Generalised flip order on the faces of nestohedra
Classical shuffle products on permutations and binary planar rooted trees (i.e., on the vertices of permutohedra and associahedra) admit descriptions in terms of intervals in the weak Bruhat order and the Tamari order, respectively. Palacios and Ronco extended these products as well as their interval description to surjections and planar rooted trees (i.e. on all faces of permutohedra and associahedra). In this article, we present a broad generalisation of this phenomenon. We show that the shuffle product on faces of certain families of nestohedra admits an interval description with respect to the generalised flip order, a partial order defined on the faces of nestohedra through elementary splitting and fusion operations on the tree-like combinatorial objects encoding them. The generalised flip order extends the flip order of Barnard and McConville from vertices to all faces of nesthedra. We further compare it with the facial weak order of Dermenjian-Hohlweg-Pilaud and the generalised Tamari order of Ronco, and we provide its characterisation in terms of (generalised) inversions.
The Syntax Of Polytopal Projections: From Permutohedra To Associahedra
Tonks' projection from the permutohedron to the associahedron and the Loday--Ronco map both send permutations to planar binary trees. We give a syntactic account of these maps in the equational calculus of the free non-symmetric, non-unital operad on one binary generator. The vertex restriction of Tonks' projection is obtained by evaluating the head-insertion encoding on the reversed permutation, while the Loday--Ronco map is obtained by evaluating the decreasing encoding. We also give a local operadic proof that Tonks' vertex map is order-preserving from the weak Bruhat order to the Tamari order.
Poset modules of the $0$-Hecke algebras of type $B$
In 2001, Chow developed the theory of the $B_n$ posets $P$ and the type $B$ $P$-partition enumerators $K^B_P$. To provide a representation-theoretic interpretation of $K^B_P$, we define the poset modules $M^B_P$ of the 0-Hecke algebra $H_n^B(0)$ of type $B$ by endowing the set of type-$B$ linear extensions of $P$ with an $H_n^B(0)$-action. We then show that the Grothendieck group of the category associated to type-$B$ poset modules is isomorphic to the space of type $B$ quasisymmetric functions as both a $\mathrm{QSym}$-module and comodule, where $\mathrm{QSym}$ denotes the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions. Considering an equivalence relation on $B_n$ posets, where two posets are equivalent if they share the same set of type-$B$ linear extensions, we identify a natural representative of each equivalence class, which we call a distinguished poset. We further characterize the distinguished posets whose sets of type-$B$ linear extensions form intervals in the right weak Bruhat order on the the hyperoctahedral groups. Finally, we discuss the relationship among the categories associated to type-$B$ weak Bruhat interval modules, $B_n$ poset modules, and finite-dimensional $H_n^B(0)$-modules.
Comparability in Bruhat orders
We determine the sharp asymptotic scale of the probability that two uniformly random permutations are comparable in weak Bruhat order, showing that $\mathbb{P}(σ_1 \preceq_W σ_2)=\exp\Bigl(\bigl(-\tfrac12+o(1)\bigr)\,n\log n\Bigr)$. This significantly improves both of the best known bounds, due to Hammett and Pittel, which placed this probability between $\exp((-1+o(1))n\log n)$ and $\exp(-Θ(n))$. We also improve the best known lower bound for strong Bruhat-order comparability, due to the same authors, by proving a subexponential lower bound. The Bruhat orders are natural partial orders on the symmetric group, appearing in wide-reaching settings including the geometry of flag manifolds, the representation theory of $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$, and the combinatorics of the permutohedron. To analyze weak Bruhat order, we combine classic analytic, tableau-theoretic, and poset-theoretic tools, including the Plancherel measure and the RSK bijection. For strong Bruhat order we construct large families where members are comparable with high probability. Our proof that members are comparable combines the tableau criterion with an associated random-walk-type deviation process.
The poset of maximal tubings of the cycle graph is a lattice
The poset of maximal tubings of a graph generalizes several well-known and remarkable partial orders. Notable examples include the weak Bruhat order and the Tamari lattice, posets of maximal tubings for the complete graph and the path graph, respectively. It is an open problem to characterize graphs for which the poset of maximal tubings is a lattice. In this paper, we prove that the poset of maximal tubings for the cycle graph is a lattice, and moreover that it is semidistributive and congruence uniform. As main tools, we characterize all order relations in the poset, and introduce a useful map from maximal tubings of the cycle graph to maximal tubings of the path graph.
Algebra and geometry of ASM weak order
Much of modern Schubert calculus is centered on Schubert varieties in the complete flag variety and on their classes in its integral cohomology ring. Under the Borel isomorphism, these classes are represented by distinguished polynomials called Schubert polynomials, introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger.
Knutson and Miller showed that Schubert polynomials are multidegrees of matrix Schubert varieties, affine varieties introduced by Fulton, which are closely related to Schubert varieties. Many roads to studying Schubert polynomials pass through unions and intersections of matrix Schubert varieties. The third author showed that the natural indexing objects of arbitrary intersections of matrix Schubert varieties are alternating sign matrices (ASMs). Every ASM variety is expressible as a union of matrix Schubert varieties.
Many fundamental algebro-geometric invariants (e.g., codimension, degree, and Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity) are well understood combinatorially for matrix Schubert varieties, substantially via the combinatorics of strong Bruhat order on $S_n$. The extension of strong order to ASM(n), the set of $n \times n$ ASMs, has so far not borne as much algebro-geometric fruit for ASM varieties.
Hamaker and Reiner proposed an extension of weak Bruhat order from $S_n$ to ASM(n), which they studied from a combinatorial perspective. In the present paper, we place this work on algebro-geometric footing. We use weak order on ASMs to give a characterization of codimension of ASM varieties. We also show that weak order operators commute with K-theoretic divided difference operators and that they satisfy the same derivative formula that facilitated the first general combinatorial computation of Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of matrix Schubert varieties. Finally, we build from these results to generalizations that apply to arbitrary unions of matrix Schubert varieties.
The support of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is an order ideal in the weak Bruhat order
For integral weights $λ$ and $μ$ of a classical simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, Kostant's weight multiplicity formula gives the multiplicity of the weight $μ$ in the irreducible representation with highest weight $λ$, which we denote by $m(λ,μ)$. Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over the Weyl group of the Lie algebra whose terms are determined via a vector partition function. The Weyl alternation set $\mathcal{A}(λ,μ)$ is the set of elements of the Weyl group that contribute nontrivially to the multiplicity $m(λ,μ)$. In this article, we prove that Weyl alternation sets are order ideals in the weak Bruhat order of the corresponding Weyl group. Specializing to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$, we give a complete characterization of the Weyl alternation sets $\mathcal{A}(\tildeα,μ)$, where $\tildeα$ is the highest root and $μ$ is a negative root, answering a question of Harry posed in 2024. We also provide some enumerative results that pave the way for our future work, where we aim to prove Harry's conjecture that the $q$-analog of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is $m_q(\tildeα,μ)=q^{r+j-i+1}+q^{r+j-i}-q^{j-i+1}$ when $μ=-(α_i+α_{i+1}+\cdots+α_{j})$ is a negative root of $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$.
Classification of weak Bruhat interval modules of $0$-Hecke algebras
Weak Bruhat interval modules of the $0$-Hecke algebra in type $A$ provide a uniform approach to studying modules associated with noteworthy families of quasisymmetric functions. Recently this kind of modules were generalized from type $A$ to all Coxeter types. In this paper, we give an equivalent description, in a type-independent manner, when two left weak Bruhat intervals in a Coxeter group are descent-preserving isomorphic. As an application, we classify all left weak Bruhat interval modules of $0$-Hecke algebras up to isomorphism, and thereby answer an open question and resolve in the affirmative a conjecture of Jung, Kim, Lee, and Oh. Additionally, for finite Coxeter groups we show that the set of minimum (or maximum) elements of all left weak Bruhat intervals in each descent-preserving isomorphism class forms an interval under the right weak Bruhat order.

