Comparability in Bruhat orders
We determine the sharp asymptotic scale of the probability that two uniformly random permutations are comparable in weak Bruhat order, showing that $\mathbb{P}(σ_1 \preceq_W σ_2)=\exp\Bigl(\bigl(-\tfrac12+o(1)\bigr)\,n\log n\Bigr)$. This significantly improves both of the best known bounds, due to Hammett and Pittel, which placed this probability between $\exp((-1+o(1))n\log n)$ and $\exp(-Θ(n))$. We also improve the best known lower bound for strong Bruhat-order comparability, due to the same authors, by proving a subexponential lower bound. The Bruhat orders are natural partial orders on the symmetric group, appearing in wide-reaching settings including the geometry of flag manifolds, the representation theory of $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$, and the combinatorics of the permutohedron. To analyze weak Bruhat order, we combine classic analytic, tableau-theoretic, and poset-theoretic tools, including the Plancherel measure and the RSK bijection. For strong Bruhat order we construct large families where members are comparable with high probability. Our proof that members are comparable combines the tableau criterion with an associated random-walk-type deviation process.
Combinatorics of generalized parking-function polytopes
For $\mathbf{b}=(b_1,\dots,b_n)\in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}^n$, a $\mathbf{b}$-parking function is defined to be a sequence $(β_1,\dots,β_n)$ of positive integers whose nondecreasing rearrangement $β'_1\leq β'_2\leq \cdots \leq β'_n$ satisfies $β'_i\leq b_1+\cdots + b_i$. The $\mathbf{b}$-parking-function polytope $\mathfrak{X}_n(\mathbf{b})$ is the convex hull of all $\mathbf{b}$-parking functions of length $n$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Geometric properties of $\mathfrak{X}_n(\mathbf{b})$ were previously explored in the specific case where $\mathbf{b}=(a,b,b,\dots,b)$ and were shown to generalize those of the classical parking-function polytope. In this work, we study $\mathfrak{X}_n(\mathbf{b})$ in full generality. We present a minimal inequality and vertex description for $\mathfrak{X}_n(\mathbf{b})$, prove it is a generalized permutahedron, and study its $h$-polynomial. Furthermore, we investigate $\mathfrak{X}_n(\mathbf{b})$ through the perspectives of building sets and polymatroids, allowing us to identify its combinatorial types and obtain bounds on its combinatorial and circuit diameters.
Lattice polytopes from Schur and symmetric Grothendieck polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a family of lattice polytopes, two common questions in Ehrhart Theory are determining when a polytope has the integer decomposition property and determining when a polytope is reflexive. While these properties are of independent interest, the confluence of these properties is a source of active investigation due to conjectures regarding the unimodality of the $h^\ast$-polynomial. In this paper, we consider the Newton polytopes arising from two families of polynomials in algebraic combinatorics: Schur polynomials and inflated symmetric Grothendieck polynomials. In both cases, we prove that these polytopes have the integer decomposition property by using the fact that both families of polynomials have saturated Newton polytope. Furthermore, in both cases, we provide a complete characterization of when these polytopes are reflexive. We conclude with some explicit formulas and unimodality implications of the $h^\ast$-vector in the case of Schur polynomials.
