Dense-core approach to the Brualdi--Hoffman--Turán problem on odd wheels
We present a unified presentation of the fixed-size adjacency-spectral extremal problem for odd wheels $W_{2k+1}$, where $k\geq2$ and $W_{2k+1}=K_1\vee C_{2k}$. The exceptional case $W_5$ and the general case $W_{2k+1}$, $k\ge3$, share the same dense-core reduction and edge-spectral stability, but have different rigidity structures. We prove that every $W_5$-free graph of sufficiently large size $m$ satisfies $ρ(G)^2-ρ(G)\le m,$ with equality precisely for $K_{n,n}$ with a perfect matching embedded in each part, where $n$ is even and $m=n^2+n$. For any fixed $k\ge3$, every $W_{2k+1}$-free graph of sufficiently large size $m$ satisfies $ρ(G)^2-(k-1)ρ(G)\le m-\binom{k}{2},$ with equality precisely for $K_k\vee qK_1$ when $m=\binom{k}{2}+kq$. Our results completely settle a conjecture proposed by Yu, Li and Peng and, via a distinct approach, further strengthen known results concerning odd cycles, friendship graphs and odd fan graphs for sufficiently large $m.$ The proof combines the edge-spectral stability theorem, residual functions and the dense-core method.
On the maximum and negative frustration indices of graphs
A signed graph is a graph with signatures ($+1$ or $-1$) on its edges. A cycle is called positive if the product of its edge signatures is positive, and a signed graph is called balanced if each cycle in it is positive. The frustration index is the minimum number of edges whose deletion makes the signed graph balanced, which is considered to be a measurement of the imbalance of the signed graph. In this paper, we compare the frustration index of the all-negative signature with the maximum frustration index of all possible signatures on the unsigned graph. We classify some families of graphs into three scenarios: the all-negative signature does not maximise the frustration index, the all-negative signature maximises the frustration index non-uniquely, and the all-negative signature maximises the frustration index uniquely. For all three scenarios, we can exhibit chordal and non-chordal graphs alike. The classes we consider include apex trees, fan graphs, wheel graphs, and complete split graphs. Moreover, for the families of fan graphs and wheel graphs, we fully characterise and count the signatures maximising the frustration index. Throughout our study, we exhibit different classes of signed graphs for which the frustration index equals the number of edge-disjoint negative triangles. Moreover, as part of our study, we are able to refute three conjectures of Zaslavsky on the frustration index.
Exact values of rainbow Turán numbers for fan graphs and even wheel graphs
An edge-colored graph is called rainbow if all its edges have distinct colors. For a fixed graph $H$, the rainbow Turán number $\exstar(n, H)$ is the maximum number of edges in a properly edge-colored graph with $n$ vertices that does not contain a rainbow subgraph isomorphic to $H$. A $t$-fan $\Ft$ ($t \geq 2$) is a graph formed by $t$ triangles sharing a common vertex. A wheel graph $\Wn$ is constructed by connecting a new vertex $x$ to all vertices of a cycle $\Cn$ with $n$ vertices. Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov, Verstraëte~({\small Combin. Probab. Comput., 2007}) showed that \[ \exstar(n, F_t) \geq \floor{\frac{n^2}{4}} + (t-1)\floor{\frac{n}{2}} \] by constructing extremal graphs for $n\not\equiv 2\pmod 4$.
