Majorization Inequalities from Logarithmic Convexity
Majorization inequalities for symmetric polynomials have interested mathematicians for centuries, from the AM-GM inequality for two variables going back at least to Euclid, through classical results of Newton, Muirhead and Gantmacher, to more recent extensions to Schur polynomials and zonal spherical functions. These have been established case by case, with no unified approach. Although it is known that majorization inequalities follow from symmetry and convexity in the indexing partition, the difficulty of proving convexity in specific cases has left a number of outstanding conjectures inaccessible until now.
The key insight of this paper is that log-convexity provides both a more versatile tool and a unifying principle. It implies convexity and hence majorization, and it is preserved under multiplication and weighted averaging, making it well suited to inductive arguments in a wide range of settings. Using this idea, we prove new majorization inequalities for Macdonald polynomials, Jack polynomials and Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions, unifying existing results and resolving several open conjectures.
Symplectic Hecke eigenbases from Ehrhart polynomials
For $n\in\mathbb{N}$ and $\ell\in\{0,1,\dots,n\}$, we consider the function extracting the $\ell$th coefficient of the Ehrhart polynomials of lattice polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$. These functions form a basis of the space of unimodular invariant valuations. We show that, in even dimensions, these functions are in fact simultaneous symplectic Hecke eigenfunctions. We leverage this and apply the theory of spherical functions and their associated zeta functions to prove analytic, asymptotic, and combinatorial results about the arithmetic functions averaging $\ell$th Ehrhart coefficients.
Homogeneous spaces of semidirect products and finite Gelfand pairs
Let $K\leq H$ be two finite groups and let $C\leq A$ be two finite abelian groups, with $H$ acting on $A$ as a group of isomorphisms admitting $C$ as a $K$-invariant subgroup. We study the homogeneous space $X\coloneqq\left(H\ltimes A\right)/\left(K\ltimes C\right)$ and determine the decomposition of the permutation representation of $H\ltimes A$ acting on $X$. We then characterize when this is multiplicity-free, that is, when $\left(H\ltimes A,K\ltimes C\right)$ is a Gelfand pair. If this is the case, we explicitly calculate the corresponding spherical functions. From our general construction and related analysis, we recover Dunkl's results on the $q$-analog of the nonbinary Johnson scheme.
Bivariate $Q$-polynomial structures for the nonbinary Johnson scheme and the association scheme obtained from attenuated spaces
The study of $P$-polynomial association schemes (distance-regular graphs) and $Q$-polynomial association schemes, and in particular $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association schemes, has been a central theme not only in the theory of association schemes but also in the whole study of algebraic combinatorics in general. Leonard's theorem (1982) says that the spherical functions (or the character tables) of $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association schemes are described by Askey-Wilson orthogonal polynomials or their relatives. These polynomials are one-variable orthogonal polynomials. It seems that the new attempt to define and study higher rank $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association schemes had been hoped for, but had gotten only limited success. The first very successful attempt was initiated recently by Bernard-Crampé-d'Andecy-Vinet-Zaimi [arXiv:2212.10824], and then followed by Bannai-Kurihara-Zhao-Zhu [arXiv:2305.00707]. The general theory and some explicit examples of families of higher rank (multivariate) $P$- and/or $Q$-polynomial association schemes have been obtained there. The main purpose of the present paper is to prove that some important families of association schemes are shown to be bivariate $Q$-polynomial. Namely, we show that all the nonbinary Johnson association schemes and all the attenuated space association schemes are bivariate $Q$-polynomial. It should be noted that the parameter restrictions needed in the previous papers are completely lifted in this paper. Our proofs are done by explicitly calculating the Krein parameters of these association schemes. At the end, we mention some speculations and indications of what we can expect in the future study.

In the previous paper [25], Stolarsky's invariance principle, known for point distributions on the Euclidean spheres [27], has been extended to the real, complex, and quaternionic projective spaces and the octonionic projective plane. Geometric features of these spaces as well as their models in terms of Jordan algebras have been used very essentially in the proof. In the present paper, we give a new pure analytic proof of the extended Stolarsky's invariance principle, relying on the theory of spherical functions on compact symmetric Riemannian manifolds of rank one.
Generalized characters of the generalized symmetric group
We prove that $(\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n \times \mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}, \text{diag} (\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}) )$ is a symmetric Gelfand pair, where $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n$ is the wreath product of the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_k$ with the symmetric group $\mathcal{S}_n.$ The proof is based on the study of the $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}$-conjugacy classes of $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n.$ We define the generalized characters of $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n$ using the zonal spherical functions of $(\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n \times \mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}, \text{diag} (\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}) ).$ We show that these generalized characters have properties similar to usual characters. A Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for the generalized characters of the hyperoctahedral group is presented. The generalized characters of the symmetric group were first studied by Strahov in [7].

