Delannoy--Steinhaus triangles over $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$: weight spectrum, balanced triangles, and extremal values
A Delannoy--Steinhaus triangle is obtained from a finite sequence by a recurrence governed by the Delannoy numbers. We introduce this construction over $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ and study its weight distribution. The relevant Delannoy coefficients are all odd, which reduces every entry to the parity of a consecutive interval of the generating sequence. Encoding these interval parities by prefix parities yields a weight formula depending only on the numbers of zeros and ones in the prefix-parity sequence. We use this formula to determine the complete weight spectrum and the exact multiplicity of each weight. As a consequence, we characterize and enumerate the balanced triangles: a balanced triangle generated by a binary sequence of length $n$ exists if and only if $n+1$ is a perfect square. We also determine the canonical-vector weights, the minimum nonzero weight, the {second-smallest nonzero weight}, the maximum weight, and the average weight.
Uniform estimates for Delannoy numbers and dimension-free estimates for discrete maximal functions over cross-polytopes
We prove a uniform upper and lower bound for Delannoy numbers. This is achieved by using the representation of Delannoy numbers as the number of lattice points in high-dimensional cross-polytopes (also known as hyper-octahedrons or $\ell^1$ balls) and proving a uniform (dimension-free) count for these lattice points. Using this count, we establish dimension-free estimates for discrete maximal functions over cross-polytopes. By proving a comparison principle with the continuous setting, we obtain a dimension-free estimate on all $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ spaces for radii $R>C d^{3/2}.$ We also treat the full maximal function on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ for small radii $R\le d^{1-\varepsilon}$ and the dyadic maximal function for any radii.
A unified planar network approach to total positivity of combinatorial matrices and real-rootedness of polynomials
We present a common sufficient condition for the total positivity of combinatorial triangles and their reversals, as well as the real-rootedness of generating functions of the rows. The proof technique is to construct a unified planar network that represent the matrix, its reversal, and the Toeplitz matrices of rows, respectively, when selecting different sets of sources and sinks. These results can be applied to the exponential Riordan arrays, the iteration matrices and the $n$-recursive matrices. As consequences, we prove the total positivity and real-rootedness properties associated to many well-known combinatorial numbers, including the Stirling numbers of both kinds (of type A and type B), the Lah numbers, the idempotent numbers, the Delannoy numbers, and the derangement numbers of type A and type B.
Congruences for sums of Delannoy numbers and polynomials
In this paper, we apply the power-partible reduction to study arithmetic properties of sums involving Delannoy numbers $D_k$ and polynomials $D_k(z)$. Let $v\in\bN$ and $p$ be an odd prime. It is proved that, for any $z\in\bZ\setminus\{0,-1\}$, there exist $c_v\in z^{-v}\bZ[z]$ and $\tilde{c}_v\in (z+1)^{-v}\bZ[z]$, both free of $p$ and can be determined mechanically, such that \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)^{2v}D_k(z)\equiv c_v \left(\frac{-z}{p}\right) \pmod {p} \end{equation*} if $\gcd(p,z)=1$ and \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(-1)^k(2k+1)^{2v}D_k(z)\equiv \tilde{c}_v \left(\frac{z+1}{p}\right) \pmod {p} \end{equation*} if $\gcd(p,z+1)=1$. Here $(-)$ denotes the Legendre symbol.
When $n$ is a power of $2$, we find there exist odd integers $ρ_v$ and even integers $\tildeρ_v$, both independent of $n$ and can be determined mechanically, such that \[ \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)^{2v+1}D_k\equiv ρ_v n \pmod {n^3} \] and \[ \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(-1)^k(2k+1)^{2v+1}D_k\equiv \tildeρ_v n^2 \pmod {n^3}. \] The case $v=1$ in the last congruence confirms a conjecture of Guo and Zeng in 2012.

