Varieties of chain complexes and mixed dimer covers
A quiver representation consists of a collection of vector spaces along with a set of arrows, which are linear maps between these spaces. In this work, we study quiver representations in equioriented type $A$ which are also chain complexes; that is, in which consecutive arrows compose to zero. We show that orbits of these representations under a change of basis action are in bijection with mixed dimer covers of a $2 \times n$ grid graph. The latter object can be endowed with a partial order which is a distributive lattice, and we show that the degeneration order on the orbits of chain complexes is a coarsening of this partial order. In addition, we use recent matrix formulae of Claussen and Ovenhouse to enumerate these orbits. This also computes the Kostant partition function applied to height-restricted, type $A$ roots. When the dimension vector is uniform, we discuss a correspondence with paths of a beam of light bouncing between glass plates and give an explicit generating function.
Kostant--Kumar modules: presentation and multiplicities
Kostant--Kumar modules $K(λ,w,μ)$ are submodules of a tensor product $V(λ)\otimes V(μ)$ of irreducible highest weight modules over a symmetrizable Kac--Moody algebra, indexed by Weyl group elements $w$; their decomposition numbers $c^ν_{λμ}(w)$ refine ordinary tensor product multiplicities. We study them module-theoretically. We show that $c^ν_{λμ}(w)$ is computed by a natural quotient of the Kostant--Parthasarathy--Ranga Rao--Varadarajan multiplicity space, via orthogonal projection onto a Demazure module. For $\mathfrak{g}$ finite-dimensional semisimple or symmetric Kac--Moody, we present $K(λ,w,μ)$ by generators and relations, extending the presentation of Demazure modules due to Joseph, Polo and Mathieu. We apply the presentation to obtain upper bounds on $c^ν_{λμ}(w)$ and to study Schur positivity.
New Bounds for Integer Flows and Verma Modules, via Denormalized Lorentzian Laurent Series
The theory of log concave polynomials has recently been developed to study objects and problems in combinatorics and other subfields in mathematics. Particular classes of log concave polynomials called Lorentzian polynomials and denormalized and dually Lorentzian polynomials have been used to prove log concavity statements for various combinatorial sequences. This includes the strongest form of Mason's log concavity conjecture on the independent sets of matroids and the log concavity of sequences of Kostka numbers.
In this paper, we develop an analogous class of power series called denormalized Lorentzian (DL) Laurent series. This class is the natural generalization of DL polynomials to homogeneous power series with the benefit of capturing a number of combinatorial generating series including the Kostant partition function for integer flows of directed graphs. We then analyze specific DL Laurent series to obtain new bounds for integral flows on general directed acyclic graphs and new bounds for the dimensions of weight spaces of parabolic $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ Verma modules.
Weyl Groups and the Modified Kostant Game
This paper presents a generalization of the Kostant game, a combinatorial framework originally for generating positive roots in Lie algebras. By introducing an arbitrary multi-vertex modification, we prove that the resulting game configurations naturally biject with the minimal length representatives of parabolic quotients W/W_J. This yields a dynamical and algorithmic perspective on reduced words. Finally, we apply this framework to derive a novel root counting identity, formalize the Coxeter-theoretic foundation for combinatorial approaches to the Mukai conjecture, establish the regularity of reduced word languages via finite state automata, and dynamically construct Standard Young Tableaux.
Super-immanants and Littlewood correspondences
In this paper, we introduce the notion of super-immanants for supermatrices over a supercommutative algebra. Using the super Schur-Weyl duality we show that the super immanants play a significant role in covariant tensor representations of the general linear Lie superalgebra. Among various things, we obtain a supertrace formula for super-immanants, which generalizes Kostant's trace formula to the super setting. Furthermore, we show that the Littlewood correspondences between super-immanants and supersymmetric polynomials establish an isomorphism between their corresponding algebras.