Let $S_k \times S_{n-k}$ be a maximal Young subgroup of the symmetric group $S_n$. We introduce a basis ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$ for the coset space $S_n/S_k \times S_{n-k}$ that is naturally parametrized by the set of standard Young tableaux with $n$ boxes, at most two rows, and at most $k$ boxes in the second row. The basis ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$ has positivity properties that resemble those of a root system, and there is a composition series of the coset space in which each term is spanned by the basis elements that it contains. We prove that the spherical functions of the associated Gelfand pair are nonnegative linear combinations of the ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$.

Recent works have sought to realize certain families of orthogonal, symmetric polynomials as partition functions of well-chosen classes of solvable lattice models. Many of these use Boltzmann weights arising from the trigonometric six-vertex model $R$-matrix (or generalizations or specializations of these weights). In this paper, we seek new variants of bosonic models on lattices designed for type B/C root systems, whose partition functions match the zonal spherical function in type C. Under general assumptions, we find that this is possible for all highest weights in rank $2$ and $3$, but not for higher rank.

A generalization of highly symmetric frames is presented by considering also projective stabilizers of frame vectors. This allows construction of highly symmetric line systems and study of highly symmetric frames in a more unified manner. Construction of highly symmetric line systems involves computation of twisted spherical functions associated with finite groups. Further generalizations include definition of highly symmetric systems of subspaces. We give several examples which illustrate our approach including 3 new kissing configurations which improve lower bounds on the kissing number in $d=10,11,14$ to 510, 592 and 1932 respectively.
Relating three combinatorial formulas for type $A$ Whittaker functions
In this work we study the relationship between several combinatorial formulas for type $A$ spherical Whittaker functions. These are spherical functions on $p$-adic groups, which arise in the theory of automorphic forms. They depend on a parameter $t$, and are a specialization of Macdonald polynomials, and further specialize to Schur polynomials upon setting $t=0$. There are three types of formulas for these polynomials. The first formula is in terms of so-called alcove walks, works in arbitrary Lie type, and is derived from the Ram-Yip formula for Macdonald polynomials. The second one is in terms of certain fillings of Young diagrams, and is derived from, or is analogous to the Haglund-Haiman-Loehr formula for Macdonald polynomials. The third formula is in terms of the classical semistandard Young tableaux. We study the way in which each such formula is obtained from the previous one by combining terms $-$ a phenomenon called compression. No such results existed in the case of Whittaker functions.
Explicit construction of exact unitary designs

The purpose of this paper is to give explicit constructions of unitary $t$-designs in the unitary group $U(d)$ for all $t$ and $d$. It seems that the explicit constructions were so far known only for very special cases. Here explicit construction means that the entries of the unitary matrices are given by the values of elementary functions at the root of some given polynomials. We will discuss what are the best such unitary $4$-designs in $U(4)$ obtained by these methods.
Indeed we give an inductive construction of designs on compact groups by using Gelfand pairs $(G,K)$. Note that $(U(n),U(m) \times U(n-m))$ is a Gelfand pair. By using the zonal spherical functions for $(G,K)$, we can construct designs on $G$ from designs on $K$.
We remark that our proofs use the representation theory of compact groups crucially. We also remark that this method can be applied to the orthogonal groups $O(d)$, and thus provides another explicit construction of spherical $t$-designs on the $d$ dimensional sphere $S^{d-1}$ by the induction on $d$.

Majorization is a partial order on real vectors which plays an important role in a variety of subjects, ranging from algebra and combinatorics to probability and statistics. In this paper, we consider a generalized notion of majorization associated to an arbitrary root system $Φ,$ and show that it admits a natural characterization in terms of the values of spherical functions on any Riemannian symmetric space with restricted root system $Φ.$

We consider the algebraic combinatorics of the set of injections from a $k$-element set to an $n$-element set. In particular, we give a new combinatorial formula for the spherical functions of the Gelfand pair $(S_k \times S_n, \text{diag}(S_k) \times S_{n-k})$. We use this combinatorial formula to give new Delsarte linear programming bounds on the size of codes over injections.

The characteristic map for the symmetric group is an isomorphism relating the representation theory of the symmetric group to symmetric functions. An analogous isomorphism is constructed for the symmetric space of symplectic forms over a finite field, with the spherical functions being sent to Macdonald polynomials with parameters $(q,q^2)$. An analogue of parabolic induction is interpreted as a certain multiplication of symmetric functions. Applications are given to Schur-positivity of skew Macdonald polynomials with parameters $(q,q^2)$ as well as combinatorial formulas for spherical function values.
Pieri Integral Formula and Asymptotics of Jack Unitary Characters

