Eulerian insertion operators and an Eulerian form of the Pieri rule
We study the operators obtained by inserting copies of a new largest letter into multiset permutations. Let $G_r$ denote the operator which inserts $r$ copies of a new largest letter. After the change of variables $δ=y-x$, $u=x/y$, and $E=u\partial_u$, we find that $$G_r=\frac{δ^r}{r!}E(E+1)\cdots(E+r-1).$$ Its generating series acts by a rational substitution, which yields the composition law. Our main result gives a common symmetric-function explanation for the ordinary and major-index operators. For $N\geq 0$, define $Φ_N(F_{N,S})=x^{|S|+1}y^{N-|S|}$. We prove that multiplication by the complete homogeneous symmetric function $h_r$ becomes the ordinary insertion operator: $Φ_{N+r}(h_r f)=G_rΦ_N(f)$, where $f\in\mathrm{QSym}_N$. There is a parallel specialization for the major index. A reverse finite principal specialization sends multiplication by $h_r$ to an operator $Q_r$, which is a polynomial in the $q$-shift $Θ_qf(t)=f(qt)$. Thus the ordinary and major-index operators arise from the same multiplication operator $f\mapsto h_r f$. Since the functions $h_r$ freely generate the ring of symmetric functions, the assignment $h_r\mapsto G_r$ extends to an algebra homomorphism. We determine the kernel of this homomorphism and the image of every homogeneous component. The images of Schur functions satisfy the Littlewood--Richardson multiplication identities, and the one-row case gives an Eulerian form of the Pieri rule.
Perverse filtration on Hilbert schemes via upward flow
We explicitly compute the perverse Leray filtration on the top cohomology of Hilbert schemes of points on $Σ\times \mathbb{C}$, for any connected smooth projective curve $Σ$. The computation is carried out in the natural basis given by the $\mathbb{C}^*$-upward-flow cycles. The result is described by a simple symmetric-function dictionary: upward-flow classes correspond to products of complete homogeneous symmetric functions, while the perverse-homogeneous basis corresponds to products of Newton power sums, giving an explicit, upper-triangular change-of-basis between the two.
Sprout Symmetric Functions: Part 1
A \emph{sprout sequence} is a sequence
$\frakr=(R_0=1,R_1,R_2,\dots)$ of symmetric functions in the
variables $\bmx=(x_1,x_2,\dots)$ over a field $K$ generated from a
power series $F(t)=1+a_1t+a_2t^2+\cdots$ by the rule $\sum_{n\geq
0}R_nt^n = \prod_{i\geq 1} F(x_it)$. The power series $F(t)$ is
called the \emph{seed} of $\frakr$. This concept originated in the
work of Littlewood and Richardson (though not with the name ``sprout
sequence''), and numerous examples of sprout sequences have appeared
in the literature. They are related to chromatic Tutte polynomials
of complete graphs and complete hypergraphs, binomial posets, upper
homogeneous (upho) posets, topological genera, etc.
We first develop the basic theory of sprout sequences and then look
at the special case $F(t)=\sec(\sqrt{t})$. We give five
characterizations of sprout sequences and consider the expansion
of sprout symmetric functions in terms of well-known symmetric
function bases. The Schur positivity, elementary symmetric function
positivity, and complete homogeneous symmetric function positivity
of $R_n$ for all $n$ are completely characterized using the
Edrei-Thoma theorem from the theory of total positivity.
The seed $F(t)=\sec(\sqrt{t})$ is especially interesting. The
expansion of $R_n$ in the power sum or monomial basis is related to
alternating permutations. The Schur function expansion is related to
standard Young skew tableaux. The expansion in terms of the complete
symmetric functions has nonnegative integer coefficients, but we
don't know a combinatorial interpretation. Finally we give a formula
for $R_n$ as a sum of chromatic symmetric functions of interval
orders.
On maximal rank properties for symmetric polynomials in an equigenerated monomial complete intersection
It is well known that a monomial complete intersection has the strong Lefschetz property in characteristic zero. This property is equivalent to the statement that any power of the sum of the variables is a maximal rank element on the complete intersection. In this paper, we investigate what happens when this element is replaced by another symmetric polynomial, in an equigenerated complete intersection.
We answer the question completely for the power sum symmetric polynomial using a grading technique, and for any Schur polynomial in the case of two variables by deriving a closed formula for the determinants of a family of Toeplitz matrices. Further, we obtain partial results in three or more variables for the elementary and the complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials and pose several open questions.
