On the partial sums of Riordan arrays
We define two notions of partial sums of a Riordan array, corresponding respectively to the partial sums of the rows and the partial sums of the columns of the Riordan array in question. We characterize the matrices that arise from these operations. On the one hand, we obtain a new Riordan array, while on the other hand, we obtain a rectangular array which has an inverse that is a lower Hessenberg matrix. We examine the structure of these Hessenberg matrices. We end with a generalization linked to the Fibonacci numbers and phyllotaxis.

Yet another criterion for the total positivity of Riordan arrays
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $R=\mathcal{R}(d(t),h(t))$ be a Riordan array, where $d(t)=\sum_{n\ge 0}d_nt^n$ and $h(t)=\sum_{n\ge 0}h_nt^n$. We show that if the matrix \begin{equation*} \left[\begin{array}{ccccc} d_0 & h_0 & 0 & 0 &\cdots\\ d_1 & h_1 & h_0 & 0 &\\ d_2 & h_2 & h_1 & h_0 &\\ \vdots&\vdots&&&\ddots \end{array}\right] \end{equation*} is totally positive, then so is the Riordan array $R$.

Conjectures and results on some generalized Rueppel sequences
In this note we use the analogy between the Catalan sequence and the Rueppel sequence to derive a variety of conjectures surrounding the Hankel transforms of a number of sequences closely related to the Rueppel sequence. Use is made of the representation of suitable generating functions by Stieltjes continued fractions. We define polynomial sequences by introducing parameters that define generalized Rueppel sequences, and we show that such polynomials have coefficient arrays that are Riordan arrays. Finally we conjecture the form of a product of Hankel transforms arising from the Rueppel sequence.

Constructing Pseudo-involutions in the Riordan Group
Riordan arrays, denoted by pairs of generating functions (g(z), f(z)), are infinite lower-triangular matrices that are used as combinatorial tools. In this paper, we present Riordan and stochastic Riordan arrays that have connections to the Fibonacci and modified Lucas numbers. Then, we present some pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group that are based on constructions starting with a certain generating function g(z). We also present a theorem that shows how to construct pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group starting with a certain generating function f(z) whose additive inverse has compositional order 2. The theorem is then used to construct more pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group where some arrays have connections to the Fibonacci and modified Lucas numbers. A MATLAB algorithm for constructing the pseudo-involutions is also given.

Centralizers of the Riordan Group
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we discuss centralizers in the Riordan group. We will see that Faà di Bruno's formula is an application of the Fundamental Theorem of Riordan arrays. Then the composition group of formal power series in ${\cal F}_1$ is studied to construct the centralizers of Bell type and Lagrange type Riordan arrays. Our tools are the $A$-sequences of Riordan arrays and Faà di Bruno's formula. Some combinatorial explanation and discussion about related algebraic topics are also given.

Total positivity of some polynomial matrices that enumerate labeled trees and forests, I. Forests of rooted labeled trees
Published in Monatsh. Math. 200, 389--452 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
We consider the lower-triangular matrix of generating polynomials that enumerate $k$-component forests of rooted trees on the vertex set $[n]$ according to the number of improper edges (generalizations of the Ramanujan polynomials). We show that this matrix is coefficientwise totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive. More generally, we define the generic rooted-forest polynomials by introducing also a weight $m! \, φ_m$ for each vertex with $m$ proper children. We show that if the weight sequence $φ$ is Toeplitz-totally positive, then the two foregoing total-positivity results continue to hold. Our proofs use production matrices and exponential Riordan arrays.

Centered polygon numbers, heptagons and nonagons, and the Robbins numbers
In this note, we explore certain determinantal descriptions of the Robbins numbers. Techniques used for this include continued fractions, Riordan arrays and series inversion. Proven and conjectured representations involve the determinants of both Hankel and symmetric matrices. In specific cases, links are drawn to centered polygonal numbers, and to heptagons and nonagons. We conjecture a Hankel transform determinant for the Robbins numbers related to the Fibonacci and the Catalan numbers.
On the $r$-Derangements of type B
Extensions of a set partition obtained by imposing bounds on the size of the parts and the coloring of some of the elements are examined. Combinatorial properties and the generating functions of some counting sequences associated with these partitions are established. Connections with Riordan arrays are presented.

