A lattice path model for the volume of the Monge polytope
Monge matrices arise throughout combinatorial optimization and algorithm design; the Monge polytope $\mathcal{M}_{pq}$ is the set of $p \times q$ Monge matrices lying inside the standard simplex on the set of matrix coordinates. We find a Stanley decomposition of the associated affine semigroup, and use it to obtain a volume formula for $\mathcal{M}_{pq}$ expressed as a sum over "Z-avoiding" Delannoy paths in a $p \times q$ grid. An efficient dynamic-programming implementation of this formula computes the volume in dimensions far beyond the reach of general-purpose exact-volume algorithms (e.g., the volume of $\mathcal{M}_{20,20}$, which has dimension 399, is computed in a fraction of a second). As a corollary of our Stanley decomposition, we also obtain a combinatorial closed form for the Ehrhart series of $\mathcal{M}_{pq}$.
An explicit formula for Koornwinder moments and Rains' positivity conjecture
The asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) is an important particle model with deep connections to orthogonal polynomials. Motivated by this connection, Corteel and Williams introduced the Koornwinder moments $M^{Z}_λ$ at $ t=q $, which generalize the moments of Askey--Wilson polynomials. They showed that the partition function of the two-species ASEP is equal to $M^{Z}_λ$ for a one-row partition $ λ$. In this paper, we investigate a conjecture of Rains on the positivity of the minimal numerator of the Koornwinder moment $M^{Z}_λ$. We derive the first explicit formula for this moment, thereby obtaining a precise formulation of the conjecture by determining the minimal denominator of $M^{Z}_λ$. We also propose a generalization of the conjecture for the more general Koornwinder moments $M^{Z}_{λ,μ}$ indexed by two partitions at special parameter values. We prove the generalized Rains' conjecture in two special cases: $(ξ,q)=(1,0)$ and $(ξ,q)=(1,1)$. For $(ξ,q)=(1,0)$, we construct a lattice path model and obtain a combinatorial formula for $M^{Z}_{λ,μ}$ in terms of non-intersecting lattice paths. For $(ξ,q)=(1,1)$, we establish an explicit product formula for $M^{Z}_{λ,μ}$ and give a combinatorial interpretation using lecture hall tableaux.

Determinantal formulae for a symmetric generating function of totally symmetric plane partitions
Ilse Fischer and the second author introduced in [Algebr. Comb. 7 (2024), no. 5, 1319-1345] a two parameter family of polynomials defined as sums over totally symmetric plane partitions and connected to alternating sign matrices and cyclically symmetric lozenge tilings of a hexagon with a triangular hole. In this paper we present several determinantal formulae leading to new lattice path models and a novel family of tableaux. The later illustrates that the polynomials of our interest can be thought of as generalisations of the three dual Littlewood identities.

Gibbs partitions and lattice paths
This work is devoted to the analysis of a Gibbs partition model, also known as a composition scheme. We consider a natural new condition on the component weights. It leads to a new behavior for the total number of components. We discover a condensation phenomenon, producing a unique giant component comprising almost the entire mass. Additionally, we prove a point process limit describing the asymptotic size of the non-maximal components exhibiting a sublinear power-law growth. A particular motivation for our article stems from applications, ranging from simple random walks in the cube, over lattice paths models in the plane, pairs of directed random walks, over to urn models and card guessing games.