In this paper, we propose such a method: for a graph $H$, the upper bound of $\exstar(n, H)$ can be analyzed using the rainbow Turán number of $H'$, where $H'$ is obtained by deleting one vertex from $H$. By applying this method, we determine the exact values of the rainbow Turán numbers for two families of graphs when the number of vertices $n$ is sufficiently large. Specifically, we obtain: (1) when $n > 230t$, \[ \exstar(n, \Ft) = \floor{\frac{n^2}{4}} + (t-1)\floor{\frac{n}{2}} - \Dn, \] where $\Dn = 1$ if $n \equiv 2 \pmod{4}$, and $\Dn = 0$ otherwise; (2) for graphs $H$ satisfying $W_{2t} \subset H \subset \Kts$ ($t \leq s$), when $n$ is sufficiently large, \[ \exstar(n, H) = \begin{cases} \floor{\frac{n^2}{4}} + \floor{\frac{(t-1)n}{2}} - \Dn & \text{if } t \text{ is odd}, \\ \floor{\frac{n^2}{4}} + \floor{\frac{(t-1)n}{2}} & \text{if } t \text{ is even}. \end{cases} \]
Inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of fan matroids
The inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial of a matroid was introduced by Gao and Xie, and the inverse $Z$-polynomial of a matroid was introduced by Ferroni, Matherne, Stevens, and Vecchi. In this paper, we study these two polynomials for fan matroids, a family of graphic matroids associated with fan graphs. We first derive the generating functions for the inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of fan matroids using their recursive definition, and then deduce the explicit formulas of these polynomials therefrom. For the inverse $Z$-polynomials of fan matroids, we obtain their generating functions using a parallel generating function approach, and further derive their explicit expansions based on these generating functions. Additionally, we provide alternative proofs for the above generating functions using the deletion formulas for inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig and inverse $Z$-polynomials. As an application of the explicit formula for inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials, we prove that the coefficients of the inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial of the fan matroid form a log-concave sequence with no internal zeros.
Fibonacci and Lucas numbers arising from two-component spanning forests of wheel graphs
In this paper, we present a constructive bijection between a conditioned spanning forest of the wheel graph $W_{n+1}$ and a spanning tree of the fan graph $F_n$. In addition, by applying the effective resistance formula obtained by Bapat and Gupta \cite{bapat-gupta}, we derive an explicit formula for the number of two-component spanning forests of $W_{n+1}$ in which two specified vertices $u$ and $v$ lie in distinct components. Based on this result, we obtain explicit formulas for the following three conditioned two-component spanning forests $F_{W_{n+1}}(v_1\mid v_2)$, $F_{W_{n+1}}(v_1\mid v_3)$, and $F_{W_{n+1}}(v_1\mid v_c)$. These formulas are $F_{W_{n+1}}(v_1\mid v_2)=2(f_{2n-1}-1)$, $F_{W_{n+1}}(v_1\mid v_3)=2(\ell_{2n-2}-3)$, $F_{W_{n+1}}(v_1\mid v_c)=f_{2n}$, where $f_i$ and $\ell_j$ denote the $i$-th Fibonacci number and $j$-th Lucas number, respectively. As these identities show, the enumerations naturally lead to formulas involving Fibonacci numbers and Lucas numbers. Taken together, these two approaches show a unified perspective. One is the constructive combinatorial bijection, and the other is the analytic method based on effective resistance. Together they provide a new integrated framework for studying the structure of spanning forests on $W_{n+1}$.
Strong Central 2-Trees with Tail Degrees {2, 3}: Structural Characterization and Uniqueness Criteria
We study strong $r$-central $2$-trees whose non-central vertices have degrees in $\{2,3\}$, focusing on the cases $r=1,2,3$. For each $r$, we derive exact degree constraints relating the maximum degree $Δ$ to the numbers of degree-$3$ and degree-$2$ tail vertices. In the unicentral case ($r=1$), we prove that the fan graph is the unique realization for all $n\ge 3$. For bicentral $2$-trees ($r=2$), we show that the number of degree-$3$ vertices is always even, establish sharp uniqueness results for $x\in\{0,2\}$, prove existence for all feasible values of $Δ$, and obtain linear lower bounds on the number of non-isomorphic realizations. For tricentral $2$-trees ($r=3$), we characterize extremal configurations, establish a divisibility constraint on the tail parameters, and prove a quadratic lower bound on the number of non-isomorphic graphs for infinitely many values of $n$. These results provide a unified structural framework for central $2$-trees with bounded tail degrees and highlight sharp transitions between rigidity and combinatorial growth.
