Divisor lattices and Schur positivity in cyclic induction
We classify Schur positivity in two families of symmetric functions $f_n^T$ introduced by Sundaram. For $k\ge2$, $f_n^{\{1,k\}}$ fails to be Schur-positive exactly when $n=k$ and $k$ is an even integer greater than $2$. For $T_k=\{k^i:i\ge0\}$, $f_n^{T_k}$ fails to be Schur-positive exactly when $k$ is an even integer greater than $2$ and $n=k^a$ for some $a\ge1$. In every exceptional degree, the coefficient of $s_{(1^n)}$ is $-1$, and all other Schur coefficients are nonnegative. Together with Sundaram's product implication, these classifications settle her Conjectures~1--3. We also recast Sundaram's plethystic identities in divisor-indexed coordinates and classify nonnegative Foulkes coordinates in each fixed degree and globally. If a composite $k$ divides $n$, both $f_n^{\{1,k\}}$ and $f_n^{T_k}$ have a negative Foulkes coordinate even when they are Schur-positive. Extending Hou's bounded-interval argument, we prove a uniform criterion for real divisor weights for $n\ge18$. If $1\in T$ and the Möbius weight $ψ^T$ satisfies the required bounds, $f_n^T$ is Schur-positive for every odd $n\ge18$. For even $n\ge18$, it fails exactly when $n\in T$ and $n/2\notin T$; then $s_{(1^n)}$ indexes the unique negative Schur coefficient, equal to $-1$. Finally, for $k=q^s$ with $q$ prime, $s\ge2$, $k\mid n$, and $n>k$, we derive major-index residue inequalities and classify all equality cases. For $n\ge18$, we also obtain a uniform quantitative estimate for partitions whose first row and first column each have length at most $n/2$.

Schur positivity from signed elementary expansions: clique-spiders and spiders $S(a,b,2)$
We prove a Schur alpha-omega lemma for chromatic symmetric functions. It bounds the partitions indexing nonzero Schur coefficients in terms of higher independence numbers, higher clique numbers, and the chromatic number. We then establish three equivalent dominance-matching criteria: matrix, Hall, and order-ideal, that certify Schur positivity from a fixed signed $e_I$-expansion. As applications, we obtain complete classifications of $e$-positivity and Schur positivity for four basic families of $3$-clique-spiders. Here $S^{ghk}_{rst}$ is formed by joining a common center to one vertex of each of $K_r$, $K_s$, and $K_t$ by internally disjoint paths of lengths $g$, $h$, and $k$, respectively. As a result, $S^{000}_{rst}$ is Schur positive exactly when $r\ge st-1$, and every graph $S^{100}_{rst}$ and $S^{010}_{rst}$ is Schur positive. When $s=t$, the graph $S^{001}_{rst}$ is Schur positive; when $s>t$, its Schur-positive members fall into four explicit parameter regimes. We also introduce a path-clique bootstrap and use it to prove that every spider $S(a,b,2)$ is Schur positive. Finally, we prove that the spider $S(a,b,2)$ for $a\ge b\ge2$ with $3\nmid b$ is $e$-positive if and only if $(a,b)\in\{(6,4),(12,4),(9,7)\}$, which advances the study of Tom's conjecture concerning the $e$-positivity of spiders $S(a,b,2)$.

Pfaffian--Toeplitz identities, Schur positivity, and the $q$-log-convexity of Baxter polynomials
We use the Pfaffian minor summation formula together with Jacobi--Trudi Toeplitz matrices to derive Pfaffian expansions in skew Schur functions. This yields explicit Schur expansions for several generating functions involving products of skew Schur functions. In particular, using sparse skew-symmetric matrices, we provide a Pfaffian proof of a Schur-positive identity arising in the study of the $q$-log-convexity of the Narayana polynomials. As the main application, we prove that the Baxter polynomials form a $q$-log-convex sequence. We further show that the Baxter transformation defined by the refined Baxter numbers preserves log-convexity. Finally, by realizing the $q$-refined Baxter numbers as principal specializations of rectangular Schur functions, we prove that the array of $q$-refined Baxter numbers is $q$-log-concave both along each row and along each column. Both $q$-log-concavity results extend naturally to the $q$-analogues of the $d$-Hoggatt numbers.

A counterexample to the claw-free Schur-positivity conjecture
The claw-free Schur-positivity conjecture, recorded by Stanley (1998) and credited there to Gasharov, asserts that the chromatic symmetric function of every claw-free graph is Schur-positive. We give a counterexample on 12 vertices: the line graph $G$ of the graph obtained from a 4-cycle by attaching triangles at two opposite vertices and pendant edges at the other two satisfies $[s_{(3,3,3,3)}]X_G = -64$. The coefficient follows from a short computation by hand and is also reproduced by three exact implementations. An exhaustive computation over all 216,777 connected claw-free graphs on at most 11 vertices shows that every one is Schur-positive, so 12 vertices is the minimum order of any counterexample. A complete census of the 1,728,404 connected claw-free graphs on 12 vertices finds exactly two non-Schur-positive isomorphism classes; the other has graph6 code K?`CR@`bAbRB and coefficient $[s_{(3,3,3,3)}] = -40$.

