Total positivity from a kind of lattice paths
Total positivity of matrices is deeply studied and plays an important role in various branches of mathematics. The main purpose of this paper is to study total positivity of a matrix $M=[M_{n,k}]_{n,k}$ generated by the weighted lattice paths in $\mathbb{N}^2$ from the origin $(0,0)$ to the point $(k,n)$ consisting of types of steps: $(0,1)$ and $(1,t+i)$ for $0\leq i\leq \ell$, where each step $(0,1)$ from height~$n-1$ gets the weight~$b_n(\textbf{y})$ and each step $(1,t+i)$ from height~$n-t-i$ gets the weight $a_n^{(i)}(\textbf{x})$.
Using an algebraic method, we prove that the $\textbf{x}$-total positivity of the weight matrix $[a_i^{(i-j)}(\textbf{x})]_{i,j}$ implies that of $M$. Furthermore, using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma, we obtain that both $M$ and the Toeplitz matrix of each row sequence of $M$ with $t\geq1$ are $\textbf{x}$-totally positive under the following three cases respectively: (1) $\ell=1$, (2) $\ell=2$ and restrictions for $a_n^{(i)}$, (3) general $\ell$ and both $a^{(i)}_n$ and $b_n$ are independent of $n$. In addition, for the case (3), we show that the matrix $M$ is a Riordan array, present its explicit formula and prove total positivity of the Toeplitz matrix of the each column of $M$. In particular, from the results for Toeplitz-total positivity, we also obtain the Pólya frequency and log-concavity of the corresponding sequence.
Finally, as applications, we in a unified manner establish total positivity and the Toeplitz-total positivity for many well-known combinatorial triangles, including the Pascal triangle, the Pascal square, the Delannoy triangle, the Delannoy square, the signless Stirling triangle of the first kind, the Legendre-Stirling triangle of the first kind, the Jacobi-Stirling triangle of the first kind, the Brenti's recursive matrix, and so on.

Total positivity of matrices is deeply studied and plays an important role in various branches of mathematics. The aim of this paper is to study the criteria for coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity of the row-generating polynomials of generalized $m$-Jacobi-Rogers triangles and their applications.
Using the theory of production matrices, we present the criteria for coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity of the row-generating polynomials of the output matrices of certain production matrices. In particular, we gain a criterion for coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity of the row-generating polynomial sequence of the generalized $m$-Jacobi-Rogers triangle. This immediately implies that the corresponding generalized $m$-Jacobi-Rogers triangular convolution preserves the Stieltjes moment property of sequences and its zeroth column sequence is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive and log-convex of higher order in all the indeterminates. In consequence, for $m=1$, we immediately obtain some results on Hankel-total positivity for the Catalan-Stieltjes matrices. In particular, we in a unified manner apply our results to some combinatorial triangles or polynomials including the generalized Jacobi Stirling triangle, a generalized elliptic polynomial, a refined Stirling cycle polynomial and a refined Eulerian polynomial. For the general $m$, combining our criterion and a function satisfying an autonomous differential equation, we present different criteria for coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity of the row-generating polynomial sequence of exponential Rirodan arrays. In addition, we also derive some results for coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity in terms of compositional functions and $m$-branched Stieltjes-type continued fractions. We apply our results to many combinatorial polynomials and solve some conjcetures proposed by Sokal.
Stability of combinatorial polynomials and its applications
The aim of this paper is to make a systematical study on the stability of polynomials in combinatorics.
Applying the characterizations of Borcea and Brändén concerning linear operators preserving stability, we present criteria for real stability and Hurwitz stability. We also give a criterion for Hurwitz stability of the Turán expressions. As applications, we derive some stability results occurred in the literature in a unified manner. In addition, we obtain the Hurwitz stability of Turán expressions for alternating runs polynomials of types $A$ and $B$ and solve a conjecture concerning Hurwitz stability of alternating runs polynomials defined on a dual set of Stirling permutations.
Furthermore, we prove that the Hurwitz stability of any symmetric polynomial implies its semi-$γ$-positivity. We study a class of symmetric polynomials and derive many nice properties including Hurwitz stability, semi-$γ$-positivity, non $γ$-positivity, unimodality, strong $q$-log-convexity, the Jacobi continued fraction expansion and the relation with derivative polynomials. In particular, these properties of the alternating descents polynomials of types $A$ and $B$ can be obtained in a unified approach.
Finally, we use real stability to prove a criterion for zeros interlacing between a polynomial and its reciprocal polynomial, which implies the alternatingly increasing property. This criterion extends a result of Brändén and Solus and unifies such properties for many combinatorial polynomials, including ascent polynomials for $k$-ary words, descent polynomials on signed Stirling permutations and $q$-analog of descent polynomials on colored permutations, and so on. We prove the alternatingly increasing property and zeros interlacing for two kinds of peak polynomials on the dual set of Stirling permutations.