Completing the Asymptotic Classification of Mostly Symmetric Short Step Walks in an Orthant
In recent years, the techniques of analytic combinatorics in several variables (ACSV) have been applied to determine asymptotics for several families of lattice path models restricted to the orthant $\mathbb{N}^d$ and defined by step sets $\mathcal{S}\subset\{-1,0,1\}^d\setminus\{\mathbf{0}\}$. Using the theory of ACSV for smooth singular sets, Melczer and Mishna determined asymptotics for the number of walks in any model whose set of steps $\mathcal{S}$ is "highly symmetric" (symmetric over every axis). Building on this work, Melczer and Wilson determined asymptotics for all models where $\mathcal{S}$ is "mostly symmetric" (symmetric over all but one axis) *except* for models whose set of steps have a vector sum of zero but are not highly symmetric. In this paper we complete the asymptotic classification of the mostly symmetric case by analyzing a family of saddle-point-like integrals whose amplitudes are singular near their saddle points.
On an identity of Chaundy and Bullard. III. Basic and elliptic extensions
Published in AMS Contemp. Math. 819 (2025), 233-254 • Search Publication
The identity by Chaundy and Bullard expresses $1$ as a sum of two truncated binomial series in one variable where the truncations depend on two different non-negative integers. We present basic and elliptic extensions of the Chaundy--Bullard identity. The most general result, the elliptic extension, involves, in addition to the nome $p$ and the base $q$, four independent complex variables. Our proof uses a suitable weighted lattice path model. We also show how three of the basic extensions can be viewed as Bézout identities. Inspired by the lattice path model, we give a new elliptic extension of the binomial theorem, taking the form of an identity for elliptic commuting variables. We further present variants of the homogeneous form of the identity for $q$-commuting and for elliptic commuting variables.

A walk in my lattice path garden
Various lattice path models are reviewed. The enumeration is done using generating functions. A few bijective considerations are woven in as well. The kernel method is often used. Computer algebra was an essential tool. Some results are new, some have appeared before. The lattice path models we treated, are: Hoppy's walks, the combinatorics of sequence A002212 in \cite{OEIS} (skew Dyck paths, Schröder paths, Hex-trees, decorated ordered trees, multi-edge trees, etc.) Weighted unary-binary trees also occur, and we could improve on our old paper on Horton-Strahler numbers \cite{FlPr86}, by using a different substitution. Some material on ternary trees appears as well, as on Motzkin numbers and paths (a model due to Retakh), and a new concept called amplitude that was found in \cite{irene}. Some new results on Deutsch paths in a strip are included as well. During the Covid period, I spent much time with this beautiful concept that I dare to call Deutsch paths, since Emeric Deutsch stands at the beginning with a problem that he posted in the American Mathematical Monthly some 20 years ago. Peaks and valleys, studied by Rainer Kemp 40 years under the names \textsc{max}-turns and \textsc{min}-turns, are revisited with a more modern approach, streamlining the analysis, relying on the `subcritical case' (named so by Philippe Flajolet), the adding a new slice technique and once again the kernel method.

Congruence for lattice path models with filter restrictions and long steps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive a path counting formula for two-dimensional lattice path model with filter restrictions in the presence of long steps, source and target points of which are situated near the filters. This solves a problem of finding an explicit formula for multiplicities of modules in tensor product decomposition of $T(1)^{\otimes N}$ for $U_q(sl_2)$ with divided powers, where $q$ is a root of unity. Combinatorial treatment of this problem calls for definition of congruence of regions in lattice path models, properties of which are explored in this paper.

Cylindric plane partitions, Lambda determinants, Commutants in semicircular systems
This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part deals with cylindric plane partitions. The second with lambda-determinants and the third with commutators in semi-circular systems. For more detailed abstract please see inside. Cylindric plane partitions may be thought of as a natural generalization of reverse plane partitions. A generating series for the enumeration of cylindric plane partitions was recently given by Borodin. The first result of section one is a new bijective proof of Borodin's identity which makes use of Fomin's growth diagram framework for generalized RSK correspondences. The second result is a $(q,t)$-analog of Borodin's identity which extends previous work by Okada in the reverse plane partition case. The third result is an explicit combinatorial interpretation of the Macdonald weight occurring in the $(q,t)$-analog using the non-intersecting lattice path model for cylindric plane partitions. Alternating sign matrices were discovered by Robbins and Rumsey whilst studying \emph{$λ$-determinants}. In the second part of this thesis we prove a multi-parameter generalization of the $λ$-determinant, generalizing a recent result by di Francesco. Like the original $λ$-determinant, our formula exhibits the \emph{Laurent phenomenon}. Semicircular systems were first introduced by Voiculescu as a part of his study of von Neumann algebras. In the third part of this thesis we study certain commutator subalgebras of the semicircular system. We find a projection matrix with an interesting self-similar structure. Making use of our projection formula we given an alternative, elementary proof that the semicircular system is a factor.