Rectangulations are decompositions of a square into finitely many axis-aligned rectangles. We describe realizations of $(n-1)$-dimensional polytopes associated with two combinatorial families of rectangulations composed of $n$ rectangles. They are defined as quotientopes of natural lattice congruences on the weak Bruhat order on permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$, and their skeleta are flip graphs on rectangulations. We give simple vertex and facet descriptions of these polytopes, in particular elementary formulas for computing the coordinates of the vertex corresponding to each rectangulation, in the spirit of J.-L. Loday's realization of the associahedron.
Boolean intervals in the weak Bruhat order of a finite Coxeter group
Given a Coxeter group $W$ with Coxeter system $(W,S)$, where $S$ is finite. We provide a complete characterization of Boolean intervals in the weak order of $W$ uniformly for all Coxeter groups in terms of independent sets of the Coxeter graph. Moreover, we establish that the number of Boolean intervals of rank $k$ in the weak order of $W$ is ${i_k(Γ_W)\cdot|W|}\,/\,2^{k}$, where $Γ_W$ is the Coxeter graph of $W$ and $i_k(Γ_W)$ is the number of independent sets of size $k$ of $Γ_W$ when $W$ is finite. Specializing to $A_n$, we recover the characterizations and enumerations of Boolean intervals in the weak order of $A_n$ given in arXiv:2306.14734. We provide the analogous results for types $C_n$ and $D_n$, including the related generating functions and additional connections to well-known integer sequences.

