$m$-Bell and $m$-Stirling numbers: Iterated binomial transforms, hyper-Bessel functions, and moments of the Conway--Maxwell--Poisson distribution
We introduce a natural generalization of the Bell numbers: the $m$-Bell numbers $B^{(m)}_{n}$, characterized by the property that $m$ applications of the binomial transform reproduce the original sequence shifted $m$ places to the left. Their exponential generating functions satisfy $m$-th order ordinary differential equations whose solutions are hypergeometric (hyper-Bessel) functions, specializing to the exponential function when $m=1$ (classical Bell numbers) and to modified Bessel functions when $m=2$ (yielding "Bessel-Bell" numbers). Mirroring the Bell-Stirling correspondence, we construct $m$-Stirling triangular arrays from the two-term recurrence $S_m (n+1,k) = m \left\lfloor k/m \right\rfloor S_m(n,k)+S_m(n,k-1)$ and prove an elementary shift identity from which the central structure theorem follows: the row sums of the $m$-Stirling triangle reproduce $B^{(m)}_{n}$, and, more finely, the residue-class row sums are precisely the $m$ primitive $m$-Bell sequences. The $m$-Stirling numbers come in dual pairs (with first-kind partners, generalized falling factorials, and Lah-type companions), serve as conversion operators between polynomial bases, admit Dobiński-like formulas, and count congruence-constrained partitions in an urn model as well as restricted permutation insertion histories. Finally, we show that the $m$-Bell numbers govern the moments of the Conway-Maxwell-Poisson distribution with integer dispersion parameter $ν=m$: the scaled moments are combinations of fixed hyper-Bessel carrier ratios whose integer coefficients are precisely the primitive $m$-Bell sequences, recovering for $m=1$ the classical fact that the moments of the Poisson distribution are the Bell numbers.

On aggregation-quantization permutability problem for discrete-time Markov chains
Given random walk on a graph, the corresponding discrete-time quantum walk can be constructed using the method proposed by Szegedy. On the other hand, given a partition of the set of states of a Markov chain, one can study the corresponding aggregated process. We extend the aggregation technique to the level of quantum Markov chains. We provide conditions under which application of these two operations - Szegedy's quantization and aggregation - give the same result. In particular, we show that the conditions are satisfied in the case of the random walk on graphs equipped with equitable partitions. We present several examples, which include the classical/quantum walks on Platonic solids. We discuss also relation of discrete-time classical/quantum walks on $N$-dimensional hypercube and the Ehrenfests urn model with $N$ particles. We apply our technique for of discrete-time walks on Cayley graphs of free groups. We also compare our results with those obtained using Cantero-Moral-Velazquez uniformization of unitary matrices.

Cutoff for generalised Bernoulli-Laplace urn models
We introduce a multi-colour multi-urn generalisation of the Bernoulli-Laplace urn model, consisting of $d$ urns, $m$ colours, and $dmn$ balls, with $dn$ balls of each colour and $mn$ balls in each urn. At each step, one ball is drawn uniformly at random from each urn, and the chosen balls are redistributed among the urns based on a permutation drawn from a distribution $μ$ on the symmetric group $S_d$. We study the mixing time of this Markov chain for fixed $m$, $d$, and $μ$, as $n \rightarrow \infty$. We show that there is cutoff whenever the chain on $[d]$ corresponding to the evolution of a single ball is irreducible, and that the same holds for a labeled version of the model. As an application, we also obtain partial results on cutoff for a card shuffling version of the model in which the cards are labeled and their ordering within each stack matters.

Normalized matching property for competing urn models
We study the competing urn model in which $m$ balls are placed independently into $n$ urns according to (possibly distinct) ball distributions. Kahn and Neiman (2010) showed that, under identical ball distributions, the induced urn measure has \emph{conditional negative association} property and asked whether this remains true without assuming identical distributions. We answer this in the affirmative by showing that the competing urn model satisfies the \emph{normalized matching property}. This, in turn, implies conditional negative association for the induced urn measure with non-identical ball distributions, resolving the question of Kahn and Neiman.

Gibbs partitions and lattice paths
This work is devoted to the analysis of a Gibbs partition model, also known as a composition scheme. We consider a natural new condition on the component weights. It leads to a new behavior for the total number of components. We discover a condensation phenomenon, producing a unique giant component comprising almost the entire mass. Additionally, we prove a point process limit describing the asymptotic size of the non-maximal components exhibiting a sublinear power-law growth. A particular motivation for our article stems from applications, ranging from simple random walks in the cube, over lattice paths models in the plane, pairs of directed random walks, over to urn models and card guessing games.

Limit Profile for the Bernoulli--Laplace Urn
We analyse the convergence to equilibrium of the Bernoulli--Laplace urn model: initially, one urn contains $k$ red balls and a second $n-k$ blue balls; in each step, a pair of balls is chosen uniform and their locations are switched. Cutoff is known to occur at $\tfrac12 n \log \min\{k, \sqrt n\}$ with window order $n$ whenever $1 \ll k \le \tfrac12 n$. We refine this by determining the limit profile: a function $Φ$ such that \[ d_\mathsf{TV}\bigl( \tfrac12 n \log \min\{k, \sqrt n\} + θn \bigr) \to Φ(θ) \quad\text{as}\quad n \to \infty \quad\text{for all}\quad θ\in \mathbb R. \] Our main technical contribution, of independent interest, approximates a rescaled chain by a diffusion on $\mathbb R$ when $k \gg \sqrt n$, and uses its explicit law as a Gaussian process.

