Rook theory, normal ordering in the $q$-deformed Ore algebra and the polynomial generalization
For words in the variables $X$ and $Y$ satisfying the commutation relation of the $q$-deformed generalized Ore algebra, $XY-qYX= μI + νY$, we show that the corresponding normal ordering coefficients can be given an interpretation in terms of mixed placements of rooks and files. In particular, the associated $q$-deformed Ore-Stirling and Ore-Lah numbers are treated in detail. We show that the $q$-deformed Ore-Stirling numbers (resp., $q$-deformed Ore-Lah numbers) are given as mixed placement numbers of rooks and files on the staircase board (resp., Laguerre board). Using this combinatorial interpretation, their recurrence relations are derived. In addition, the normal ordered form of the binomial $(X+Y)^m$ in the $q$-deformed generalized Ore algebra is determined. These considerations are then extended to the $q$-deformed polynomial Weyl algebra generated by $X$ and $Y$ satisfying $XY-qYX=f(Y)$ for some polynomial $f\in \mathbb{C}[Y]$. In particular, associated $q$-deformed polynomial Stirling and Lah numbers are introduced and their properties studied. The normal ordered form of the binomial is also extended to the $q$-deformed polynomial Weyl algebra.

A unified planar network approach to total positivity of combinatorial matrices and real-rootedness of polynomials
We present a common sufficient condition for the total positivity of combinatorial triangles and their reversals, as well as the real-rootedness of generating functions of the rows. The proof technique is to construct a unified planar network that represent the matrix, its reversal, and the Toeplitz matrices of rows, respectively, when selecting different sets of sources and sinks. These results can be applied to the exponential Riordan arrays, the iteration matrices and the $n$-recursive matrices. As consequences, we prove the total positivity and real-rootedness properties associated to many well-known combinatorial numbers, including the Stirling numbers of both kinds (of type A and type B), the Lah numbers, the idempotent numbers, the Delannoy numbers, and the derangement numbers of type A and type B.

Log-concavity of rows of triangular arrays satisfying a certain super-recurrence
Recurrences of the form \begin{equation*} T(n,k) = (αn+βk +γ) \ T(n-1,k) + (α'n+β'k+γ')\ T(n-1,k-1)+δ_{n,0}δ_{k,0}. \end{equation*} show up as the recurrence for many well-studied combinatorial sequences such as the Stirling numbers of first and second kind, the Lah numbers, Eulerian numbers etc. Recently, many of these sequences have received generalisations that obey a recurrence of the form \begin{equation*} T(n,k) = (αn+βk +γ)^l \ T(n-1,k) + (α'n+β'k+γ')^l\ T(n-1,k-1)+δ_{n,0}δ_{k,0}. \end{equation*} where $l$ is a positive integer. Many of these generalised sequences also satisfy properties such as unimodality, log-concavity, gamma-nonnegativity, real-rootedness that the original sequences satisfy. In this article, we give sufficient conditions for rows of triangular arrays, arising from the recurrence stated above, to be log-concave. We show that our sufficient condition is satisfied by many of the classical examples, thereby giving a new unified approach to proving their log-concavity. This sufficient condition also confirms a conjecture of Tankosic about the log-concavity of generalised Lah numbers. Our main technique will be to interpret the triangular array $(T(n,k))$ as weighted lattice paths and produce an injection that is increasing in weight. Finally, we introduce a two-parameter generalisation of the Eulerian numbers analogous to the generalised Stirling and Lah counterparts. We prove that this sequence is palindromic and make some remarks about their gamma-nonnegativity and real-rootedness.

