Möbius functions for pseudo-Levi subgroups in finite general linear and symplectic groups
In this paper, we compute the Möbius function on the set of pseudo-Levi subgroups containing a fixed maximal torus of two families of finite groups, $GL_n(q)$ and $Sp_{2n}(q)$, for some natural number $n$ and a prime power $q$. The Möbius function for the set of pseudo-Levi subgroups of a finite group $G$ is important for an explicit evaluation of the formula expressing the decomposition of tensor products of characters, as proved in Theorem 2 of the paper ''Multiplicity of characters of finite reductive groups and Drinfeld doubles'' [arXiv:2512.01432].

Rational Weyl group elements of odd type D
Voloshyn introduced rational Weyl group elements in connection with rational normal forms on complex reductive groups and conjectured that, in type $D_r$ with $r$ odd, their number is $2^r-1$. We prove a stronger structural statement. For $r\geq 5$ odd, the rational Weyl group elements in $W(D_r)$ are exactly the longest element $w_0$ together with two explicitly described signed cyclic elements $c_I$ and $d_I$ for every non-empty subset $I\subseteq\{1,\ldots,r-1\}$. Consequently the rationality graph $Γ(D_r)$ is two explicitly labelled Boolean-type halves glued at $w_0$, its number of vertices is $2^r-1$, and its only vertices of valency one are $c_{\{1\}}$ and $d_{\{1\}}$. The proof combines an acyclic two-level description of the rationality graphs $Γ(c_I)$ with a rigidity argument for all one-step rational descents from $w_0$. The latter uses Voloshyn's descent lemma, while all type-$D$ exclusions are given by explicit loops or two-cycles in the root-poset rationality graph.

Haiman's Conjecture and Springer's Representations
For any connected complex reductive group $G$ and element $z$ of its Weyl group $W$, we use work of Lusztig and Abreu-Nigro to compute the graded $W$-character of the intersection cohomology of any closed Lusztig variety for $z$ over the regular semisimple locus of $G$. We relate the resulting formula to unipotent Lusztig varieties, giving a new geometric model for unicellular LLT polynomials. We then consider Laurent polynomials $α_{ψ, G}^z$ indexed by irreducible characters $ψ$, encoding how our formula decomposes into ungraded characters arising from the Springer theory of $G$. From evidence in low rank, we conjecture that if $ψ$ is inflated from type $A$ in a particular way, then the nonzero coefficients of $α_{ψ, G}^z$ are positive and unimodal. This offers an answer to a 1993 question of Haiman about generalizing a conjecture he posed for symmetric groups. We also prove that the matrix formed by the $α_{ψ, G}^z$ is partially triangular, and that their positivity and unimodality properties are stable under inclusions of Levi subgroups.

Partial Resolutions and Noncrossing Combinatorics
For any finite reductive group, we compute the central elements in its Hecke algebra that arise from partial Springer resolutions via the Harish-Chandra transform. Of the two kinds of partial resolution, the larger is the more interesting case. We deduce formulas for associated Hecke traces, generalizing work of Wan-Wang beyond type $A$, and Deodhar-like decompositions of braid varieties that map to partial Springer resolutions. From the latter, we construct noncrossing sets that interpolate between rational Catalan and parking objects, generalizing our work with Galashin-Lam. In parallel, we establish new formulas for arbitrary $a$-degrees of the HOMFLYPT invariants of positive braid closures, from which we construct noncrossing sets for rational Kirkman numbers.

Dimension statistics of representations of finite groups
This paper discusses what the dimension data of irreducible representations of a finite group looks like in some specific cases, including unipotent and reductive groups over finite fields. The essence of our investigation is whether the dimension data of irreducible representations of a finite group can be ``geometerized'', to become equal to the cardinality of certain orbit spaces. The first part of this paper deals with nilpotent and reductive groups over finite fields, whereas the second part deals with the symmetric group $S_n$. The main conclusion that we want to bring out to contrast these two cases is that for reductive groups over finite fields, the dimension data is concentrated (in a statistical sense) in a neighborhood of the maximal dimension, whereas for the symmetric group, it is spread out.

