Transitive and Gallai colorings
A Gallai coloring of the complete graph is an edge-coloring with no rainbow triangle. This concept first appeared in the study of comparability graphs and anti-Ramsey theory. We introduce a transitive analogue for acyclic directed graphs, and generalize both notions to Coxeter systems, matroids and commutative algebras. It is shown that for any finite matroid (or oriented matroid), the maximal number of colors is equal to the matroid rank. This generalizes a result of Erdős-Simonovits-Sós for complete graphs. The number of Gallai (or transitive) colorings of the matroid that use at most $k$ colors is a polynomial in $k$. Also, for any acyclic oriented matroid, represented over the real numbers, the number of transitive colorings using at most 2 colors is equal to the number of chambers in the dual hyperplane arrangement. We count Gallai and transitive colorings of the root system of type A using the maximal number of colors, and show that, when equipped with a natural descent set map, the resulting quasisymmetric function is symmetric and Schur-positive.

Schur-Positivity of Short Chords in Matchings
We prove that the set of matchings with a fixed number of unmatched vertices is Schur-positive with respect to the set of short chords. Two proofs are presented. The first proof applies a new combinatorial criterion for Schur-positivity, while the second is bijective. The coefficients in the Schur expansion are derived, and interpreted in terms of Bessel polynomials. We present a Knuth-like equivalence relation on matchings, and show that every equivalence class corresponds to an irreducible representation. We proceed to find various refined Schur-positive sets, including the set of matchings with a prescribed crossing number and the set of matchings with a given number of pairs of intersecting chords. Finally, we characterize all the matchings $m$ such that the set of matchings avoiding $m$ is Schur-positive.

Partial symmetries of iterated plethysms
Published in Gutiérrez, Á., Rosas, M. H. Partial Symmetries of Iterated Plethysms. Ann. Comb. (2023) • View PublicationBIB
This work highlights the existence of partial symmetries in large families of iterated plethystic coefficients. The plethystic coefficients involved come from the expansion in the Schur basis of iterated plethysms of Schur functions indexed by one-row partitions. The partial symmetries are described in terms of an involution on partitions, the flip involution, that generalizes the ubiquitous $ω$ involution. Schur-positive symmetric functions possessing this partial symmetry are termed flip-symmetric. The operation of taking plethysm with $s_λ$ preserves flip-symmetry, provided that $λ$ is a partition of two. Explicit formulas for the iterated plethysms $s_2\circ s_b\circ s_a$ and $s_c\circ s_2\circ s_a$, with $a,$ $b,$ and $c$ $\ge$ $2$ allow us to show that these two families of iterated plethysms are flip-symmetric. The article concludes with some observations, remarks, and open questions on the unimodality and asymptotic normality of certain flip-symmetric sequences of iterated plethystic coefficients.
A domino tableau-based view on type B Schur-positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Over the past years, major attention has been drawn to the question of identifying Schur-positive sets, i.e. sets of permutations whose associated quasisymmetric function is symmetric and can be written as a non-negative sum of Schur symmetric functions. The set of arc permutations, i.e. the set of permutations $π$ in $S_n$ such that for any $1\leq j \leq n$, $\{π(1),π(2),\dots,π(j)\}$ is an interval in $\mathbb{Z}_n$ is one of the most noticeable examples. This paper introduces a new type B extension of Schur-positivity to signed permutations based on Chow's quasisymmetric functions and generating functions for domino tableaux. As an important characteristic, our development is compatible with the works of Solomon regarding the descent algebra of Coxeter groups. In particular, we design descent preserving bijections between signed arc permutations and sets of domino tableaux to show that they are indeed type B Schur-positive.

A combinatorial Schur expansion of triangle-free horizontal-strip LLT polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In recent years, Alexandersson and others proved combinatorial formulas for the Schur function expansion of the horizontal-strip LLT polynomial $G_λ(x;q)$ in some special cases. We associate a weighted graph $Π$ to $λ$ and we use it to express a linear relation among LLT polynomials. We apply this relation to prove an explicit combinatorial Schur-positive expansion of $G_λ(x;q)$ whenever $Π$ is triangle-free. We also prove that the largest power of $q$ in the LLT polynomial is the total edge weight of our graph.
The Rank-Generating Functions of Upho Posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Upper homogeneous finite type (upho) posets are a large class of partially ordered sets with the property that the principal order filter at every vertex is isomorphic to the whole poset. Well-known examples include k-array trees, the grid graphs, and the Stern poset. Very little is known about upho posets in general. In this paper, we construct upho posets with Schur-positive Ehrenborg quasisymmetric functions, whose rank-generating functions have rational poles and zeros. We also categorize the rank-generating functions of all planar upho posets. Finally, we prove the existence of an upho poset with uncomputable rank-generating function.

