Combinatorial equivalence of separable elements in types $A$ and $B$
We study the combinatorial equivalence of separable elements in types $A$ and $B$. A bijection is constructed from the set of separable permutations in the symmetric group $S_{n+1}$ to the set of separable signed permutations in the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$. This bijection preserves descent statistics and induces a poset isomorphism under the left weak order. As a consequence, separable signed permutations are enumerated by the large Schröder numbers, and their descent polynomials are shown to be $γ$-positive. Building on a recursive characterization of separable signed permutations via direct sum and skew sum operations, we derive explicit product formulas for the rank generating functions of the principal upper and lower ideals of separable signed permutations under the left weak order.

Classification of weak Bruhat interval modules of $0$-Hecke algebras
Weak Bruhat interval modules of the $0$-Hecke algebra in type $A$ provide a uniform approach to studying modules associated with noteworthy families of quasisymmetric functions. Recently this kind of modules were generalized from type $A$ to all Coxeter types. In this paper, we give an equivalent description, in a type-independent manner, when two left weak Bruhat intervals in a Coxeter group are descent-preserving isomorphic. As an application, we classify all left weak Bruhat interval modules of $0$-Hecke algebras up to isomorphism, and thereby answer an open question and resolve in the affirmative a conjecture of Jung, Kim, Lee, and Oh. Additionally, for finite Coxeter groups we show that the set of minimum (or maximum) elements of all left weak Bruhat intervals in each descent-preserving isomorphism class forms an interval under the right weak Bruhat order.

Separable elements and splittings in Weyl groups of Type $B$
Separable elements in Weyl groups are generalizations of the well-known class of separable permutations in symmetric groups. Gaetz and Gao showed that for any pair $(X,Y)$ of subsets of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$, the multiplication map $X\times Y\rightarrow \mathfrak{S}_n$ is a splitting (i.e., a length-additive bijection) of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ if and only if $X$ is the generalized quotient of $Y$ and $Y$ is a principal lower order ideal in the right weak order generated by a separable element. They conjectured this result can be extended to all finite Weyl groups. In this paper, we classify all separable and minimal non-separable signed permutations in terms of forbidden patterns and confirm the conjecture of Gaetz and Gao for Weyl groups of type $B$.

Sign-twisted generating functions of the odd length for Weyl groups of type $D$
The odd length in Weyl groups is a new statistic analogous to the classical Coxeter length, and features combinatorial and parity conditions. We establish explicit closed product formulas for the sign-twisted generating functions of the odd length for parabolic quotients of Weyl groups of type $D$. As a consequence, we verify three conjectures of Brenti and Carnevale on evaluating closed forms for these generating functions. We then give an equivalent condition for the sign-twisted generating functions to be expressible as products of cyclotomic polynomials, settling a conjecture of Stembridge.

On the cancellation-free antipode formula for the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf Algebra
Published in European J. Combin.113 (2023) 103745 • View PublicationBIB
For the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations, we provide a cancellation-free antipode formula for any permutation of the form $ab1\cdots(b-1)(b+1)\cdots(a-1)(a+1)\cdots n$, which starts with the decreasing sequence $ab$ and ends with the increasing sequence $1\cdots(b-1)(b+1)\cdots(a-1)(a+1)\cdots n$, where $1\leq b<a\leq n$. As a consequence, we confirm two conjectures posed by Carolina Benedetti and Bruce E. Sagan.

The coincidence of the Bruhat order and the secondary Bruhat order on $\mathcal{A}(n,k)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a positive integer $n$ and a nonnegative integer $k$ with $k\leq n$, we denote by $\mathcal{A}(n,k)$ the class of all $n$-by-$n$ $(0,1)$-matrices with constant row and column sums $k$. In this paper, we show that the Bruhat order and the secondary Bruhat order coincide on $\mathcal{A}(n,k)$ if and only if either $0\leq n\leq 5$ or $k\in\{0,1,2,n-2,n-1,n\}$ with $n\geq 6$.

The weak order on the hyperoctahedral group and the monomial basis for the Hopf algebra of signed permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a combinatorial description for the weak order on the hyperoctahedral group. This characterization is then used to analyze the order-theoretic properties of the shifted products of hyperoctahedral groups. It is shown that each shifted product is a disjoint union of some intervals, which can be convex embedded into a hyperoctahedral group. As an application, we investigate the monomial basis for the Hopf algebra $\mathfrak{H}Sym$ of signed permutations, related to the fundamental basis via Möbius inversion on the weak order on hyperoctahedral groups. It turns out that the image of a monomial basis element under the descent map from $\mathfrak{H}Sym$ to the algebra of type $B$ quasi-symmetric functions is either zero or a monomial quasi-symmetric function of type $B$.

Renormalization of quasisymmetric functions
As a natural basis of the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, monomial quasisymmetric functions are formal power series defined from compositions. The same definition applies to left weak compositions, while leads to divergence for other weak compositions. We adapt the method of renormalization in quantum field theory, in the framework of Connes and Kreimer, to deal with such divergency. This approach defines monomial quasisymmetric functions for any weak composition as power series while extending the quasi-shuffle (stuffle) relation satisfied by the usual quasisymmetric functions. The algebra of renormalized quasisymmetric functions thus obtained turns out to be isomorphic to the quasi-shuffle algebra of weak compositions, giving the former a natural Hopf algebra structure and the latter a power series realization. This isomorphism also gives the free commutative Rota-Baxter algebra a power series realization, in support of a suggestion of Rota that Rota-Baxter algebra should provide a broad context for generalizations of symmetric functions.

