On a Central Transform of Integer Sequences
We use the concept of the half of a lower-triangular matrix to define a transformation on integer sequences. We explore the properties of this transformation, including in some cases a study of the Hankel transform of the transformed sequences. Starting from simple sequences with elementary rational generating functions, we obtain many sequences of combinatorial significance. We make extensive use of techniques drawn from the theory of Riordan arrays.

We use production matrices to count several classes of geometric graphs. We present novel production matrices for non-crossing partitions, connected geometric graphs, and k-angulations, which provide another way of counting the number of such objects. Counting geometric graphs is then equivalent to calculating the powers of a production matrix. Applying the technique of Riordan Arrays to these production matrices, we establish new formulas for the numbers of geometric graphs as well as combinatorial identities derived from the production matrices. Further, we obtain the characteristic polynomial and the eigenvectors of such production matrices.
Characterizations of the Borel triangle and Borel polynomials
We use Riordan array theory to give characterizations of the Borel triangle and its associated polynomial sequence. We show that the Borel polynomials are the moment sequence for a family of orthogonal polynomials whose coefficient array is a Riordan array. The role of the Catalan matrix in defining the Borel triangle is examined. We generalize the Borel triangle to a family of two parameter triangles. Generating functions are expressed as Jacobi continued fractions, as well as the zeros of appropriate quadratic expressions. The Borel triangle is exhibited as a Hadamard product of matrices. We investigate the reversions of the triangles studied. We introduce the notion of Fuss-Borel triangles and Fuss-Catalan triangles. We end with some remarks on the Catalan triangle.
Chebyshev moments and Riordan involutions
We show that the coefficient array of a family of Chebyshev moments defines an involution in the group of Riordan arrays. We then extend this result to certain families of $d$-orthogonal polynomials.
A Note on Riordan Arrays with Catalan Halves
For a lower triangular matrix $(t_{n,k})$ we call the matrices with respective entries $(t_{2n-k,n})$ and $(t_{2n,n+k})$ the vertical and the horizontal halves. In this note, we discuss Riordan arrays whose halves are closely related to the Catalan matrices.
Riordan arrays, the $A$-matrix, and Somos $4$ sequences
We characterize certain Riordan arrays by their $A$-matrices and $ρ$ sequences. We conjecture the form of a generic $A$-matrix which leads to Somos $4$ sequences. We find an $A$-matrix that produces a Riordan quasi-involution, and we study the $A$-matrices and $ρ$ sequences of the moment matrices of certain perturbed orthogonal polynomials.
Generalized Catalan recurrences, Riordan arrays, elliptic curves, and orthogonal polynomials
We show that the Catalan-Schroeder convolution recurrences and their higher order generalizations can be solved using Riordan arrays and the Catalan numbers. We investigate the Hankel transforms of many of the recurrence solutions, and indicate that Somos $4$ sequences often arise. We exhibit relations between recurrences, Riordan arrays, elliptic curves and Somos $4$ sequences. We furthermore indicate how one can associate a family of orthogonal polynomials to a point on an elliptic curve, whose moments are related to recurrence solutions.
$A$-sequences, $Z$-sequence, and $B$-sequences of Riordan Matrices
We defined two type $B$-sequences of Riordan arrays and present the $A$-sequence characterization and $Z$-sequence characterization of the Riordan matrices with two type $B$-sequences. The subgroups characterized by $A$-sequences and $Z$-sequences are studied. The application of the sequence characterization to the RNA type matrices is discussed. Finally, we investigate the $A$-, $Z$-, and $B$-sequences of the Pascal like Riordan matrices.

Let $r(n,k)$ (resp. $s(n,k)$) be the number of Schröder paths (resp. little Schröder paths) of length $2n$ with $k$ hills, and set $r(0,0)=s(0,0)=1$. We bijectively establish the following recurrence relations: \begin{align*} r(n,0)&=\sum\limits_{j=0}^{n-1}2^{j}r(n-1,j), r(n,k)&=r(n-1,k-1)+\sum\limits_{j=k}^{n-1}2^{j-k}r(n-1,j),\quad 1\le k\le n, s(n,0) &=\sum\limits_{j=1}^{n-1}2\cdot3^{j-1}s(n-1,j), s(n,k) &=s(n-1,k-1)+\sum\limits_{j=k+1}^{n-1}2\cdot3^{j-k-1}s(n-1,j),\quad 1\le k\le n. \end{align*} The infinite lower triangular matrices $[r(n,k)]_{n,k\ge 0}$ and $[s(n,k)]_{n,k\ge 0}$, whose row sums produce the large and little Schröder numbers respectively, are two Riordan arrays of Bell type. Hence the above recurrences can also be deduced from their $A$- and $Z$-sequences characterizations.
On the other hand, it is well-known that the large Schröder numbers also enumerate separable permutations. This propelled us to reveal the connection with a lesser-known permutation statistic, called initial ascending run, whose distribution on separable permutations is shown to be given by $[r(n,k)]_{n,k\ge 0}$ as well.
Constant coefficient Laurent biorthogonal polynomials, Riordan arrays and moment sequences
We study properties of constant coefficient Laurent biorthogonal polynomials using Riordan arrays. We give details of related orthogonal polynomials, and we explore relationships between the moments of these orthogonal polynomials, the moments of the defining Laurent biorthogonal polynomials, and the expansions of $T$-fractions. Closed form expressions are given for the polynomials and their moments.

