Posets of trek polynomials for directed trees
When a variety $V_\varphi$ equals the image of a polynomial map $\varphi$ whose coordinate functions are combinatorial generating polynomials (i.e.~polynomials enumerating combinatorial objects), the geometry of $V_\varphi$ reflects identities satisfied by the generating polynomials. The resulting interplay between combinatorics and algebraic geometry can be used to answer questions about $V_\varphi$. A recent technique proposes to do so using a partially ordered set (poset) $P_\varphi$ defined via the coefficient vectors of the polynomials defining $\varphi$. This paper characterizes the poset $P_\varphi$ when the generating polynomials defining $\varphi$ enumerate subgraphs of a directed tree known as treks. The characterization is used to compute the linear span of $V_\varphi$, prove it is toric and deduce a basis for its vanishing ideal. It is also shown that this poset of trek polynomials for a directed tree is a so-called $π$-system if and only if the tree satisfies a property characterized via Stanley's P-partitions. As an additional consequence, it is shown that the varieties for two distinct directed trees intersect in a strictly lower-dimensional variety. This solves an instance of the structural identifiability problem in the graphical models program from statistics.
Partitioning a graph into $Δ$-convex sets of graphs and graph products
Given a graph $G$ and a set $S \subseteq V(G)$, we say that $S$ is $Δ$-convex if the neighborhood of every vertex not in $S$ is an independent set. A collection ${\cal V} = (V_1, V_2, \ldots , V_p)$ of convex sets of $G$ is a convex $p$-cover if $V(G) = \underset{1 \leq i \leq p}{\bigcup} V_i$ and $V_i \nsubseteq {\underset{1 \leq j \leq p, j\ne i}{\bigcup}} V_j$ for $i \in \{1, \ldots, p\}$. If the convex sets of ${\cal V}$ are pairwise disjoint, ${\cal V}$ is a convex $p$-partition of $V(G)$. The convex cover number $φ_c(G)$ (the convex partition number $Θ_c(G)$) of a graph $G$ is the least integer $p \geq 2$ for which $G$ has a convex $p$-cover (convex $p$-partition). In this work, we prove that the {\sc Convex p-cover} and {\sc Convex p-Partition} problems are \NP-complete for any fixed $p \ge 4$ in $Δ$-convexity. Furthermore, for the three standard graph products, namely, the Cartesian, strong and lexicographic products, we determine these parameters for some cases and present bounds for others.

Forest polynomials and the class of the permutahedral variety
We study a basis of the polynomial ring that we call forest polynomials. This family of polynomials is indexed by a combinatorial structure called indexed forests and permits several definitions, one of which involves flagged P-partitions. As such, these polynomials have a positive expansion in the basis of slide polynomials. By a novel insertion procedure that may be viewed as a generalization of the Sylvester correspondence we establish that Schubert polynomials decompose positively in terms of forest polynomials. Our insertion procedure involves a correspondence on words which allows us to show that forest polynomials multiply positively. We proceed to show that forest polynomials are a particularly convenient basis in regards to studying the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo the ideal of positive degree quasisymmetric polynomials. This aspect allows us to give a manifestly nonnegative integral description for the Schubert class expansion of the cohomology class of the permutahedral variety in terms of a parking procedure. We study the associated combinatorics in depth and introduce a multivariate extension of mixed Eulerian numbers.
Generalized chromatic functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define vertex-colourings for edge-partitioned digraphs, which unify the theory of P-partitions and proper vertex-colourings of graphs. We use our vertex-colourings to define generalized chromatic functions, which merge the chromatic symmetric and quasisymmetric functions of graphs and generating functions of P-partitions. Moreover, numerous classical bases of symmetric and quasisymmetric functions, both in commuting and noncommuting variables, can be realized as special cases of our generalized chromatic functions. We also establish product and coproduct formulas for our functions. Additionally, we construct the new Hopf algebra of r-quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and apply our functions to confirm its Hopf structure, and establish natural bases for it.