On the $q$-multiplicity of sums of distinct simple roots of $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$
In combinatorial representation theory, Kostant's weight multiplicity formula $m(λ,μ)$ is a tool that provides a means of determining the multiplicity of a weight $μ$ in the adjoint representation of a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, and in this work we consider the case of $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$. In practice, performing calculations of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is computationally intense, as the number of terms in this alternating sum grows factorially as the rank $r$ increases, of which most terms provide zero contribution to the overall sum. In this work, we determine the Weyl alternation set, that is the terms in the alternating sum with nonzero contribution, for integral weights $λ$ the highest root of $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and $μ$ any nonempty collection of distinct simple roots. We show that the alternation set is enumerated by a product of Fibonacci numbers, with the product being dependent on the choice of distinct simple roots. Then we compute the weight $q$-multiplicity for any nonempty collection of distinct simple roots.
Counting Barcodes with the same Betti Curve
This paper considers an important inverse problem in topological data analysis (TDA): How many different barcodes produce the same Betti curve? Equivalently, given a function $β\colon [n]=\{1<\cdots< n\} \to \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$, how many different ways can we write $β$ as a sum of indicator functions supported on intervals in $[n]$? Our answer to this question is to connect persistent homology with the study of the Kostant partition function and the enumerative combinatorics for so-called "magic" juggling sequences studied by Ronald Graham and others. Specifically, we prove an equivalence between our inverse problem and corresponding statements in these other two settings. From an applications and statistics point of view, our work provides a quantification of how lossy the TDA pipeline is when moving from persistent homology to persistent Betti numbers.
Kostant's problem for permutations of shape $(n-2,1,1)$ and $(n-3,2,1)$
For a permutation $z$ in the symmetric group $\mathrm{S}_{n}$, denote by $L_{z}$ the corresponding simple highest weight module in the principal block of the BGG category $\mathcal{O}$ for the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_{n}(\mathbb{C})$. In this paper, we provide a combinatorial answer to Kostant's problem for the modules $L_{z}$ when $z$ has shape (associated Young diagram/integer partition via Robinson-Schensted correspondence) equal to $(n-2,1,1)$ or $(n-3,2,1)$. Moreover, we verify that certain closely related conjectures hold for such permutations, including the Indecomposability Conjecture, which states that applying any indecomposable projective functor to the corresponding simple highest weight module outputs either an indecomposable module or zero.
Weyl groups and the Kostant game
This paper establishes a novel combinatorial framework at the intersection of Lie theory and algebraic combinatorics, based on a generalization of the Kostant game. We begin by reviewing the foundations of root systems, the classification of Dynkin diagrams, and the structure of Weyl groups. Subsequently, we analyze the original Kostant game as a tool for generating positive roots, demonstrating its unique termination on simply-laced diagrams and its role in an alternative classification thereof.
The main contribution of this work -- which, to our knowledge, has not been studied before -- is a multi-vertex generalization of the game that allows for the simultaneous modification of multiple vertices of a Dynkin diagram. We prove that the resulting configurations of this new game establish a natural bijection with the elements of the quotient W/W_J of Weyl groups by parabolic subgroups. This formalism is applied to problems in algebraic geometry, specifically addressing cases of the Mukai conjecture via Hilbert polynomials, and is accompanied by a computational implementation in Java. These results offer new combinatorial perspectives for studying root counting problems, the regularity of reduced word languages, and the construction of Young Tableaux.
Kostant cuspidal permutations
In relation to Kostant's problem for simple highest weight modules over the general linear Lie algebra, we prove a persistence result for Kostant negative consecutive patterns. Inspired by it, we introduce the notion of a Kostant cuspidal permutation as a minimal Kostant negative consecutive pattern. It is shown that Kostant cuspidality is an invariant of a Kazhdan-Lusztig left cell. We describe four infinite families of Kostant cuspidal involutions, including a complete classification of Kostant cuspidal fully commutative involutions. In particular, we show that the number of new Kostant cuspidal elements can be arbitrarily large, when the rank grows. This provides some potential explanation why Kostant's problem is hard.