Every Riordan array has what we call a horizontal half and a vertical half. These halves of a Riordan array have been studied separately before. Here, we place them in a common context, showing that one may be obtained from the other. We also ask and answer the question: given a Riordan array, when is it the half (either horizontal of vertical) of a Riordan array?
On the $r$-shifted central triangles of a Riordan array
Let $A$ be a proper Riordan array with general element $a_{n,k}$. We study the one parameter family of matrices whose general elements are given by $a_{2n+r, n+k+r}$. We show that each such matrix can be factored into a product of a Riordan array and the original Riordan array $A$, thus exhibiting each element of the family as a Riordan array. We find transition relations between the elements of the family, and examples are given. Lagrange inversion is used as a main tool in the proof of these results.
On pseudo-involutions, involutions and quasi-involutions in the group of almost Riordan arrays
The group of almost Riordan arrays contains the group of Riordan arrays as a subgroup. In this note, we exhibit examples of pseudo-involutions, involutions and quasi-involutions in the group of almost Riordan arrays.
Riordan Pseudo-Involutions, Continued Fractions and Somos $4$ Sequences
We define a three parameter family of Bell pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group. The defining sequences have generating functions that are expressible as continued fractions. We indicate that the Hankel transforms of the defining sequences, and of the $A$ sequences of the corresponding Riordan arrays, can be associated with Somos $4$ sequence. We give examples where these sequences can be associated with elliptic curves, and we exhibit instances where elliptic curves can give rise to associated Riordan pseudo-involutions. In the case of a particular one parameter family of elliptic curves, we show how we can associate to each such curve a unique Bell pseudo-involution.

We consider elements of finite order in the Riordan group $\cal R$ over a field of characteristic $0$. Viewing $\cal R$ as a semi-direct product of groups of formal power series, we solve, for all $n \geq 2$, two foundational questions posed by L. Shapiro for the case $n = 2$ (`involutions'): Given a formal power series $F(x)$ of finite compositional order and an integer $n\geq 2$, Theorem 1 states, exactly which $g(x)$ make $\big(g(x), F(x)\big)$ a Riordan element of order $n$. Theorem 2 classifies finite-order Riordan group elements up to conjugation in $\cal R$. Viewing $\cal R$ as a group of infinite lower triangular matrices, we interpret Theorem 1 in terms of existence of eigenvectors and Theorem 2 as a normal form for finite order Riordan arrays under similarity. These lead to Theorem 3, a formula for all eigenvectors of finite order Riordan arrays; and we show how this can lead to interesting combinatorial identities. We then relate our work to papers of Cheon and Kim which motivated this paper and we solve the Open question which they posed. Finally, this circle of ideas gives a new proof of C. Marshall's theorem, which finds the unique $F(x)$, given bi-invertible $g(x)$, such that $\big(g(x), F(x))$ is an involution.
On the $f$-Matrices of Pascal-like Triangles Defined by Riordan Arrays
We define and characterize the $f$-matrices associated to Pascal-like matrices that are defined by ordinary and exponential Riordan arrays. These generalize the face matrices of simplices and hypercubes. Their generating functions can be expressed simply in terms of continued fractions, which are shown to be transformations of the generating functions of the corresponding $γ$- and $h$-matrices.
The $γ$-Vectors of Pascal-like Triangles Defined by Riordan Arrays
We define and characterize the $γ$-matrix associated to Pascal-like matrices that are defined by ordinary and exponential Riordan arrays. We also define and characterize the $γ$-matrix of the reversions of these triangles, in the case of ordinary Riordan arrays. We are led to the $γ$-matrices of a one-parameter family of generalized Narayana triangles. Thus these matrices generalize the matrix of $γ$-vectors of the associahedron. The principal tools used are the bivariate generating functions of the triangles and Jacobi continued fractions.
Generalized Eulerian Triangles and Some Special Production Matrices
We show how some special production matrices may be used to define families of generalized Eulerian triangles. We furthermore show that these generalized Eulerian triangles are the coefficient arrays of polynomials which are the moments of families of orthogonal polynomials. Using the previously defined $\mathcal{T}$ transform, we associate these generalized Eulerian triangles to triangles defined by Catalan generating functions. Again, these new triangles are the coefficient arrays of polynomial moment sequences. The main tools used are the Sumudu transform, Jacobi continued fractions and Riordan arrays.
The $1/k$-Eulerian Polynomials as Moments, via Exponential Riordan Arrays
Using the theory of exponential Riordan arrays, we show that the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials are moments for a paramaterized family of orthogonal polynomials. In addition, we show that the related Savage-Viswanathan polynomials are also moments for appropriate families of orthogonal polynomials. We provide continued fraction ordinary generating functions and Hankel transforms for these moments, as well as the three-term recurrences for the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. We provide formulas for the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials and the Savage-Viswanathan polynomials involving the Stirling numbers of the first and the second kind. Finally we show that the once-shifted polynomials are again moment sequences.
On the combinatorics of Riordan arrays and Sheffer polynomials: monoids, operads and monops
We introduce a new algebraic construction, {\em monop}, that combines monoids (with respect to the product of species), and operads (monoids with respect to the substitution of species) in the same algebraic structure. By the use of properties of cancellative set-monops we construct a family of partially ordered sets whose prototypical examples are the Dowling lattices. They generalize the partition posets associated to a cancellative operad, and the subset posets associated to a cancellative monoid. Their generalized Withney numbers of the first and second kind are the entries of a Riordan matrix and its inverse. Equivalently, they are the connecting coefficients of two umbral inverse Sheffer sequences with the family of powers $\{x^n\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$. We study algebraic monops, their associated algebras and the free monop-algebras, as part of a program in progress to develop a theory of Koszul duality for monops.
