Enumerating Multi-Operator Monomials in Commutative and Noncommutative Settings
We study enumeration problems for multi-operator monomials generated from one indeterminate by an associative multiplication together with finitely many unary operators. We consider four regimes, according to whether multiplication is commutative and whether the unary operators commute. In the case where the unary operators do not commute, we obtain explicit multigraded generating functions and coefficient formulas, including a multinomial refinement of the Narayana numbers, together with interpretations in terms of rooted trees, restricted lattice paths, and binary trees. When the unary operators commute, we derive canonical representatives and effective recurrences, with corresponding monotonicity conditions in the combinatorial models. When multiplication is commutative, the sequence decomposition is replaced by a multiset decomposition, leading to exp--log generating functions and Euler-transform recurrences. In special cases, the resulting sequences recover classical families including the Catalan numbers, the small Schröder numbers, and rooted-tree numbers.

On separable permutations and three other pairs in the Schröder class
We study positional statistics for four families of pattern-avoiding permutations counted by the large Schröder numbers. Specifically, we focus on the pairs of patterns {2413,3142} (separable permutations), {1324,1423}, {1423,2413}, and {1324,2134}. For each class, we derive multivariate generating functions that track the relative positions of specific entries. Our approach combines structural decompositions with the kernel method to obtain explicit formulas involving the generating function for the Schröder numbers. As a byproduct, we obtain alternative proofs that each of these classes is enumerated by the Schröder numbers. We also identify several known triangular arrays arising from our positional refinements, including connections to the central binomial coefficients and sequences appearing in the work of Kreweras on covering hierarchies.

Combinatorial equivalence of separable elements in types $A$ and $B$
We study the combinatorial equivalence of separable elements in types $A$ and $B$. A bijection is constructed from the set of separable permutations in the symmetric group $S_{n+1}$ to the set of separable signed permutations in the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$. This bijection preserves descent statistics and induces a poset isomorphism under the left weak order. As a consequence, separable signed permutations are enumerated by the large Schröder numbers, and their descent polynomials are shown to be $γ$-positive. Building on a recursive characterization of separable signed permutations via direct sum and skew sum operations, we derive explicit product formulas for the rank generating functions of the principal upper and lower ideals of separable signed permutations under the left weak order.

The Power Contamination Problem on Grids Revisited: Optimality, Combinatorics, and Links to Integer Sequences
This paper presents a combinatorial study of the power contamination problem, a dynamic variant of power domination modeled on grid graphs. We resolve a conjecture posed by Ainouche and Bouroubi (2021) by proving it is false and instead establish the exact value of the power contamination number on grid graphs. Furthermore, we derive recurrence relations for this number and initiate the enumeration of optimal contamination sets. We prove that the number of optimal solutions for specific grid families corresponds to well-known integer sequences, including those counting ternary words with forbidden subwords and the large Schröder numbers. This work settles the fundamental combinatorial questions of the power contamination problem on grids and reveals its rich connections to classical combinatorics.

On a New Congruence in the Catalan Triangle
For $0\leq k \leq n$, the number $C(n,k)$ represents the number of all lattice paths in the plane from the point $(0,0)$ to the point $(n,k)$, using steps $(1,0)$ and $(0,1)$, that never rise above the main diagonal $y=x$. The Fuss-Catalan number of order three $C^{(3)}_n$ represents the number of all lattice paths in the plane from the point $(0,0)$ to the point $(2n,n)$, using steps $(1,0)$ and $(0,1)$, that do not rise above the line $y=\frac{x}{2}$. We present a new alternating convolution formula for the numbers $C(2n,k)$. By using a new class of binomial sums that we call $M$ sums, we prove that this sum is divisible by $C^{(3)}_n$ and by the central binomial coefficient $\binom{2n}{n}$. We do this by examining the numbers $T(n,j)=\frac{1}{2n+1}\binom{2n+j}{j}\binom{2n+1}{n+j+1}$, for which we present a new combinatorial interpretation, connecting them to the generalized Schröder numbers of order two.