Explicit formulae for generalized Stirling and Eulerian numbers
In this article we generalize the $q$-difference operator due to Carlitz in order to derive explicit sum formulae for several extensions of Stirling numbers of the second kind, including complete homogeneous symmetric functions, complementary symmetric functions, $r$-Whitney numbers and elliptic analogues of rook, Stirling and Lah numbers. Furthermore, we generalize Carlitz' $q$-Eulerian numbers to a Lagrange polynomial extension. We define them by generalizing Worpitzky's identity appropriately, and derive a recursion and an explicit sum formulae. Special cases include $r$-Whitney Eulerian numbers and elliptic Eulerian numbers.
Multinomial random combinatorial structures and $r$-versions of Stirling, Eulerian and Lah numbers
We introduce multinomial and $r$-variants of several classic objects of combinatorial probability, such as the random recursive and Hoppe trees, random set partitions and compositions, the Chinese restaurant process, Feller's coupling, and some others. Just as various classic combinatorial numbers - like Stirling, Eulerian and Lah numbers - emerge as essential ingredients defining the distributions of the mentioned processes, the so-called $r$-versions of these numbers appear in exact distributional formulas for the multinomial and $r$-counterparts. This approach allows us to offer a concise probabilistic interpretation for various identities involving $r$-versions of these combinatorial numbers, which were either unavailable or meaningful only for specific values of the parameter $r$. We analyze the derived distributions for fixed-size structures and establish distributional limit theorems as the size tends to infinity. Utilizing the aforementioned generalized Stirling numbers of both kinds, we define and analyze $(r,s)$-Lah distributions, which have arisen in the existing literature on combinatorial probability in various contexts.

Totally non-negativity of a family of change-of-basis matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let ${\bf a}=(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_n)$ and ${\bf e}=(e_1, e_2, \ldots, e_n)$ be real sequences. Denote by $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ the $(n+1)\times(n+1)$ matrix whose $(m,k)$ entry ($m, k \in \{0,\ldots, n\}$) is the coefficient of the polynomial $(x-a_1)\cdots(x-a_k)$ in the expansion of $(x-e_1)\cdots(x-e_m)$ as a linear combination of the polynomials $1, x-a_1, \ldots, (x-a_1)\cdots(x-a_m)$. By appropriate choice of ${\bf a}$ and ${\bf e}$ the matrix $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ can encode many familiar doubly-indexed combinatorial sequences, such as binomial coefficients, Stirling numbers of both kinds, Lah numbers and central factorial numbers. In all four of these examples, $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ enjoys the property of total non-negativity -- the determinants of all its square submatrices are non-negative. This leads to a natural question: when, in general, is $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ totally non-negative? Galvin and Pacurar found a simple condition on ${\bf e}$ that characterizes total non-negativity of $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ when ${\bf a}$ is non-decreasing. Here we fully extend this result. For arbitrary real sequences ${\bf a}$ and ${\bf e}$, we give a condition that can be checked in $O(n^2)$ time that determines whether $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ is totally non-negative. When $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ is totally non-negative, we witness this with a planar network whose weights are non-negative and whose path matrix is $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$. When it is not, we witness this with an explicit negative minor.
On Parking Functions and The Tower of Hanoi
Published • View PublicationBIB
The displacement of a parking function measures the total difference between where cars want to park and where they ultimately park. In this article, we prove that the set of parking functions of length $n$ with displacement one is in bijection with the set of ideal states in the famous Tower of Hanoi game with $n+1$ disks and $n+1$ pegs, both sets being enumerated by the Lah numbers.

Cyclic and Linear Graph Partitions and Normal Ordering
The Stirling number of a simple graph is the number of partitions of its vertex set into a specific number of non-empty independent sets. In 2015, Engbers et al. showed that the coefficients in the normal ordering of a word $w$ in the alphabet $\{x,D\}$ subject to the relation $Dx=xD+1$ are equal to the Stirling number of certain graphs constructed from $w$. In this paper, we introduce graphical versions of the Stirling numbers of the first kind and the Lah numbers and show how they occur as coefficients in other normal ordering settings. Identities involving their $q$-analogues are also obtained.