Based on the Stirling triangle of the second kind, the Whitney triangle of the second kind and one triangle of Riordan, we study a Stirling-Whitney-Riordan triangle $[T_{n,k}]_{n,k}$ satisfying the recurrence relation: \begin{eqnarray*} T_{n,k}&=&(b_1k+b_2)T_{n-1,k-1}+[(2λb_1+a_1)k+a_2+λ( b_1+b_2)] T_{n-1,k}+\\ &&λ(a_1+λb_1)(k+1)T_{n-1,k+1}, \end{eqnarray*} where initial conditions $T_{n,k}=0$ unless $0\le k\le n$ and $T_{0,0}=1$.
We prove that the Stirling-Whitney-Riordan triangle $[T_{n,k}]_{n,k}$ is $\textbf{x}$-totally positive with $\textbf{x}=(a_1,a_2,b_1,b_2,λ)$. We show that the row-generating function $T_n(q)$ has only real zeros and the Turán-type polynomial $T_{n+1}(q)T_{n-1}(q)-T^2_n(q)$ is stable. We also present explicit formulae for $T_{n,k}$ and the exponential generating function of $T_n(q)$ and give a Jacobi continued fraction expansion for the ordinary generating function of $T_n(q)$. Furthermore, we get the $\textbf{x}$-Stieltjes moment property and $3$-$\textbf{x}$-log-convexity of $T_n(q)$ and show that the triangular convolution $z_n=\sum_{i=0}^nT_{n,i}x_iy_{n-i}$ preserves Stieltjes moment property of sequences. Finally, for the first column $(T_{n,0})_{n\geq0}$, we derive some properties similar to those of $(T_n(q))_{n\geq0}.$