On the duals of the Fibonacci and Catalan-Fibonacci polynomials and Motzkin paths
We use the inversion of coefficient arrays to define dual polynomials to the Fibonacci and Catalan-Fibonacci polynomials, and we explore the properties of these new polynomials sequences. Many of the arrays involved are Riordan arrays. Direct links to the counting of Motzkin paths by different statistics emerge.

On the inversion of Riordan arrays
Many Riordan arrays play a significant role in algebraic combinatorics. We explore the inversion of Riordan arrays in this context. We give a general construct for the inversion of a Riordan array, and study this in the case of various subgroups of the Riordan group. For instance, we show that the inversion of an ordinary Bell matrix is an exponential Riordan array in the associated subgroup. Examples from combinatorics and algebraic combinatorics illustrate the usefulness of such inversions. We end with a brief look at the inversion of exponential Riordan arrays. A final example places Airey's convergent factor in the context of a simple exponential Riordan array.
Colored Motzkin Paths of Higher Order
Motzkin paths of order-$\ell$ are a generalization of Motzkin paths that use steps $U=(1,1)$, $L=(1,0)$, and $D_i=(1,-i)$ for every positive integer $i \leq \ell$. We further generalize order-$\ell$ Motzkin paths by allowing for various coloring schemes on the edges of our paths. These $(\vecα,\vecβ)$-colored Motzkin paths may be enumerated via proper Riordan arrays, mimicking the techniques of Aigner in his treatment of Catalan-like numbers. After an investigation of their associated Riordan arrays, we develop bijections between $(\vecα,\vecβ)$-colored Motzkin paths and a variety of well-studied combinatorial objects. Specific coloring schemes $(\vecα,\vecβ)$ allow us to place $(\vecα,\vecβ)$-colored Motzkin paths in bijection with different subclasses of generalized $k$-Dyck paths, including $k$-Dyck paths that remain weakly above horizontal lines $y=-a$, $k$-Dyck paths whose peaks all have the same height modulo-$k$, and Fuss-Catalan generalizations of Fine paths. A general bijection is also developed between $(\vecα,\vecβ)$-colored Motzkin paths and certain subclasses of $k$-ary trees.

The second production matrix of a Riordan array
A Riordan array is defined by its production matrix. In this paper, we explore the notion of the second production matrix of a Riordan array, characterizing the matrix that is generated by it. We indicate how this procedure can be generalized to the so-called $n$-th production matrix of a Riordan array.

Notes on the Hankel transform of linear combinations of consecutive pairs of Catalan numbers
We provide a context around a conjectured closed form for the Hankel transform of linear combinations of consecutive pairs of Catalan numbers. This generalizes the formula for the Hankel transforms of the shifted Catalan numbers and the known results for linear combinations of pairs of Catalan numbers. Many interesting number triangles emerge, some of which we analyze using the language of Riordan arrays.

One-pth Riordan Arrays in the Construction of Identities
For an integer $p\geq 2$ we construct vertical and horizontal one-pth Riordan arrays from a Riordan array. When $p=2$, one-pth Riordan arrays reduced to well known half Riordan arrays. The generating functions of the $A$-sequences of vertical and horizontal one-pth Riordan arrays are found. The vertical and horizontal one-pth Riordan arrays provide an approach to construct many identities. They can also be used to verify some well known identities readily.

Riordan Groups in higher Dimensions
The classical Riordan groups associated to a given commutative ring are groups of infinite matrices (called Riordan arrays) associated to pairs of formal power series in one variable. The Fundamental Theorem of Riordan Arrays relates matrix multiplication to two group actions on such series, namely formal (convolution) multiplication and formal composition. We define the analogous Riordan groups involving formal power series in several variables, and establish the analogue of the Fundamental Theorem in that context. We discuss related groups of Laurent series and pose some questions.