An infinite family of counterexamples to the Stanley--Gasharov conjecture
The Stanley--Gasharov conjecture asserts that the chromatic symmetric function of every claw-free graph is Schur-positive. Prajapati, and independently Matherne and Morales, found counterexamples, and the latter asked for an infinite family of counterexamples. Combining Prajapati's complete census through order~$12$ with an exact census of the $144{,}492$ previously untreated connected claw-free graphs on~$n$ vertices and~$m$ edges with $13\le n\le 21$ and $n-1\le m\le 20$, we show that their counterexample graph~$G_2$ with $12$ vertices and $21$ edges is the unique minimum counterexample under the edge-first, vertex-second order. We also construct an infinite family of connected line graphs whose chromatic symmetric functions are not Schur-positive. This yields an infinite family of counterexamples to the Stanley--Gasharov conjecture.
An $e$-positive classification for complete multipartite graphs
Shelburne and van Willigenburg (arXiv:2604.26158) characterize the Schur-positive complete multipartite graphs and leave open whether the graphs~$G=K_{(3,\,2^β)}$ are $e$-positive. We resolve this question and, together with their classification, characterize all $e$-positive complete multipartite graphs. Our main result is an explicit, manifestly nonnegative $e$-expansion of~$X_G$ whose coefficients are expressed in terms of the restricted-injection numbers. Our main idea is to derive a marker-variable coefficient-extraction formula for the $e$-coefficients of arbitrary complete multipartite graphs from the elementary--monomial Cauchy identity. For the particular graph~$G$, this formula reduces the proof to three coefficient families, which we evaluate using Dickson polynomials and recurrences for these numbers.

A Proof of Sundaram's Bounded-Interval Higher Lie Positivity Conjecture
For positive integers $n$ and $M$, Sundaram defined $ F_{n,M}=\sum_{\substack{d\mid n\\d\le M}} Lie_{n/d}[p_d] $ and conjectured that every coefficient in its Schur expansion is a nonnegative integer. We prove the conjecture. The power-sum expansion isolates the contribution of the identity class, and the proof divides Young diagrams at the intrinsic majority threshold. If the first row or first column contains more than half of the boxes, the Bernstein creation formula separates each rectangular-cycle character value into a hook constant and a remainder supported only on short cycles. The restrictions of the trivial and sign characters to the cyclic subgroup evaluate the constants exactly, whereas a uniform binomial contraction controls every distance from the boundary at once. If neither a row nor a column has a majority, Swanson's opposite-hook estimate gives a Catalan-scale lower bound for the dimension. The Fomin--Lulov rectangular-character estimate, together with uniform bounds for the truncated Möbius weights, then shows that the identity class dominates. Sundaram's plethystic identity consequently implies that $\prod_{r=1}^M(1-p_r)^{-1}$ is Schur-positive for every fixed $M$. We also record a degree-$12$ counterexample to a separate congruence-class product conjecture attributed to Richard Stanley.

On the Schur-positivity of various sets of set partitions
A symmetric function is called Schur-positive if it admits an expansion in the Schur basis with nonnegative coefficients. In this paper, we study the Schur positivity of symmetric functions naturally associated with set partitions, with respect to two different notions of descent. In the first case, the Schur expansion involves hook-shaped Young diagrams, and the corresponding coefficients are given by Touchard-Riordan polynomials, which enumerate matchings by their number of crossings. In the second case, the Schur functions correspond to two-rows Young diagrams, and the coefficients are partial sums of associated Bell numbers. A key ingredient of our approach in the second case is the notion of a removable singleton, defined algebraically and shown to admit an equivalent combinatorial interpretation via jeu-de-taquin rectification of skew tableaux. As an application, we establish Schur positivity for various classes of symmetric functions indexed by non-crossing partitions and partitions with a given number of parts. We provide an explicit combinatorial description of the tableaux that contribute to the Schur expansion, and we connects the obtained coefficients to some known integer sequences.

Touchard-Riordan Polynomials and Schur-positivity of Set Partitions
Published in EPTCS 445, 2026, pp. 1-9 • View PublicationBIB
A symmetric function is called Schur-positive if it admits an expansion in the Schur basis with nonnegative coefficients. In this paper, we study the Schur-positivity of symmetric functions naturally associated with set partitions, with respect to a descent set function that considers i as descent, if i and i+1 share a block in the partition. The Schur expansion involves hook-shaped Young diagrams, and the corresponding coefficients are given by Touchard-Riordan polynomials, which enumerate matchings by their number of crossings.