A barcode is a finite multiset of intervals on the real line. Jaramillo-Rodriguez (2023) previously defined a map from the space of barcodes with a fixed number of bars to a set of multipermutations, which presented new combinatorial invariants on the space of barcodes. A partial order can be defined on these multipermutations, resulting in a class of posets known as combinatorial barcode lattices. In this paper, we provide a number of equivalent definitions for the combinatorial barcode lattice, show that its Möbius function is a restriction of the Möbius function of the symmetric group under the weak Bruhat order, and show its ground set is the Jordan-Hölder set of a labeled poset. Furthermore, we obtain formulas for the number of join-irreducible elements, the rank-generating function, and the number of maximal chains of combinatorial barcode lattices. Lastly, we make connections between intervals in the combinatorial barcode lattice and certain classes of matchings.
On Manin-Schechtman orders related to directed graphs
As a generalization of weak Bruhat orders on permutations, in 1989 Manin and Schechtman introduced the notion of a higher Bruhat order on the $d$-element subsets of a set $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Among other results in this field, they proved that the set of such orders for $n,d$ fixed, endowed with natural local transformations, constitutes a poset with one minimal and one maximal elements. In this paper we consider a wider model, involving the so-called convex order on certain path systems in an acyclic directed graph, introduce local transformations, or flips, on such orders and prove that the resulting structure gives a poset with one minimal and one maximal elements as well, yielding a generalization of the above-mentioned classical result.
An inverse Grassmannian Littlewood-Richardson rule and extensions

Chow rings of flag varieties have bases of Schubert cycles $σ_u$, indexed by permutations. A major problem of algebraic combinatorics is to give a positive combinatorial formula for the structure constants of this basis. The celebrated Littlewood-Richardson rules solve this problem for special products $σ_u \cdot σ_v$ where $u$ and $v$ are $p$-Grassmannian permutations.
Building on work of Wyser, we introduce backstable clans to prove such a rule for the problem of computing the product $σ_u \cdot σ_v$ when $u$ is $p$-inverse Grassmannian and $v$ is $q$-inverse Grassmannian. By establishing several new families of linear relations among structure constants, we further extend this result to obtain a positive combinatorial rule for $σ_u \cdot σ_v$ in the case that $u$ is covered in weak Bruhat order by a $p$-inverse Grassmannian permutation and $v$ is a $q$-inverse Grassmannian permutation.

A Coxeter group is said to be \emph{$\mathbf{a}(2)$-finite} if it has finitely many elements of $\mathbf{a}$-value 2 in the sense of Lusztig. In this paper, we give explicit combinatorial descriptions of the left, right, and two-sided Kazhdan--Lusztig cells of $\mathbf{a}$-value 2 in an irreducible $\mathbf{a}(2)$-finite Coxeter group. In particular, we introduce elements we call \emph{stubs} to parameterize the one-sided cells and we characterize the one-sided cells via both star operations and weak Bruhat orders. We also compute the cardinalities of all the one-sided and two-sided cells.
Matrix coefficients of intertwining operators and the Bruhat order
Let $(π_{\mathbf{z}},V_{\mathbf{z}})$ be an unramified principal series representation of a reductive group over a nonarchimedean local field, parametrized by an element $\mathbf{z}$ of the maximal torus in the Langlands dual group. If $v$ is an element of the Weyl group $W$, then the standard intertwining integral $\mathcal{A}_v$ maps $V_{\mathbf{z}}$ to $V_{v\mathbf{z}}$. Letting $ψ^{\mathbf{z}}_w$ with $w\in W$ be a suitable basis of the Iwahori fixed vectors in $V_{\mathbf{z}}$, and $\widehatψ^{\mathbf{z}}_w$ a basis of the contragredient representation, we define $σ(u,v,w)$ (for $u,v,w\in W$) to be $\langle \mathcal{A}_vψ_u^{\mathbf{z}},\widehatψ^{v\mathbf{z}}_w\rangle$. This is an interesting function and we initiate its study. We show that given $u$ and $w$, there is a minimal $v$ such that $σ(u,v,w)\neq 0$. Denoting this $v$ as $v_\hbox{min}=v_\hbox{min}(u,w)$, we will prove that $σ(u,v_\hbox{min},w)$ is a polynomial of the cardinality $q$ of the residue field. Indeed if $v>v_\hbox{min}$, then $σ(u,v,w)$ is a rational function of $\mathbf{z}$ and $q$, whose denominator we describe. But if $v=v_\hbox{min}$, the dependence on $\mathbf{z}$ disappears. We will express $σ(u,v_\hbox{min},w)$ as the Poincaré polynomial of a Bruhat interval. The proof leads to fairly intricate considerations of the Bruhat order.
Thus our results require us to prove some facts that may be of independent interest, relating the Bruhat order $\leqslant$ and the weak Bruhat order $\leqslant_R$. For example we will prove (for finite Coxeter groups) the following "mixed meet" property. If $u, w$ are elements of $W$, then there exists a unique element $m \in W$ that is maximal with respect to the condition that $m \leqslant_R u$ and $m \leqslant w$. Thus if $z \leqslant_R u$ and $z \leqslant w$, then $x \leqslant m$. The value $v_\hbox{min}$ is $m^{-1}u$.