Positivity among P-partition generating functions
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 26, 171-204, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We seek simple conditions on a pair of labeled posets that determine when the difference of their $(P,ω)$-partition enumerators is $F$-positive, i.e., positive in Gessel's fundamental basis. This is a quasisymmetric analogue of the extensively studied problem of finding conditions on a pair of skew shapes that determine when the difference of their skew Schur functions is Schur-positive. We determine necessary conditions and separate sufficient conditions for $F$-positivity, and show that a broad operation for combining posets preserves positivity properties. We conclude with classes of posets for which we have conditions that are both necessary and sufficient.

Robinson-Schensted correspondence for unit interval orders
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Stanley-Stembridge conjecture associates a symmetric function to each natural unit interval order $\mathcal P$. In this paper, we define relations à la Knuth on the symmetric group for each $\mathcal P$ and conjecture that the associated $\mathcal P$-Knuth equivalence classes are Schur-positive, refining theorems of Gasharov, Brosnan-Chow, and Guay-Paquet. The resulting equivalence graphs fit into the framework of D graphs studied by Assaf. Furthermore, we conjecture that the Schur expansion is given by column-readings of $\mathcal P$-tableaux that occur in the equivalence class. We prove these conjectures for $\mathcal P$ avoiding two specific suborders by introducing $\mathcal P$-analog of Robinson-Schensted insertion, giving an answer to a long standing question of Chow.

$P$-Schur positive $P$-Grothendieck Polynomials
Published in Australasian Journal of Combinatorics 85(2) (2023), 106-130 • Search Publication
The symmetric Grothendieck polynomials generalize Schur polynomials and are Schur-positive by degree. Combinatorially this is manifested as the generalization of semistandard Young tableaux by set-valued tableaux. We define a (weak) symmetric $P$-Grothendieck polynomial which generalizes $P$-Schur polynomials in the same way. Combinatorially this is manifested as the generalization of shifted semistandard Young tableaux by a new type of tableaux which we call shifted multiset tableaux.

On cyclic Schur-positive sets of permutation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a notion of {\em cyclic Schur-positivity} for sets of permutations, which naturally extends the classical notion of Schur-positivity, and it involves the existence of a bijection from permutations to standard Young tableaux that preserves the cyclic descent set. Cyclic Schur-positive sets of permutations are always Schur-positive, but the converse does not hold, as exemplified by inverse descent classes, Knuth classes and conjugacy classes. In this paper we show that certain classes of permutations invariant under either horizontal or vertical rotation are cyclic Schur-positive. The proof unveils a new equidistribution phenomenon of descent sets on permutations, provides affirmative solutions to conjectures from [9] and [2], and yields new examples of Schur-positive sets.

Cyclic sieving, skew Macdonald polynomials and Schur positivity
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 3 (2020) no. 4, pp. 913-939 • View PublicationBIB
When $λ$ is a partition, the specialized non-symmetric Macdonald polynomial $E_λ(x;q;0)$ is symmetric and related to a modified Hall--Littlewood polynomial. We show that whenever all parts of the integer partition $λ$ is a multiple of $n$, the underlying set of fillings exhibit the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) under a cyclic shift of the columns. The corresponding CSP polynomial is given by $E_λ(x;q;0)$. In addition, we prove a refined cyclic sieving phenomenon where the content of the fillings is fixed. This refinement is closely related to an earlier result by B.~Rhoades. We also introduce a skew version of $E_λ(x;q;0)$. We show that these are symmetric and Schur-positive via a variant of the Robinson--Schenstedt--Knuth correspondence and we also describe crystal raising- and lowering operators for the underlying fillings. Moreover, we show that the skew specialized non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials are in some cases vertical-strip LLT polynomials. As a consequence, we get a combinatorial Schur expansion of a new family of LLT polynomials.

Positive specializations of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials
Published in Adv. Math. Vol. 363 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
It is a classical fundamental result that Schur-positive specializations of the ring of symmetric functions are characterized via totally positive functions whose parametrization describes the Edrei-Thoma theorem. In this paper we study positive specializations of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials, $K$-theoretic deformations of Schur polynomials.
Schur and $e$-positivity of trees and cut vertices
We prove that the chromatic symmetric function of any $n$-vertex tree containing a vertex of degree $d\geq \log _2n +1$ is not $e$-positive, that is, not a positive linear combination of elementary symmetric functions. Generalizing this, we also prove that the chromatic symmetric function of any $n$-vertex connected graph containing a cut vertex whose deletion disconnects the graph into $d\geq\log _2n +1$ connected components is not $e$-positive. Furthermore we prove that any $n$-vertex bipartite graph, including all trees, containing a vertex of degree greater than $\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil$ is not Schur-positive, namely not a positive linear combination of Schur functions. In complete generality, we prove that if an $n$-vertex connected graph has no perfect matching (if $n$ is even) or no almost perfect matching (if $n$ is odd), then it is not $e$-positive. We hence deduce that many graphs containing the claw are not $e$-positive.