Congruences involving Delannoy numbers and Schröder numbers
The central Delannoy numbers $D_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n}{k}\binom{n+k}{k}$ and the little Schröder number $s_n=\sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{1}{n}\binom{n}{k}\binom{n}{k-1}2^{n-k}$ are important quantities. In this paper, we confirm \[\frac{2}{3n(n+1)}\sum_{k=1}^n (-1)^{n-k}k^2D_kD_{k-1}\ \text{and}\ \ \frac 1n\sum_{k=1}^n (-1)^{n-k}(4k^2+2k-1)D_{k-1}s_k\]are positive odd integers for all $n=1,2,3,\cdots$. We also show that for any prime number $p>3$, \[\sum_{k=1}^{p-1} (-1)^kk^2D_kD_{k-1}\ \equiv\ -\frac56p \pmod{p^2}\] and \[\sum_{k=1}^p (-1)^k(4k^2+2k-1)D_{k-1}s_k\ \equiv\ -4p \pmod{p^2}\text{.}\] Moreover, define \begin{equation*} s_n(x)=\sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{1}{n}\binom{n}{k}\binom{n}{k-1}x^{k-1}(x+1)^{n-k}, \end{equation*} for any $n\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ is even we have \begin{equation*} \frac{4}{n(n+1)(n+2)(1+2x)^3}\sum_{k=1}^{n}k(k+1)(k+2)s_k(x)s_{k+1}(x)\in\mathbb{Z}[x]. \end{equation*}

Log-concavity and log-convexity via distributive lattices
We prove a lemma, which we call the Order Ideal Lemma, that can be used to demonstrate a wide array of log-concavity and log-convexity results in a combinatorial manner using order ideals in distributive lattices. We use the Order Ideal Lemma to prove log-concavity and log-convexity of various sequences involving lattice paths (Catalan, Motzkin and large Schröder numbers), intervals in Young's lattice, order polynomials, specializations of Schur and Schur Q-functions, Lucas sequences, descent and peak polynomials of permutations, pattern avoidance, set partitions, and noncrossing partitions. We end with a section with conjectures and outlining future directions.

Realizability of Some Combinatorial Sequences
Published in J. Integer Sequences 27 (2024), Article 24.3.3 • Search Publication
A sequence $a=(a_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ of non-negative integers is called realizable if there is a self-map $T:X\to X$ on a set $X$ such that $a_n$ is equal to the number of periodic points of $T$ in $X$ of (not necessarily exact) period $n$, for all $n\geq1$. The sequence $a$ is called almost realizable if there exists a positive integer $m$ such that $(ma_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ is realizable. In this article, we show that certain wide classes of integer sequences are realizable, which contain many famous combinatorial sequences, such as the sequences of Apéry numbers of both kinds, central Delannoy numbers, Franel numbers, Domb numbers, Zagier numbers, and central trinomial coefficients. We also show that the sequences of Catalan numbers, Motzkin numbers, and large and small Schröder numbers are not almost realizable.
Combinatorics of the Delta conjecture at q=-1
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 7(1) (2024), 17--35 • View PublicationBIB
In the context of the shuffle theorem, many classical integer sequences appear with a natural refinement by two statistics $q$ and $t$: for example the Catalan and Schröder numbers. In particular, the bigraded Hilbert series of diagonal harmonics is a $q,t$-analog of $(n+1)^{n-1}$ (and can be written in terms of symmetric functions via the nabla operator). The motivation for this work is the observation that at $q=-1$, this $q,t$-analog becomes a $t$-analog of Euler numbers, a famous integer sequence that counts alternating permutations. We prove this observation via a more general statement, that involves the Delta operator on symmetric functions (on one side), and new combinatorial statistics on permutations involving peaks and valleys (on the other side). An important tool are the schedule numbers of a parking function first introduced by Hicks; and expanded upon by Haglund and Sergel. Other empirical observation suggest that nonnegativity at $q=-1$ holds in far greater generality.