On Pólya-Young urn models and growth processes
This work is devoted to Pólya-Young urns, a class of periodic Pólya urns of importance in the analysis of Young tableaux. We provide several extension of the previous results of Banderier, Marchal and Wallner [Ann. Prob. (2020)] on Pólya-Young urns and also generalize the previously studied model. We determine the limit law of the generalized model, involving the the local time of noise-reinforced Bessel processes. We also uncover a martingale structure, which leads directly to almost-sure convergence of the random variable of interest. This allows us to add second order asymptotics by providing a central limit theorem for the martingale tail sum, as well as a law of the iterated logarithm. We also turn to random vectors and obtain the limit law of Pólya-Young urns with multiple colors. Additionally, we introduce several growth processes and combinatorial objects, which are closely related to urn models. We define increasing trees with periodic immigration and we related the dynamics of the Pólya-Young urns to label-based parameters in such tree families. Furthermore, we discuss a generalization of Stirling permutations and obtain a bijection to increasing trees with periodic immigration. Finally, we introduce a chinese restaurant process with competition and relate it to increasing trees, as well as Pólya-Young urns.

Formal construction of some exchangeable structures
We show that exchangeable structures such as Polya urn model and Chinese restaurant process can be constructed from sets with a real number of elements. From this construction, the exchangeability of these structures becomes obvious and the calculations on them become extremely simple. Moreover, the usual calculations on these structures, which involve induction, integrals and Jacobian determinants, now can be done by simple combinatorial calculations.
Multivariate Dirichlet Moments and a Polychromatic Ewens Sampling Formula
We present an elementary non-recursive formula for the multivariate moments of the Dirichlet distribution on the standard simplex, in terms of the pattern inventory of the moments' exponents. We obtain analog formulas for the multivariate moments of the Dirichlet-Ferguson and Gamma measures. We further introduce a polychromatic analogue of Ewens sampling formula on colored integer partitions, discuss its relation with suitable extensions of Hoppe's urn model and of the Chinese restaurant process, and prove that it satisfies an adapted notion of consistency in the sense of Kingman.

Analysis of some exactly solvable diminishing urn models
We study several exactly solvable Polya-Eggenberger urn models with a \emph{diminishing} character, namely, balls of a specified color, say $x$ are completely drawn after a finite number of draws. The main quantity of interest here is the number of balls left when balls of color $x$ are completely removed. We consider several diminishing urns studied previously in the literature such as the pills problem, the cannibal urns and the OK Corral problem, and derive exact and limiting distributions. Our approach is based on solving recurrences via generating functions and partial differential equations.

Semi-random process without replacement
Published in Journal of Combinatorics, Vol. 14, No. 2 (2023), pp. 167-196 • View PublicationBIB
Semi-random processes involve an adaptive decision-maker, whose goal is to achieve some pre-determined objective in an online randomized environment. We introduce and study a semi-random multigraph process, which forms a no-replacement variant of the process that was introduced by Ben-Eliezer, Hefetz, Kronenberg, Parczyk, Shikhelman and Stojaković (2020). The process starts with an empty graph on the vertex set $[n]$. For every positive integers $q$ and $1\leq r\leq n$, in the $((q-1)n+r)$th round of the process, the decision-maker, called \emph{Builder}, is offered the vertex $π_q(r)$, where $π_1, π_2, \ldots$ is a sequence of permutations in $S_n$, chosen independently and uniformly at random. Builder then chooses an additional vertex (according to a strategy of his choice) and connects it by an edge to $π_q(r)$. For several natural graph properties, such as $k$-connectivity, minimum degree at least $k$, and building a given spanning graph (labeled or unlabeled), we determine the typical number of rounds Builder needs in order to construct a graph having the desired property. Along the way we introduce and analyze an urn model which may also have independent interest.

Some Double Sums Involving Ratios of Binomial Coefficients Arising From Urn Models
In this paper we discuss a class of double sums involving ratios of binomial coefficients. The sums are of the form \[ \sum_{j=0}^{n} \sum_{i=0}^j \frac{\binom{f_1(n)}{i}}{\binom{f_2(n)}{j}}\,c^{i-j}, \] where $f_1, f_2$ are functions of $n$. Such sums appear in the analyses of the Mabinogion urn and the Ehrenfest urn in probability. Using hypergeometric functions, we are able to simplify these sums, and in some cases express them in terms of the harmonic numbers.