Quadratic exchange equations for Coxeter matroids
Tropicalisation (with trivial coefficients) is a process that turns a polynomial equation into a combinatorial predicate on subsets of the set of variables. We show that for each minuscule representation of a simple reductive group, there is a set of quadratic equations cutting out the orbit of the highest weight vector whose tropicalisation characterises the set of Coxeter matroids for that representation which satisfy the strong exchange property.
Tropical reductive groups and principal bundles on metric graphs
We propose an elementary tropical analogue of a reductive group that combines the datum of a Weyl group and the tropicalization of a fixed maximal torus. For the classical groups, as well as $G_2$, these tropical reductive groups admit descriptions as tropical matrix groups that resemble their classical counterparts. Employing this perspective, we introduce tropical principal bundles on metric graphs and study their explicit presentations as pushforwards of line bundles along covers with symmetries and extra data. Our main result identifies the essential skeleton of the moduli space of semistable principal bundles on a Tate curve with its tropical analogue.

Counting factorizations of Singer cycles in linear and unitary groups
We count factorizations of Singer cycles as products of reflections in the families of special and general unitary and linear groups over a finite field. In the case of minimum-length factorizations, the resulting answer is a striking product formula resembling the count for minimum-length factorizations of Coxeter elements into reflections in complex reflections groups. Moreover, for minimum length, the answers for the unitary and linear groups exhibit the phenomenon of Ennola duality, where the number of factorizations in a unitary group over the field $\mathbb{F}_q$ is given by replacing `$q$' with `$-q$' in the corresponding answer for a linear group. We use the character theory of these groups to make this count, and in particular we employ the Deligne--Lusztig theory of characters for finite reductive groups.

Level-Rank Dualities for Finite Reductive Groups
This is an extended abstract of our work "Level-Rank Dualities from $Φ$-Cuspidal Pairs..." We present evidence for a family of surprising coincidences within the representation theory of a finite reductive group $G$: more precisely, dualities between blocks of cyclotomic Hecke algebras attached by Broué-Malle to $Φ$-cuspidal pairs of $G$, where the Hecke parameters are specialized not to the order of the underlying finite field, but to roots of unity. For the groups $G = \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbf{F}_q)$, these coincidences can be expressed very concretely in terms of the combinatorics of partitions, and the whole story recovers an avatar of the level-rank duality studied by Frenkel, Uglov, Chuang-Miyachi, and others.

A combinatorial interpretation of the Bernstein degree of unitary highest weight modules
Consider the $(\mathfrak{g}, K)$-modules $L_λ$ for unitary highest weight representations of the real reductive group $G_{\mathbb{R}} = \operatorname{U}(p,q)$, $\operatorname{Mp}(2n, \mathbb{R})$, or $\operatorname{O}^*(2n)$, where $\operatorname{Mp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$ denotes the metaplectic double cover of $\operatorname{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$. Let $k$ be a positive integer. Corresponding to $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ via Howe duality is the compact group $\operatorname{U}(k)$, $\operatorname{O}(k)$, or $\operatorname{Sp}(k)$, respectively, for which every irreducible representation $σ$ corresponds to a unique $L_λ = L_{λ(σ)}$. Nishiyama-Ochiai-Taniguchi (2001) expressed the Bernstein degree $\operatorname{Deg} L_{λ(σ)}$ as the product of $\dim σ$ and the degree of the associated variety of $L_{λ(σ)}$; this result is valid when $k \leq r :=$ the real rank of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$. In this paper, for arbitrary $k$, we give a new combinatorial interpretation $\operatorname{Deg} L_{λ(σ)} = \#(\mathcal{Q}_k(σ) \times \mathcal{P}_k)$, where $\mathcal{Q}_k(σ)$ is a certain set of semistandard tableaux, whose cardinality (for $k \geq r$) interpolates between $\dim σ$ and the dimension of the simple $K$-module with highest weight $λ(σ)$. The set $\mathcal{P}_k$ consists of certain plane partitions that encode the Hilbert series of the associated variety. We exhibit analogous sets $\mathcal{P}_k$ of plane partitions for all real reductive groups of Hermitian type, including the exceptional groups.

Alcove walk models for parabolic Mirković-Vilonen intersections and branching to Levi subgroups
This article establishes alcove walk models for intersections of Schubert varieties and partially semi-infinite orbits in the affine Grassmannian of a split reductive group (we call such intersections parabolic Mirković-Vilonen intersections). More precisely, we describe explicit cellular pavings of these intersections, indexed by certain positively-folded alcove walks. We prove a parametrization of the irreducible components of maximal possible dimension, in terms of alcove walks of maximal possible dimension. We then deduce a new combinatorial description of branching to Levi subgroups of irreducible highest weight representations, and in particular we give a new algorithm for computing the characters of such representations.