Pieri rule for classical groups, a new perspective
We study a new perspective on a certain Pieri rules for classical groups. Furthermore, we extend a fundamental theorem of Kostant concerning tensor products for classical groups. We show that a certain form of the Pieri rule is equivalent to the converse of this extended version of Kostant's theorem. In addition, we show an equivalence between the Pieri rule and the branching rule for general linear groups.
Kostant $ρ$-decomposition of homology I. Finite-dimensional representations
We give explicit, uniform formulas for the graded characters and total ranks of the Lie algebra homology of finite-dimensional representations in all classical types. In many cases, these compute the Tor groups of finite length modules over polynomial rings, and this is the first in a series of papers to investigate total rank conjectures from this perspective. These formulas refine and generalize the classical $ρ$-decomposition of Kostant, and in particular we prove that the characters involved exhibit three structural phenomena: divisibility (by a large power of 2), equidistribution, and uniform factorization formulas.
Quantum Littlewood correspondences
In the 1940s Littlewood formulated three fundamental correspondences for the immanants and Schur symmetric functions on the general linear group, which establish deep connections between representation theory of the symmetric group and the general linear group parallel to the Schur-Weyl duality. In this paper, we introduce the notion of quantum immanants in the quantum coordinate algebra using primitive idempotents of the Hecke algebra. By employing $R$-matrix techniques, we establish the quantum analog of Littlewood correspondences between quantum immanants and Schur functions for the quantum coordinate algebra. In the setting of the Schur-Weyl-Jimbo duality, we construct an exact correspondence between the Gelfand-Tsetlin bases of the irreducible representations of the quantum enveloping algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}(n))$ and Young's orthonormal basis of an irreducible representation of the Hecke algebra $\mathcal H_m$. This isomorphism leads to our trace formula for the quantum immanants, which settled the generalization problem
of $q$-analog of Kostant's formular for $λ$-immanants. As applications, we also derive general $q$-Littlewood-Merris-Watkins identities and $q$-Goulden-Jackson identities as special cases of the quantum Littlewood correspondence III.
Log-concavity of characters of parabolic Verma modules, and of restricted Kostant partition functions
In 2022, Huh-Matherne-Mészáros-St. Dizier showed that normalized Schur polynomials are Lorentzian, thereby yielding their continuous (resp. discrete) log-concavity on the positive orthant (resp. on their support, in type $A$ root directions). A reinterpretation of this result is that the characters of finite-dimensional simple representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ are denormalized Lorentzian (DL). In the same paper, these authors also showed that shifted characters of Verma modules over $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ are DL.
In this work we extend these results to a larger family of modules that subsumes both of the above: we show that shifted characters of all parabolic Verma modules over $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ are denormalized Lorentzian. The proof involves certain graphs on $[n+1]$; more strongly, we explain why the character (i.e., generating function) of the Kostant partition function of any loopless multigraph on $[n+1]$ is Lorentzian after shifting and normalizing.
We then show that parabolic Vermas form a "maximal" class with log-concave (hence DL) characters. Namely, log-concavity fails in greater generality along three natural directions: (1) it does not hold for every simple Lie type, (2) nor for a larger universal family of highest weight modules, the higher order Verma modules, even in type $A$, and (3) it does not always hold for important generalizations of Schur polynomials: the Jack and Macdonald polynomials.
Finally, we extend these results to parabolic (i.e. "first order") and higher order Verma modules over the semisimple Lie algebras $\oplus_{t=1}^T \mathfrak{sl}_{n_t+1}(\mathbb{C})$. We also partially resolve a conjecture of Huh et al on the DL property for integral highest weight simple modules.
