Hankel Transform and $(α,β)$ Somos-4 Sequences
An $(α,β)$ Somos-$4$ sequence $S_n$ is defined by the recurrence $S_nS_{n-4}=αS_{n-1}S_{n-3}+βS_{n-2}^2$ ($n\geq 4$), with suitable initial values, where $α$ and $β$ are constant parameters. A widely studied question is the following: When does the Hankel transform of a generating function become an $(α,β)$ Somos-4 sequence? In particular, how can $α$ and $β$ be derived for such a function? A sufficient condition for this problem has been established by Wang and Zhang. In this paper, we obtain the following three main results. (i): We extend the Wang--Zhang sufficient condition by working over the rational function field. Then we combine this result with the Sulanke--Xin quadratic transformation to resolve all of Barry's currently unsolved $(α,β)$ Somos-4 conjectures, which arise in diverse contexts, including generalized Catalan recurrences, Riordan arrays, generalized Bernstein arrays, and elliptic curves. (ii): We show that the odd and even subsequences of an $(α,β)$ Somos-4 sequence are again $(α,β)$ Somos-4 sequences with transformed parameters. This is employed to establish Barry's Hurwitz transform conjecture. (iii): Using the theory of orthogonal polynomials, we prove a Hankel determinant formula and thereby prove a conjecture related to the $(α,β)$ Somos-4 sequence. In addition, we prove some conjectures on formulas for periodic Hankel determinants.

Lattice walks, pattern statistics, and Riordan arrays
We introduce a new class of Riordan matrices corresponding to lattice walks with colored steps. We show that this class corresponds to a class of pseudo-involutions and then find both generating functions and explicit combinatorial formulas for entries of these Riordan matrices. We use these Riordan matrices to find an explicit combinatorial formula for the occurences of an arbitrary pattern in our lattice walks. Finally, we define a distributive lattice on our lattice walks and connect our new RNA matrices to Whitney numbers of lattices.
Periodicities in the Riordan arrays of polynomials over finite fields
We study periodicity properties of the 2-D $\bigl(p_1(t)/p_2(t),\, tp_3(t)\bigr)$ and 3-D $\bigl(p_1(t)/p_2(t),\, tp_3(t),\, p_4(t)\bigr)$ Riordan arrays over a finite field ${\mathbb F}_q$, where each $p_i(t)$ is a polynomial with $p_i(0)\neq 0$. We show that the columns of the 2-D Riordan array are eventually periodic sequences, where a circulant matrix generated by the coefficients of $p_3(t)$ determines the behavior of this periodicity as the column index grows indefinitely. Furthermore, we prove that the preperiodic column partial sums of the 2-D array are periodic, and present a family of the Riordan arrays for which such sequences of partial sums are identically zero. We also show that the layers of the 3-D Riordan array contain periodic orbits related to each other via powers of a circulant matrix generated by the coefficients of $p_4(t)$.

Planar networks and total positivity of Riordan arrays
In 2015, Chen, Liang and Wang provided several sufficient conditions for the total positivity of Riordan arrays and asked for combinatorial proofs of these results. In this paper, we present such proofs by constructing suitable planar networks with non-negative weights and applying the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma. Moreover, we slightly generalize one of the results and give more totally positive Riordan arrays.

A unified planar network approach to total positivity of combinatorial matrices and real-rootedness of polynomials
We present a common sufficient condition for the total positivity of combinatorial triangles and their reversals, as well as the real-rootedness of generating functions of the rows. The proof technique is to construct a unified planar network that represent the matrix, its reversal, and the Toeplitz matrices of rows, respectively, when selecting different sets of sources and sinks. These results can be applied to the exponential Riordan arrays, the iteration matrices and the $n$-recursive matrices. As consequences, we prove the total positivity and real-rootedness properties associated to many well-known combinatorial numbers, including the Stirling numbers of both kinds (of type A and type B), the Lah numbers, the idempotent numbers, the Delannoy numbers, and the derangement numbers of type A and type B.

Enumeration of paths in a hexagonal circle packing
We investigate paths in the hexagonal circle packing and enumerate them with respect to width, height, number of steps, area, and kissing number. Functional equations and the kernel method yield closed bivariate generating functions together with coefficient formulas and asymptotics. We establish bijections with skew Dyck paths, constrained Motzkin paths, and peakless Motzkin paths, and show that several of the associated counting arrays are Riordan arrays. Continued-fraction expansions for the area and kissing-number enumerators are also obtained.