Spectral extremal graphs for $F_6$-free graphs with even size
Let $F_l$ be the fan graph obtained by joining a vertex with a path on $l-1$ vertices. Yu, Li and Peng [Discrete Math. 346 (2023)] conjectured that if the number of edges of $G$ is $m$ and the spectral radius $λ(G)>\frac{k-1+\sqrt{4m-k^2+1}}{2}$, then $G$ contains a $F_{2k+1}$ and $F_{2k+2}$, unless $G=K_{k}\vee (\frac{m}{k}-\frac{k-1}{2})K_1$. The case $k\geq 3$ of the above conjecture has been confirmed by Li, Zhao and Zou [J. Graph theory 110 (2025)]. Zhang and Wang [Discrete Math. 347 (2024)], Yu, Li and Peng [Discrete Math. 348 (2025)], Gao and Li [Discrete Math. 349 (2026)] confirmed the case $k=2$. However, the extremal graphs for the case $k=2$ only exist when $m$ is odd. The case with $m$ even has not been determined. In this paper, we characterize the extremal graph for $F_6$ and even $m\ge 3000$.
On the Turán number of odd-ballooning of $3$-chromatic graphs
Given a graph $F$, the Turán number ${\rm ex}(n,F)$ is the maximum number of edges in any $n$-vertex $F$-free graph. The odd-ballooning of $F$, denoted by $F^{o}$, is a graph obtained by replacing each edge of $F$ with an odd cycle, where all new vertices of the odd cycles are distinct. The Turán number of the odd-ballooning of $F$ has been established for several important cases. For a star, it was determined by Erdős, Füredi, Gould, and Gunderson (1995), Hou, Qiu, and Liu (2018), and Yuan (2018); for trees under certain conditions, by Zhu and Chen (2023); and for complete bipartite graphs $K_{s,t}$ ($t\geq s \geq 2$) where each substituted odd cycle has length at least five, by Peng and Xia (2024). In this paper, we apply Simonovits' celebrated method of progressive induction to determine the Turán number for the odd-ballooning of a class of $3$-chromatic graphs. Specifically, let $F$ be a graph formed by connecting a single vertex to all vertices of another graph whose components are either non-trivial trees or even cycles. We determine ${\rm ex}(n,F^{o})$ when each substituted odd cycle in $F^{o}$ has length at least five. As corollaries, we obtain the Turán number for the odd-ballooning of several well-known graph classes, including odd wheels, fan graphs, book graphs, and friendship graphs, where each substituted odd cycle in the ballooning has length at least five.
Anti-Ramsey number of intersecting cliques
An edge-colored graph is called a rainbow graph if all its edges have distinct colors. The anti-Ramsey number $ar(n, G)$, for a graph $G$ and a positive integer $n$, is defined as the minimum number of colors $r$ such that every exact $r$-edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$ contains at least one rainbow copy of $G$. A $(k, r)$-fan graph, denoted $F_{k, r}$, is a graph composed of $k$ cliques each of size $r$, all intersecting at exactly one common vertex. In this paper, we determine $ar(n, F_{k, r})$ for $n \geq 256r^{16}(k+1)^5$, $k \geq 1$, and $r \geq 2$.
Independence numbers of the 2-token graphs of some join graphs
The $2$-token graph $F_2(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the graph whose set of vertices consists of all the $2$-subsets of $V(G)$, where two vertices are adjacent if and only if their symmetric difference is an edge in $G$. Let $G$ be the join graph of $E_n$ and $H$, where $H$ is any graph. In this paper, we give a method to construct an independent set ${\mathcal I}'$ of $F_2(G)$ from an independent set ${\mathcal I}$ of $F_2(G)$ such that $|{\mathcal I}'| \geq |{\mathcal I}|$. As an application, we obtain the independence number of the $2$-token graphs of fan graphs $F_{n, m}$, wheel graphs $W_{n, m}$ and $E_n+K_n$.
