occurs at most twice.
Bijections for rhombic alternative tableaux
We generalize well-known bijections between alternative tableaux and permutations to bijections between rhombic alternative tableaux (RAT) and assemblées of permutations. We show how these various bijections are connected. As a consequence, we find a refined enumeration formula for RAT. One of our bijections carries many statistics from RAT to assemblées; notably, it sends the number of free cells to the number of crossings, which answers a question of Mandelshtam and Viennot. We also find an $r!$-to-$1$ map from marked Laguerre histories to assemblées, answering a question of Corteel and Nunge.
Hadamard Products of dual Jacobi-Trudi matrices
We study positivity properties of Hadamard products of Jacobi-Trudi matrices. Maló proved that the Hadamard (entrywise) product of two totally positive upper-triangular Toeplitz matrices whose Toeplitz sequences are the coefficient sequences of real-rooted polynomials with nonpositive zeros is again totally positive. Sokal conjectured that this result can be strengthened to total monomial positivity for the Hadamard product of Jacobi-Trudi matrices. In this paper we show that Temperley-Lieb immanants are Schur positive for Hadamard products of Jacobi-Trudi matrices given by ribbon-like skew shapes. In particular, we affirm Sokal's conjecture for minors given by ribbon-like skew shapes. Moreover, we provide a manifestly positive Schur expansion for Temperley-Lieb immanants evaluated on the Hadamard product of Jacobi-Trudi matrices indexed by ribbons. In addition, for the ribbon case, we construct a corresponding representation, offering a representation-theoretic proof of the Schur positivity.

Bott manifolds of Bott--Samelson type and assemblies of ordered partitions
A Bott manifold is a smooth projective toric variety having an iterated $\mathbb{C} P^1$-bundle structure. A certain family of Bott manifolds is used to understand the structure of Bott--Samelson varieties (or Bott--Samelson--Demazure--Hansen varieties), which provide desingularizations of Schubert varieties. Indeed, each Bott--Samelson variety is diffeomorphic to a Bott manifold. However, not all Bott manifolds originate from Bott--Samelson varieties. Those that do are specifically referred to as Bott manifolds of Bott--Samelson type. In this paper, we provide a characterization of Bott manifolds of Bott--Samelson type by exploring their relationship with combinatorial objects called assemblies of ordered partitions. Using this relationship, we enumerate Bott manifolds of Bott--Samelson type and describe isomorphic Bott manifolds of Bott--Samelson type in terms of assemblies of ordered partitions.
Bounded Littlewood identities with fixed number of odd rows or odd columns
A Littlewood identity is an identity equating a sum of Schur functions with an infinite product. A bounded Littlewood identity is one where the sum is taken over the partitions with a bounded number of rows or columns. The price to pay is that the infinite product has to be replaced by a determinant. The focus of this article is on refinements of such bounded Littlewood identities where one also prescribes the number of odd-length rows or columns of the partitions. Goulden [{\it Discrete Math.} {\bf99} (1992), 69--77] had given such a refinement in which the number of columns is bounded and the number of odd-length rows is prescribed. We provide refinements where the number of columns is bounded and the number of odd-length columns is prescribed. Furthermore, we present new formulations of such bounded Littlewood identities involving skewing operators. As corollaries we obtain non-standard formulas for numbers of standard Young tableaux with restricted shapes as above. In the last part of the article we discuss combinatorial interpretations of such identities in terms of up-down tableaux. As corollaries, we obtain identities between numbers of standard Young tableaux and numbers of (marked) vacillating tableaux.

Hall--Littlewood expansions of chromatic quasisymmetric polynomials using linked rook placements
In this work, we obtain a Hall--Littlewood expansion of the chromatic quasisymmetric function arising from a natural unit interval order and describe the coefficients in terms of linked rook placements. Applying the Carlsson--Mellit relation between chromatic quasisymmetric functions and unicellular LLT polynomials, we also obtain a combinatorial description for the coefficients of the unicellular LLT polynomials expanded in terms of the modified transformed Hall--Littlewood polynomials.