Convolutions for Stirling numbers, Lah numbers, and binomial coefficients
We present various identities in the form of convolutions involving Stirling numbers of both kinds, Lah numbers, and binomial coefficients. Certain convolution polynomials are discussed also. The proofs are based on several series transformation formulas.
Complete and incomplete Bell polynomials associated with Lah-Bell numbers and polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The nth r-extended Lah-Bell number is defined as the number of ways a set with $n+r$ elements can be partitioned into ordered blocks such that r distinguished elements have to be in distinct ordered blocks. The aim of this paper is to introduce incomplete r-extended Lah-Bell polynomials and complete $r$-extended Lah-Bell polynomials respectively as multivariate versions of $r$-Lah numbers and the r-extended Lah-Bell numbers and to investigate some properties and identities for these polynomials. From these investigations, we obtain some expressions for the r-Lah numbers and the r-extended Lah-Bell numbers as finite sums.
Generalized Ordered Set Partitions
In this paper, we consider ordered set partitions obtained by imposing conditions on the size of the lists, and such that the first $r$ elements are in distinct blocks, respectively. We introduce a generalization of the Lah numbers. For this new combinatorial sequence we derive its exponential generating function, some recurrence relations, and combinatorial identities. We prove and present results using combinatorial arguments, generating functions, the symbolic method and Riordan arrays. For some specific cases we provide a combinatorial interpretation for the inverse matrix of the generalized Lah numbers by means of two families of posets.

In this paper, we derive formulas for the translated Whitney-Lah numbers and show that they are generalizations of already-existing identities of the classical Lah numbers. q-analogues of the said formulas are also obtained for the case of the translated q-Whitney numbers.

Hypersimplices are Ehrhart Positive
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the Ehrhart polynomial of hypersimplices. It is proved that these polynomials have positive coefficients and we give a combinatorial formula for each of them. This settles a problem posed by Stanley and also proves that uniform matroids are Ehrhart positive, an important and yet unsolved particular case of a conjecture posed by De Loera et al. To this end, we introduce a new family of numbers that we call weighted Lah numbers and study some of their properties.
Analogies of the Qi formula for some Dowling type numbers
In the paper, the authors establish explicit formulas for the Dowling numbers and their generalizations in terms of generalizations of the Lah numbers and the Stirling numbers of the second kind. These results gen- eralize the Qi formula for the Bell numbers in terms of the Lah numbers and the Stirling numbers of the second kind.

Total non-negativity of some combinatorial matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Many combinatorial matrices --- such as those of binomial coefficients, Stirling numbers of both kinds, and Lah numbers --- are known to be totally non-negative, meaning that all minors (determinants of square submatrices) are non-negative. The examples noted above can be placed in a common framework: for each one there is a non-decreasing sequence $(a_1, a_2, \ldots)$, and a sequence $(e_1, e_2, \ldots)$, such that the $(m,k)$-entry of the matrix is the coefficient of the polynomial $(x-a_1)\cdots(x-a_k)$ in the expansion of $(x-e_1)\cdots(x-e_m)$ as a linear combination of the polynomials $1, x-a_1, \ldots, (x-a_1)\cdots(x-a_m)$. We consider this general framework. For a non-decreasing sequence $(a_1, a_2, \ldots)$ we establish necessary and sufficient conditions on the sequence $(e_1, e_2, \ldots)$ for the corresponding matrix to be totally non-negative. As corollaries we obtain totally non-negativity of matrices of rook numbers of Ferrers boards, and of graph Stirling numbers of chordal graphs.