Convex caterpillars are Schur-Positive
A remarkable result of Stanley shows that the set of maximal chains in the non-crossing partition lattice of type $A$ is Schur-positive, where descents are defined by a distinguished edge labeling. A bijection between these chains and labeled trees was presented by Goulden and Yong. Using Adin-Roichman's variant of Björner's $EL$-labeling, we show that the subset of maximal chains in the non-crossing partition lattice of type $A$, whose underlying tree is a convex caterpillar, is Schur-positive.

The probability of positivity in symmetric and quasisymmetric functions
Published in J. Comb. 11:475--493 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Given an element in a finite-dimensional real vector space, $V$, that is a nonnegative linear combination of basis vectors for some basis $B$, we compute the probability that it is furthermore a nonnegative linear combination of basis vectors for a second basis, $A$. We then apply this general result to combinatorially compute the probability that a symmetric function is Schur-positive (recovering the recent result of Bergeron--Patrias--Reiner), $e$-positive or $h$-positive. Similarly we compute the probability that a quasisymmetric function is quasisymmetric Schur-positive or fundamental-positive. In every case we conclude that the probability tends to zero as the degree of a function tends to infinity.

The genomic Schur function is fundamental-positive
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 24, no. 1, 2020, 95-108 • View PublicationBIB
In work with A. Yong, the author introduced genomic tableaux to prove the first positive combinatorial rule for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in torus-equivariant $K$-theory of Grassmannians. We then studied the genomic Schur function $U_λ$, a generating function for such tableaux, showing that it is non-trivially a symmetric function, although generally not Schur-positive. Here we show that $U_λ$ is, however, positive in the basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We give a positive combinatorial formula for this expansion in terms of gapless increasing tableaux; this is, moreover, the first finite expression for $U_λ$. Combined with work of A. Garsia and J. Remmel, this yields a compact combinatorial (but necessarily non-positive) formula for the Schur expansion of $U_λ$.

Classifying the near-equality of ribbon Schur functions
Published in European J. of Combin. 90 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of determining when the difference of two ribbon Schur functions is a single Schur function. We fully classify the five infinite families of pairs of ribbon Schur functions whose difference is a single Schur function with corresponding partition having at most two parts at least $2$. We also prove an identity for differences of ribbon Schur functions and we determine some necessary conditions for such a difference to be Schur-positive, depending on the distribution of $1$'s and the end row lengths.

On a positivity conjecture in the character table of $S_n$
Published in Electron. J. of Combin. 26 (2019), No. 1, Paper 1.1, 43 pp • View PublicationBIB
In previous work of this author it was conjectured that the sum of power sums $p_λ,$ for partitions $λ$ ranging over an interval $[(1^n), μ]$ in reverse lexicographic order, is Schur-positive. Here we investigate this conjecture and establish its truth in the following special cases: for $μ\in [(n-4,1^4), (n)]$ or $μ\in [(1^n), (3,1^{n-3})], $ or $μ=(3, 2^k, 1^r)$ when $k\geq 1$ and $0\leq r\leq 2.$ Many new Schur positivity questions are presented.

Linear relations on LLT polynomials and their k-Schur positivity for k=2
Published • View PublicationBIB
LLT polynomials are $q$-analogues of product of Schur functions that are known to be Schur-positive by Grojnowski and Haiman. However, there is no known combinatorial formula for the coefficients in the Schur expansion. Finding such a formula also provides Schur positivity of Macdonald polynomials. On the other hand, Haiman and Hugland conjectured that LLT polynomials for skew partitions lying on $k$ adjacent diagonals are $k$-Schur positive, which is much stronger than Schur positivity. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for $k=2$ by analyzing unicellular LLT polynomials. We first present a linearity theorem for unicellular LLT polynomials for $k=2$. By analyzing linear relations between LLT polynomials with known results on LLT polynomials for rectangles, we provide the $2$-Schur positivity of the unicellular LLT polynomials as well as LLT polynomials appearing in Haiman-Hugland conjecture for $k=2$.