Hilbert polynomials of configuration spaces over graphs of circumference at most 1
The $ k $-configuration space $ B_kΓ$ of a topological space $ Γ$ is the space of sets of $ k $ distinct points in $ Γ$. In this paper, we consider the case where $ Γ$ is a graph of circumference at most $1$. We show that for all $ k\ge0 $, the $ i $-th Betti number of $ B_kΓ$ is given by a polynomial $P_Γ^i(k)$ in $ k $, called the Hilbert polynomial of $ Γ$. We find an expression for the Hilbert polynomial $P_Γ^i(k)$ in terms of those coming from the canonical $1$-bridge decomposition of $ Γ$. We also give a combinatorial description of the coefficients of $P_Γ^i(k)$.

Total positivity of Hadamard product of dual Jacobi--Trudi matrices
In 1992, Wagner proved that the Hadamard product of two totally positive lower triangular Toeplitz matrices is totally positive. In this work, we strengthen this result by establishing total monomial positivity for the Hadamard product of Jacobi--Trudi matrices. In particular, we resolve a conjecture of Sokal concerning the Hadamard square of Jacobi--Trudi matrices. Moreover, we provide a manifestly positive Schur expansion for the Hadamard square of Jacobi--Trudi matrices indexed by ribbons. In addition, we construct a corresponding representation, offering a representation-theoretic proof of the Schur positivity.
Refinement of Hikita's $e$-positivity theorem via Abreu--Nigro's $g$-functions and restricted modular law
We study the symmetric functions \( g_{\mm,k}(x;q) \), introduced by Abreu and Nigro for a Hessenberg function \( \mm \) and a positive integer \( k \), which refine the chromatic symmetric function. Building on Hikita's recent breakthrough on the Stanley--Stembridge conjecture, we prove the \( e \)-positivity of \( g_{\mm,k}(x;1) \), refining Hikita's result. We also provide a Schur expansion of the sum \( \sum_{k=1}^n e_k(x) g_{\mm,n-k}(x;q) \) in terms of \( P \)-tableaux with 1 in the upper-left corner. We introduce a restricted version of the modular law as our main tool. Then, we show that any function satisfying the restricted modular law is determined by its values on disjoint unions of path graphs.

Combinatorics of generalized orthogonal polynomials of type $R_{II}$
In 1995, Ismail and Masson introduced orthogonal polynomials of types \( R_I \) and \( R_{II} \), which are defined by specific three-term recurrence relations with additional conditions. Recently, Kim and Stanton found a combinatorial interpretation for the moments of orthogonal polynomials of type \( R_I \) in the spirit of the combinatorial theory of orthogonal polynomials due to Flajolet and Viennot. In this paper, we push this combinatorial model further to orthogonal polynomials of type \( R_{II} \). Moreover, we generalize orthogonal polynomials of type \( R_{II} \) by relaxing some of their conditions. We then prove a master theorem, which generalizes combinatorial models for moments of various types of orthogonal polynomials: classical orthogonal polynomials, Laurent biorthogonal polynomials, and orthogonal polynomials of types \( R_I \) and \( R_{II} \).
Hook-valued tableau uncrowding and tableau switching
Refined canonical stable Grothendieck polynomials were introduced by Hwang, Jang, Kim, Song, and Song. There exist two combinatorial models for these polynomials: one using hook-valued tableaux and the other using pairs of a semistandard Young tableau and (what we call) an exquisite tableau. An uncrowding algorithm on hook-valued tableaux was introduced by Pan, Pappe, Poh, and Schilling. In this paper, we discover a novel connection between the two models via the uncrowding and Goulden--Greene's jeu de taquin algorithms, using a classical result of Benkart, Sottile, and Stroomer on tableau switching. This connection reveals a symmetry of the uncrowding algorithm defined on hook-valued tableaux. As a corollary, we obtain another combinatorial model for the refined canonical stable Grothendieck polynomials in terms of biflagged tableaux, which naturally appear in the characterization of the image of the uncrowding map.
Refined canonical stable Grothendieck polynomials and their duals, Part 2
This paper is the sequel of the paper under the same title with part 1, where we introduced refined canonical stable Grothendieck polynomials and their duals with two families of infinite parameters. In this paper we give combinatorial interpretations for these polynomials using generalizations of set-valued tableaux and reverse plane partitions, respectively. Our results extend to their flagged and skew versions.