Odd and even Fibonacci lattices arising from a Garside monoid
We study two families of lattices whose number of elements are given by the numbers in even (respectively odd) positions in the Fibonacci sequence. The even Fibonacci lattice arises as the lattice of simple elements of a Garside monoid partially ordered by left-divisibility, and the odd Fibonacci lattice is an order ideal in the even one. We give a combinatorial proof of the lattice property, relying on a description of words for the Garside element in terms of Schröder trees, and on a recursive description of the even Fibonacci lattice. This yields an explicit formula to calculate meets and joins in the lattice. As a byproduct we also obtain that the number of words for the Garside element is given by a little Schröder number.
Counting Horizontal Visibility Graphs
Horizontal visibility graphs (HVGs, for short) are a common tool used in the analysis and classification of time series with applications in many scientific fields. In this article, extending previous work by Lacasa and Luque, we prove that HVGs associated to data sequences without equal entries are completely determined by their ordered degree sequence. Moreover, we show that HVGs for data sequences without and with equal entries are counted by the Catalan numbers and the large Schröder numbers, respectively.

Pattern-functions, statistics, and shallow permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study relationships between permutation statistics and pattern-functions, counting the number of times particular patterns occur in a permutation. This allows us to write several familiar statistics as linear combinations of pattern counts, both in terms of a permutation and in terms of its image under the fundamental bijection. We use these enumerations to resolve the question of characterizing so-called "shallow" permutations, whose depth (equivalently, disarray/displacement) is minimal with respect to length and reflection length. We present this characterization in several ways, including vincular patterns, mesh patterns, and a new object that we call "arrow patterns." Furthermore, we specialize to characterizing and enumerating shallow involutions and shallow cycles, encountering the Motzkin and large Schröder numbers, respectively.

Equivalence of the Descents Statistic on Some (4,4)-Avoidance Classes of Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we compute and demonstrate the equivalence of the joint distribution of the first letter and descent statistics on six avoidance classes of permutations corresponding to two patterns of length four. This distribution is in turn shown to be equivalent to the distribution on a restricted class of inversion sequences for the statistics that record the last letter and number of distinct positive letters, affirming a recent conjecture of Lin and Kim. Members of each avoidance class of permutations and also of the class of inversion sequences are enumerated by the $n$-th large Schröder number and thus one obtains a new bivariate refinement of these numbers as a consequence. We make use of auxiliary combinatorial statistics, special generating functions (specific to each class) and the kernel method to establish our results. In some cases, we utilize the conjecture itself in a creative way to aid in solving the system of functional equations satisfied by the associated generating functions.

On a conjecture of Lin and Kim concerning a refinement of Schröder numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we compute the distribution of the first letter statistic on nine avoidance classes of permutations corresponding to two pairs of patterns of length four. In particular, we show that the distribution is the same for each class and is given by the entries of a new Schröder number triangle. This answers in the affirmative a recent conjecture of Lin and Kim. We employ a variety of techniques to prove our results, including generating trees, direct bijections and the kernel method. For the latter, we make use of in a creative way what we are trying to show in three cases to aid in solving a system of functional equations satisfied by the associated generating functions.

Hankel determinants of linear combinations of moments of orthogonal polynomials, II
Published in Ramanujan J. 61 (2023), 597-627 • View PublicationBIB
We present a formula that expresses the Hankel determinants of a linear combination of length $d+1$ of moments of orthogonal polynomials in terms of a $d\times d$ determinant of the orthogonal polynomials. This formula exists somehow hidden in the folklore of the theory of orthogonal polynomials but deserves to be better known, and be presented correctly and with full proof. We present four fundamentally different proofs, one that uses classical formulae from the theory of orthogonal polynomials, one that uses a vanishing argument and is due to Elouafi [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 431} (2015), 1253-1274] (but given in an incomplete form there), one that is inspired by random matrix theory and is due to Brézin and Hikami [Comm. Math. Phys. 214 (2000), 111-135], and one that uses (Dodgson) condensation. We give two applications of the formula. In the first application, we explain how to compute such Hankel determinants in a singular case. The second application concerns the linear recurrence of such Hankel determinants for a certain class of moments that covers numerous classical combinatorial sequences, including Catalan numbers, Motzkin numbers, central binomial coefficients, central trinomial coefficients, central Delannoy numbers, Schröder numbers, Riordan numbers, and Fine numbers.

