Pólya enumeration, wreath product symmetric functions, and moduli spaces of curves
We develop a calculus for $S_n$-equivariant Euler characteristics of moduli spaces of stable curves and stable maps. Our approach involves an enrichment of Pólya's cycle index polynomial of a graph to a certain algebra $Λ^{[2]}$ of wreath product symmetric functions. Building on foundational work of Macdonald, we prove that $Λ^{[2]}$ may be viewed as the Grothendieck ring of the category of polynomial functors which map symmetric sequences of vector spaces to vector spaces. This interpretation gives rise to an action of $Λ^{[2]}$ on the ordinary ring of symmetric functions $Λ$, which is described concretely in terms of Adams operations and skewing by power sums. This action lets us deduce appealing formulas, involving only ordinary symmetric functions, for generating functions of $S_n$-equivariant Euler characteristics.
Graph enumeration for moduli spaces of curves and maps
We develop a calculus based on graph enumeration for $S_n$-equivariant motivic invariants of graphically stratified moduli spaces. We apply our theory to the Deligne--Mumford moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g, n}$ and to the space of torus-fixed stable maps $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g, n}(X, β)^{\mathbb{C}^\star}$ when the target $X$ admits an appropriate $\mathbb{C}^\star$-action, deriving new formulas in each case. A key role is played by the Pólya--Petersen character of a graph, which enriches Pólya's classical cycle index polynomial. This character is valued in an algebra $Λ^{[2]}$ of wreath product symmetric functions, which we study from combinatorial and representation-theoretic perspectives. We prove that this algebra may be viewed as the Grothendieck ring of the category of polynomial functors which take symmetric sequences of vector spaces to vector spaces, building on foundational work of Macdonald. This leads to a plethystic action of $Λ^{[2]}$ on the ring $Λ$ of ordinary symmetric functions. Using this action, we derive our formulas, which ultimately involve only ordinary symmetric functions and the Grothendieck ring of mixed Hodge structures.

In combinatorics, Pólya's Enumeration Theorem is a powerful tool for solving a wide range of counting problems, including the enumeration of groups, graphs, and chemical compounds. In this paper, we present an extension of Pólya's Enumeration Theorem. As an application, we derive a formula that expresses the $n$-th elementary symmetric polynomial in $m$ indeterminates (where $n\leq m$) as a variant of the cycle index polynomial of the symmetric group $\mathrm{Sym}(n)$. This result resolves a problem posed by Amdeberhan in 2012.

Log-concavity and almost log-convexity of the cycle index polynomials were proved by Bender and Canfield [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 74 (1996)]. Schirmacher [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 85 (1999)] extended them to $q$-log-concavity and almost $q$-log-convexity. Motivated by these, we consider the stronger properties total positivity from the Toeplitz matrix and Hankel matrix.
By using exponential Riordan array methods, we give some criteria for total positivity of the triangular matrix of coefficients of the generalized cycle index polynomials, the Toeplitz matrix and Hankel matrix of the polynomial sequence in terms of the exponential formula, the logarithmic formula and the fractional formula, respectively.
Finally, we apply our criteria to some triangular arrays satisfying some recurrence relations, including Bessel triangles of two kinds and their generalizations, the Lah triangle and its generalization, the idempotent triangle and some triangles related to binomial coefficients, rook polynomials and Laguerre polynomials. We not only get total positivity of these lower-triangles, and $q$-Stieltjes moment properties and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of their row-generating functions, but also prove that their triangular convolutions preserve Stieltjes moment property. In particular, we solve a conjecture of Sokal on $q$-Stieltjes moment property of rook polynomials.
Log-convexity and the cycle index polynomials with relation to compound Poisson distributions
We extend the exponential formula by Bender and Canfield (1996), which relates log-concavity and the cycle index polynomials. The extension clarifies the log-convexity relation. The proof is by noticing the property of a compound Poisson distribution together with its moment generating function. We also give a combinatorial proof of extended "log-convex part" referring Bender and Canfield's approach, where the formula by Bruijn and Erdös (1953) is additionally exploited. The combinatorial approach yields richer structural results more than log-convexity. Furthermore, we consider normal and binomial convolutions of sequences which satisfy the exponential formula. The operations generate interesting examples which are not included in well known laws about log-concavity/convexity.

Gessel's famous Bessel determinant formula gives the generating function of the number of permutations without increasing subsequences of a given length. Ekhad and Zeilberger proposed the challenge of finding a suitable generalization for permutations of multisets in which all multiplicities are equal, that is, to count words of length $rn$ from an alphabet consisting of $n$ letters in which each letter appears exactly $r$ times and which have no increasing subsequences of length $d$.
In this paper we present such a generating function expressible as a multiple integral of the product of a Gessel-type Toeplitz determinant with the exponentiated cycle index polynomial of the symmetric group on $r$ elements.
Approximating the Tutte polynomial of a binary matroid and other related combinatorial polynomials

We consider the problem of approximating certain combinatorial polynomials. First, we consider the problem of approximating the Tutte polynomial of a binary matroid with parameters q>= 2 and gamma. (Relative to the classical (x,y) parameterisation, q=(x-1)(y-1) and gamma=y-1.) A graph is a special case of a binary matroid, so earlier work by the authors shows inapproximability (subject to certain complexity assumptions) for q>2, apart from the trivial case gamma=0. The situation for q=2 is different. Previous results for graphs imply inapproximability in the region -2<=gamma<0, apart from at two "special points" where the polynomial can be computed exactly in polynomial time. For binary matroids, we extend this result by showing (i) there is no FPRAS in the region gamma<-2 unless NP=RP, and (ii) in the region gamma>0, the approximation problem is hard for the complexity class #RHPi_1 under approximation-preserving (AP) reducibility. The latter result indicates a gap in approximation complexity at q=2: whereas an FPRAS is known in the graphical case, there can be none in the binary matroid case, unless there is an FPRAS for all of #RHPi_1. The result also implies that it is computationally difficult to approximate the weight enumerator of a binary linear code, apart from at the special weights at which the problem is exactly solvable in polynomial time. As a consequence, we show that approximating the cycle index polynomial of a permutation group is hard for #RHPi_1 under AP-reducibility, partially resolving a question that we first posed in 1992.