Stanley decompositions of modules of covariants
Let $H$ be a complex reductive group, with finite-dimensional representations $W$ and $U$. The module of covariants for $W$ of type $U$ is the space of all $H$-equivariant polynomial maps $\varphi: W \longrightarrow U$. In this paper, we take $H$ to be one of the classical groups $\operatorname{GL}(V)$, $\operatorname{O}(V)$, or $\operatorname{Sp}(V)$, where $W$ is a direct sum of copies of $V$ and $V^*$, and $U$ is an arbitrary rational representation (with $U$ restricted to exterior powers of $V$ in the $H= \operatorname{O}(V)$ case). Our main result gives uniform Stanley decompositions of these modules of covariants, with Stanley spaces parametrized by combinatorial objects we call jellyfish. As a corollary, we write down the Hilbert series as a finite sum of rational functions, each with a combinatorial interpretation in terms of lattice paths. Notably, these results do not rely on the module being Cohen-Macaulay. We further apply our methods to invariant rings for $\operatorname{SL}(V)$ and $\operatorname{SO}(V)$. Our proofs (for $H = \operatorname{GL}(V)$ and $\operatorname{Sp}(V)$) rely on previous work by Jackson on standard monomial theory for dual reductive pairs, since classical modules of covariants can be viewed via Howe duality as Harish-Chandra modules of unitary highest weight representations of a certain real reductive group. As a first step toward extending this program to arbitrary unitary highest weight representations (including those of the exceptional groups), we establish analogous results uniformly for the Wallach representations of type ADE.

The trianguline variety, tangent spaces and the Grothendieck-Springer resolution
By the work of Breuil-Hellmann-Schraen, we know that the trianguline variety contains crystalline companion points which are parametrised by pairs (w,w_sat) of permutations. We first define and study a certain combinatorial property of a pair (w',w) of permutations, linked to the Bruhat order, in the context of Weyl groups of root systems. We call good pairs the pairs satisfying this property (which is the vast majority of pairs) and bad pairs the other ones. We then give an exact formula for the dimension of the tangent space to the trianguline variety at (generic) crystalline companion points such that (w,w_sat) is a good pair. The method (due to Breuil-Hellmann-Schraen) is to first compute an analogous dimension for a local model of the trianguline variety built out of Grothendieck's simultaneous resolution. To achieve this, we prove a conjecture of Breuil-Hellmann-Schraen, describing the intersection of the closure of a Schubert cell with another Schubert cell on this local model (in the context of an arbitrary split reductive group), when this pair of cells is parametrised by a good pair of permutations. We give counter-examples to this conjecture for an infinite family of pairs of cells (associated to bad pairs).
Measuring the Space of Metaplectic Whittaker Functions
Whittaker functions are special functions that arise in $p$-adic number theory and representation theory. They may be defined on representations of reductive groups as well as their metaplectic covering groups: fascinatingly, many of their number theoretic applications survive the transition between the reductive and metaplectic cases. However, one notable difference is that the space of Whittaker functions on a reductive group over a nonarchimedean local field $F$ is one-dimensional, whereas this is no longer true in the metaplectic case. In a previous paper, the second author showed that the dimension of the space of Whittaker functions on an arbitrary $n$-fold metaplectic cover of $GL_r(F)$ can be counted in terms of the number of solutions to a particular system of linear Diophantine equations in terms of $n$ and $r$. In this paper, we calculate two precise formulae for $\dim(\mathfrak{W})$, one inspired by viewing this system as a homogenous specialization of an inhomogenous system and the other by the structure of the coroot lattice of $GL_r(F)$. Then we use these formulae to investigate a homomorphism between $\mathfrak{W}$ and a particular quantum group module, built by the second author in a previous paper, and show precisely when this map is well-defined for any choice of basis for $\mathfrak{W}$.

Total positivity in twisted product of flag varieties
We show that the totally nonnegative part of the twisted product of flag varieties of a Kac-Moody group admits a cellular decomposition, and the closure of each cell is a topological manifold with boundary. We also establish explicit parameterizations of each totally positive cell. In the special cases of double flag varieties and braid varieties, we show that the totally nonnegative parts are regular CW complexes homeomorphic to closed balls. Moreover, we prove that the link of any totally nonnegative double Bruhat cell in a reductive group is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to a closed ball, solving an open problem of Fomin and Zelevinsky.