Sequence Characterization of Multiple Almost-Riordan Arrays and Their Compressions
This is the second paper of the paper series on multiple Riordan arrays. In this paper, based on the study of multiple Riordan arrays and the multiple Riordan group, we define multiple almost-Riordan arrays and find that the set of all multiple almost-Riordan arrays forms a group, called the multiple almost-Riordan group. We also obtain the sequence characteristics of multiple almost-Riordan arrays and give the production matrices for multiple almost-Riordan arrays. We define the compression of multiple almost-Riordan arrays and provide their sequence characterization.

Sheffer Polynomials and the s-ordering of Exponential Boson Operators
Published in J. Math. Phys. 66 (2025), 122101 • View PublicationBIB
The s-ordered form of any product of single-mode boson creation and annihilation operators, containing only a single annihilator, is computed explicitly. The s-ordering concept originated in quantum optics, but subsumes normal, symmetric (Weyl), and anti-normal ordering for any two operators satisfying a canonical commutation relation. Because the s-ordering map can be viewed as producing a function of a complex variable, its inverse is a quantization map that takes such "classical" functions to quantum operators. The explicit s-ordered expressions are derived with the aid of a parametric family of Sheffer polynomial sequences (or equivalently a parametric exponential Riordan array of polynomial coefficients), called the Hsu-Shiue family. To yield orderings interpolating between normal and anti-normal, this family must be extended.

Elliptic Curves, Riordan arrays and Lattice Paths
In this note, we show that to each elliptic curve of the form $$y^2-axy-y=x^3-bx^2-cx,$$ we can associate a family of lattice paths whose step set is determined by the parameters of the elliptic curve. The enumeration of these lattice paths is by means of an associated Riordan array. The curves and the paths have associated Somos $4$ sequences which are essentially the same. For the curves the link to Somos $4$ sequences is a classical result, via the elliptic divisibility sequence. For the paths the link is via a Hankel transform.

Enumerating several statistics of r-Colored Dyck paths with no dd-steps having the same colors
Published in Discrete Mathematics 348 (2025) • View PublicationBIB
An $r$-colored Dyck path is a Dyck path with all $\mathbf{d}$-steps having one of $r$ colors in $[r]=\{1, 2, \dots, r\}$. In this paper, we consider several statistics on the set $\mathcal{A}_{n,0}^{(r)}$ of $r$-colored Dyck paths of length $2n$ with no two consecutive $\mathbf{d}$-steps having the same colors. Precisely, the paper studies the statistics ``number of points" at level $\ell$, ``number of $\mathbf{u}$-steps" at level $\ell+1$, ``number of peaks" at level $\ell+1$ and ``number of $\mathbf{udu}$-steps" on the set $\mathcal{A}_{n,0}^{(r)}$. The counting formulas of the first three statistics are established by Riordan arrays related to $S(a,b; x)$, the weighted generating function of $(a,b)$-Schröder paths. By a useful and surprising relations satisfied by $S(a,b; x)$, several identities related to these counting formulas are also described.

$d$-orthogonal polynomials, Fuss-Catalan matrices and lattice paths
In this note, we show how to define certain Riordan arrays, that we call the Fuss-Catalan-Riordan arrays, by means of a special family of $d$-orthogonal polynomials. We relate the Fuss-Catalan Riordan arrays to the Fuss Catalan numbers, and to certain lattice paths. We emphasise the role of the production matrices of the Riordan arrays that we encounter in our study.

Notes on Riordan arrays and lattice paths
In this note, we explore links between Riordan arrays and lattice paths. We begin by describing Riordan arrays, and some of their generalizations, including rectifications and triangulations. We the consider Riordan array links to lattice paths with steps of type $(a,b)$, where $a$ and $b$ are nonnegative. We consider common Riordan arrays that are linked to lattice paths, as well as showing links between almost Riordan arrays and lattice paths. We then consider lattice paths with step sets that include downward steps, and show how the $A$-matrix characterization of Riordan arrays plays a key role in analysing corresponding Riordan arrays.

The Multiple Riordan Group and the Multiple Riordan Type Arrays
This is the first paper of a sequence papers on the multiple Riordan group and the multiple Riordon type arrays. We give a comprehensive discussion of the multiple Riordan arrays and characterize them by an $A$-sequence and multiple $Z$-sequences. The multiple Riordan group and some of its subgroups are defined. In addition, we give compressions of multiple Riordan arrays and their sequence characterizations. The total positivity of the compressions of multiple Riordan arrays is studied.

