Almost Commutative Terwilliger Algebras II: Strong Gelfand Pairs
Terwilliger algebras are a subalgebra of a matrix algebra constructed from an association scheme. In 2010, Tanaka defined what it means for a Terwilliger algebra to be almost commutative and gave five equivalent conditions for a Terwilliger algebra to be almost commutative. In this paper we look at Terwilliger algebras coming from strong Gelfand pairs $(G,H)$ for a finite group $G$. From such a pair, one can create a Terwilliger algebra using the Schur ring of $H-$classes of elements of $G$. We determine all strong Gelfand pairs that give an Almost Commutative Terwilliger algebra.
On the association scheme of perfect matchings and their designs
We investigate generalisations of 1-factorisations and hyperfactorisations of the complete graph $K_{2n}$. We show that they are special subsets of the association scheme obtained from the Gelfand pair $(S_{2n},S_2 \wr S_n)$. This unifies and extends results by Cameron (1976) and gives rise to new existence and non-existence results. Our methods involve working in the group algebra $\mathbb{C}[S_{2n}]$ and using the representation theory of $S_{2n}$.
Strong Gelfand Pairs of the Symplectic Group $\boldsymbol{\rm Sp}_4(q)$ where $q$ is even
A strong Gelfand pair $(G,H)$ is a finite group $G$ together with a subgroup $H$ such that every irreducible character of $H$ induces to a multiplicity-free character of $G$. We classify the strong Gelfand pairs of the finite symplectic groups ${\rm Sp}_4(q)$ for even $q$.
Homogeneous spaces of semidirect products and finite Gelfand pairs
Let $K\leq H$ be two finite groups and let $C\leq A$ be two finite abelian groups, with $H$ acting on $A$ as a group of isomorphisms admitting $C$ as a $K$-invariant subgroup. We study the homogeneous space $X\coloneqq\left(H\ltimes A\right)/\left(K\ltimes C\right)$ and determine the decomposition of the permutation representation of $H\ltimes A$ acting on $X$. We then characterize when this is multiplicity-free, that is, when $\left(H\ltimes A,K\ltimes C\right)$ is a Gelfand pair. If this is the case, we explicitly calculate the corresponding spherical functions. From our general construction and related analysis, we recover Dunkl's results on the $q$-analog of the nonbinary Johnson scheme.
Generalized characters of the generalized symmetric group
We prove that $(\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n \times \mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}, \text{diag} (\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}) )$ is a symmetric Gelfand pair, where $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n$ is the wreath product of the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_k$ with the symmetric group $\mathcal{S}_n.$ The proof is based on the study of the $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}$-conjugacy classes of $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n.$ We define the generalized characters of $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n$ using the zonal spherical functions of $(\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n \times \mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}, \text{diag} (\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}) ).$ We show that these generalized characters have properties similar to usual characters. A Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for the generalized characters of the hyperoctahedral group is presented. The generalized characters of the symmetric group were first studied by Strahov in [7].

Let $S_k \times S_{n-k}$ be a maximal Young subgroup of the symmetric group $S_n$. We introduce a basis ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$ for the coset space $S_n/S_k \times S_{n-k}$ that is naturally parametrized by the set of standard Young tableaux with $n$ boxes, at most two rows, and at most $k$ boxes in the second row. The basis ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$ has positivity properties that resemble those of a root system, and there is a composition series of the coset space in which each term is spanned by the basis elements that it contains. We prove that the spherical functions of the associated Gelfand pair are nonnegative linear combinations of the ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$.