New Combinatorial Interpretations of the Fibonacci Numbers Squared, Golden Rectangle Numbers, and Jacobsthal Numbers Using Two Types of Tile
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences 24, Article 21.3.8 (2021) • Search Publication
We consider the tiling of an $n$-board (a board of size $n\times1$) with squares of unit width and $(1,1)$-fence tiles. A $(1,1)$-fence tile is composed of two unit-width square subtiles separated by a gap of unit width. We show that the number of ways to tile an $n$-board using unit-width squares and $(1,1)$-fence tiles is equal to a Fibonacci number squared when $n$ is even and a golden rectangle number (the product of two consecutive Fibonacci numbers) when $n$ is odd. We also show that the number of tilings of boards using $n$ such square and fence tiles is a Jacobsthal number. Using combinatorial techniques we prove identities involving sums of Fibonacci and Jacobsthal numbers in a straightforward way. Some of these identities appear to be new. We also construct and obtain identities for a known Pascal-like triangle (which has alternating ones and zeros along one side) whose $(n,k)$th entry is the number of tilings using $n$ tiles of which $k$ are fence tiles. There is a simple relation between this triangle and the analogous one for tilings of an $n$-board. Connections between the triangles and Riordan arrays are also demonstrated. With the help of the triangles, we express the Fibonacci numbers squared, golden rectangle numbers, and Jacobsthal numbers as double sums of products of two binomial coefficients.

On the Central Description of the Group of Riordan Arrays
We provide an alternative description of the group of Riordan arrays, by using two power series of the form $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} g_n x^n$, where $g_0 \ne 0$ to build a typical element of the constructed group. We relate these elements to Riordan arrays in the usual description, showing that each newly constructed element is the vertical half of a "usual" element. The product rules and the construction of the inverse are given in this new description, which we call a "central" description, because of links to the central coefficients of Riordan arrays. This is done for the case of ordinary generating functions. Finally, we briefly look at the exponential case.

Generalized Path Pairs and Fuss-Catalan Triangles
Path pairs are a modification of parallelogram polyominoes that provide yet another combinatorial interpretation of the Catalan numbers. More generally, the number of path pairs of length $n$ and distance $δ$ corresponds to the $(n-1,δ-1)$ entry of Shapiro's so-called Catalan triangle. In this paper, we widen the notion of path pairs $(γ_1,γ_2)$ to the situation where $γ_1$ and $γ_2$ may have different lengths, and then enforce divisibility conditions on runs of vertical steps in $γ_2$. This creates a two-parameter family of integer triangles that generalize the Catalan triangle and qualify as proper Riordan arrays for many choices of parameters. In particular, we use generalized path pairs to provide a new combinatorial interpretation for all entries in every proper Riordan array $\mathcal{R}(d(t),h(t))$ of the form $d(t) = C_k(t)^i$, $h(t) = t \kern+1pt C_k(t)^k$, where $1 \leq i \leq k$ and $C_k(t)$ is the generating function for some sequence of Fuss-Catalan numbers (some $k \geq 2$). Closed formulas are then provided for the number of generalized path pairs across an even broader range of parameters, as well as for the number of weak path pairs with a fixed number of non-initial intersections.

Total positivity from the exponential Riordan arrays
Published • View PublicationBIB
Log-concavity and almost log-convexity of the cycle index polynomials were proved by Bender and Canfield [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 74 (1996)]. Schirmacher [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 85 (1999)] extended them to $q$-log-concavity and almost $q$-log-convexity. Motivated by these, we consider the stronger properties total positivity from the Toeplitz matrix and Hankel matrix. By using exponential Riordan array methods, we give some criteria for total positivity of the triangular matrix of coefficients of the generalized cycle index polynomials, the Toeplitz matrix and Hankel matrix of the polynomial sequence in terms of the exponential formula, the logarithmic formula and the fractional formula, respectively. Finally, we apply our criteria to some triangular arrays satisfying some recurrence relations, including Bessel triangles of two kinds and their generalizations, the Lah triangle and its generalization, the idempotent triangle and some triangles related to binomial coefficients, rook polynomials and Laguerre polynomials. We not only get total positivity of these lower-triangles, and $q$-Stieltjes moment properties and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of their row-generating functions, but also prove that their triangular convolutions preserve Stieltjes moment property. In particular, we solve a conjecture of Sokal on $q$-Stieltjes moment property of rook polynomials.
Generalized Ordered Set Partitions
In this paper, we consider ordered set partitions obtained by imposing conditions on the size of the lists, and such that the first $r$ elements are in distinct blocks, respectively. We introduce a generalization of the Lah numbers. For this new combinatorial sequence we derive its exponential generating function, some recurrence relations, and combinatorial identities. We prove and present results using combinatorial arguments, generating functions, the symbolic method and Riordan arrays. For some specific cases we provide a combinatorial interpretation for the inverse matrix of the generalized Lah numbers by means of two families of posets.