Cutoff for the Bernoulli-Laplace urn model with $o(n)$ swaps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the mixing time of the $(n,k)$ Bernoulli--Laplace urn model, where $k\in\{0,1,\ldots,n\}$. Consider two urns, each containing $n$ balls, so that when combined they have precisely $n$ red balls and $n$ white balls. At each step of the process choose uniformly at random $k$ balls from the left urn and $k$ balls from the right urn and switch them simultaneously. We show that if $k=o(n)$, this Markov chain exhibits mixing time cutoff at $\frac{n}{4k}\log n$ and window of the order $\frac{n}{k}\log\log n$. This is an extension of a classical theorem of Diaconis and Shahshahani who treated the case $k=1$.

Shuffling large decks of cards and the Bernoulli-Laplace urn model
Published • View PublicationBIB
In card games, in casino games with multiple decks of cards and in cryptography, one is sometimes faced with the following problem: how can a human (as opposed to a computer) shuffle a large deck of cards? The procedure we study is to break the deck into several reasonably sized piles, shuffle each thoroughly, recombine the piles, do some simple deterministic operation, for instance a cut, and repeat. This process can also be seen as a generalised Bernoulli-Laplace urn model. We use coupling arguments and spherical function theory to derive upper and bounds on the mixing times of these Markov chains.

Two-color balanced affine urn models with multiple drawings II: large-index and triangular urns
This is the second part of a two-part investigation. We continue the study of a class of balanced urn schemes on balls of two colors (white and black). At each drawing, a sample of size $m\ge 1$ is drawn from the urn and ball addition rules are applied; the special case $m=1$ of sampling only a single ball coincides with ordinary balanced urn models. We consider these multiple drawings under sampling with or without replacement. For the class of affine conditional expected value, we study the number of white balls after $n$ steps. The affine class is parametrized by $Λ$, specified by the ratio of the two eigenvalues of a reduced ball replacement matrix and the sample size, leading to three different cases: small-index urns ($Λ\le \frac 1 2$, and the case $Λ= \frac 1 2$ is critical), large-index urns ($Λ> \frac 1 2$), and triangular urns. In Part I we derived a central limit theorem for small index urns, and proved almost-sure convergence for large index and triangular urn models. In the present paper (Part II), we continue the study of affiance urn schemes and study the moments of large-index urns and triangular urn models. We show moment convergence under suitable scaling and we also provide expressions for the moments.

The dominating colour of an infinite Pólya urn model
Published in J. Appl. Probab. Volume 53, Number 3 (2016), 914-924 • View PublicationBIB
We study a Pólya-type urn model defined as follows. Start at time 0 with a single ball of some colour. Then, at each time n>0, choose a ball from the urn uniformly at random. With probability 1/2<p<1, return the ball to the urn along with another ball of the same colour. With probability 1-p, recolour the ball to a new colour and then return it to the urn. This is equivalent to the supercritical case of a random graph model studied by Backhausz and Móri, and Thörnblad. We prove that, with probability 1, there is a dominating colour, in the sense that, after some random but finite time, there is a colour that always has the most number of balls. A crucial part of the proof is the analysis of an urn model with two colours, in which the observed ball is returned to the urn along with another ball of the same colour with probability p, and removed with probability 1-p. Our results here generalise a classical result about the Pólya urn model (which corresponds to p=1).

On the Likelihood of Single-Peaked Preferences
Published in Soc Choice Welf (2017) • View PublicationBIB
This paper contains an extensive combinatorial analysis of the single-peaked domain restriction and investigates the likelihood that an election is single-peaked. We provide a very general upper bound result for domain restrictions that can be defined by certain forbidden configurations. This upper bound implies that many domain restrictions (including the single-peaked restriction) are very unlikely to appear in a random election chosen according to the Impartial Culture assumption. For single-peaked elections, this upper bound can be refined and complemented by a lower bound that is asymptotically tight. In addition, we provide exact results for elections with few voters or candidates. Moreover, we consider the Pólya urn model and the Mallows model and obtain lower bounds showing that single-peakedness is considerably more likely to appear for certain parameterizations.

Two-colour balanced affine urn models with multiple drawings I: central limit theorems
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is a research endeavor in two parts. We study a class of balanced urn schemes on balls of two colours (say white and black). At each drawing, a sample of size $m\ge 1$ is drawn from the urn, and ball addition rules are applied. We consider these multiple drawings under sampling with or without replacement. We further classify ball addition matrices according to the structure of the expected value into affine and nonaffine classes. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a scheme to be in the affine subclass. For the affine subclass, we get explicit results for the expected value and second moment of the number of white balls after $n$ steps and an asymptotic expansion of the variance. Moreover, we uncover a martingale structure, amenable to a central limit theorem formulation. This unifies several earlier works focused on special cases of urn models with multiple drawings. The class is parametrized by $Λ$, specified by the ratio of the two eigenvalues of a "reduced" ball replacement matrix and the sample size. We categorize the class into small-index urns ($Λ<\frac 1 2$), critical-index urns ($Λ= \frac 1 2$), and large-index urns ($Λ> \frac 1 2$), and triangular urns. In the present paper (Part I), we obtain central limit theorems for small- and critical-index urns and prove almost-sure convergence for triangular and large-index urns. In a companion paper (Part II), we discuss the moment structure of large-index urns and triangular urns.