Several combinatorial actions of the affine Weyl group of type $\widetilde{C}_{n}$ on triangulations, trees, words and permutations are compared. Addressing a question of David Vogan, we show that, modulo a natural involution, these permutation representations are multiplicity-free. The proof uses a general construction of Gelfand subgroups in the affine Weyl groups of types $\widetilde{C}_{n}$ and $\widetilde{B}_n$.
Explicit construction of exact unitary designs

The purpose of this paper is to give explicit constructions of unitary $t$-designs in the unitary group $U(d)$ for all $t$ and $d$. It seems that the explicit constructions were so far known only for very special cases. Here explicit construction means that the entries of the unitary matrices are given by the values of elementary functions at the root of some given polynomials. We will discuss what are the best such unitary $4$-designs in $U(4)$ obtained by these methods.
Indeed we give an inductive construction of designs on compact groups by using Gelfand pairs $(G,K)$. Note that $(U(n),U(m) \times U(n-m))$ is a Gelfand pair. By using the zonal spherical functions for $(G,K)$, we can construct designs on $G$ from designs on $K$.
We remark that our proofs use the representation theory of compact groups crucially. We also remark that this method can be applied to the orthogonal groups $O(d)$, and thus provides another explicit construction of spherical $t$-designs on the $d$ dimensional sphere $S^{d-1}$ by the induction on $d$.

It is well known that the pair $(\mathcal{S}_n,\mathcal{S}_{n-1})$ is a Gelfand pair where $\mathcal{S}_n$ is the symmetric group on $n$ elements. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a finite group then $(G\wr \mathcal{S}_n, G\wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}),$ where $G\wr \mathcal{S}_n$ is the wreath product of $G$ by $\mathcal{S}_n,$ is a Gelfand pair if and only if $G$ is abelian.

We show that the $\mathcal{H}_{n-1}$-conjugacy classes of $\mathcal{H}_n,$ where $\mathcal{H}_n$ is the hyperoctahedral group on $2n$ elements, are indexed by marked bipartitions of $n.$ This will lead us to prove that $(\mathcal{H}_n\times \mathcal{H}_{n-1},diag (\mathcal{H}_{n-1}))$ is a symmetric Gelfand pair and that the induced representation $1_{diag (\mathcal{H}_{n-1})}^{\mathcal{H}_n\times \mathcal{H}_{n-1}}$ is multiplicity free.

We consider the algebraic combinatorics of the set of injections from a $k$-element set to an $n$-element set. In particular, we give a new combinatorial formula for the spherical functions of the Gelfand pair $(S_k \times S_n, \text{diag}(S_k) \times S_{n-k})$. We use this combinatorial formula to give new Delsarte linear programming bounds on the size of codes over injections.
A Tight Lower Bound for Non-coherent Index Erasure
The Index-Erasure problem is a quantum state generation problem that asks a quantum computer to prepare a uniform superposition over the image of an injective function given by an oracle. We prove a tight $Ω(\sqrt{n})$ lower bound on the quantum query complexity of the non-coherent case of the problem, where, in addition to preparing the required superposition, the algorithm is allowed to leave the ancillary memory in an arbitrary function-dependent state. This resolves an open question of Ambainis et al., who gave a tight bound for the coherent case, the case where the ancillary memory must return to its initial state.
To prove our main result, we first extend the automorphism principle of Høyer et al. to the general adversary method of Lee et al. for state generation problems, which allows one to exploit the symmetries of these problems to lower bound their quantum query complexity. Using this method, we establish a strong connection between the quantum query complexity of non-coherent symmetric state generation problems and the Krein parameters of an association scheme defined on injective functions. In particular, we use the spherical harmonics a finite symmetric Gelfand pair associated with the space of injective functions to obtain asymptotic bounds on certain Krein parameters, from which the main result follows.
Stability for Intersecting Families of Perfect Matchings