Arithmetical Structures On Fan Graphs
In this paper, we study the arithmetical structures on Fan Graphs Fn. Let G be a finite and connected graph. An arithmetical structure on G is a pair (d, r) of positive integer vectors such that r is primitive (the greatest common divisor of its coefficients is 1) and (diag(d)-A)r = 0, where A represents the adjacency matrix of G. This work explores the combinatorial properties of the arithmetical structures associated with Fn. Further, we discuss the arrow-star graph, a structure derived from the fan graph, along with its properties. Additionally, we investigate the critical group linked to each such structure on Fn.
On Laplacian and Distance Laplacian Spectra of Generalized Fan Graph & a New Graph Class
Given a graph $G$, the Laplacian matrix of $G$, $L(G)$ is the difference of the adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and $\text{Deg}(G)$, where $\text{Deg}(G)$ is the diagonal matrix of vertex degrees.
The distance Laplacian matrix $D^L({G})$ is the difference of the transmission matrix of $G$ and the distance matrix of $G$.
In the given paper, we first obtain the Laplacian and distance Laplacian spectrum of generalized fan graphs.
We then introduce a new graph class which is denoted by $\mathcal{NC}(F_{m,n})$. Finally, we determine the Laplacian spectrum and the distance Laplacian spectrum of $\mathcal{NC}(F_{m,n})$.
Spectral radius of graphs of given size with forbidden a fan graph $F_6$
Let $F_k=K_1\vee P_{k-1}$ be the fan graph on $k$ vertices. A graph is said to be $F_k$-free if it does not contain $F_k$ as a subgraph. Yu et al. in [arXiv:2404.03423] conjectured that for $k\geq2$ and $m$ sufficiently large, if $G$ is an $F_{2k+1}$-free or $F_{2k+2}$-free graph, then $λ(G)\leq \frac{k-1+\sqrt{4m-k^2+1}}{2}$ and the equality holds if and only if $G\cong K_k\vee\left(\frac{m}{k}-\frac{k-1}{2}\right)K_1$. Recently, Li et al. in [arXiv:2409.15918] showed that the above conjecture holds for $k\geq 3$. The only left case is for $k=2$, which corresponds to $F_5$ or $F_6$. Since the case of $F_5$ was solved by Yu et al. in [arXiv:2404.03423] and Zhang and Wang in [On the spectral radius of graphs without a gem, Discrete Math. 347 (2024) 114171]. So, one needs only to deal with the case of $F_6$. In this paper, we solve the only left case by determining the maximum spectral radius of $F_6$-free graphs with size $m\geq 88$, and the corresponding extremal graph.
Partial Chebyshev Polynomials and Fan Graphs
Motivated by the product formula of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind $U_n(x)$, we newly introduce the partial Chebyshev polynomials $U^{\mathrm{e}}_n(x)$ and $U^{\mathrm{o}}_n(x)$ and derive their basic properties, relations to the classical Chebyshev polynomials, and new factorization formulas for $U_n(x)$. In order to calculate the quadratic embedding constant (QEC) of a fan graph $K_1+P_n$, we derive a new polynomial $φ_n(x)$ which is factorized by partial Chebyshev polynomial $U^{\mathrm{e}}_n(x)$. We prove that $\mathrm{QEC}(K_1+P_n)$ is given in terms of the minimal zero of $φ_n(x)$, and obtain the explicit value of $\mathrm{QEC}(K_1+P_n)$ for an even $n$ and its reasonable exstimate for an odd $n$.