Majorization and Inequalities among Complete Homogeneous Symmetric Functions
Inequalities among symmetric functions are fundamental in various branches of mathematics, thus motivating a systematic study of their structure. Majorization has been shown to characterize inequalities among commonly used symmetric functions, except for complete homogeneous symmetric functions (shortened as CHs). In 2011, Cuttler, Greene, and Skandera posed a natural question: Can majorization also characterize inequalities among CHs? Their work demonstrated that majorization characterizes inequalities among CHs up to degree 7 and suggested exploring its validity for higher degrees. In this paper, we show that, for every degree greater than 7, majorization does not characterize inequalities among CHs.
Cyclic Sieving of Multisets with Bounded Multiplicity and the Frobenius Coin Problem
The two subjects in the title are related via the specialization of symmetric polynomials at roots of unity. Let $f(z_1,\ldots,z_n)\in\mathbb{Z}[z_1,\ldots,z_n]$ be a symmetric polynomial with integer coefficients and let $ω$ be a primitive $d$th root of unity. If $d|n$ or $d|(n-1)$ then we have $f(1,\ldots,ω^{n-1})\in\mathbb{Z}$. If $d|n$ then of course we have $f(ω,\ldots,ω^n)=f(1,\ldots,ω^{n-1})\in\mathbb{Z}$, but when $d|(n+1)$ we also have $f(ω,\ldots,ω^n)\in\mathbb{Z}$. We investigate these three families of integers in the case $f=h_k^{(b)}$, where $h_k^{(b)}$ is the coefficient of $t^k$ in the generating function $\prod_{i=1}^n (1+z_it+\cdots+(z_it)^{b-1})$. These polynomials were previously considered by several authors. They interpolate between the elementary symmetric polynomials ($b$=2) and the complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials ($b\to\infty$). When $\gcd(b,d)=1$ with $d|n$ or $d|(n-1)$ we find that the integers $h_k^{(b)}=(1,ω,\ldots,ω^{n-1})$ are related to cyclic sieving of multisets with multiplicities bounded above by $b$, generalizing the well know cyclic sieving results for sets ($b=2$) and multisets ($b\to \infty$). When $\gcd(b,d)=1$ and $d|(n+1)$ we find that the integers $h_k^{(b)}(ω,ω^2,\ldots,ω^n)$ are related to the Frobenius coin problem with two coins. The case $\gcd(b,d)\neq 1$ is more complicated. At the end of the paper we combine these results with the expansion of $h_k^{(b)}$ in various bases of the ring of symmetric polynomials.

We consider polynomials of the form $\operatorname{h}_m(y_1^{[\varkappa_1]},\ldots,y_n^{[\varkappa_n]})$, where $\operatorname{h}_m$ is the complete homogeneous polynomial of degree $m$ and $y_j^{[\varkappa_j]}$ denotes $y_j$ repeated $\varkappa_j$ times. Using the decomposition of the generating function into partial fractions we represent such polynomials in the form \[ \operatorname{h}_m(y_1^{[\varkappa_1]},\ldots,y_n^{[\varkappa_n]}) =\sum_{j=1}^n \sum_{r=1}^{\varkappa_j} \binom{r+m-1}{r-1} A_{y,\varkappa,j,r} y_j^m, \] where $A_{y,\varkappa,j,r}$ are some coefficients that do not depend on $m$. We also provide an alternative proof using the inverse of the confluent Vandermonde matrix.
Explicit formulae for generalized Stirling and Eulerian numbers
In this article we generalize the $q$-difference operator due to Carlitz in order to derive explicit sum formulae for several extensions of Stirling numbers of the second kind, including complete homogeneous symmetric functions, complementary symmetric functions, $r$-Whitney numbers and elliptic analogues of rook, Stirling and Lah numbers. Furthermore, we generalize Carlitz' $q$-Eulerian numbers to a Lagrange polynomial extension. We define them by generalizing Worpitzky's identity appropriately, and derive a recursion and an explicit sum formulae. Special cases include $r$-Whitney Eulerian numbers and elliptic Eulerian numbers.
Extremal Polynomial Norms of Graphs
Recent work shows that a new family of norms on Hermitian matrices arise by evaluating the even degree complete homogeneous symmetric (CHS) polynomials on the eigenvalues of a Hermitian matrix. The CHS norm of a graph is then defined by evaluating the even degree CHS polynomials on the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of a graph. The fact that these norms are defined in terms of eigenvalues (as opposed to singular values) ensures they can distinguish between graphs that other norms cannot. In addition, we prove that the CHS norms are minimized over all connected graphs by the path and maximized over all connected graphs by the complete graph. Finally, we prove that the CHS norms are minimized over all trees by the path and maximized over all trees by the star. Our paper is intended for a wide mathematical audience and we assume no prior knowledge about graphs or symmetric polynomials.