On a conjecture concerning the shuffle-compatible permutation statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of shuffle-compatible permutation statistics was implicit in Stanley's work on P-partitions and was first explicitly studied by Gessel and Zhuang. The aim of this paper is to prove that the triple ${\rm (udr, pk, des)}$ is shuffle-compatible as conjectured by Gessel and Zhuang, where ${\rm udr}$ denotes the number of up-down runs, ${\rm pk}$ denotes the peak number, and ${\rm des}$ denotes the descent number. This is accomplished by establishing an ${\rm (udr, pk, des)}$-preserving bijection in the spirit of Baker-Jarvis and Sagan's bijective proofs of shuffle-compatibility property of permutation statistics. As an application, our bijection also enables us to prove that the pair $({\rm cpk}, {\rm cdes})$ is cyclic shuffle-compatible, where ${\rm cpk}$ denotes the cyclic peak number and ${\rm cdes}$ denotes the cyclic descent number.
P-partition power sums
We develop the theory of weighted P-partitions, which generalises the theory of P-partitions from labelled posets to weighted labelled posets. We define the related generating functions in the natural way and compute their product, coproduct and other properties. As an application we introduce the basis of combinatorial power sums for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions and the reverse basis, both of which refine the power sum symmetric functions. These bases share many properties with the type 1 and type 2 quasisymmetric power sums introduced by Ballantine, Daugherty, Hicks, Mason and Niese, and moreover expand into the monomial basis of quasisymmetric functions with nonnegative integer coefficients. We prove formulas for products, coproducts and classical quasisymmetric involutions via the combinatorics of P-partitions, and give combinatorial interpretations for the coefficients when expanded into the monomial and fundamental bases.
Cyclic Shuffle Compatibility
Consider a permutation p to be any finite list of distinct positive integers. A statistic is a function St whose domain is all permutations. Let S(p,q) be the set of shuffles of two disjoint permutations p and q. We say that St is shuffle compatible if the distribution of St over S(p,q) depends only on St(p), St(q), and the lengths of p and q. This notion is implicit in Stanley's work on P-partitions and was first explicitly studied by Gessel and Zhuang. One of the places where shuffles are useful is in describing the product in the algebra of quasisymmetric functions. Recently Adin, Gessel, Reiner, and Roichman defined an algebra of cyclic quasisymmetric functions where a cyclic version of shuffling comes into play. The purpose of this paper is to define and study cyclic shuffle compatibility. In particular, we show how one can lift shuffle compatibility results for (linear) permutations to cyclic ones. We then apply this result to cyclic descents and cyclic peaks. We also discuss the problem of finding a cyclic analogue of the major index.

Positivity among P-partition generating functions
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 26, 171-204, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We seek simple conditions on a pair of labeled posets that determine when the difference of their $(P,ω)$-partition enumerators is $F$-positive, i.e., positive in Gessel's fundamental basis. This is a quasisymmetric analogue of the extensively studied problem of finding conditions on a pair of skew shapes that determine when the difference of their skew Schur functions is Schur-positive. We determine necessary conditions and separate sufficient conditions for $F$-positivity, and show that a broad operation for combining posets preserves positivity properties. We conclude with classes of posets for which we have conditions that are both necessary and sufficient.

Order polynomial product formulas and poset dynamics
Published in In "Open Problems in Algebraic Combinatorics," Vol. 110 of Proceedings of Symposia in Pure Matehmatics, AMS, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
We survey all known examples of finite posets whose order polynomials have product formulas, and we propose the heuristic that these are the same posets with good dynamical behavior. Here the dynamics in question are the actions of promotion on the linear extensions of the poset and rowmotion on the P-partitions of the poset.

Width-k Eulerian polynomials of type A and B and its Gamma-positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define some generalizations of the classical descent and inversion statistics on signed permutations that arise from the work of Sack and Ulfarsson [20] and called after width-k descents and width-k inversionsof type A in Davis's work [8]. Using the aforementioned new statistics, we derive some new generalizations of Eulerian polynomials of type A, B and D. It should also be noticed that we establish the Gamma-positivity of the "width-k" Eulerian polynomials and we give a combinatorial interpretation of finite sequences associated to these new polynomials using quasisymmetric functions and P-partition in Petersen's work [18].

Enriched set-valued P-partitions and shifted stable Grothendieck polynomials
Published in Math. Z. 299 (2021), 1929-1972 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce an enriched analogue of Lam and Pylyavskyy's theory of set-valued $P$-partitions. An an application, we construct a $K$-theoretic version of Stembridge's Hopf algebra of peak quasisymmetric functions. We show that the symmetric part of this algebra is generated by Ikeda and Naruse's shifted stable Grothendieck polynomials. We give the first proof that the natural skew analogues of these power series are also symmetric. A central tool in our constructions is a "$K$-theoretic" Hopf algebra of labeled posets, which may be of independent interest. Our results also lead to some new explicit formulas for the involution $ω$ on the ring of symmetric functions.

