Self-Reachable Configuration Polytopes for Trees
We study lattice polytopes which arise as the convex hull of chip vectors for \textit{self-reachable} chip configurations on a tree $T$. We show that these polytopes always have the integer decomposition property and characterize the vertex sets of these polytopes. Additionally, in the case of self-reachable configurations with the smallest possible number of chips, we show that these polytopes are unimodularly equivalent to a unit cube.

Self-Reachable Chip Configurations on Trees
In this paper, we explore the notion of a \emph{self-reachable} chip configuration on a simple graph, that is a chip configuration which can be re-obtained from itself after a (nonempty) sequence of vertex firings. In particular, we focus on the case of trees and provide a characterization for such configurations, as well as show that all self-reachable configurations with the same number of chips on a tree are reachable from one another. We conclude with a recursive enumeration formula for the number of self-reachable configurations.

Ehrhart Limits
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the definition of an Ehrhart limit, that is, a formal power series with integer coefficients that is the limit in the ring of formal power series of a sequence of Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials. We identify a variety of examples of sequences of polytopes that yield Ehrhart limits, with a focus on reflexive polytopes and simplices.
Lattice polytopes from Schur and symmetric Grothendieck polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a family of lattice polytopes, two common questions in Ehrhart Theory are determining when a polytope has the integer decomposition property and determining when a polytope is reflexive. While these properties are of independent interest, the confluence of these properties is a source of active investigation due to conjectures regarding the unimodality of the $h^\ast$-polynomial. In this paper, we consider the Newton polytopes arising from two families of polynomials in algebraic combinatorics: Schur polynomials and inflated symmetric Grothendieck polynomials. In both cases, we prove that these polytopes have the integer decomposition property by using the fact that both families of polynomials have saturated Newton polytope. Furthermore, in both cases, we provide a complete characterization of when these polytopes are reflexive. We conclude with some explicit formulas and unimodality implications of the $h^\ast$-vector in the case of Schur polynomials.

Multivariate polynomials for generalized permutohedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using the notion of Mahonian statistic on acyclic posets, we introduce a $q$-analogue of the $h$-polynomial of a simple generalized permutohedron. We focus primarily on the case of nestohedra and on explicit computations for many interesting examples, such as $S_n$-invariant nestohedra, graph associahedra, and Stanley--Pitman polytopes. For the usual (Stasheff) associahedron, our generalization yields an alternative $q$-analogue to the well-studied Narayana numbers.

Unconditional reflexive polytopes
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 64 (2020), no. 2, 427-452 • Search Publication
A convex body is unconditional if it is symmetric with respect to reflections in all coordinate hyperplanes. In this paper, we investigate unconditional lattice polytopes with respect to geometric, combinatorial, and algebraic properties. In particular, we characterize unconditional reflexive polytopes in terms of perfect graphs. As a prime example, we study the signed Birkhoff polytope. Moreover, we derive constructions for Gale-dual pairs of polytopes and we explicitly describe Gröbner bases for unconditional reflexive polytopes coming from partially ordered sets

Birkhoff polytopes of different type and the orthant-lattice property
The Birkhoff polytope, defined to be the convex hull of $n\times n$ permutation matrices, is a well studied polytope in the context of the Ehrhart theory. This polytope is known to have many desirable properties, such as the Gorenstein property and existence of regular, unimodular triangulations. In this paper, we study analogues of the Birkhoff polytope for finite irreducible Coxeter groups of other types. We focus on a type-$B$ Birkhoff polytope $\mathcal{BB}(n)$ arising from signed permutation matrices and prove that it and its dual polytope are reflexive, and hence Gorenstein, and also possess regular, unimodular triangulations. Noting that our triangulation proofs do not rely on the combinatorial structure of $\mathcal{BB}(n)$, we define the notion of an orthant-lattice property polytope and use this to prove more general results for the existence of regular, unimodular triangulations and unimodular covers for a significant family of reflexive polytopes. We conclude by remarking on some connections to Gale-duality, Birkhoff polytopes of other types, and possible applications of orthant-lattice property.