Unknotted cycles

Noting that cycle diagrams of permutations visually resemble grid diagrams used to depict knots and links in topology, we consider the knot (or link) obtained from the cycle diagram of a permutation. We show that the permutations which correspond in this way to an unknot are enumerated by the Schröder numbers, and also enumerate the permutations corresponding to an unlink. The proof uses Bennequin's inequality.

Bimonotone Subdivisions of Point Configurations in the Plane
Published in Alg. Stat. 12 (2021) 125-138 • View PublicationBIB
Bimonotone subdivisions in two dimensions are subdivisions all of whose sides are either vertical or have nonnegative slope. They correspond to statistical estimates of probability distributions of strongly positively dependent random variables. The number of bimonotone subdivisions compared to the total number of subdivisions of a point configuration provides insight into how often the random variables are positively dependent. We give recursions as well as formulas for the numbers of bimonotone and total subdivisions of $2\times n$ grid configurations in the plane. Furthermore, we connect the former to the large Schröder numbers. We also show that the numbers of bimonotone and total subdivisions of a $2\times n$ grid are asymptotically equal. We then provide algorithms for counting bimonotone subdivisions for any $m \times n$ grid. Finally, we prove that all bimonotone triangulations of an $m \times n$ grid are connected by flips. This gives rise to an algorithm for counting the number of bimonotone (and total) triangulations of an $m\times n$ grid.

Schroder combinatorics and $ν$-associahedra
We study $ν$-Schröder paths, which are Schröder paths which stay weakly above a given lattice path $ν$. Some classical bijective and enumerative results are extended to the $ν$-setting, including the relationship between small and large Schröder paths. We introduce two posets of $ν$-Schröder objects, namely $ν$-Schröder paths and trees, and show that they are isomorphic to the face poset of the $ν$-associahedron $A_ν$ introduced by Ceballos, Padrol and Sarmiento. A consequence of our results is that the $i$-dimensional faces of $A_ν$ are indexed by $ν$-Schröder paths with $i$ diagonal steps, and we obtain a closed-form expression for these Schröder numbers in the special case when $ν$ is a `rational' lattice path. Using our new description of the face poset of $A_ν$, we apply discrete Morse theory to show that $A_ν$ is contractible. This yields one of two proofs presented for the fact that the Euler characteristic of $A_ν$ is one. A second proof of this is obtained via a formula for the $ν$-Narayana polynomial in terms of $ν$-Schröder numbers.

Catalan and Schröder permutations sortable by two restricted stacks
Published • View PublicationBIB
Pattern avoiding machines were introduced recently by Claesson, Cerbai and Ferrari as a particular case of the two-stacks in series sorting device. They consist of two restricted stacks in series, ruled by a right-greedy procedure and the stacks avoid some specified patterns. Some of the obtained results have been further generalized to Cayley permutations by Cerbai, specialized to particular patterns by Defant and Zheng, or considered in the context of functions over the symmetric group by Berlow. In this work we study pattern avoiding machines where the first stack avoids a pair of patterns of length 3 and investigate those pairs for which sortable permutations are counted by the (binomial transform of the) Catalan numbers and the Schröder numbers.

Some Properties and Combinatorial Implications of Weighted Small Schröder Numbers
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences 24 (2021) Article 21.1.1 • Search Publication
The $n^{\text{th}}$ small Schröder number is $s(n) = \sum_{k \geq 0} s(n,k)$, where $s(n,k)$ denotes the number of plane rooted trees with $n$ leaves and $k$ internal nodes that each has at least two children. In this manuscript, we focus on the weighted small Schröder numbers $s_d(n) = \sum_{k \geq 0} s(n,k) d^k$, where $d$ is an arbitrary fixed real number. We provide recursive and asymptotic formulas for $s_d(n)$, as well as some identities and combinatorial interpretations for these numbers. We also establish connections between $s_d(n)$ and several families of Dyck paths.