Counting filter restricted paths in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive a path counting formula for two-dimensional lattice path model on a plane with filter restrictions. A filter is a line that restricts the path passing it to one of possible directions. Moreover, each path that touches this line is assigned a special weight. The periodic filter restrictions are motivated by the problem of tensor power decomposition for representations of quantum $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ at roots of unity. Our main result is the explicit formula for the weighted number of paths from the origin to a fixed point between two filters in this model.

Generating functions for a lattice path model introduced by Deutsch
Published • View PublicationBIB
The lattice path model suggested by E. Deutsch is derived from ordinary Dyck paths, but with additional down-steps of size -3,-5,-7,... . For such paths, we find the generating functions of them, according to length, ending at level $i$, both, when considering them from left to right and from right to left. The generating functions are intrinsically cubic, and thus (for $i=0$) in bijection to various objects, like even trees, ternary trees, etc.

Determinantal and Pfaffian identities for ninth variation skew Schur functions and Q-functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently Okada defined algebraically ninth variation skew Q-functions, in parallel to Macdonald's ninth variation skew Schur functions. Here we introduce a skew shifted tableaux definition of these ninth variation skew Q-functions, and prove by means of a non-intersecting lattice path model a Pfaffian outside decomposition result in the form of a ninth variation version of Hamel's Pfaffian outside decomposition identity. As corollaries to this we derive Pfaffian identities generalizing those of Josefiak-Pragacz, Nimmo, and most recently Okada. As a preamble to this we present a parallel development based on (unshifted) semistandard tableaux that leads to a ninth variation version of the outside decomposition determinantal identity of Hamel and Goulden. In this case the corollaries we offer include determinantal identities generalizing the Schur and skew Schur function identities of Jacobi-Trudi, Giambelli, Lascoux-Pragacz, Stembridge, and Okada.

Higher Dimensional Lattice Walks: Connecting Combinatorial and Analytic Behavior
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the enumeration of walks on the non-negative lattice $\mathbb{N}^d$, with steps defined by a set $\mathcal{S} \subset \{-1, 0, 1\}^d \setminus \{\mathbf{0}\}$. Previous work in this area has established asymptotics for the number of walks in certain families of models by applying the techniques of analytic combinatorics in several variables (ACSV), where one encodes the generating function of a lattice path model as the diagonal of a multivariate rational function. Melczer and Mishna obtained asymptotics when the set of steps $\mathcal{S}$ is symmetric over every axis; in this setting one can always apply the methods of ACSV to a multivariate rational function whose whose set of singularities is a smooth manifold (the simplest case). Here we go further, providing asymptotics for models with generating functions that must be encoded by multivariate rational functions with non-smooth singular sets. In the process, our analysis connects past work to deeper structural results in the theory of analytic combinatorics in several variables. One application is a closed form for asymptotics of models defined by step sets which are symmetric over all but one axis. As a special case, we apply our results when $d=2$ to give a rigorous proof of asymptotics conjectured by Bostan and Kauers; asymptotics for walks returning to boundary axes and the origin are also given.

Random polymers via orthogonal Whittaker and symplectic Schur functions
This thesis deals with some $(1+1)$-dimensional lattice path models from the KPZ universality class: the directed random polymer with inverse-gamma weights (known as log-gamma polymer) and its zero temperature degeneration, i.e. the last passage percolation model, with geometric or exponential waiting times. We consider three path geometries: point-to-line, point-to-half-line, and point-to-line with paths restricted to stay in a half-plane. Through exact formulas, we establish new connections between integrable probabilistic models and the ubiquitous Whittaker and Schur functions. More in detail, via the use of A. N. Kirillov's geometric Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence, we compute the Laplace transform of the polymer partition functions in the above geometries in terms of orthogonal Whittaker functions. In the case of the first two geometries we also provide multiple contour integral formulas. For the corresponding last passage percolation problems, we obtain new formulas in terms of symplectic Schur functions, both directly via RSK on polygonal arrays and via zero temperature limit from the log-gamma polymer formulas. As scaling limits of the point-to-line and point-to-half-line models with exponential waiting times, we derive Sasamoto's Fredholm determinant formula for the GOE Tracy-Widom distribution, as well as the one-point marginal distribution of the ${\rm Airy}_{2\to1}$ process.