Polyhedral geometry for lecture hall partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lecture hall partitions are a fundamental combinatorial structure which have been studied extensively over the past two decades. These objects have produced new results, as well as reinterpretations and generalizations of classicial results, which are of interest in combinatorial number theory, enumerative combinatorics, and convex geometry. In a recent survey of Savage \cite{Savage-LHP-Survey}, a wide variety of these results are nicely presented. However, since the publication of this survey, there have been many new developments related to the polyhedral geometry and Ehrhart theory arising from lecture hall partitions. Subsequently, in this survey article, we focus exclusively on the polyhedral geometric results in the theory of lecture hall partitions in an effort to showcase these new developments. In particular, we highlight results on lecture hall cones, lecture hall simplices, and lecture hall order polytopes. We conclude with an extensive list of open problems and conjectures in this area.

Level algebras and $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a family of lattice polytopes, a common endeavor in Ehrhart theory is the classification of those polytopes in the family that are Gorenstein, or more generally level. In this article, we consider these questions for $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall polytopes, which are a family of simplices arising from $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall partitions. In particular, we provide concrete classifications for both of these properties purely in terms of $\boldsymbol{s}$-inversion sequences. Moreover, for a large subfamily of $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall polytopes, we provide a more geometric classification of the Gorenstein property in terms of its tangent cones. We then show how one can use the classification of level $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall polytopes to construct infinite families of level $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall polytopes, and to describe level $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall polytopes in small dimensions.

Hilbert Bases and Lecture Hall Partitions
Published in Ramanujan J. 47 (2018), no. 3, 509-531 • View PublicationBIB
In the interest of finding the minimum additive generating set for the set of $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall partitions, we compute the Hilbert bases for the $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall cones in certain cases. In particular, we compute the Hilbert bases for two well-studied families of sequences, namely the $1\mod k$ sequences and the $\ell$-sequences. Additionally, we provide a characterization of the Hilbert bases for $\boldsymbol{u}$-generated Gorenstein $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall cones in low dimensions.

Flag Descents and Eulerian Polynomials for Wreath Product Quotients
We investigate the $α$-colored Eulerian polynomials and a notion of descents introduced in a recent paper of Hedmark and show that such polynomials can be computed as a polynomial encoding descents computed over a quotient of the wreath product $\mathbb{Z}_α\wr\mathfrak{S}_n$. Moreover, we consider the flag descent statistic computed over this same quotient and find that the flag Eulerian polynomial remains palindromic. We prove that the flag descent polynomial is palindromic over this same quotient by giving a combinatorial proof that the flag descent statistic is symmetrically distributed over the collection of colored permutations with fixed last color by way of a new combinatorial tool, the colored winding number of a colored permutation. We conclude with some conjectures, observations, and open questions.

Gorenstein properties and integer decomposition properties of lecture hall polytopes
Published in Mosc. Math. J. 18 (2018), no. 4, 667-679 • View PublicationBIB
Though much is known about ${\bf s}$-lecture hall polytopes, there are still many unanswered questions. In this paper, we show that ${\bf s}$-lecture hall polytopes satisfy the integer decomposition property (IDP) in the case of monotonic ${\bf s}$-sequences. Given restrictions on a monotonic ${\bf s}$-sequence, we discuss necessary and sufficient conditions for the Fano, reflexive and Gorenstein properties. Additionally, we give a construction for producing Gorenstein/IDP lecture hall polytopes.

Self dual reflexive simplices with Eulerian polynomials
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics (2017) 33: 1401-1404 • View PublicationBIB
A lattice polytope $\mathcal{P}$ is called reflexive if its dual $\mathcal{P}^\vee$ is a lattice polytope. The property that $\mathcal{P}$ is unimodularly equivalent to $\mathcal{P}^\vee$ does not hold in general, and in fact there are few examples of such polytopes. In this note, we introduce a new reflexive simplex $Q_n$ which has this property. Additionally, we show that $δ$-polynomalial of $Q_n$ is the Eulerian polynomial and show the existence of a regular, flag, unimodular triangulation.

Euler-Mahonian statistics and descent bases for semigroup algebras
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 69 (2018), 237-256 • View PublicationBIB
We consider quotients of the unit cube semigroup algebra by particular $\mathbb{Z}_r\wr S_n$-invariant ideals. Using Gröbner basis methods, we show that the resulting graded quotient algebra has a basis where each element is indexed by colored permutations $(π,ε)\in\mathbb{Z}_r\wr S_n$ and each element encodes the negative descent and negative major index statistics on $(π,ε)$. This gives an algebraic interpretation of these statistics which was previously unknown. This basis of the $\mathbb{Z}_r\wr S_n$-quotients allows us to recover certain combinatorial identities involving Euler-Mahonian distributions of statistics.