We introduce Jack (unitary) characters and prove two kinds of formulas that are suitable for their asymptotics, as the lengths of the signatures that parametrize them go to infinity. The first kind includes several integral representations for Jack characters of one variable. The second identity we prove is the Pieri integral formula for Jack characters which, in a sense, is dual to the well known Pieri rule for Jack polynomials. The Pieri integral formula can also be seen as a functional equation for irreducible spherical functions of virtual Gelfand pairs.
As an application of our formulas, we study the asymptotics of Jack characters as the corresponding signatures grow to infinity in the sense of Vershik-Kerov. We prove the existence of a small $δ> 0$ such that the Jack characters of $m$ variables have a uniform limit on the $δ$-neighborhood of the $m$-dimensional torus. Our result specializes to a theorem of Okounkov and Olshanski.
Point distribution in compact metric spaces, III. Two-point homogeneous spaces
We consider point distributions in compact connected two-point homogeneous spaces (Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank one). All such spaces are known, they are the spheres in the Euclidean spaces, the real, complex and quaternionic projective spaces and the octonionic projective plane. Our concern is with discrepancies of distributions in metric balls and sums of pairwise distances between points of distributions in such spaces.
Using the geometric features of two-point spaces, we show that Stolarsky's invariance principle, well-known for the Euclidean spheres, can be extended to all projective spaces and the octonionic projective plane (Theorem 2.1 and Corollary 2.1). We obtain the spherical function expansions for discrepancies and sums of distances (Theorem 9.1). Relying on these expansions, we prove in all such spaces the best possible bounds for quadratic discrepancies and sums of pairwise distances (Theorem 2.2). Applications to $t$-designs on such two-point homogeneous spaces are also considered. It is shown that the optimal $t$-designs meet the best possible bounds for quadratic discrepancies and sums of pairwise distances. (Corollaries 3.1 and 3.2).
Upper bounds for $s$-distance sets and equiangular lines

The set of points in a metric space is called an $s$-distance set if pairwise distances between these points admit only $s$ distinct values. Two-distance spherical sets with the set of scalar products $\{α, -α\}$, $α\in[0,1)$, are called equiangular. The problem of determining the maximum size of $s$-distance sets in various spaces has a long history in mathematics. We suggest a new method of bounding the size of an $s$-distance set in compact two-point homogeneous spaces via zonal spherical functions. This method allows us to prove that the maximum size of a spherical two-distance set in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 7$, is $\frac{n(n+1)}2$ with possible exceptions for some $n=(2k+1)^2-3$, $k \in \mathbb{N}$. We also prove the universal upper bound $\sim \frac 2 3 n a^2$ for equiangular sets with $α=\frac 1 a$ and, employing this bound, prove a new upper bound on the size of equiangular sets in all dimensions. Finally, we classify all equiangular sets reaching this new bound.
Shuffling large decks of cards and the Bernoulli-Laplace urn model

In card games, in casino games with multiple decks of cards and in cryptography, one is sometimes faced with the following problem: how can a human (as opposed to a computer) shuffle a large deck of cards? The procedure we study is to break the deck into several reasonably sized piles, shuffle each thoroughly, recombine the piles, do some simple deterministic operation, for instance a cut, and repeat. This process can also be seen as a generalised Bernoulli-Laplace urn model. We use coupling arguments and spherical function theory to derive upper and bounds on the mixing times of these Markov chains.

We generalise some well known properties of irreducible characters of finite groups to zonal spherical functions of Gelfand pairs. This leads to a Frobenius formula for Gelfand pairs. For a given Gelfand pair, the structure coefficients of its associated double-class algebra can be written in terms of zonal spherical functions. This is a generalisation of the Frobenius formula which writes the structure coefficients of the center of a finite group algebra in terms of irreducible characters.
Polynomialité des coefficients de structure des algèbres de doubles-classes
In this thesis we studied the structure coefficients and especially their dependence on $n$ in the case of a sequence of double-class algebras. The first chapter is dedicated to the study of the structure coefficients in the general cases of centers of group algebras and double-class algebras. We recall in it the representation theory of finite groups and its link with structure coefficients. We show also that the study of the structure coefficients of double-class algebras is related to the theory of Gelfand pairs and zonal spherical functions by giving, in the case of Gelfand pairs, a theorem similar to that of Frobenius which writes the structure coefficients of the double-class algebra associated to a Gelfand pair in terms of zonal spherical functions. In the second chapter, we recall the Farahat and Higman's theorem about the polynomiality of the structure coefficients of the center of the symmetric group algebra as well as the Ivanov and Kerov's approach to prove this theorem. We give a combinatorial proof to the polynomiality property of the structure coefficients of the Hecke algebra of the pair $(S_{2n},B_n)$ in the third chapter. Our proof uses a universal algebra which projects on the Hecke algebra of $(S_{2n}, B_n)$ for each $n.$ We show that this universal algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of $2$-shifted symmetric functions. In the fourth and last chapter we build a general framework which gives us the form of the structure coefficients in the case of a sequence of double-class algebras. This framework implies the polynomiality property of the structure coefficients of both the center of the symmetric group algebra and the Hecke algebra of $(S_{2n},B_n).$ In addition, we give a polynomiality property for the structure coefficients of both the center of the hyperoctahedral group algebra and the double-class algebra of $diag(S_{n-1})$ in $S_n\times S_{n-1}^{opp}.$