Factorial characters of classical Lie groups and their combinatorial realisations
Just as the definition of factorial Schur functions as a ratio of determinants allows one to show that they satisfy a Jacobi-Trudi-type identity and have an explicit combinatorial realisation in terms of semistandard tableaux, so we offer here definitions of factorial irreducible characters of the classical Lie groups as ratios of determinants that share these two features. These factorial characters are each specified by a partition, $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n)$, and in each case a flagged Jacobi-Trudi identity is derived that expresses the factorial character as a determinant of corresponding factorial characters specified by one-part partitions, $(m)$, for which we supply generating functions. These identities are established by manipulating determinants through the use of certain recurrence relations derived from these generating functions. The transitions to combinatorial realisations of the factorial characters in terms of tableaux are then established by means of non-intersecting lattice path models. The results apply to $gl(n)$, $so(2n+1)$, $sp(2n)$ and $o(2n)$, and are extended to the case of $so(2n)$ by making use of newly defined factorial difference characters.

Factorial characters of some classical Lie groups
A definition is offered of the factorial characters of the general linear group, the symplectic group and the orthogonal group in an odd dimensional space. It is shown that these characters satisfy certain flagged Jacobi-Trudi identities. These identities are then used to give combinatorial expressions for the factorial characters: first in terms of a lattice path model and then in terms of the well known tableaux associated with the classical groups. Factorial Q-functions are then defined in terms of three sets of primed shifted tableaux, and shown to satisfy Tokuyama type identities in each case.

On a quantum causal stochastic double product integral related to Lévy area
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the family of causal double product integrals \begin{equation*} \prod_{a < x < y < b}\left(1 + i{λ\over 2}(dP_x dQ_y - dQ_x dP_y) + i {μ\over 2}(dP_x dP_y + dQ_x dQ_y)\right) \end{equation*} where $P$ and $Q$ are the mutually noncommuting momentum and position Brownian motions of quantum stochastic calculus. The evaluation is motivated heuristically by approximating the continuous double product by a discrete product in which infinitesimals are replaced by finite increments. The latter is in turn approximated by the second quantisation of a discrete double product of rotation-like operators in different planes due to a result in [Hudson-Pei2015]. The main problem solved in this paper is the explicit evaluation of the continuum limit $W$ of the latter, and showing that $W$ is a unitary operator. The kernel of $W$ is written in terms of Bessel functions, and the evaluation is achieved by working on a lattice path model and enumerating linear extensions of related partial orderings, where the enumeration turns out to be heavily related to Dyck paths and generalisations of Catalan numbers.

Towards a Combinatorial Understanding of Lattice Path Asymptotics

We provide a new strategy to compute the exponential growth constant of enumeration sequences counting walks in lattice path models restricted to the quarter plane. The bounds arise by comparison with half-planes models. In many cases the bounds are provably tight, and provide a combinatorial interpretation of recent formulas of Fayolle and Raschel (2012) and Bostan, Raschel and Salvy (2013). We discuss how to generalize to higher dimensions.

Singularity analysis via the iterated kernel method

In the quarter plane, five lattice path models with unit steps have resisted the otherwise general approach of Fayolle, Rachel, and Kurkova. Here we consider these five models, called the singular models, and prove that the generating functions marking the number of walks of a given length are not D-finite -- thus finishing the proof of a conjecture of Bousquet-Mélou and Mishna. Furthermore, we provide exact and asymptotic enumerative formulas for the number of such walks.

Enumeration of Cylindric Plane Partitions - part I
Published • View PublicationBIB
Cylindric plane partitions may be thought of as a natural generalization of reverse plane partitions. A generating series for the enumeration of cylindric plane partitions was recently given by Borodin. The first result of this paper is a $(q,t)$-analog of Borodin's identity which extends previous work by Okada in the reverse plane partition case. Our proof uses commutation relations for $(q,t)$-vertex operators acting on Macdonald polynomials as given by Garsia, Haiman and Tesla. The second result of this paper is an explicit combinatorial interpreation of the $(q,t)$-Macdonald weight in terms of a non-intersecting lattice path model on the cylinder.