Enumeration of multiplex juggling card sequences using generalized q-derivatives
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications 6:2 (2026) Article S2R12 • Search Publication
In 2019, Butler, Choi, Kim, and Seo introduced a new type of juggling card that represents multiplex juggling patterns in a natural bijective way. They conjectured a formula for the generating function for the number of multiplex juggling cards with capacity 2. In this paper we prove their conjecture. More generally, we find an explicit formula for the generating function with any capacity. We also find an expression for the generating function for multiplex juggling card sequences by introducing a generalization of the q-derivative operator. As a consequence, we show that this generating function is a rational function.
Lecture hall graphs and the Askey scheme
We establish, for every family of orthogonal polynomials in the $q$-Askey scheme and the Askey scheme, a combinatorial model for mixed moments and coefficients in terms of paths on the lecture hall graph. This generalizes the previous results of Corteel and Kim for the little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. We build these combinatorial models by bootstrapping, beginning with polynomials at the bottom and working towards Askey-Wilson polynomials which sit at the top of the $q$-Askey scheme. As an application of the theory, we provide the first combinatorial proof of the symmetries in the parameters of the Askey-Wilson polynomials.
Bounded Littlewood identities for cylindric Schur functions
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 378 (2025), 6765-6829 • View PublicationBIB
The identities which are in the literature often called ``bounded Littlewood identities" are determinantal formulas for the sum of Schur functions indexed by partitions with bounded height. They have interesting combinatorial consequences such as connections between standard Young tableaux of bounded height, lattice walks in a Weyl chamber, and noncrossing matchings. In this paper we prove affine analogs of the bounded Littlewood identities. These are determinantal formulas for sums of cylindric Schur functions. We also study combinatorial aspects of these identities. As a consequence we obtain an unexpected connection between cylindric standard Young tableaux and \( r \)-noncrossing and \( s \)-nonnesting matchings.

Extended commonality of paths and cycles via Schur convexity
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $H$ is \emph{common} if the number of monochromatic copies of $H$ in a 2-edge-colouring of the complete graph $K_n$ is asymptotically minimised by the random colouring, or equivalently, $t_H(W)+t_H(1-W)\geq 2^{1-e(H)}$ holds for every graphon $W:[0,1]^2\rightarrow [0,1]$, where $t_H(.)$ denotes the homomorphism density of the graph $H$. Paths and cycles being common is one of the earliest cornerstones in extremal graph theory, due to Mulholland and Smith (1959), Goodman (1959), and Sidorenko (1989). We prove a graph homomorphism inequality that extends the commonality of paths and cycles. Namely, $t_H(W)+t_H(1-W)\geq t_{K_2}(W)^{e(H)} +t_{K_2}(1-W)^{e(H)}$ whenever $H$ is a path or a cycle and $W:[0,1]^2\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a bounded symmetric measurable function. This answers a question of Sidorenko from 1989, who proved a slightly weaker result for even-length paths to prove the commonality of odd cycles. Furthermore, it also settles a recent conjecture of Behague, Morrison, and Noel in a strong form, who asked if the inequality holds for graphons $W$ and odd cycles $H$. Our proof uses Schur convexity of complete homogeneous symmetric functions, which may be of independent interest.

Characteristic polynomials of the weak order on classical and affine Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We find a simple product formula for the characteristic polynomial of the permutations with a fixed descent set under the weak order. As a corollary we obtain a simple product formula for the characteristic polynomial of alternating permutations. We generalize these results to Coxeter groups. We also find a formula for the generating function for the characteristic polynomials of classical Coxeter groups, which is then related to affine Coxeter groups.
Negative moments of orthogonal polynomials

If a sequence indexed by nonnegative integers satisfies a linear recurrence without constant terms, one can extend the indices of the sequence to negative integers using the recurrence. Recently, Cigler and Krattenthaler showed that the negative version of the number of bounded Dyck paths is the number of bounded alternating sequences. In this paper we provide two methods to compute the negative versions of sequences related to moments of orthogonal polynomials. We give a combinatorial model for the negative version of the number of bounded Motzkin paths. We also prove two conjectures of Cigler and Krattenthaler on reciprocity between determinants.
