Reciprocity of Skew Hall-Littlewood-Schubert Series
Carnevale, Schein and Voll proved self-reciprocity of the generalized Igusa functions, and Maglione and Voll did the same for the Hall-Littlewood-Schubert series. We introduce a simultaneous generalization and refinement of these two rational functions, and prove that it satisfies a self-reciprocity property. This answers a problem posed by Maglione and Voll. Our method of proof is elementary, avoiding the use of $p$-adic integration.
Conjugating full cycles by adjacent transpositions: diameter and sorting time
We establish upper and lower bounds on the maximal number of steps needed to transform a cyclic permutation to the canonical cyclic permutation using conjugation by adjacent transpositions, and on the diameter of the underlying Schreier graph.
Asymptotics of higher Lie characters
Higher Lie characters form a distinguished family of symmetric group characters, which appear in many areas of algebra and combinatorics. An old open problem of Thrall is to decompose them into irreducibles. We propose a novel asymptotic approach to this problem, showing that many families of higher Lie characters tend to be proportional to the regular character. In particular, a random higher Lie character tends, in probability, to be proportional to the regular character.
Circular sorting
We determine the maximal number of steps required to sort $n$ labeled points on a circle by adjacent swaps. Lower bounds for sorting by all swaps, not necessarily adjacent, are given as well.
Descent set distribution for permutations with cycles of only odd or only even lengths
It is known that the number of permutations in the symmetric group $S_{2n}$ with cycles of odd lengths only is equal to the number of permutations with cycles of even lengths only. We prove a refinement of this equality, involving descent sets: the number of permutations in $S_{2n}$ with a prescribed descent set and all cycles of odd lengths is equal to the number of permutations with the complementary descent set and all cycles of even lengths. There is also a variant for $S_{2n+1}$. The proof uses generating functions for character values and applies a new identity on higher Lie characters.

We prove that, for any integer $k$, the $k$-th root enumerator in the classical Weyl group of type $D$ is a proper character. The proof uses higher Lie characters of type $B$.

A new descent set statistic on involutions, defined geometrically via their interpretation as matchings, is introduced in this paper, and shown to be equi-distributed with the standard one. This concept is then applied to construct explicit cyclic descent extensions on involutions, standard Young tableaux and Motzkin paths. Schur-positivity of the associated quasisymmetric functions follows.

A character identity which relates irreducible character values of the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$ to those of the symmetric group $S_{2n}$ was recently proved by Lübeck and Prasad. Their proof is algebraic and involves Lie theory. We present a short combinatorial proof of this identity, as well as a generalization to other wreath products.

Several combinatorial actions of the affine Weyl group of type $\widetilde{C}_{n}$ on triangulations, trees, words and permutations are compared. Addressing a question of David Vogan, we show that, modulo a natural involution, these permutation representations are multiplicity-free. The proof uses a general construction of Gelfand subgroups in the affine Weyl groups of types $\widetilde{C}_{n}$ and $\widetilde{B}_n$.
Higher Lie characters and cyclic descent extension on conjugacy classes

A now-classical cyclic extension of the descent set of a permutation has been introduced by Klyachko and Cellini. Following a recent axiomatic approach to this notion, it is natural to ask which sets of permutations admit such an extension.
The main result of this paper is a complete answer in the case of conjucay classes of permutations. It is shown that the conjugacy class of cycle type $λ$ has such an extension if and only if $λ$ is not of the form $(r^s)$ for some square-free $r$. The proof involves a detailed study of hook constituents in higher Lie characters.
Cyclic quasi-symmetric functions