Many combinatorial numbers can be placed in the following generalized triangular array $[T_{n,k}]_{n,k\ge 0}$ satisfying the recurrence relation: \begin{equation*} T_{n,k}=λ(a_0n+a_1k+a_2)T_{n-1,k}+(b_0n+b_1k+b_2)T_{n-1,k-1}+\frac{d(da_1-b_1)}λ(n-k+1)T_{n-1,k-2} \end{equation*} with $T_{0,0}=1$ and $T_{n,k}=0$ unless $0\le k\le n$ for suitable $a_0,a_1,a_2,b_0,b_1,b_2,d$ and $λ$. For $n\geq0$, denote by $T_n(q)$ the generating function of the $n$-th row. In this paper, we develop various criteria for $\textbf{x}$-Stieltjes moment property and $3$-$\textbf{x}$-log-convexity of $T_n(q)$ based on the Jacobi continued fraction expression of $\sum_{n\geq0}T_n(q)t^n$, where $\textbf{x}$ is a set of indeterminates consisting of $q$ and those parameters occurring in the recurrence relation. With the help of a criterion of Wang and Zhu [Adv. in Appl. Math. (2016)], we show that the corresponding linear transformation of $T_{n,k}$ preserves Stieltjes moment properties of sequences. Finally, we present some related examples including factorial numbers, Whitney numbers, Stirling permutations, minimax trees and peak statistics.
A unified approach to combinatorial triangles: a generalized Eulerian polynomial
Motivated by the classical Eulerian number, descent and excedance numbers in the hyperoctahedral groups, an triangular array from staircase tableaux and so on, we study a triangular array $[\mathcal {T}_{n,k}]_{n,k\ge 0}$ satisfying the recurrence relation: \begin{equation*} \mathcal {T}_{n,k}=λ(a_0n+a_1k+a_2)\mathcal {T}_{n-1,k}+(b_0n+b_1k+b_2)\mathcal {T}_{n-1,k-1}+\frac{cd}λ(n-k+1)\mathcal {T}_{n-1,k-2} \end{equation*} with $\mathcal {T}_{0,0}=1$ and $\mathcal {T}_{n,k}=0$ unless $0\le k\le n$. We derive a functional transformation for its row-generating function $\mathcal{T}_n(x)$ from the row-generating function $A_n(x)$ of another array $[A_{n,k}]_{n,k}$ satisfying a two-term recurrence relation. Based on this transformation, we can get properties of $\mathcal {T}_{n,k}$ and $\mathcal{T}_n(x)$ including nonnegativity, log-concavity, real rootedness, explicit formula and so on. Then we extend the famous Frobenius formula, the $γ$ positivity decomposition and the David-Barton formula for the classical Eulerian polynomial to those of a generalized Eulerian polynomial. We also get an identity for the generalized Eulerian polynomial with the general derivative polynomial.
Finally, we apply our results to an array from the Lambert function, a triangular array from staircase tableaux and the alternating-runs triangle of type $B$ in a unified approach.

Log-concavity and almost log-convexity of the cycle index polynomials were proved by Bender and Canfield [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 74 (1996)]. Schirmacher [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 85 (1999)] extended them to $q$-log-concavity and almost $q$-log-convexity. Motivated by these, we consider the stronger properties total positivity from the Toeplitz matrix and Hankel matrix.
By using exponential Riordan array methods, we give some criteria for total positivity of the triangular matrix of coefficients of the generalized cycle index polynomials, the Toeplitz matrix and Hankel matrix of the polynomial sequence in terms of the exponential formula, the logarithmic formula and the fractional formula, respectively.
Finally, we apply our criteria to some triangular arrays satisfying some recurrence relations, including Bessel triangles of two kinds and their generalizations, the Lah triangle and its generalization, the idempotent triangle and some triangles related to binomial coefficients, rook polynomials and Laguerre polynomials. We not only get total positivity of these lower-triangles, and $q$-Stieltjes moment properties and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of their row-generating functions, but also prove that their triangular convolutions preserve Stieltjes moment property. In particular, we solve a conjecture of Sokal on $q$-Stieltjes moment property of rook polynomials.
Lattice paths and branched continued fractions: An infinite sequence of generalizations of the Stieltjes--Rogers and Thron--Rogers polynomials, with coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity
We define an infinite sequence of generalizations, parametrized by an integer $m \ge 1$, of the Stieltjes--Rogers and Thron--Rogers polynomials; they arise as the power-series expansions of some branched continued fractions, and as the generating polynomials for $m$-Dyck and $m$-Schröder paths with height-dependent weights. We prove that all of these sequences of polynomials are coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive, jointly in all the (infinitely many) indeterminates. We then apply this theory to prove the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity for combinatorially interesting sequences of polynomials. Enumeration of unlabeled ordered trees and forests gives rise to multivariate Fuss--Narayana polynomials and Fuss--Narayana symmetric functions. Enumeration of increasing (labeled) ordered trees and forests gives rise to multivariate Eulerian polynomials and Eulerian symmetric functions, which include the univariate $m$th-order Eulerian polynomials as specializations. We also find branched continued fractions for ratios of contiguous hypergeometric series ${}_r \! F_s$ for arbitrary $r$ and $s$, which generalize Gauss' continued fraction for ratios of contiguous ${}_2 \! F_1$; and for $s=0$ we prove the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity. Finally, we extend the branched continued fractions to ratios of contiguous basic hypergeometric series ${}_r \! φ_s$.