A New Representation of Ewens-Pitman's Partition Structure and Its Characterization via Riordan Array Sums
Ewens-Pitman's partition structure arises as a system of sampling consistent probability distributions on set partitions induced by the Pitman-Yor process. It is widely used in statistical applications, particularly in species sampling models in Bayesian nonparametrics. Drawing references from the area of representation theory of the infinite symmetric group, we view Ewens-Pitman's partition structure as an example of a non-extreme harmonic function on a branching graph, specifically, the Kingman graph. Taking this perspective enables us to obtain combinatorial and algebraic constructions of this distribution using the interpolation polynomial approach proposed by Borodin and Olshanski (The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 7, 2000). We provide a new explicit representation of Ewens-Pitman's partition structure using modern umbral interpolation based on Sheffer polynomial sequences. In addition, we show that a certain type of marginals of this distribution can be computed using weighted row sums of a Riordan array. In this way, we show that some summary statistics and estimators derived from Ewens-Pitman's partition structure can be obtained using methods of generating functions. This approach simplifies otherwise cumbersome calculations of these quantities often involving various special combinatorial functions. In addition, it has the added benefit of being amenable to symbolic computation.

Pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group and Chebyshev polynomials
Generalizing the results in our previous paper, we consider pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group where the generating function $g$ for the first column of a Riordan array satisfies a functional equation of certain types involving a polynomial. For those types of equations, we find the pseudo-involutory companion of $g$. We also develop a general method for finding B-functions of Riordan pseudo-involutions in the cases we consider, and show that these B-functions involve Chebyshev polynomials. We apply our method for several families of Riordan arrays, obtaining new results and deriving known results more efficiently.

Cointeraction on noncrossing partitions and related polynomial invariants
We study the structure of two cointeracting bialgebras on noncrossing partitions appearing in the theory of free probability. The first coproduct is given by separation of the blocks of the partitions into two parts, with respect to the nestings, while the second one is given by fusion of blocks. This structure implies the existence of a unique polynomial invariant respecting the product and both coproducts. We give a combinatorial interpretation of this invariant, study its values at -1 and use it for the computation of the antipode. We also give several results on its coefficients when applied to noncrossing partitions with no nesting. This leads to unexpected links with harmonic nested sums, Riordan arrays, composition of formal series and generalized Stirling numbers. This polynomial invariant is shown to be related to other ones, counting increasing or strictly increasing maps for the nesting order on noncrossing partitions, through the action of several characters.

Water Cells in Compositions of 1s and 2s
Published in Fibonacci Quart. 63(2) (2025) 400-411 • View PublicationBIB
Mansour and Shattuck introduced the notion of water cells for integer compositions in 2018. We focus on compositions with parts restricted to 1 and 2 and consider the array of counts for such compositions of $n$ with $k$ water cells, establishing generating functions for the columns and diagonal sums, recurrences within the array in the spirit of Pascal's lemma, and connections to other restricted compositions. Most of our proofs are combinatorial, but we also make connections to Riordan arrays.

The Double Almost-Riordan Arrays and Their Sequence Characterization, Compression, and Total Positivity
In this paper, we define double almost-Riordan arrays and find that the set of all double almost-Riordan arrays forms a group, called the double almost-Riordan group. We also obtain the sequence characteristics of double almost-Riordan arrays and give the production matrices for double almost-Riordan arrays. We define the compression of double almost-Riordan arrays and present their sequence characterization. Finally we give a characteristic for the total positivity of double Riordan arrays, by using which we discuss the total positivity for compressed double almost-Riordan arrays.

Finding an Isomorphism between the Riordan Group and a Subgroup of the Double Riordan Group
The Riordan group is a set of infinite lower-triangular matrices defined by two generating functions, $g$ and $f$. The elements of the group are called Riordan arrays, denoted by $(g,f)$, and the $k$th column of a Riordan array is given by the function $gf^k$. The Double Riordan group is defined similarly using three generating functions $g$, $f_1$, and $f_2$, where $g$ is an even function and $f_1$ and $f_2$ are odd functions. This group generalizes the Checkerboard subgroup of the Riordan group, where $g$ is even and $f$ is odd. An open question posed by Davenport, Shapiro, and Woodson was if there exists an isomorphism between the Riordan group and a subgroup of the Double Riordan group. This question is answered in this article.