The ring of cyclic quasi-symmetric functions and its non-Escher subring are introduced in this paper. A natural basis consists of fundamental cyclic quasi-symmetric functions; for the non-Escher subring they arise as toric $P$-partition enumerators, for toric posets $P$ with a total cyclic order. The associated structure constants are determined by cyclic shuffles of permutations. We then prove the following positivity phenomenon: for every non-hook shape $λ$, the coefficients in the expansion of the Schur function $s_λ$ in terms of fundamental cyclic quasi-symmetric functions are nonnegative. The proof relies on the existence of a cyclic descent map on the standard Young tableaux (SYT) of shape $λ$. The theory has applications to the enumeration of cyclic shuffles and SYT by cyclic descents.
On the cone of $f$-vectors of cubical polytopes
What is the minimal closed cone containing all $f$-vectors of cubical $d$-polytopes? We construct cubical polytopes showing that this cone, expressed in the cubical $g$-vector coordinates, contains the nonnegative $g$-orthant, thus verifying one direction of the Cubical Generalized Lower Bound Conjecture of Babson, Billera and Chan. Our polytopes also show that a natural cubical analogue of the simplicial Generalized Lower Bound Theorem does not hold.
Cyclic descents for near-hook and two-row shapes
A notion of cyclic descents on standard Young tableaux (SYT) of rectangular shape was introduced by Rhoades, and extended to certain skew shapes by the last two authors. The cyclic descent set restricts to the usual descent set when the largest value is ignored, and has the property that the number of SYT of a given shape with a given cyclic descent set $D$ is invariant under cyclic shifts of the entries of $D$. Following these results, the existence of cyclic descent sets for standard Young tableaux of any skew shape other than a ribbon was conjectured by the authors, and recently proved by Adin, Reiner and Roichman. Unfortunately, the proof does not provide a natural definition of the cyclic descent set for a specific tableau.
In this paper we explicitly describe cyclic descent sets and resulting generating functions for SYT of (possibly skew) shapes which either have exactly two rows or are near-hooks, i.e., are one cell away from a hook. Our definition provides a constructive combinatorial proof of the existence of cyclic descent sets for these shapes, and coincides with that of Rhoades for two-row rectangular shapes. We also show that cyclic descent sets for near-hook shaped tableaux are unique.

Gessel conjectured that the two-sided Eulerian polynomial, recording the common distribution of the descent number of a permutation and that of its inverse, has non-negative integer coefficients when expanded in terms of the gamma basis. This conjecture has been proved recently by Lin.
We conjecture that an analogous statement holds for simple permutations, and use the substitution decomposition tree of a permutation (by repeated inflation) to show that this would imply the Gessel-Lin result. We provide supporting evidence for this stronger conjecture.

The notion of descent set, for permutations as well as for standard Young tableaux (SYT), is classical. Cellini introduced a natural notion of {\em cyclic descent set} for permutations, and Rhoades introduced such a notion for SYT --- but only for rectangular shapes. In this work we define {\em cyclic extensions} of descent sets in a general context, and prove existence and essential uniqueness for SYT of almost all shapes. The proof applies nonnegativity properties of Postnikov's toric Schur polynomials, providing a new interpretation of certain Gromov-Witten invariants.

The block number of a permutation is the maximal number of components in its expression as a direct sum. We show that, for $321$-avoiding permutations, the set of left-to-right maxima has the same distribution when the block number is assumed to be $k$ as when the last descent of the inverse is assumed to be at position $n - k$. This result is analogous to the Foata-Schützenberger equi-distribution theorem, and implies that the quasi-symmetric generating function of descent set over $321$-avoiding permutations with a prescribed number of blocks is Schur-positive.

A general setting to study a certain type of formulas, expressing characters of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ explicitly in terms of descent sets of combinatorial objects, has been developed by two of the authors. This theory is further investigated in this paper and extended to the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$. Key ingredients are a new formula for the irreducible characters of $B_n$, the signed quasisymmetric functions introduced by Poirier, and a new family of matrices of Walsh--Hadamard type. Applications include formulas for natural $B_n$-actions on coinvariant and exterior algebras and on the top homology of a certain poset in terms of the combinatorics of various classes of signed permutations, as well as a $B_n$-analogue of an equidistribution theorem of Désarménien and Wachs.

A new family of asymmetric matrices of Walsh-Hadamard type is introduced. We study their properties and, in particular, compute their determinants and discuss their eigenvalues. The invertibility of these matrices implies that certain character formulas are invertible, yielding expressions for the cardinalities of sets of combinatorial objects with prescribed descent sets in terms of character values of the symmetric group.