Descent representations and colored quasisymmetric functions
The quasisymmetric generating function of the set of permutations whose inverses have a fixed descent set is known to be symmetric and Schur-positive. The corresponding representation of the symmetric group is called the descent representation. In this paper, we provide an extension of this result to colored permutation groups, where Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions are replaced by Poirier's colored quasisymmetric functions. For this purpose, we introduce a colored analogue of zigzag shapes and prove that the representations associated with these shapes coincide with colored descent representations studied by Adin, Brenti and Roichman in the case of two colors and Bagno and Biagioli in the general case. Additionally, we provide a colored analogue of MaMahon's alternating formula which expresses ribbon Schur functions in the basis of complete homogeneous symmetric functions.
Inequalities among Symmetric Polynomial Functions: Counter-examples and New Conjectures
Inequalities among symmetric polynomial functions are fundamental questions in mathematics and have various applications in science and engineering. This paper investigates a beautiful and inspiring conjecture, proposed by Cuttler, Greene and Skandera in 2011, on inequalities among the complete homogeneous symmetric polynomial function $H_{n,λ}$: It states that the inequality $H_{n,λ}\leq H_{n,μ}$ implies majorization order $λ\preceqμ$. The conjecture is a close analogy with other known results on Muirhead-type inequalities. In 2021, Heaton and Shankar disproved the conjecture by showing a counterexample for number of variables $n=3$ and degree $d=8$. They then asked whether the conjecture is true when $n$ is sufficiently large. In this paper, we show, by a family of counter-examples, that the conjecture does not hold for any $n$ and any $d$ as long as $n\geq2$ and $d\geq8$. Based on the insights gained from the counter-examples, we propose a new conjecture for the inequality $H_{n,λ}\leq H_{n,μ}$.
Complete flagged homogeneous polynomials
We introduce a new basis for the polynomial ring which lifts the complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials while retaining representation theoretic significance. Using a specialized RSK algorithm we give an explicit nonnegative expansion into key polynomials and, generalizing the special rim hook tabloids of Eğecioğlu and Remmel, give an explicit signed expansion for key polynomials into this new basis.
Norms on Complex Matrices Induced by Random Vectors
We introduce a family of norms on the $n \times n$ complex matrices. These norms arise from a probabilistic framework, and their construction and validation involve probability theory, partition combinatorics, and trace polynomials in noncommuting variables. As a consequence, we obtain a generalization of Hunter's positivity theorem for the complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials.
Extended commonality of paths and cycles via Schur convexity

A graph $H$ is \emph{common} if the number of monochromatic copies of $H$ in a 2-edge-colouring of the complete graph $K_n$ is asymptotically minimised by the random colouring, or equivalently, $t_H(W)+t_H(1-W)\geq 2^{1-e(H)}$ holds for every graphon $W:[0,1]^2\rightarrow [0,1]$, where $t_H(.)$ denotes the homomorphism density of the graph $H$. Paths and cycles being common is one of the earliest cornerstones in extremal graph theory, due to Mulholland and Smith (1959), Goodman (1959), and Sidorenko (1989).
We prove a graph homomorphism inequality that extends the commonality of paths and cycles. Namely, $t_H(W)+t_H(1-W)\geq t_{K_2}(W)^{e(H)} +t_{K_2}(1-W)^{e(H)}$ whenever $H$ is a path or a cycle and $W:[0,1]^2\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a bounded symmetric measurable function.
This answers a question of Sidorenko from 1989, who proved a slightly weaker result for even-length paths to prove the commonality of odd cycles. Furthermore, it also settles a recent conjecture of Behague, Morrison, and Noel in a strong form, who asked if the inequality holds for graphons $W$ and odd cycles $H$. Our proof uses Schur convexity of complete homogeneous symmetric functions, which may be of independent interest.

We prove a `Whitney' presentation, and a `Coulomb branch' presentation, for the torus equivariant quantum K theory of the Grassmann manifold $\mathrm{Gr}(k;n)$, inspired from physics, and stated in an earlier paper. The first presentation is obtained by quantum deforming the product of the Hirzebruch $λ_y$ classes of the tautological bundles. In physics, the $λ_y$ classes arise as certain Wilson line operators. The second presentation is obtained from the Coulomb branch equations involving the partial derivatives of a twisted superpotential from supersymmetric gauge theory. This is closest to a presentation obtained by Gorbounov and Korff, utilizing integrable systems techniques. Algebraically, we relate the Coulomb and Whitney presentations utilizing transition matrices from the (equivariant) Grothendieck polynomials to the (equivariant) complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials. Along the way, we calculate K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of wedge powers of the tautological bundles on $\mathrm{Gr}(k;n)$, using the `quantum=classical' statement.