A family of perfect matchings of $K_{2n}$ is $intersecting$ if any two of its members have an edge in common. It is known that if $\mathcal{F}$ is family of intersecting perfect matchings of $K_{2n}$, then $|\mathcal{F}| \leq (2n-3)!!$ and if equality holds, then $\mathcal{F} = \mathcal{F}_{ij}$ where $ \mathcal{F}_{ij}$ is the family of all perfect matchings of $K_{2n}$ that contain some fixed edge $ij$. In this note, we show that the extremal families are stable, namely, that for any $ε\in (0,1/\sqrt{e})$ and $n > n(ε)$, any intersecting family of perfect matchings of size greater than $(1 - 1/\sqrt{e} + ε)(2n-3)!!$ is contained in $\mathcal{F}_{ij}$ for some edge $ij$. The proof uses the Gelfand pair $(S_{2n},S_2 \wr S_n)$ along with an isoperimetric method of Ellis.
Pieri Integral Formula and Asymptotics of Jack Unitary Characters

We introduce Jack (unitary) characters and prove two kinds of formulas that are suitable for their asymptotics, as the lengths of the signatures that parametrize them go to infinity. The first kind includes several integral representations for Jack characters of one variable. The second identity we prove is the Pieri integral formula for Jack characters which, in a sense, is dual to the well known Pieri rule for Jack polynomials. The Pieri integral formula can also be seen as a functional equation for irreducible spherical functions of virtual Gelfand pairs.
As an application of our formulas, we study the asymptotics of Jack characters as the corresponding signatures grow to infinity in the sense of Vershik-Kerov. We prove the existence of a small $δ> 0$ such that the Jack characters of $m$ variables have a uniform limit on the $δ$-neighborhood of the $m$-dimensional torus. Our result specializes to a theorem of Okounkov and Olshanski.

We describe a method, based on the theory of Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomials, for proving bounded Littlewood identities. Our approach provides an alternative to Macdonald's partial fraction technique and results in the first examples of bounded Littlewood identities for Macdonald polynomials. These identities, which take the form of decomposition formulas for Macdonald polynomials of type $(R,S)$ in terms of ordinary Macdonald polynomials, are $q,t$-analogues of known branching formulas for characters of the symplectic, orthogonal and special orthogonal groups. In the classical limit, our method implies that MacMahon's famous ex-conjecture for the generating function of symmetric plane partitions in a box follows from the identification of $(\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R}),\mathrm{O}(n))$ as a Gelfand pair. As further applications, we obtain combinatorial formulas for characters of affine Lie algebras; Rogers-Ramanujan identities for affine Lie algebras, complementing recent results of Griffin et al.; and quadratic transformation formulas for Kaneko--Macdonald-type basic hypergeometric series.

We generalise some well known properties of irreducible characters of finite groups to zonal spherical functions of Gelfand pairs. This leads to a Frobenius formula for Gelfand pairs. For a given Gelfand pair, the structure coefficients of its associated double-class algebra can be written in terms of zonal spherical functions. This is a generalisation of the Frobenius formula which writes the structure coefficients of the center of a finite group algebra in terms of irreducible characters.
Polynomialité des coefficients de structure des algèbres de doubles-classes
In this thesis we studied the structure coefficients and especially their dependence on $n$ in the case of a sequence of double-class algebras. The first chapter is dedicated to the study of the structure coefficients in the general cases of centers of group algebras and double-class algebras. We recall in it the representation theory of finite groups and its link with structure coefficients. We show also that the study of the structure coefficients of double-class algebras is related to the theory of Gelfand pairs and zonal spherical functions by giving, in the case of Gelfand pairs, a theorem similar to that of Frobenius which writes the structure coefficients of the double-class algebra associated to a Gelfand pair in terms of zonal spherical functions. In the second chapter, we recall the Farahat and Higman's theorem about the polynomiality of the structure coefficients of the center of the symmetric group algebra as well as the Ivanov and Kerov's approach to prove this theorem. We give a combinatorial proof to the polynomiality property of the structure coefficients of the Hecke algebra of the pair $(S_{2n},B_n)$ in the third chapter. Our proof uses a universal algebra which projects on the Hecke algebra of $(S_{2n}, B_n)$ for each $n.$ We show that this universal algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of $2$-shifted symmetric functions. In the fourth and last chapter we build a general framework which gives us the form of the structure coefficients in the case of a sequence of double-class algebras. This framework implies the polynomiality property of the structure coefficients of both the center of the symmetric group algebra and the Hecke algebra of $(S_{2n},B_n).$ In addition, we give a polynomiality property for the structure coefficients of both the center of the hyperoctahedral group algebra and the double-class algebra of $diag(S_{n-1})$ in $S_n\times S_{n-1}^{opp}.$
Erdős-Ko-Rado for Perfect Matchings

