Strong spectral stabilities for $C_{2k+1}$-free graphs
A stability result due to Ren, Wang, Wang and Yang [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 38 (2024)] shows that if $3\le r \le 2k$ and $n\ge 318 (r-2)^2k$, and $G$ is a $C_{2k+1}$-free graph on $n$ vertices with $e(G)\ge \lfloor {(n-r+1)^2}/{4}\rfloor +{r \choose 2}$, then $G$ can be made bipartite by deleting at most $r-2$ vertices. Using a different method, we give a linear bound on $n$ in terms of $k$ and show a stronger structural result, which roughly says that $G$ can be obtained from a large bipartite graph by suspending some small graphs that the total number of vertices is at most $r-2$. This improves a result of Yan and Peng (2024) by weakening the requirement on $n$ and $k$. As a direct corollary, we obtain a tight upper bound on the size of an $n$-vertex $C_{2k+1}$-free graph with chromatic number $χ(G)\ge r$ for every $r\le 2k$. The second part of this paper concerns the spectral extremal problem for $C_{2k+1}$-free graphs. We denote by $λ(G)$ the spectral radius of the adjacency matrix of a graph $G$. Let $T_{n-r+1,2}\circ K_r$ be the graph obtained by identifying a vertex of the complete graph $K_r$ and a vertex of the smaller partite set of the bipartite Turán graph $T_{n-r+1 ,2}$. Using the spectral techniques, we prove that if $3\le r\le 2k$ and $n\ge 712k$, and $G$ is an $n$-vertex $C_{2k+1}$-free graph with chromatic number $χ(G) \ge r$, then $λ(G)\le λ(T_{n-r+1,2}\circ K_r)$, where the equality holds if and only if $G=T_{n-r+1,2}\circ K_r$. Our result not only extends a result of Guo, Lin and Zhao [Linear Algebra Appl. 627 (2021)] as well as a result of Zhang and Zhao [Discrete Math. 346 (2023)], but also provides the first solution to the spectral extremal problem for $F$-free graphs with high chromatic number.

A well-known result of Mantel asserts that every $n$-vertex triangle-free graph $G$ has at most $\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor$ edges. Moreover, Erdős proved that if $G$ is further non-bipartite, then $e(G)\le \lfloor {(n-1)^2}/{4}\rfloor +1$. Recently, Lin, Ning and Wu [Combin. Probab. Comput. 30 (2021)] established a spectral version by showing that if $G$ is a triangle-free non-bipartite graph on $n$ vertices, then $λ(G)\le λ(S_1(T_{n-1,2}))$, with equality if and only if $G=S_1(T_{n-1,2})$, where $S_1(T_{n-1,2})$ is obtained from $T_{n-1,2}$ by subdividing an edge. In this paper, we investigate the maximum spectral radius of a non-bipartite graph without some short odd cycles. Let $C_{2\ell +1}(T_{n-2\ell, 2})$ be the graph obtained by identifying a vertex of $C_{2\ell+1}$ and a vertex of the smaller partite set of $T_{n-2\ell ,2}$. We prove that for $1\le \ell < k$ and $n\ge 187k$, if $G$ is an $n$-vertex $\{C_3,\ldots ,C_{2\ell -1},C_{2k+1}\}$-free non-bipartite graph, then $λ(G)\le λ(C_{2\ell +1}(T_{n-2\ell, 2}))$, with equality if and only if $G=C_{2\ell +1}(T_{n-2\ell, 2})$. This result could be viewed as a spectral analogue of a min-degree result due to Yuan and Peng [European J. Combin. 127 (2025)]. Moreover, our result extends a result of Guo, Lin and Zhao [Linear Algebra Appl. 627 (2021)] as well as a recent result of Zhang and Zhao [Discrete Math. 346 (2023)] since we can get rid of the condition that $n$ is sufficiently large. The argument in our proof is quite different and makes use of the classical spectral stability method and the double-eigenvector technique. The main innovation lies in a more clever argument that guarantees a subgraph to be bipartite after removing few vertices, which may be of independent interest.

It is well-known that the Brualdi-Hoffman-Turán-type problem inquiries about the maximum spectral radius \( λ(G) \) of an \( F \)-free graph \( G \) with \( m \) edges. Let \( θ_{1,p,q} \) denote the theta graph, which is constructed by connecting two vertices with 3 internally disjoint paths of lengths 1, \( p \), and \( q \) respectively. Let \( F_k \) be the fan graph, that is, the join of a \( K_1 \) and a path \( P_{k - 1} \). Let \( F_{k,3} \) be the friendship graph, obtained by having \( k \) triangles share a common vertex. In this paper, we utilize the \( k \)-core method and spectral techniques to address some spectral extrema of graphs with a fixed number of edges. Firstly, we demonstrate that for \( m \geqslant \frac{9}{4}k^6 + 6k^5 + 46k^4 + 56k^3 + 196k^2 \) and \( k \geqslant 3 \), if \( G \) is \( F_{2k + 2} \)-free, then \( λ(G) \leqslant \frac{k - 1 + \sqrt{4m - k^2 + 1}}{2} \). Equality holds if and only if \( G \cong K_k \vee (\frac{m}{k}-\frac{k - 1}{2})K_1 \). This validates a conjecture by Yu, Li, and Peng [Discrete Math. 348 (2025) 114391] and refines a recent result by Li, Zhai, and Shu [European J. Combin. 120 (2024) 103966]. Secondly, we show that for \( m \geqslant \frac{9}{4}k^6 + 6k^5 + 46k^4 + 56k^3 + 196k^2 \) with \( k \geqslant 3 \), if \( G \) is \( F_{k,3} \)-free and has \( m \) edges, then \( λ(G) \leqslant \frac{k - 1 + \sqrt{4m - k^2 + 1}}{2} \). Equality holds precisely when \( G \cong K_k \vee (\frac{m}{k}-\frac{k - 1}{2})K_1 \). This confirms a conjecture put forward by Li, Lu, and Peng [Discrete Math. 346(2023)113680]. Finally, we identify the \( θ_{1,p,q} \)-free graph with \( m \) edges that possesses the largest spectral radius, where \( q \geqslant p \geqslant 3 \) and \( p + q \geqslant 2k + 1 \). A further research problem is also proposed.
