Polynomiality of Stretched Schubert Structure Constants and Key Coefficients
We prove that monomial coefficients in affine families of key and Schubert polynomials are eventually polynomial. The proof combines Demazure operators with vector partition functions and, in the Schubert case, P.~Magyar's orthodontic formula. These coefficient results extend to finite products. Using M.~Watanabe's Schubert duality, we deduce that stretched Schubert structure constants are eventually polynomial, proving a conjecture of I.~Pak and Z.~Slonim. For key polynomials, this resolves the polynomiality part of a conjecture of P.~Alexandersson and E.~Alhajjar.
Constraining Conformal Correlators
We study the space of conformally covariant $n$-point functions of spinning operators using methods from invariant theory, commutative algebra, and combinatorics. We show that the rational part of any such function can be expressed in terms of the basic building blocks introduced by Costa, Penedones, Poland, Rychkov, thereby providing a rigorous proof of a result that is widely used in the physics literature. We reformulate the problem of enumeration of $n$-point structures in terms of counting lattice points in fractional matching polytopes, and compute these counts using vector partition functions, Hilbert functions, and Kostka numbers. We show that all algebraic relations between the building blocks follow from Gram constraints and compute the number of algebraically independent building blocks. For three-point functions, we derive closed counting formulas for arbitrary integer spins, both with and without Bose symmetry, and discuss a necessary and sufficient condition for the partial conservation operator to lift to a differential operator written in terms of the building blocks. We provide code that generates a basis of three-point structures satisfying these constraints for given values of spins and scaling dimensions.

Factorization length distribution for affine semigroups V: explicit asymptotic behavior of weighted factorization lengths on numerical semigroups
We describe the asymptotic behavior of weighted factorization lengths on numerical semigroups. Our approach is geometric as opposed to analytic, explains the presence of Curry-Schoenberg B-splines as limiting distributions, and provides explicit error bounds (no implied constants left unspecified). Along the way, we explicitly bound the difference between the vector partition function and the number of integer points in the variable polytope for a $2 \times k$ matrix.
The support of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is an order ideal in the weak Bruhat order
For integral weights $λ$ and $μ$ of a classical simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, Kostant's weight multiplicity formula gives the multiplicity of the weight $μ$ in the irreducible representation with highest weight $λ$, which we denote by $m(λ,μ)$. Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over the Weyl group of the Lie algebra whose terms are determined via a vector partition function. The Weyl alternation set $\mathcal{A}(λ,μ)$ is the set of elements of the Weyl group that contribute nontrivially to the multiplicity $m(λ,μ)$. In this article, we prove that Weyl alternation sets are order ideals in the weak Bruhat order of the corresponding Weyl group. Specializing to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$, we give a complete characterization of the Weyl alternation sets $\mathcal{A}(\tildeα,μ)$, where $\tildeα$ is the highest root and $μ$ is a negative root, answering a question of Harry posed in 2024. We also provide some enumerative results that pave the way for our future work, where we aim to prove Harry's conjecture that the $q$-analog of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is $m_q(\tildeα,μ)=q^{r+j-i+1}+q^{r+j-i}-q^{j-i+1}$ when $μ=-(α_i+α_{i+1}+\cdots+α_{j})$ is a negative root of $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$.

External columns and chambers of vector partition functions
The vector partition function $p_A$ associated to a $d \times n$ matrix $A$ with integer entries is the function $\mathbb{Z}^d \to \mathbb{N}$ defined by $\mathbf{b} \to \#\{\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{N}^n : A\mathbf{x} = \mathbf{b}\}$. It is known that vector partition functions are piecewise quasi-polynomials whose domains of quasi-polynomiality are maximal cones (chambers) of a fan called the chamber complex of $A$. In this article we introduce \emph{external columns} and \emph{external chambers} of vector partition functions. Our main result is that (up to a saturation condition) the quasi-polynomial associated to a chamber containing external columns arises from a vector partition function with $k$ fewer equations and variables. In the case that the chamber is external -- that is, when the number of external columns in a chamber is as large as possible without being trivial -- the quasi-polynomial arises from a coin exchange problem. By exploiting this we are able to obtain a determinantal formula, characterize when the quasi-polynomial is polynomial, and show that in this case it is actually given by a negative binomial coefficient. We then apply these results to the enumeration of loopless multigraphs satisfying some degree conditions. Finally, we suggest a generalization to a result of Baldoni and Vergne for polynomials arising from chambers that we call \emph{semi-external chambers}.