A perfect matching of a complete graph $K_{2n}$ is a 1-regular subgraph that contains all the vertices. Two perfect matchings intersect if they share an edge. It is known that if $\mathcal{F}$ is family of intersecting perfect matchings of $K_{2n}$, then $|\mathcal{F}| \leq (2(n-1) - 1)!!$ and if equality holds, then $\mathcal{F} = \mathcal{F}_{ij}$ where $ \mathcal{F}_{ij}$ is the family of all perfect matchings of $K_{2n}$ that contain some fixed edge $ij$. We give a short algebraic proof of this result, resolving a question of Godsil and Meagher. Along the way, we show that if a family $\mathcal{F}$ is non-Hamiltonian, that is, $m \cup m' \not \cong C_{2n}$ for any $m,m' \in \mathcal{F}$, then $|\mathcal{F}| \leq (2(n-1) - 1)!!$ and this bound is met with equality if and only if $\mathcal{F} = \mathcal{F}_{ij}$. Our results make ample use of a somewhat understudied symmetric commutative association scheme arising from the Gelfand pair $(S_{2n},S_2 \wr S_n)$. We give an exposition of a few new interesting objects that live in this scheme as they pertain to our results.

We construct different classes of lumpings for a family of Markov chain products which reflect the structure of a given finite poset. We use essentially combinatorial methods. We prove that, for such a product, every lumping can be obtained from the action of a suitable subgroup of the generalized wreath product of symmetric groups, acting on the underlying poset block structure, if and only if the poset defining the Markov process is totally ordered, and one takes the uniform Markov operator in each factor state space. Finally we show that, when the state space is a homogeneous space associated with a Gelfand pair, the spectral analysis of the corresponding lumped Markov chain is completely determined by the decomposition of the group action into irreducible submodules.
Spectra of Symmetrized Shuffling Operators
(Abridged abstract) For a finite real reflection group W and a W-orbit O of flats in its reflection arrangement---or equivalently a conjugacy class of its parabolic subgroups---we introduce a statistic on elements of W. We then study the operator of right-multiplication within the group algebra of W by the element whose coefficients are given by this statistic.
We reinterpret the operators geometrically in terms of the arrangement of reflecting hyperplanes for W. We show that they are self-adjoint and positive semidefinite. via two explicit factorizations into a symmetrized form A^t A. In one such factorization, A is a generalization of the projection of a simplex onto the linear ordering polytope. In the other factorization, A is the transition matrix for one of the well-studied Bidigare-Hanlon-Rockmore random walks on the chambers of an arrangement.
We study the family of operators in which O is the conjugacy classes of Young subgroups of type (k,1^{n-k}). A special case within this family is the operator corresponding to random-to-random shuffling. We show in a purely enumerative fashion that these operators pairwise commute. We furthermore conjecture that they have integer spectrum, generalizing a conjecture of Uyemura-Reyes for the case k=n-1.
We use representation theory to show that if O is a conjugacy class of rank one parabolics in W, the corresponding operator has integer spectrum. Our proof makes use of an (apparently) new family of twisted Gelfand pairs for W.
We also study the family of operators in which O is the conjugacy classes of Young subgroups of type (2^k,1^{n-2k}). Here the construction of a Gelfand model for the symmetric group shows that these operators pairwise commute and that they have integer spectrum.
For the symmetric group, we conjecture that apart from the two commuting families above, no other pair of operators of this form commutes.