The weighted Delannoy numbers are defined by the recurrence relation $f_{m,n}=αf_{m-1,n}+ βf_{m,n-1}+ γf_{m-1,n-1}$ if $m n>0 $, with $f_{m,n}=α^m β^n$ if $n m=0$. In this work, we study a generalization of these numbers considering the same recurrence relation but with $f_{m,n}=A^m B^n$ if $n m=0$. More particularly, we focus on the diagonal sequence $f_{n,n}$. With some ingenuity, we are able to make use of well-established methods by Pemantle and Wilson, and by Melczer in order to determine its asymptotic behavior in the case $A,B,α,β,γ\geq 0$. In addition, we also study its P-recursivity with the help of symbolic computation tools.
Congruences involving Delannoy numbers and Schröder numbers
The central Delannoy numbers $D_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n}{k}\binom{n+k}{k}$ and the little Schröder number $s_n=\sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{1}{n}\binom{n}{k}\binom{n}{k-1}2^{n-k}$ are important quantities. In this paper, we confirm \[\frac{2}{3n(n+1)}\sum_{k=1}^n (-1)^{n-k}k^2D_kD_{k-1}\ \text{and}\ \ \frac 1n\sum_{k=1}^n (-1)^{n-k}(4k^2+2k-1)D_{k-1}s_k\]are positive odd integers for all $n=1,2,3,\cdots$. We also show that for any prime number $p>3$, \[\sum_{k=1}^{p-1} (-1)^kk^2D_kD_{k-1}\ \equiv\ -\frac56p \pmod{p^2}\] and \[\sum_{k=1}^p (-1)^k(4k^2+2k-1)D_{k-1}s_k\ \equiv\ -4p \pmod{p^2}\text{.}\] Moreover, define \begin{equation*} s_n(x)=\sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{1}{n}\binom{n}{k}\binom{n}{k-1}x^{k-1}(x+1)^{n-k}, \end{equation*} for any $n\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ is even we have \begin{equation*} \frac{4}{n(n+1)(n+2)(1+2x)^3}\sum_{k=1}^{n}k(k+1)(k+2)s_k(x)s_{k+1}(x)\in\mathbb{Z}[x]. \end{equation*}
Off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond of odd order

We study the enumeration of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds in two directions: (1) with one boundary defect, and (2) with maximally-many zeroes on the diagonal. In the first direction, we prove a symmetry property which states that the numbers of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond of order $2n-1$ are equal when the boundary defect is at the $k$th position and the $(2n-k)$th position on the boundary, respectively. This symmetry property proves a special case of a recent conjecture by Behrend, Fischer, and Koutschan.
In the second direction, a Pfaffian formula is obtained for the number of "nearly" off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds, where the entries of the Pfaffian satisfy a simple recurrence relation. The numbers of domino tilings mentioned in the above two directions do not seem to have a simple product formula, but we show that these numbers satisfy simple matrix equations in which the entries of the matrix are given by Delannoy numbers. The proof of these results involves the method of non-intersecting lattice paths and a modification of Stembridge's Pfaffian formula for families of non-intersecting lattice paths. Finally, we propose conjectures concerning the log-concavity and asymptotic behavior of the number of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds.
Boundary dents, the arctic circle and the arctic ellipse
The original motivation for this paper goes back to the mid-1990's, when James Propp was interested in natural situations when the number of domino tilings of a region increases if some of its unit squares are deleted. Guided in part by the intuition one gets from earlier work on parallels between the number of tilings of a region with holes and the 2D Coulomb energy of the corresponding system of electric charges, we consider Aztec diamond regions with unit square defects along two adjacent sides. We show that for large regions, if these defects are at fixed distances from a corner, the ratio between the number of domino tilings of the Aztec diamond with defects and the number of tilings of the entire Aztec diamond approaches a Delannoy number.
When the locations of the defects are not fixed but instead approach given points on the boundary of the scaling limit $S$ (a square) of the Aztec diamonds, we prove that, provided the line segment connecting these points is outside the circle inscribed in $S$, this ratio has the same asymptotics as the Delannoy number corresponding to the locations of the defects; if the segment crosses the circle, the asymptotics is radically different. We use this to deduce (under the assumption that an arctic curve exists) that the arctic curve for domino tilings of Aztec diamonds is the circle inscribed in $S$. We also discuss counterparts of this phenomenon for lozenge tilings of hexagons.
On the period of Pell-Narayana sequence in some groups
In this paper, the Pell-Narayana sequence modulo m is studied. The paper outlines the definition of Pell-Narayana numbers and some of their combinatorial links with Eulerian, Catalan and Delannoy numbers and other special functions. From the definition, the Pell-Narayana orbit of a 2-generator group for a generating pair $(x, y) \in G$ is defined, so that the lengths of the period of the Pell-Narayana orbit can be examined. These yield in turn the Pell-Narayana lengths of the polyhedral group and the binary polyhedral group for the generating pair $(x,y)$ and associated properties. Also, the period of the Pell-Narayana orbit of the groups $Q_8$, $Q_8 \times\mathbb{Z}_{2m} $ and $Q_8 \times_φ\mathbb{Z}_{2m} $ for $m \geq 3$ were obtained.
Realizability of Some Combinatorial Sequences