Edge-graceful usual fan graphs
A graph $G$ with $p$ vertices and $q$ edges is said to be edge-graceful if its edges can be labeled from $1$ through $q$, in such a way that the labels induced on the vertices by adding over the labels of incident edges modulo $p$ are distinct. A known result under this topic is Lo's Theorem, which states that if a graph $G$ with $p$ vertices and $q$ edges is edge-graceful, then $p\Big|\Big(q^{2}+q-\dfrac{p(p-1)}{2}\Big)$.
This paper presents novel results on the edge-gracefulness of the usual fan graphs. Using Lo's Theorem, the concepts of divisibility and Diophantine equations, and a computer program created, we determine all edge-graceful usual fan graphs $F_{1,n}$ with their corresponding edge-graceful labels.
Extension on spectral extrema of gem-free graph with given size
A graph $G$ is $F$-free if $G$ does not contain $F$ as a subgraph. Let $\mathcal{G}(m, F)$ denote the family of $F$-free graphs with $m$ edges and without isolated vertices. Let $S_{n,k}$ denote the graph obtained by joining every vertex of $K_{k}$ to $n-k$ isolated vertices and $S_{n,k}^{t}$ denote the graph obtained from $S_{n-t,k}$ by attaching $t$ pendant vertices to the maximal degree vertex of $S_{n-t,k}$, respectively. Denote by $H_{n}$ the fan graph obtain from $n-1$-vertex path plus a vertex adjacent to each vertex of the path. Particularly, the graph $H_{5}$ is also known as the gem. Zhang and Wang [Discrete Math. 347(2024)114171] and Yu, Li and Peng [arXiv: 2404. 03423] showed that every gem-free graph $G$ with $m$ edges satisfies $ρ(G)\leq ρ(S_{\frac{m+3}{2},2})$. In this paper, we show that if $G\in \mathcal{G}(m, H_{5})\setminus S_{\frac{m+3}{2},2}$ be a graph of odd size $m\geq23$, then $ρ(G)\leq ρ(S_{\frac{m+5}{2},2}^{2})$, and equality holds if and only if $G\cong S_{\frac{m+5}{2},2}^{2}$.
Spectral extrema of graphs with fixed size: forbidden a fan graph, friendship graph or theta graph

It is well-known that the Brualdi-Hoffman-Turán-type problem inquiries about the maximum spectral radius \( λ(G) \) of an \( F \)-free graph \( G \) with \( m \) edges. Let \( θ_{1,p,q} \) denote the theta graph, which is constructed by connecting two vertices with 3 internally disjoint paths of lengths 1, \( p \), and \( q \) respectively. Let \( F_k \) be the fan graph, that is, the join of a \( K_1 \) and a path \( P_{k - 1} \). Let \( F_{k,3} \) be the friendship graph, obtained by having \( k \) triangles share a common vertex. In this paper, we utilize the \( k \)-core method and spectral techniques to address some spectral extrema of graphs with a fixed number of edges. Firstly, we demonstrate that for \( m \geqslant \frac{9}{4}k^6 + 6k^5 + 46k^4 + 56k^3 + 196k^2 \) and \( k \geqslant 3 \), if \( G \) is \( F_{2k + 2} \)-free, then \( λ(G) \leqslant \frac{k - 1 + \sqrt{4m - k^2 + 1}}{2} \). Equality holds if and only if \( G \cong K_k \vee (\frac{m}{k}-\frac{k - 1}{2})K_1 \). This validates a conjecture by Yu, Li, and Peng [Discrete Math. 348 (2025) 114391] and refines a recent result by Li, Zhai, and Shu [European J. Combin. 120 (2024) 103966]. Secondly, we show that for \( m \geqslant \frac{9}{4}k^6 + 6k^5 + 46k^4 + 56k^3 + 196k^2 \) with \( k \geqslant 3 \), if \( G \) is \( F_{k,3} \)-free and has \( m \) edges, then \( λ(G) \leqslant \frac{k - 1 + \sqrt{4m - k^2 + 1}}{2} \). Equality holds precisely when \( G \cong K_k \vee (\frac{m}{k}-\frac{k - 1}{2})K_1 \). This confirms a conjecture put forward by Li, Lu, and Peng [Discrete Math. 346(2023)113680]. Finally, we identify the \( θ_{1,p,q} \)-free graph with \( m \) edges that possesses the largest spectral radius, where \( q \geqslant p \geqslant 3 \) and \( p + q \geqslant 2k + 1 \). A further research problem is also proposed.