The support of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is an order ideal in the weak Bruhat order
For integral weights $λ$ and $μ$ of a classical simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, Kostant's weight multiplicity formula gives the multiplicity of the weight $μ$ in the irreducible representation with highest weight $λ$, which we denote by $m(λ,μ)$. Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over the Weyl group of the Lie algebra whose terms are determined via a vector partition function. The Weyl alternation set $\mathcal{A}(λ,μ)$ is the set of elements of the Weyl group that contribute nontrivially to the multiplicity $m(λ,μ)$. In this article, we prove that Weyl alternation sets are order ideals in the weak Bruhat order of the corresponding Weyl group. Specializing to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$, we give a complete characterization of the Weyl alternation sets $\mathcal{A}(\tildeα,μ)$, where $\tildeα$ is the highest root and $μ$ is a negative root, answering a question of Harry posed in 2024. We also provide some enumerative results that pave the way for our future work, where we aim to prove Harry's conjecture that the $q$-analog of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is $m_q(\tildeα,μ)=q^{r+j-i+1}+q^{r+j-i}-q^{j-i+1}$ when $μ=-(α_i+α_{i+1}+\cdots+α_{j})$ is a negative root of $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$.
A study of nil Hecke algebras via Hopf algebroids
Hopf algebroids are generalizations of Hopf algebras to less commutative settings. We show how the comultiplication defined by Kostant and Kumar turns the affine nil Hecke algebra associated to a Coxeter system into a Hopf algebroid without an antipode. The proof relies on mixed dihedral braid relations between Demazure operators and simple reflections. For researchers new to Hopf algebroids we include additional examples from ring theory, representation theory, and algebraic geometry.
Tesler matrices and Lusztig data
We study asymptotics of Tesler matrices using Kostant pictures, as well as partial orders on these. We show that the Lusztig data partial order on Kostant pictures refines the 'merge' partial order on Kostant pictures, and that the merge partial order on Kostant pictures is equivalent to a partial order on Tesler matrices. This equivalence requires integral flow graphs. Using Kostant pictures we find logarithmic asymptotics of some families of Tesler matrices.
Capacity bounds on integral flows and the Kostant partition function
The type $A$ Kostant partition function is an important combinatorial object with various applications: it counts integer flows on the complete directed graph, computes Hilbert series of spaces of diagonal harmonics, and can be used to compute weight and tensor product multiplicities of representations. In this paper we study asymptotics of the Kostant partition function, improving on various previously known lower bounds and settling conjectures of O'Neill and Yip. Our methods build upon recent results and techniques of Brändén-Leake-Pak, who used Lorentzian polynomials and Gurvits' capacity method to bound the number of lattice points of transportation and flow polytopes. Finally, we also give new two-sided bounds using the Lidskii formulas from subdivisions of flow polytopes.

We use Kostant and Kumar's twisted group ring and its dual to formulate and prove a generalization of Nakada's colored hook formula for any Coxeter groups. For dominant minuscule elements of the Weyl group of a Kac--Moody algebra, this provides another short proof of Nakada's colored hook formula.
The Poisson degeneracy locus of a flag variety
We present a comprehensive study of the degeneracy loci of the full flag varieties of all complex semisimple Lie groups equipped with the standard Poisson structures. The reduced Poisson degeneracy loci are shown to stratify under the action of the canonical maximal torus into open Richardson varieties $\mathcal{R}_v^w$ for pairs of Weyl group elements $v \leq w$ that extend the covering relation of the Bruhat order. Four different combinatorial descriptions of those pairs are given, and it is shown that their Bruhat intervals are power sets. The corresponding closed Richardson varieties $\overline{\mathcal{R}_v^m}$ are shown to be isomorphic to $(\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^1)^d$ for $d \geq 0$ in a compatible way with the stratification. As a consequence, we obtain that the reduced Poisson degeneracy loci of all full flag varieties are connected, and all of their irreducible components are isomorphic to $(\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ for some $n \geq 0$; they are not equidimensional in general. Using the framework of projected Richardson varieties, these results are extended to all partial flag varieties. The top dimension of irreducible components of the reduced Poisson degeneracy locus in the full flag case is proved to be equal to the cardinality of Kostant's cascade of roots and the reflective length of the longest Weyl group element. It is shown that the Poisson degeneracy loci of flag varieties are not reduced in general.