In this paper, we present some criteria for the $2$-$q$-log-convexity and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of combinatorial sequences, which can be regarded as the first column of certain infinite triangular array $[A_{n,k}(q)]_{n,k\geq0}$ of polynomials in $q$ with nonnegative coefficients satisfying the recurrence relation $$A_{n,k}(q)=A_{n-1,k-1}(q)+g_k(q)A_{n-1,k}(q)+h_{k+1}(q)A_{n-1,k+1}(q).$$ Those criterions can also be presented by continued fractions and generating functions. These allow a unified treatment of the $2$-$q$-log-convexity of alternating Eulerian polynomials, $2$-log-convexity of Euler numbers, and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of many classical polynomials, including the Bell polynomials, the Eulerian polynomials of Types $A$ and $B$, the $q$-Schröder numbers, $q$-central Delannoy numbers, the Narayana polynomials of Types $A$ and $B$, the generating functions of rows in the Catalan triangles of Aigner and Shapiro, the generating functions of rows in the large Schröder triangle, and so on, which extend many known results for $q$-log-convexity.

We show that Stieltjes moment sequences are infinitely log-convex, which parallels a famous result that (finite) Pólya frequency sequences are infinitely log-concave. We introduce the concept of $q$-Stieltjes moment sequences of polynomials and show that many well-known polynomials in combinatorics are such sequences. We provide a criterion for linear transformations and convolutions preserving Stieltjes moment sequences. Many well-known combinatorial sequences are shown to be Stieltjes moment sequences in a unified approach and therefore infinitely log-convex, which in particular settles a conjecture of Chen and Xia about the infinite log-convexity of the Schröder numbers. We also list some interesting problems and conjectures about the log-convexity and the Stieltjes moment property of the (generalized) Apéry numbers.

In this paper we confirm several conjectures of Z.-W. Sun on Hankel-type determinants for some combinatorial sequences including Franel numbers, Domb numbers and Apéry numbers. For any nonnegative integer $n$, define \begin{gather*}f_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^3,\ D_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2\binom{2k}k\binom{2(n-k)}{n-k}, b_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2\binom{n+k}k,\ A_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2\binom{n+k}k^2. \end{gather*} For $n=0,1,2,\ldots$, we show that $6^{-n}|f_{i+j}|_{0\leq i,j\leq n}$ and $12^{-n}|D_{i+j}|_{0\le i,j\le n}$ are positive odd integers, and $10^{-n}|b_{i+j}|_{0\leq i,j\leq n}$ and $24^{-n}|A_{i+j}|_{0\leq i,j\leq n}$ are always integers.