Bijective proofs of shuffle compatibility results
Published • View PublicationBIB
Define a permutation to be any sequence of distinct positive integers. Given two permutations p and s on disjoint underlying sets, we denote by p sh s the set of shuffles of p and s (the set of all permutations obtained by interleaving the two permutations). A permutation statistic is a function St whose domain is the set of permutations such that St(p) only depends on the relative order of the elements of p. A permutation statistic is shuffle compatible if the distribution of St on p sh s depends only on St(p) and St(s) and their lengths rather than on the individual permutations themselves. This notion is implicit in the work of Stanley in his theory of P-partitions. The definition was explicitly given by Gessel and Zhuang who proved that various permutation statistics were shuffle compatible using mainly algebraic means. This work was continued by Grinberg. The purpose of the present article is to use bijective techniques to give demonstrations of shuffle compatibility. In particular, we show how a large number of permutation statistics can be shown to be shuffle compatible using a few simple bijections. Our approach also leads to a method for constructing such bijective proofs rather than having to treat each one in an ad hoc manner. Finally, we are able to prove a conjecture of Gessel and Zhuang about the shuffle compatibility of a certain statistic.

Periodic P-Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce a class of $(P, ω)$-partitions that we call periodic $(P, ω)$-partitions, then prove that such $(P, ω)$-partitions satisfy a homogeneous first-order matrix difference equation. After defining an appropriate counting problem for the above $(P, ω)$-partitions, we show that as a consequence of this equation, periodic $(P, ω)$-partitions can be enumerated with constant coefficient linear recurrence relations. By analysing the above matrix difference equation, we also prove a result for the asymptotic growth rate for the number of periodic $(P, ω)$-partitions. The results of this paper generalizes and strengthens the constant coefficient linear recurrence results proved by Sun and by López, Martínez, Pérez, Pérez, and Basova for enumerating standard Young tableaux on shifted strips with constant width.

Complete intersection P-partition rings
We present an alternate proof of a result of Féray and Reiner characterizing posets whose $P$-partition rings are complete intersections. This shortened proof relates the complete intersection property to a simple structural property of a graph associated to $P$.

Poset ideals of P-partitions and generalized letterplace and determinantal ideals
For any finite poset $P$ we have the poset of isotone maps $\text{Hom}(P,\mathbb{N})$, also called $P^{op}$-partitions. To any poset ideal ${\mathcal J}$ in $\text{Hom}(P,\mathbb{N})$, finite or infinite, we associate monomial ideals: the letterplace ideal $L({\mathcal J},P)$ and the Alexander dual co-letterplace ideal $L(P,{\mathcal J})$, and study them. We derive a class of monomial ideals in $k[x_p, p \in P]$ called $P$-stable. When $P$ is a chain we establish a duality on strongly stable ideals. We study the case when ${\mathcal J}$ is a principal poset ideal. When $P$ is a chain we construct a new class of determinantal ideals which generalizes ideals of {\it maximal} minors and whose initial ideals are letterplace ideals of prinicpal poset ideals.

d-Complete posets: local structural axioms, properties, and equivalent definitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Although d-complete posets arose along the interface between algebraic combinatorics and Lie theory, they are defined using only requirements on their local structure. These posets are a mutual generalization of rooted trees, shapes, and shifted shapes. They possess Stanley's hook product property for their P-partition generating functions and Schutzenberger's well defined jeu de taquin rectification property. The original definition of d-complete poset was lengthy, but more succinct definitions were later developed. Here several definitions are shown to be equivalent. The basic properties of d-complete posets are summarized. Background and a partial bibliography for these posets is given.

Connected Order Ideals and P-Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite poset $P$, we associate a simple graph denoted by $G_P$ with all connected order ideals of $P$ as vertices, and two vertices are adjacent if and only if they have nonempty intersection and are incomparable with respect to set inclusion. We establish a bijection between the set of maximum independent sets of $G_P$ and the set of $P$-forests, introduced by Féray and Reiner in their study of the fundamental generating function $F_P(\textbf{x})$ associated with $P$-partitions. Based on this bijection, in the cases when $P$ is naturally labeled we show that $F_P(\textbf{x})$ can factorise, such that each factor is a summation of rational functions determined by maximum independent sets of a connected component of $G_P$. This approach enables us to give an alternative proof for Féray and Reiner's nice formula of $F_P(\textbf{x})$ for the case of $P$ being a naturally labeled forest with duplications. Another consequence of our result is a product formula to compute the number of linear extensions of $P$.

Lecture hall P-partitions

We introduce and study s-lecture hall P-partitions which is a generalization of s-lecture hall partitions to labeled (weighted) posets. We provide generating function identities for s-lecture hall P-partitions that generalize identities obtained by Savage and Schuster for s-lecture hall partitions, and by Stanley for P-partitions. We also prove that the corresponding (P,s)-Eulerian polynomials are real-rooted for certain pairs (P,s), and speculate on unimodality properties of these polynomials.

Convex p-partitions of bipartite graphs