A sequence $a=(a_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ of non-negative integers is called realizable if there is a self-map $T:X\to X$ on a set $X$ such that $a_n$ is equal to the number of periodic points of $T$ in $X$ of (not necessarily exact) period $n$, for all $n\geq1$. The sequence $a$ is called almost realizable if there exists a positive integer $m$ such that $(ma_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ is realizable. In this article, we show that certain wide classes of integer sequences are realizable, which contain many famous combinatorial sequences, such as the sequences of Apéry numbers of both kinds, central Delannoy numbers, Franel numbers, Domb numbers, Zagier numbers, and central trinomial coefficients. We also show that the sequences of Catalan numbers, Motzkin numbers, and large and small Schröder numbers are not almost realizable.
Combinatorial aspects of sandpile models on wheel and fan graphs

We study combinatorial aspects of the sandpile model on wheel and fan graphs, seeking bijective characterisations of the model's recurrent configurations on these families. For wheel graphs, we exhibit a bijection between these recurrent configurations and the set of subgraphs of the cycle graph which maps the level of the configuration to the number of edges of the subgraph. This bijection relies on two key ingredients. The first consists in considering a stochastic variant of the standard Abelian sandpile model (ASM), rather than the ASM itself. The second ingredient is a mapping from a given recurrent state to a canonical minimal recurrent state, exploiting similar ideas to previous studies of the ASM on complete bipartite graphs and Ferrers graphs. We also show that on the wheel graph with $2n$ vertices, the number of recurrent states with level $n$ is given by the first differences of the central Delannoy numbers. Finally, using similar tools, we exhibit a bijection between the set of recurrent configurations of the ASM on fan graphs and the set of subgraphs of the path graph containing the right-most vertex of the path. We show that these sets are also equinumerous with certain lattice paths, which we name Kimberling paths after the author of the corresponding entry in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

We present a formula that expresses the Hankel determinants of a linear combination of length $d+1$ of moments of orthogonal polynomials in terms of a $d\times d$ determinant of the orthogonal polynomials. This formula exists somehow hidden in the folklore of the theory of orthogonal polynomials but deserves to be better known, and be presented correctly and with full proof. We present four fundamentally different proofs, one that uses classical formulae from the theory of orthogonal polynomials, one that uses a vanishing argument and is due to Elouafi [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 431} (2015), 1253-1274] (but given in an incomplete form there), one that is inspired by random matrix theory and is due to Brézin and Hikami [Comm. Math. Phys. 214 (2000), 111-135], and one that uses (Dodgson) condensation. We give two applications of the formula. In the first application, we explain how to compute such Hankel determinants in a singular case. The second application concerns the linear recurrence of such Hankel determinants for a certain class of moments that covers numerous classical combinatorial sequences, including Catalan numbers, Motzkin numbers, central binomial coefficients, central trinomial coefficients, central Delannoy numbers, Schröder numbers, Riordan numbers, and Fine numbers.

In the paper, by a general and fundamental, but non-extensively circulated, formula for derivatives of a ratio of two differentiable functions and by a recursive relation of the Hessenberg determinant, the author finds a new determinantal expression and a new recursive relation of the Delannoy numbers. Consequently, the author derives a recursive relation for computing central Delannoy numbers in terms of related Delannoy numbers.
On Restricted Ternary Words and Insets
We investigate combinatorial properties of a kind of insets we defined in an earlier paper, interpreting them now in terms of restricted ternary words. This allows us to give new combinatorial interpretations of a number of known integer sequences, namely the coefficients of Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds, Fibonacci numbers, Delannoy numbers, asymmetric Delannoy numbers, Sulanke numbers, coordinating sequences for some cubic lattices, crystal ball sequences for some cubic lattices, and others. We also obtain several new properties of said insets. In particular, we derive three generating functions when two of three variables are constant.
At the end, we state 40 combinatorial configurations counted by our words.