The number of quasi-trees of bouquets with exactly one non-orientable loop
Recently, Merino extended the classical relation between the $2n$-th Fibonacci number and the number of spanning trees of the $n$-fan graph to ribbon graphs, and established a relation between the $n$-associated Mersenne number and the number of quasi-trees of the $n$-wheel ribbon graph. Moreover, Merino posed a problem of finding the Lucas numbers as the number of spanning quasi-trees of a family of ribbon graphs. In this paper, we solve the problem and give the Matrix-Quasi-tree Theorem for a bouquet with exactly one non-orientable loop. Furthermore, this theorem is used to verify that the number of quasi-trees of some classes of bouquets is closely related to the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. We also give alternative proofs of the number of quasi-trees of these bouquets by using the deletion-contraction relations of ribbon graphs.
Spectral extremal graphs for fan graphs
A well-known result of Nosal states that a graph $G$ with $m$ edges and $λ(G) > \sqrt{m}$ contains a triangle. Nikiforov [Combin. Probab. Comput. 11 (2002)] extended this result to cliques by showing that if $λ(G) > \sqrt{2m(1-1/r)}$, then $G$ contains a copy of $K_{r+1}$. Let $C_k^+$ be the graph obtained from a cycle $C_k$ by adding an edge to two vertices with distance two, and let $F_k$ be the friendship graph consisting of $k$ triangles that share a common vertex. Recently, Zhai, Lin and Shu [European J. Combin. 95 (2021)], Sun, Li and Wei [Discrete Math. 346 (2023)], and Li, Lu and Peng [Discrete Math. 346 (2023)] proved that if $ m\ge 8$ and $λ(G) \ge \frac{1}{2} (1+\sqrt{4m-3})$, then $G$ contains a copy of $C_5,C_5^+$ and $F_2$, respectively, unless $G=K_2\vee \frac{m-1}{2}K_1$. In this paper, we give a unified extension by showing that such a graph contains a copy of $V_5$, where $V_5=K_1\vee P_4$ is the join of a vertex and a path on four vertices. Our result extends the aforementioned results since $C_5,C_5^+$ and $F_2$ are proper subgraphs of $V_5$. In addition, we prove that if $m\ge 33$ and $λ(G) \ge 1+ \sqrt{m-2}$, then $G$ contains a copy of $F_3$, unless $G=K_3\vee \frac{m-3}{3}K_1$. This confirms a conjecture on the friendship graph $F_k$ in the case $k=3$. Finally, we conclude some spectral extremal graph problems concerning the large fan graphs and wheel graphs.

We derive a general formula for the quadratic embedding constant of a graph join $\bar{K}_m+G$, where $\bar{K}_m$ is the empty graph on $m\ge1$ vertices and $G$ is an arbitrary graph. Applying our formula to a fan graph $K_1+P_n$, where $K_1=\bar{K}_1$ is the singleton graph and $P_n$ is the path on $n\ge1$ vertices, we show that $\mathrm{QEC}(K_1+P_n)=-\tildeα_n-2$, where $\tildeα_n$ is the minimal zero of a new polynomial $Φ_n(x)$ related to Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. Moreover, for an even $n$ we have $\tildeα_n=\min\mathrm{ev}(A_n)$, where the right-hand side is the An minimal eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix $A_n$ of $P_n$. For an odd $n$ we show that $\min\mathrm{ev}(A_{n+1})\le\tildeα_n<\min\mathrm{ev}(A_n)$.