Computing vector partition functions
A vector partition function is the number of ways to write a vector as a non-negative integer-coefficient sum of the elements of a finite set of vectors $Δ$. We present a new algorithm for computing closed-form formulas for vector partition functions as quasi-polynomials over a finite set of pointed polyhedral cones, implemented in the ``calculator'' computer algebra system. We include an exposition of previously known theory of vector partition functions. While our results are not new, our exposition is elementary and self-contained.

Estimating and computing Kronecker Coefficients: a vector partition function approach
We study the Kronecker coefficients $g_{λ, μ, ν}$ via a formula that was described by Mishna, Rosas, and Sundaram, in which the coefficients are expressed as a signed sum of vector partition function evaluations. In particular, we use this formula to determine formulas to evaluate, bound, and estimate $g_{λ, μ, ν}$ in terms of the lengths of the partitions $λ, μ$, and $ν$. We describe a computational tool to compute Kronecker coefficients $g_{λ, μ, ν}$ with $\ell(μ) \leq 2,\ \ell(ν) \leq 4,\ \ell(λ) \leq 8$. We present a set of new vanishing conditions for the Kronecker coefficients by relating to the vanishing of the related atomic Kronecker coefficients, themselves given by a single vector partition function evaluation. We give a stable face of the Kronecker polyhedron for any positive integers $m,n$. Finally, we give upper bounds on both the atomic Kronecker coefficients and Kronecker coefficients.
Kostant's partition function and magic multiplex juggling sequences
Published in Ann. Comb. 24, 439-473 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Kostant's partition function is a vector partition function that counts the number of ways one can express a weight of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ as a nonnegative integral linear combination of the positive roots of $\mathfrak{g}$. Multiplex juggling sequences are generalizations of juggling sequences that specify an initial and terminal configuration of balls and allow for multiple balls at any particular discrete height. Magic multiplex juggling sequences generalize further to include magic balls, which cancel with standard balls when they meet at the same height. In this paper, we establish a combinatorial equivalence between positive roots of a Lie algebra and throws during a juggling sequence. This provides a juggling framework to calculate Kostant's partition functions, and a partition function framework to compute the number of juggling sequences. From this equivalence we provide a broad range of consequences and applications connecting this work to polytopes, posets, positroids, and weight multiplicities.
Generating functions for vector partition functions and a basic recurrence relation

We define a generalized vector partition function and derive an identity for generating series of such functions associated with solutions of basic recurrence relation of combinatorial analysis. As a consequence, we obtain the generating function of the number of generalized lattice paths and a new version of Chaundy-Bullard identity for the vector partition function.

Counting integer points of flow polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Baldoni--Vergne volume and Ehrhart polynomial formulas for flow polytopes are significant in at least two ways. On one hand, these formulas are in terms of Kostant partition functions, connecting flow polytopes to this classical vector partition function fundamental in representation theory. On the other hand the Ehrhart polynomials can be read off from the volume functions of flow polytopes. The latter is remarkable since the leading term of the Ehrhart polynomial of an integer polytope is its volume! Baldoni and Vergne proved these formulas via residues. To reveal the geometry of these formulas, the second author and Morales gave a fully geometric proof for the volume formula and a part generating function proof for the Ehrhart polynomial formula. The goal of the present paper is to provide a fully geometric proof for the Ehrhart polynomial formula of flow polytopes.

Vector partition functions and Kronecker coefficients
Published in J. Phys. A: Mathematical and Theoretical, Volume 54, Number 20 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
The Kronecker coefficients are the structure constants for the restriction of irreducible representations of the general linear group $GL(n m)$ into irreducibles for the subgroup $GL(n)\times GL(m)$. In this work we study the quasipolynomial nature of the Kronecker function using elementary tools from polyhedral geometry. We write the Kronecker function in terms of coefficients of a vector partition function. This allows us to define a new family of coefficients, the atomic Kronecker coefficients. Our derivation is explicit and self-contained, and gives a new exact formula and an upper bound for the Kronecker coefficients in the first nontrivial case.