In this paper, we mainly study the stability of iterated polynomials and linear transformations preserving the strong $q$-log-convexity of polynomials
Let $[T_{n,k}]_{n,k\geq0}$ be an array of nonnegative numbers. We give some criteria for the linear transformation $$y_n(q)=\sum_{k=0}^nT_{n,k}x_k(q)$$ preserving the strong $q$-log-convexity (resp. log-convexity). As applications, we derive that some linear transformations (for instance, the Stirling transformations of two kinds, the Jacobi-Stirling transformations of two kinds, the Legendre-Stirling transformations of two kinds, the central factorial transformations, and so on) preserve the strong $q$-log-convexity (resp. log-convexity) in a unified manner. In particular, we confirm a conjecture of Lin and Zeng, and extend some results of Chen {\it et al.}, and Zhu for strong $q$-log-convexity of polynomials, and some results of Liu and Wang for transformations preserving the log-convexity.
The stability property of iterated polynomials implies the $q$-log-convexity. By applying the method of interlacing of zeros, we also present two criteria for the stability of the iterated Sturm sequences and $q$-log-convexity of polynomials. As consequences, we get the stabilities of iterated Eulerian polynomials of type $A$ and $B$, and their $q$-analogs. In addition, we also prove that the generating functions of alternating runs of type $A$ and $B$, the longest alternating subsequence and up-down runs of permutations form a $q$-log-convex sequence, respectively.
Linear transformations and strong $q$-log-concavity for certain combinatorial triangle
It is well-known that the binomial transformation preserves the log-concavity property and log-convexity property. Let $\binom{a+n}{b+k}$ be the binomial coefficients and $\binom{n,k}{j}$ be defined by $(b_0+b_1x+\cdots+b_kx^{k})^n:=\sum_{j=0}^{kn}\binom{n,k}{j}x^j,$ where the sequence $(b_i)_{0\leq i\leq k}$ is log-concave. In this paper, we prove that the linear transformation $$y_n(q)=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{a+n}{b+k}x_k(q)$$ preserves the strong $q$-log-concavity property for any fixed nonnegative integers $a$ and $b$, which strengthens and gives a simple proof of results of Ehrenborg and Steingrimsson, and Wang, respectively, on linear transformations preserving the log-concavity property. We also show that the linear transformation $$y_n=\sum_{i=0}^{kn}\binom{n,k}{j}x_i$$ not only preserves the log-concavity property, but also preserves the log-convexity property, which extends the results of Ahmia and Belbachir about the $s$-triangle transformation preserving the log-convexity property and log-concavity property. Let $[A_{n,k}(q)]_{n, k\geq0}$ be an infinite lower triangular array of polynomials in $q$ with nonnegative coefficients satisfying the recurrence \begin{eqnarray*}\label{re} A_{n,k}(q)=f_{n,k}(q)\,A_{n-1,k-1}(q)+g_{n,k}(q)\,A_{n-1,k}(q)+h_{n,k}(q)\,A_{n-1,k+1}(q), \end{eqnarray*} for $n\geq 1$ and $k\geq 0$, where $A_{0,0}(q)=1$, $A_{0,k}(q)=A_{0,-1}(q)=0$ for $k>0$. We present criterions for the strong $q$-log-concavity of the sequences in each row of $[A_{n,k}(q)]_{n, k\geq0}$. As applications, we get the strong $q$-log-concavity or the log-concavity of the sequences in each row of many well-known triangular arrays, such as the Bell polynomials triangle, the Eulerian polynomials triangle and the Narayana polynomials triangle in a unified approach.

Let $I(G;x)$ denote the independence polynomial of a graph $G$. In this paper we study the unimodality properties of $I(G;x)$ for some composite graphs $G$.
Given two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, let $G_1[G_2]$ denote the lexicographic product of $G_1$ and $G_2$. Assume $I(G_1;x)=\sum_{i\geq0}a_ix^i$ and $I(G_2;x)=\sum_{i\geq0}b_ix^i$, where $I(G_2;x)$ is log-concave. Then we prove (i) if $I(G_1;x)$ is log-concave and $(a^2_i-a_{i-1}a_{i+1})b^2_1\geq a_ia_{i-1}b_2$ for all $1\leq i \leq α(G_1)$, then $I(G_1[G_2];x)$ is log-concave; (ii) if $a_{i-1}\leq b_1a_i$ for $1\leq i\leq α(G_1)$, then $I(G_1[G_2];x)$ is unimodal. In particular, if $a_i$ is increasing in $i$, then $I(G_1[G_2];x)$ is unimodal. We also give two sufficient conditions when the independence polynomial of a complete multipartite graph is unimodal or log-concave. Finally, for every odd positive integer $α> 3$, we find a connected graph $G$ not a tree, such that $α(G) =α$, and $I(G; x)$ is symmetric and has only real zeros. This answers a problem of Mandrescu and Mirică.