Temperley-Lieb Immanants of Ribbon Decomposition Matrices
Ribbon decomposition matrices give determinantal formulas for skew Schur functions that include as special cases the classical Jacobi-Trudi, Giambelli, and Lascoux-Pragacz formulas. We prove that certain elements of Lusztig's dual canonical basis, called Temperley-Lieb immanants, are Schur-positive when evaluated on ribbon decomposition matrices. We conjecture that this positivity holds for all elements of the dual canonical basis. This is known in the special case of Jacobi-Trudi matrices by a result of Haiman.

Dyck Symmetric Functions and Applications to \(q,t\)-Catalan Polynomials
This paper develops three related combinatorial results for Dyck-type sequences. First, it constructs a row-insertion algorithm for dual Dyck sequences and extends it to Dyck tableaux. This construction gives a weight-preserving bijection between dual Dyck factorizations and pairs consisting of a Dyck tableau and a semistandard Young tableau of the same shape. As a consequence, the associated dual Dyck symmetric functions are Schur-positive, and the corresponding affine Dyck symmetric functions have the conjugate-shape Schur expansion. Second, it applies these Dyck symmetric functions to the \(q,t\)-Catalan polynomial. It gives a two-column tableau formula for \(C_n(q,t)\), expressing it as a sum over Dyck \(m\)-skeletons and at-most-two-column Dyck tableaux with summands involving two-variable Schur functions. Third, it develops a Dyck-skeleton formula for the deficit range \(\defc\le 2n-8\). Full and special Dyck skeletons, together with local \(\mathrm{East}\), \(\mathrm{West}\), \(\mathrm{up}\), and \(\mathrm{down}\) moves, organize the low-area half of each low-deficit slice into skeleton-indexed strings. The \(q,t\)-symmetry of \(C_n(q,t)\) supplies the complementary high-area half in the resulting interval formula.
A Schur-positivity classification for complete multipartite graphs
A graph is Schur-positive if its chromatic symmetric function expands non-negatively in the Schur basis. We determine a full Schur-positivity classification for complete multipartite graphs by showing that a complete multipartite graph $K_λ$ is Schur-positive if and only if either $λ_i\in \{1,2\}$ for all $i$ or $λ=(3,2^β)$ for some $β\ge 1$. These results extend earlier classifications for complete bipartite and complete tripartite graphs to full generality. Our proofs combine structural arguments ruling out most cases, with a combinatorial analysis of Schur coefficients for the remaining family $K_{(3,2^β)}$ via special rim hook $G$-tabloids. Along the way, we establish a simpler formula for Schur coefficients of incomparability graphs, which we then apply to compute the coefficients of interest in terms of non-increasing sequences.

Partition division maps, symmetric functions and positivity
We introduce a linear map on symmetric functions that 'divides' a partition by a positive integer $k$, sending a Schur function indexed by a partition of $kn$ to a symmetric function indexed by partitions of $n$. We prove that the image of this map is always Schur-positive, meaning it expands in the Schur basis with nonnegative integer coefficients. These coefficients are enumerated by a new family of combinatorial objects, called $k$-Yamanouchi tableaux, which generalize the classical ballot (Yamanouchi) tableaux appearing in the Littlewood-Richardson rule. We also obtain expansions in the power-sum basis and establish power-sum positivity. A further application establishes a connection to work of Tewodros Amdeberhan, John Shareshian, and Richard Stanley on alternating permutations and Euler numbers.
Symmetry of the generating function of semistandard oscillating tableaux
H.Choi-D.Kim-S.J.Lee and S.J.Lee introduced a new kind of tableaux, semistandard oscillating tableaux (SSOT), around 2024 in the context of Lusztig $q$-weight multiplicities, KR crystals and King tableaux. In this paper, we study generating function of the SSOTs and its symmetry. First, we extend Gessel's and Assaf-Searles' expansion of a Schur function in terms of fundamental quasi-symmetric functions to our generating function. As a consequence, we show that it is $F$-positive. Further, we improve Sundaram's work on oscillating tableaux by proving that it is symmetric, Schur-positive, and has Saturated Newton polytope.