On xD-Generalizations of Stirling Numbers and Lah Numbers via Graphs and Rooks
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies the generalizations of the Stirling numbers of both kinds and the Lah numbers in association with the normal order problem in the Weyl algebra $W=\langle x,D|Dx-xD=1\rangle$. Any word $ω\in W$ with $m$ $x$'s and $n$ $D$'s can be expressed in the normally ordered form $ω=x^{m-n}\sum_{k\ge 0} {ω\brace {k}} x^{k}D^{k}$, where ${ω\brace {k}}$ is known as the Stirling number of the second kind for the word $ω$. This study considers the expansions of restricted words $ω$ in $W$ over the sequences $\{(xD)^{k}\}_{k\ge 0}$ and $\{xD^{k}x^{k-1}\}_{k\ge 0}$. Interestingly, the coefficients in individual expansions turn out to be generalizations of the Stirling numbers of the first kind and the Lah numbers. The coefficients will be determined through enumerations of some combinatorial structures linked to the words $ω$, involving decreasing forest decompositions of quasi-threshold graphs and non-attacking rook placements on Ferrers boards. Extended to $q$-analogues, weighted refinements of the combinatorial interpretations are also investigated for words in the $q$-deformed Weyl algebra.

Restricted Stirling and Lah number matrices and their inverses
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given $R \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ let ${n \brace k}_R$, ${n \brack k}_R$, and $L(n,k)_R$ be the number of ways of partitioning the set $[n]$ into $k$ non-empty subsets, cycles and lists, respectively, with each block having cardinality in $R$. We refer to these as the $R$-restricted Stirling numbers of the second and first kind and the $R$-restricted Lah numbers, respectively. Note that the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind and first kind, and Lah numbers are ${n \brace k} = {n \brace k}_{\mathbb{N}}$, ${n \brack k} = {n \brack k}_{\mathbb{N}} $ and $L(n,k) = L(n,k)_{\mathbb{N}}$, respectively. The matrices $[{n \brace k}]_{n,k \geq 1}$, $[{n \brack k}]_{n,k \geq 1}$ and $[L(n,k)]_{n,k \geq 1}$ have inverses $[(-1)^{n-k}{n \brack k}]_{n,k \geq 1}$, $[(-1)^{n-k} {n \brace k}]_{n,k \geq 1}$ and $[(-1)^{n-k} L(n,k)]_{n,k \geq 1}$ respectively. The inverse matrices $[{n \brace k}_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$, $[{n \brack k}_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ and $[L(n,k)_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ exist if and only if $1 \in R$. We express each entry of each of these matrices as the difference between the cardinalities of two explicitly defined families of labeled forests. In particular the entries of $[{n \brace k}_{[r]}]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ have combinatorial interpretations, affirmatively answering a question of Choi, Long, Ng and Smith from 2006. If $1,2 \in R$ and if for all $n \in R$ with $n$ odd and $n \geq 3$, we have $n \pm 1 \in R$, we additionally show that each entry of $[{n \brace k}_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$, $[{n \brack k}_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ and $[L(n,k)_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ is up to an explicit sign the cardinality of a single explicitly defined family of labeled forests. Our results also provide combinatorial interpretations of the $k$th Whitney numbers of the first and second kinds of $Π_n^{1,d}$, the poset of partitions of $[n]$ that have each part size congruent to $1$ mod $d$.

Rhombic alternative tableaux and assemblées of permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce the rhombic alternative tableaux, whose weight generating functions provide combinatorial formulae to compute the steady state probabilities of the two-species ASEP. In the ASEP, there are two species of particles, one heavy and one light, hopping right and left on a one-dimensional finite lattice with open boundaries. Parameters $α$, $β$, and $q$ describe the hopping probabilities. The rhombic alternative tableaux are enumerated by the Lah numbers, which also enumerate certain assemblées of permutations. We describe a bijection between the rhombic alternative tableaux and these assemblées. We also provide an insertion algorithm that gives a weight generating function for the assemblées. Combined, these results give a bijective proof for the weight generating function for the rhombic alternative tableaux, which is also the partition function of the two-species ASEP at $q=1$.

Multiple analogues of certain families of combinatorial numbers are recently constructed by the author in terms of well poised Macdonald functions, and some of their fundamental properties are developed. In this paper, we present combinatorial formulas for the well poised Macdonald functions, the multiple binomial coefficients, the multiple bracket function, and the multiple Catalan and Lah numbers.