We introduce $δ$-cliffs, a generalization of permutations and increasing trees depending on a range map $δ$. We define a first lattice structure on these objects and we establish general results about its subposets. Among them, we describe sufficient conditions to have EL-shellable posets, lattices with algorithms to compute the meet and the join of two elements, and lattices constructible by interval doubling. Some of these subposets admit natural geometric realizations. Then, we introduce three families of subposets which, for some maps $δ$, have underlying sets enumerated by the Fuss-Catalan numbers. Among these, one is a generalization of Stanley lattices and another one is a generalization of Tamari lattices. These three families of posets fit into a chain for the order extension relation and they share some properties. Finally, in the same way as the product of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra forms intervals of the right weak Bruhat order of permutations, we construct algebras whose products form intervals of the lattices of $δ$-cliff. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions on $δ$ to have associative, finitely presented, or free algebras. We end this work by using the previous Fuss-Catalan posets to define quotients of our algebras of $δ$-cliffs. In particular, one is a generalization of the Loday-Ronco algebra.
Inversion arrangements and the weak Bruhat order
For each permutation $w$, we can construct a collection of hyperplanes $\mathcal{A}_w$ according to the inversions of $w$, which is called the inversion hyperplane arrangement associated to $w$. It was conjectured by Postnikov and confirmed by Hultman, Linusson, Shareshian and Sjöstrand that the number of regions of $\mathcal{A}_w$ is less than or equal to the number of permutations below $w$ in the Bruhat order, with the equality holds if and only if $w$ avoids the four patterns 4231, 35142, 42513 and 351624. In this paper, we show that the number of regions of $\mathcal{A}_w$ is greater than or equal to the number of permutations below $w$ in the weak Bruhat order, with the equality holds if and only if $w$ avoids the patterns 231 and 312.
On the distribution of the major index on standard Young tableaux
The study of permutation and partition statistics is a classical topic in enumerative combinatorics. The major index statistic on permutations was introduced a century ago by Percy MacMahon in his seminal works. In this extended abstract, we study the well-known generalization of the major index to standard Young tableaux. We present several new results. In one direction, we introduce and study two partial orders on the standard Young tableaux of a given partition shape, in analogy with the strong and weak Bruhat orders on permutations. The existence of such ranked poset structures allows us to classify the realizable major index statistics on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes, and has representation-theoretic consequences, both for the symmetric group and for Shephard-Todd groups. In a different direction, we consider the distribution of the major index on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes. We classify all possible limit laws for any sequence of such shapes in terms of a simple auxiliary statistic, "aft," generalizing earlier results of Canfield-Janson-Zeilberger, Chen-Wang-Wang, and others. We also study unimodality, log-concavity, and local limit properties.
Correlation for permutations

In this note we investigate correlation inequalities for `up-sets' of permutations, in the spirit of the Harris--Kleitman inequality. We focus on two well-studied partial orders on $S_n$, giving rise to differing notions of up-sets. Our first result shows that, under the strong Bruhat order on $S_n$, up-sets are positively correlated (in the Harris--Kleitman sense). Thus, for example, for a (uniformly) random permutation $π$, the event that no point is displaced by more than a fixed distance $d$ and the event that $π$ is the product of at most $k$ adjacent transpositions are positively correlated. In contrast, under the weak Bruhat order we show that this completely fails: surprisingly, there are two up-sets each of measure $1/2$ whose intersection has arbitrarily small measure.
We also prove analogous correlation results for a class of non-uniform measures, which includes the Mallows measures. Some applications and open problems are discussed.

We define the notion of a separable element in a finite Weyl group, generalizing the well-studied class of separable permutations. We prove that the upper and lower order ideals in weak Bruhat order generated by a separable element are rank-symmetric and rank-unimodal, and that the product of their rank generating functions gives that of the whole group, answering an open problem of Fan Wei. We also prove that separable elements are characterized by pattern avoidance in the sense of Billey and Postnikov.