The Hopf algebras of signed permutations, of weak quasi-symmetric functions and of Malvenuto-Reutenauer
Published in Advances in Math, vol 374, (2020) 107341 • View PublicationBIB
This paper builds on two covering Hopf algebras of the Hopf algebra QSym of quasi-symmetric functions, with linear bases parameterized by compositions. One is the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra SSym of permutations, mapped onto QSym by taking descents of permutations. The other one is the recently introduced Hopf algebra RQSym of weak quasi-symmetric functions, mapped onto QSym by extracting compositions from weak compositions. We extend these two surjective Hopf algebra homomorphisms into a commutative diagram by introducing a Hopf algebra HSym, linearly spanned by signed permutations from the hyperoctahedral groups, equipped with the shifted quasi-shuffle product and deconcatenation coproduct. Extracting a permutation from a signed permutation defines a Hopf algebra surjection form HSym to SSym and taking a suitable descent from a signed permutation defines a linear surjection from HSym to RQSym. The notion of signed $P$-partitions from signed permutations is introduced which, by taking generating functions, gives fundamental weak quasi-symmetric functions and sends the shifted quasi-shuffle product to the product of the corresponding generating functions. Together with the existing Hopf algebra surjections from SSym and RQSym to QSym, we obtain a commutative diagram of Hopf algebras revealing the close relationship among compositions, weak compositions, permutations and signed permutations.

Rigidity for the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the rigidity for the Hopf algebra ${\rm QSym}$ of quasisymmetric functions with respect to the monomial, the fundamental and the quasisymmetric Schur basis, respectively. By establishing some combinatorial properties of the posets of compositions arising from the analogous Pieri rules for quasisymmetric functions, we show that ${\rm QSym}$ is rigid as an algebra with respect to the quasisymmetric Schur basis, and rigid as a coalgebra with respect to the monomial and the quasisymmetric Schur basis, respectively. The natural actions of reversal, complement and transpose of the labelling compositions lead to some nontrivial graded (co)algebra automorphisms of ${\rm QSym}$. We prove that the linear maps induced by the three actions are precisely the only nontrivial graded algebra automorphisms that take the fundamental basis into itself. Furthermore, the complement map on the labels gives the unique nontrivial graded coalgebra automorphism preserving the fundamental basis, while the reversal map on the labels gives the unique nontrivial graded algebra automorphism preserving the monomial basis. Therefore, ${\rm QSym}$ is rigid as a Hopf algebra with respect to the monomial and the quasisymmetric Schur basis.

Weak composition quasi-symmetric functions, Rota-Baxter algebras and Hopf algebras
Published in Adv Math. 344 (2019), 1-34 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions with semigroup exponents generalizing the Hopf algebra QSym of quasi-symmetric functions. As a special case we obtain the Hopf algebra WCQSym of weak composition quasi-symmetric functions, which provides a framework for the study of a question proposed by G.-C.~Rota relating symmetric type functions and Rota-Baxter algebras. We provide the transformation formulas between the weak composition monomial and fundamental quasi-symmetric functions, which extends the corresponding results for quasi-symmetric functions. Moreover, we show that QSym is a Hopf subalgebra and a Hopf quotient algebra of WCQSym. Rota's question is addressed by identifying WCQsym with the free commutative unitary Rota-Baxter algebra of weight 1 on one generator, which also allows us to equip this algebra with a Hopf algebra structure.

Rota--Baxter algebras and left weak composition quasi-symmetric functions
Published in Ramanujan Journal 44 (2017), 567-596 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by a question of Rota, this paper studies the relationship between Rota--Baxter algebras and symmetric related functions. The starting point is the fact that the space of quasi-symmetric functions is spanned by monomial quasi-symmetric functions which are indexed by compositions. When composition is replaced by left weak composition (LWC), we obtain the concept of LWC monomial quasi-symmetric functions and the resulting space of LWC quasi-symmetric functions. In line with the question of Rota, the latter is shown to be isomorphic to the free commutative nonunitary Rota--Baxter algebra on one generator. The combinatorial interpretation of quasi-symmetric functions by $P$-partitions from compositions is extended to the context of left weak compositions, leading to the concept of LWC fundamental quasi-symmetric functions. The transformation formulas for LWC monomial and LWC fundamental quasi-symmetric functions are obtained, generalizing the corresponding results for quasi-symmetric functions. Extending the close relationship between quasi-symmetric functions and multiple zeta values, weighted multiple zeta values and a $q$-analog of multiple zeta values are investigated and a decomposition formula is established.

On realizing zero-divisor graphs of po-semirings
In this paper, we determine bipartite graphs and complete graphs with horns, which are realizable as zero-divisor graphs of po-semirings. As applications, we classify commutative rings $R$ whose annihilating-ideal graph $\mathbb {AG}(R)$ are either bipartite graphs or complete graphs with horns.

On graphs related to co-maximal ideals of a commutative ring
Published in ISRN Combinatorics Vol. 2013, Article ID 354696, 7 pages • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies the co-maximal graph $\Om(R)$, the induced subgraph $\G(R)$ of $\Om(R)$ whose vertex set is $R\setminus (U(R)\cup J(R))$ and a retract $\G_r(R)$ of $\G(R)$, where $R$ is a commutative ring. We show that the core of $\G(R)$ is a union of triangles and rectangles, while a vertex in $\G(R)$ is either an end vertex or a vertex in the core. For a non-local ring $R$, we prove that both the chromatic number and clique number of $\G(R)$ are identical with the number of maximal ideals of $R$. A graph $\G_r(R)$ is also introduced on the vertex set $\{Rx|\,x\in R\setminus (U(R)\cup J(R))\}$, and graph properties of $\G_r(R)$ are studied.