On symmetric pattern avoidance sets
For a set of permutations $S\subseteq S_n$, consider the quasisymmetric generating function $$Q(S): = \sum_{w\in S}F_{n, \mathrm{Des}(w)},$$ where $\mathrm{Des}(w) := \{i\mid w(i)> w(i+1)\}$ is the descent set of $w$ and $F_{n, \mathrm{Des}(w)}$ is Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric function. A set of permutations is said to be symmetric (respectively, Schur-positive) if its quasisymmetric generating function is symmetric (respectively, Schur-positive). Given a set $Π$ of permutations, let $S_n(Π)$ denote the set of permutations in $S_n$ that avoid all patterns in $Π.$ A set $Π$ is said to be symmetrically avoided (respectively, Schur-positively avoided) if $S_n(Π)$ is symmetric (respectively, Schur-positive) for all $n.$ Marmor proved in 2025 that for $n\ge 5$, a symmetric set $S\subseteq S_n$ has size at least $n-1$ unless $S\subseteq \{12\cdots n, n\cdots 21\}$ and asked for a general classification of the possible sizes of symmetric sets not containing the monotone elements $12\cdots n $ and $n\cdots 21$. We give a complete answer to this question for $n\ge 52.$ We also give a classification of symmetric sets of size at most $n-1$, thereby showing that they are actually Schur-positive, resolving a conjecture of Marmor. Finally, we give a classification of symmetrically avoided sets of size at most $n-1$, thereby showing that they are actually Schur-positively avoided.

Pattern-Avoiding Peak Functions
In 2020, Hamaker, Pawlowski, and Sagan introduced the \emph{pattern quasisymmetric functions}, which are quasisymmetric functions associated with pattern-avoidance classes of permutations, and defined via expansions in fundamental quasisymmetric functions. They determined which subsets of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_3$ index pattern quasisymmetric functions that are symmetric, and showed that these symmetric pattern quasisymmetric functions are also Schur-positive. They then posed the question of when symmetry or Schur $P$-positivity occur for analogous quasisymmetric functions defined in terms of peak functions. In this work we answer this question, that is, we identify precisely which subsets of $\mathfrak{S}_3$ give a \emph{pattern-avoiding peak function} that is symmetric, and give explicit formulas for the positive expansion into the closely-related Schur $Q$-functions.

The monoid representation of upho posets and total positivity
We show that all totally positive formal power series with integer coefficients and constant term $1$ are precisely the rank-generating functions of Schur-positive upho posets, thereby resolving the main conjecture proposed by Gao, Guo, Seetharaman, and Seidel. To achieve this, we construct a bijection between finitary colored upho posets and atomic, left-cancellative, invertible-free monoids, which restricts to a correspondence between $\mathbb{N}$-graded colored upho posets and left-cancellative homogeneous monoids. Furthermore, we introduce semi-upho posets and develop a convolution operation on colored upho posets with colored semi-upho posets within this monoid-theoretic framework.

Schur-positivity for generalized nets
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is Schur-positive if its chromatic symmetric function expands nonnegatively in the Schur basis. All claw-free graphs are conjectured to be Schur-positive. We introduce a combinatorial object corresponding to a graph G, called a special rim hook G-tabloid, which is a variation on the special rim hook tabloid. These objects can be employed to compute any Schur coefficient of the chromatic symmetric function of a graph. We construct sign-reversing maps on these special rim hook G-tabloids to obtain a recurrence relation for the Schur coefficients of a family of claw-free graphs called generalized nets, then we prove the entire family is Schur-positive. We subsequently determine an analogous recurrence relation for another, similar family of claw-free graphs. Thus, we demonstrate a new method for proving Schur-positivity of chromatic symmetric functions, which has the potential to be applied to make further progress toward the aforementioned conjecture.

Temperley-Lieb Crystals
Elements of Lusztig's dual canonical bases are Schur-positive when evaluated on (generalized) Jacobi-Trudi matrices. This deep property was proved by Rhoades and Skandera, relying on a result of Haiman, and ultimately on the (proof of) Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture. For a particularly tractable part of the dual canonical basis - called Temperley-Lieb immanants - we give a generalization of Littlewood-Richardson rule: we provide a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficient of a particular Schur function in the evaluation of a particular Temperley-Lieb immanant on a particular Jacobi-Trudi matrix. For this we introduce shuffle tableaux, and apply Stembridge's axioms to show that certain graphs on shuffle tableaux are type $A$ Kashiwara crystals.

Descent representations and colored quasisymmetric functions
The quasisymmetric generating function of the set of permutations whose inverses have a fixed descent set is known to be symmetric and Schur-positive. The corresponding representation of the symmetric group is called the descent representation. In this paper, we provide an extension of this result to colored permutation groups, where Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions are replaced by Poirier's colored quasisymmetric functions. For this purpose, we introduce a colored analogue of zigzag shapes and prove that the representations associated with these shapes coincide with colored descent representations studied by Adin, Brenti and Roichman in the case of two colors and Bagno and Biagioli in the general case. Additionally, we provide a colored analogue of MaMahon's alternating formula which expresses ribbon Schur functions in the basis of complete homogeneous symmetric functions.