Lattice paths and negatively indexed weight-dependent binomial coefficients
In 1992, Loeb considered a natural extension of the binomial coefficients to negative entries and gave a combinatorial interpretation in terms of hybrid sets. He showed that many of the fundamental properties of binomial coefficients continue to hold in this extended setting. Recently, Formichella and Straub showed that these results can be extended to the $q$-binomial coefficients with arbitrary integer values and extended the work of Loeb further by examining arithmetic properties of the $q$-binomial coefficients. In this paper, we give an alternative combinatorial interpretation in terms of lattice paths and consider an extension of the more general weight-dependent binomial coefficients, first defined by the second author, to arbitrary integer values. Remarkably, many of the results of Loeb, Formichella and Straub continue to hold in the general weighted setting. We also examine important special cases of the weight-dependent binomial coefficients, including ordinary, $q$- and elliptic binomial coefficients as well as elementary and complete homogeneous symmetric functions.

We introduce a remarkable new family of norms on the space of $n \times n$ complex matrices. These norms arise from the combinatorial properties of symmetric functions, and their construction and validation involve probability theory, partition combinatorics, and trace polynomials in noncommuting variables. Our norms enjoy many desirable analytic and algebraic properties, such as an elegant determinantal interpretation and the ability to distinguish certain graphs that other matrix norms cannot. Furthermore, they give rise to new dimension-independent tracial inequalities. Their potential merits further investigation.

Extending the elementary and complete homogeneous symmetric functions, we introduce the truncated homogeneous symmetric function $h_λ^{\dd}$ in $(\ref{THSF})$ for any integer partition $λ$, and show that the transition matrix from $h_λ^{\dd}$ to the power sum symmetric functions $p_λ$ is given by \[M(h^{\dd},p)=M'(p,m)z^{-1}D^{\dd},\] where $D^{\dd}$ and $z$ are nonsingular diagonal matrices. Consequently, $\{h_λ^{\dd}\}$ forms a basis of the ring $Λ$ of symmetric functions. In addition, we show that the generating function $H^{\dd}(t)=\ssum_{n\ge 0}h_n^{\dd}(x)t^n$ satisfies \[ω(H^{\dd}(t))=\left(H^{\dd}(-t)\right)^{-1},\] where $ω$ is the involution of $Λ$ sending each elementary symmetric function $e_λ$ to the complete homogeneous symmetric function $h_λ$.

We employ the fact certain divided differences can be written as weighted means of B-splines and hence are positive. These divided differences include the complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials of even degree $2p$, the positivity of which is a classical result by D. B. Hunter. We extend Hunter's result to complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials of fractional degree, which are defined via Jacobi's bialternant formula. We show in particular that these polynomials have positive real part for real degrees $μ$ with $|μ-2p|< 1/2$. We also prove a positivity criterion for linear combinations of the classical complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials and a sufficient criterion for the positivity of linear combinations of products of such polynomials.
A basis for a quotient of symmetric polynomials
Consider the ring $\mathcal{S}$ of symmetric polynomials in $k$ variables over an arbitrary base ring $\mathbf{k}$. Fix $k$ scalars $a_{1},a_{2},\ldots,a_{k}\in\mathbf{k}$. Let $I$ be the ideal of $\mathcal{S}$ generated by $h_{n-k+1}-a_{1},h_{n-k+2}-a_{2},\ldots,h_{n}-a_{k}$, where $h_{i}$ is the $i$-th complete homogeneous symmetric polynomial. The quotient ring $\mathcal{S}/I$ generalizes both the usual and the quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian. We show that $\mathcal{S}/I$ has a $\mathbf{k}$-module basis consisting of (residue classes of) Schur polynomials fitting into an $\left( n-k\right) \times k$-rectangle; and that its multiplicative structure constants satisfy the same $S_3$-symmetry as those of the Grassmannian cohomology. We prove a Pieri rule and a "rim hook algorithm", and conjecture a positivity property generalizing that of Gromov-Witten invariants. We construct two further bases of $\mathcal{S}/I$ as well. We also study the quotient of the whole polynomial ring (not just the symmetric polynomials) by the ideal generated by the same $k$ polynomials as $I$.