Geometric realizations and duality for Dahmen-Micchelli modules and De Concini-Procesi-Vergne modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an algebraic description of several modules and algebras related to the vector partition function, and we prove that they can be realized as the equivariant K-theory of some manifolds that have a nice combinatorial description. We also propose a more natural and general notion of duality between these modules, which corresponds to a Poincaré duality-type correspondence for equivariant K-theory.

A closed character formula for symmetric powers of irreducible representations
Published in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DMTCS) proceedings, 2010, 833-844 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a closed character formula for the symmetric powers $S^N V(λ)$ of a fixed irreducible representation $V(λ)$ of a complex semi-simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ by means of partial fraction decomposition. The formula involves rational functions in rank of $\mathfrak{g}$ many variables which are easier to determine than the weight multiplicities of $S^N V(λ)$ themselves. We compute those rational functions in some interesting cases. Furthermore, we introduce a residue-type generating function for the weight multiplicities of $S^N V(λ)$ and explain the connections between our character formula, vector partition functions and iterated partial fraction decomposition.

Towards computing vector partition functions by iterated partial fraction decomposition
We investigate the possibilities to calculate vector partition functions by means of iterated partial fraction decomposition, as suggested by Beck (2004). Particularly, for an important type of families of rational functions, we describe an algorithm to compute the numerators in their partial fraction decomposition "formally," i.e., as a formal expression in the parameter. We also analyze the type of generalized rational functions that appear during the execution of an algorithm based on iterated partial fraction decomposition and explain how to handle these objects.
Vector partition functions and index of transversally elliptic operators

Let G be a torus acting linearly on a complex vector space M, and let X be the list of weights of G in M. We determine the equivariant K-theory of the open subset of M consisting of points with finite stabilizers. We identify it to the space DM(X) of functions on the lattice of weights of G, satisfying the cocircuit difference equations associated to X, introduced by Dahmen--Micchelli in the context of the theory of splines in order to study vector partition functions. This allows us to determine the range of the index map from G-transversally elliptic operators on M to generalized functions on G and to prove that the index map is an isomorphism on the image. This is a setting studied by Atiyah-Singer which is in a sense universal for index computations.

Extension of the Bernoulli and Eulerian Polynomials of Higher Order and Vector Partition Function
Following the ideas of L. Carlitz we introduce a generalization of the Bernoulli and Eulerian polynomials of higher order to vectorial index and argument. These polynomials are used for computation of the vector partition function $W({\bf s},{\bf D})$, i.e., a number of integer solutions to a linear system ${\bf x} \ge 0, {\bf D x} = {\bf s}$. It is shown that $W({\bf s},{\bf D})$ can be expressed through the vector Bernoulli polynomials of higher order.

An explicit formulation for two dimensional vector partition functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Based on discrete truncated powers, the beautiful Popoviciu's formulation for restricted integer partition function is generalized. An explicit formulation for two dimensional multivariate truncated power functions is presented. Therefore, a simplified explicit formulation for two dimensional vector partition functions is given. Moreover, the generalized Frobenius problem is also discussed.

Vector partition function and representation theory
We apply some recent developments of Baldoni-Beck-Cochet-Vergne on vector partition function, to Kostant's and Steinberg's formulae, for classical Lie algebras $A\_r$, $B\_r$, $C\_r$, $D\_r$. We therefore get efficient {\tt Maple} programs that compute for these Lie algebras: the multiplicity of a weight in an irreducible finite-dimensional representation; the decomposition coefficients of the tensor product of two irreducible finite-dimensional representations. These programs can also calculate associated Ehrhart quasipolynomials.

Counting with rational generating functions
Published in Journal of Symbolic Computation 43 (2008), 75-91 • View PublicationBIB
We examine two different ways of encoding a counting function, as a rational generating function and explicitly as a function (defined piecewise using the greatest integer function). We prove that, if the degree and number of input variables of the (quasi-polynomial) function are fixed, there is a polynomial time algorithm which converts between the two representations. Examples of such counting functions include Ehrhart quasi-polynomials, vector partition functions, integer points in parametric polytopes, and projections of the integer points in parametric polytopes. For this last example, this algorithm provides the first known way to compute the explicit function in polynomial time. We rely heavily on results of Barvinok, and also of Verdoolaege, Seghir, Beyls, et al.