Weight polytopes and saturation of Demazure characters
Published • View PublicationBIB
For $G$ a reductive group and $T\subset B$ a maximal torus and Borel subgroup, Demazure modules are certain $B$-submodules, indexed by elements of the Weyl group, of the finite irreducible representations of $G$. In order to describe the $T$-weight spaces that appear in a Demazure module, we study the convex hull of these weights - the Demazure polytope. We characterize these polytopes both by vertices and by inequalities, and we use these results to prove that Demazure characters are saturated, in the case that $G$ is simple of classical Lie type. Specializing to $G=GL_n$, we recover results of Fink, Mészáros, and St. Dizier, and separately Fan and Guo, on key polynomials, originally conjectured by Monical, Tokcan, and Yong.

Parabolic induction for Springer fibres
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a reductive group satisfying the standard hypotheses, with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. For each nilpotent orbit $\mathcal{O}_0$ in a Levi subalgebra $\mathfrak{g}_0$ we can consider the induced orbit $\mathcal{O}$ defined by Lusztig and Spaltenstein. We observe that there is a natural closed morphism of relative dimension zero from the Springer fibre over a point of $\mathcal{O}_0$ to the Springer fibre over $\mathcal{O}$, which induces an injection on the level of irreducible components. When $G = \operatorname{GL}_N$ the components of Springer fibres was classified by Spaltenstein using standard tableaux. Our main results explains how the Lusztig--Spaltenstein map of Springer fibres can be described combinatorially, using a new associative composition rule for standard tableaux which we call stacking.

On reductive subgroups of reductive groups having invariants in almost all representations
Let $G$ and $\tilde G$ be connected complex reductive Lie groups, $G$ semisimple. Let $Λ^+$ be the monoid of dominant weights for a positive root system $Δ^+$, and let $l(w)$ be the length of a Weyl group element $w$. Let $V_λ$ denote an irreducible $G$-module of highest weight $λ\inΛ^+$. For any closed embedding $ι:\tilde G\subset G$, we consider Property (A): $\quad\forallλ\inΛ^+,\exists q\in\mathbb{N}$ such that $V_{qλ}^{\tilde G}\ne0$. A necessary condition for (A) is for $G$ to have no simple factors to which $G$ projects surjectively. We show that this condition is sufficient if $\tilde G$ is of type ${\bf A}_1$ or ${\bf E}_8$. We define and study an integral invariant of a root system, $\ell_G=\min\{\ell^λ:λ\inΛ^+\setminus\{0\}\}$, where $\ell^λ=\min\{l(w):wλ\notin{\rm Cone}(Δ^+)\}$. We derive the following sufficient condition for (A), independent of $ι$: $$ \ell_G - \#\tildeΔ^+ > 0 \;\Longrightarrow\; (A). $$ We compute $\ell_G$ and related data for all simple $G$, except ${\bf E}_8$, where we obtain lower and upper bounds. We consider a stronger property (A-$k$) defined in terms of Geometric Invariant Theory, related to extreme values of codimensions of unstable loci, and derive a sufficient condition in the form $\ell_G - \#\tildeΔ^+ > k$. The invariant $\ell_G$ proves too week to handle $G=SL_n$ and we employ a companion $\ell_G^{\rm sd}$ to infer (A-$k$) for a larger class of subgroups. We derive corollaries on Mori-theoretic properties of GIT-quotients.

Combinatorics of Iwahori Whittaker Functions
We give a combinatorial evaluation of Iwahori Whittaker functions for unramified genuine principal series representations on metaplectic covers of the general linear group over a non-archimedean local field. To describe the combinatorics, we introduce new combinatorial data that we call colored data: colored Lusztig data, colored Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, and colored lattice models. We show that all three are equivalent. To achieve the result, we give an explicit Iwahori decomposition for the maximal unipotent subgroup of a split reductive group which gives the parametrization of the generalized Mirković-Vilonen cycles in the affine flag varieties and is of interest in itself. Our result is based and naturally extends Peter McNamara's evaluation of the metaplectic spherical Whittaker function in terms of Lusztig data.

Which Schubert Varieties are Hessenberg Varieties?
Published • View PublicationBIB
After proving that every Schubert variety in the full flag variety of a complex reductive group $G$ is a general Hessenberg variety, we show that not all such Schubert varieties are adjoint Hessenberg varieties. In fact, in types A and C, we provide pattern avoidance criteria implying that the proportion of Schubert varieties that are adjoint Hessenberg varieties approaches zero as the rank of $G$ increases. We show also that in type A, some Schubert varieties are not isomorphic to any adjoint Hessenberg variety.