In this paper we prove the strong $q$-log-convexity of the Eulerian polynomials of Coxeter groups using their exponential generating functions. Our proof is based on the theory of exponential Riordan arraya and a criterion for determining the strong $q$-log-convexity of polynomials sequences, whose generating functions can be given by the continued fraction. As consequences, we get the strong $q$-log-convexity the Eulerian polynomials of type $A_n,B_n$, their $q$-analogous and the generalized Eulerian polynomials associated to the arithmetic progression $\{a,a+d,a+2d,a+3d,\ldots\}$ in a unified manner.
Operations of graphs and unimodality of independence polynomials
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, assume that $\mathscr{C}=\{C_1,C_2,\ldots, C_q\}$ is a clique cover of $G$ and $U$ is a subset of $V(H)$. We introduce a new graph operation called the clique cover product, denoted by $G^{\mathscr{C}}\star H^U$, as follows: for each clique $C_i\in \mathscr{C}$, add a copy of the graph $H$ and join every vertex of $C_i$ to every vertex of $U$. We prove that the independence polynomial of $G^{\mathscr{C}}\star H^U$ $$I(G^{\mathscr{C}}\star H^U;x)=I^q(H;x)I(G;\frac{xI(H-U;x)}{I(H;x)}),$$ which generalizes some known results on independence polynomials of corona and rooted products of graphs obtained by Gutman and Rosenfeld, respectively. Based on this formula, we show that the clique cover product of some special graphs preserves symmetry, unimodality, log-concavity or reality of zeros of independence polynomials. As applications we derive several known facts in a unified manner and solve some unimodality conjectures and problems.
Higher order log-monotonicity of combinatorial sequences
A sequence $\{z_n\}_{n\geq0}$ is called ratio log-convex in the sense that the ratio sequence $\{\frac{z_{n+1}}{z_n}\}_{n\geq0}$ is log-convex. Based on a three-term recurrence for sequences, we develop techniques for dealing with the ratio log-convexity of ratio sequences. As applications, we prove that the ratio sequences of numbers, including the derangement numbers, the Motzkin numbers, the Fine numbers, Franel numbers and the Domb numbers are ratio log-convex, respectively. Finally, we not only prove that the sequence of derangement numbers is asymptotically infinitely log-monotonic, but also show some infinite log-monotonicity of some numbers related to the Gamma function, in particular, implying two results of Chen {\it et al.} on the infinite log-monotonicity of the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients.

The aim of this paper is to develop analytic techniques to deal with certain monotonicity of combinatorial sequences. (1) A criterion for the monotonicity of the function $\sqrt[x]{f(x)}$ is given, which is a continuous analog for one result of Wang and Zhu. (2) The log-behavior of the functions $θ(x)=\sqrt[x]{2 ζ(x)Γ(x+1)}$ and $F(x)=\sqrt[x]{\frac{Γ(ax+b+1)}{Γ(c x+d+1)Γ(e x+f+1)}}$ is considered, where $ζ(x)$ and $Γ(x)$ are the Riemann zeta function and the Euler Gamma function, respectively. As consequences, the strict log-concavities of the function $θ(x)$ (a conjecture of Chen {\it et al.}) and $\{\sqrt[n]{z_n}\}$ for some combinatorial sequences (including the Bernoulli numbers, the Tangent numbers, the Catalan numbers, the Fuss-Catalan numbers and some Binomial coefficients) are demonstrated. In particular, this contains some results of Chen {\it et al.}, Luca and Stănică. (3). By researching logarithmically complete monotonicity of some functions, the infinite log-monotonicity of the sequence $\{\frac{(n_{0}+ia)!}{(k_0+ib)!(\overline{k_0}+i\overline{b})!}\}_{i\geq0}$ is proved. This generalizes two results of Chen {\it et al.} that both the Catalan numbers $\frac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$ and central binomial coefficients $\binom{2n}{n}$ are infinitely log-monotonic and strengths one result of Su and Wang that $\binom{dn}{δn}$ is log-convex in $n$. (4) The asymptotically infinite log-monotonicity of derangement numbers is showed. (5)The logarithmically complete monotonicity of functions $1/\sqrt[x]{a ζ(x+b)Γ(x+c)}$ and $\sqrt[x]{ρ\prod_{i=1}^n\frac{Γ(x+a_i)}{Γ(x+b_i)}}$ is also obtained, which generalizes the results of Lee and Tepedelenlioǧlu, Qi and Li.