In this paper we show that many well-known counting coefficients, including the Catalan numbers, the Motzkin numbers, the central binomial coefficients, the central Delannoy numbers are Hausdorff moment sequences in a unified approach. In particular we answer a conjecture of Liang at al. which such numbers have unique representing measures. The smallest interval including the support of representing measure is explicitly found. Subsequences of Catalan-like numbers are also considered. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a pattern of subsequences that if sequences are the Stieltjes Catalan-like numbers, then their subsequences are Stieltjes Catalan-like numbers. Moreover, a representing measure of a linear combination of consecutive Catalan-like numbers is studied.

In this paper, we present some criteria for the $2$-$q$-log-convexity and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of combinatorial sequences, which can be regarded as the first column of certain infinite triangular array $[A_{n,k}(q)]_{n,k\geq0}$ of polynomials in $q$ with nonnegative coefficients satisfying the recurrence relation $$A_{n,k}(q)=A_{n-1,k-1}(q)+g_k(q)A_{n-1,k}(q)+h_{k+1}(q)A_{n-1,k+1}(q).$$ Those criterions can also be presented by continued fractions and generating functions. These allow a unified treatment of the $2$-$q$-log-convexity of alternating Eulerian polynomials, $2$-log-convexity of Euler numbers, and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of many classical polynomials, including the Bell polynomials, the Eulerian polynomials of Types $A$ and $B$, the $q$-Schröder numbers, $q$-central Delannoy numbers, the Narayana polynomials of Types $A$ and $B$, the generating functions of rows in the Catalan triangles of Aigner and Shapiro, the generating functions of rows in the large Schröder triangle, and so on, which extend many known results for $q$-log-convexity.

In a previous paper, we studied an overpartition analogue of Gaussian polynomials as the generating function for overpartitions fitting inside an $m \times n$ rectangle. Here, we add one more parameter counting the number of overlined parts, obtaining a two-parameter generalization $\overline{m+n \brack n}_{q,t}$ of Gaussian polynomials, which is also a $(q,t)$-analogue of Delannoy numbers. First we obtain finite versions of classical $q$-series identities such as the $q$-binomial theorem and the Lebesgue identity, as well as two-variable generalizations of classical identities involving Gaussian polynomials. Then, by constructing involutions, we obtain an identity involving a finite theta function and prove the $(q,t)$-log concavity of $\overline{m+n \brack n}_{q,t}$. We particularly emphasize the role of combinatorial proofs and the consequences of our results on Delannoy numbers. We conclude with some conjectures about the unimodality of $\overline{m+n \brack n}_{q,t}$.

We show that certain terminating $_{6}φ_5$ series can be factorized into a product of two $_{3}φ_{2}$ series. As applications we prove a summation formula for a product of two $q$-Delannoy numbers along with some congruences for sums involving $q$-Delannoy numbers. This confirms three recent conjectures of the second author.

Define $$D_n(x)=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2x^k(x+1)^{n-k}\ \ \ \mbox{for}\ n=0,1,2,\ldots$$ and $$s_n(x)=\sum_{k=1}^n\frac1n\binom nk\binom n{k-1}x^{k-1}(x+1)^{n-k}\ \ \ \mbox{for}\ n=1,2,3,\ldots.$$ Then $D_n(1)$ is the $n$-th central Delannoy number $D_n$, and $s_n(1)$ is the $n$-th little Schröder number $s_n$. In this paper we obtain some surprising arithmetic properties of $D_n(x)$ and $s_n(x)$. We show that $$\frac1n\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}D_k(x)s_{k+1}(x)\in\mathbb Z[x(x+1)]\ \quad\mbox{for all}\ n=1,2,3,\ldots.$$ Moreover, for any odd prime $p$ and $p$-adic integer $x\not\equiv0,-1\pmod p$, we establish the supercongruence $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}D_k(x)s_{k+1}(x)\equiv0\pmod{p^2}.$$ As an application we confirm Conjecture 5.5 in [S14a], in particular we prove that $$\frac1n\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}T_kM_k(-3)^{n-1-k}\in\mathbb Z\quad\mbox{for all}\ n=1,2,3,\ldots,$$ where $T_k$ is the $k$-th central trinomial coefficient and $M_k$ is the $k$-th Motzkin number.

Recently, Z.-W. Sun introduced two kinds of polynomials related to the Delannoy numbers, and proved some supercongruences on sums involving those polynomials. We deduce new summation formulas for squares of those polynomials and use them to prove that certain rational sums involving even powers of those polynomials are integers whenever they are evaluated at integers. This confirms two conjectures of Z.-W. Sun. We also conjecture that many of these results have neat $q$-analogues.
