Partitions of canonical bases
We show that various partitions of the canonical basis of quantum groups constructed by Lusztig and by Kashiwara coincide. Using this partition, we show that the subset corresponding to open Richardson varieties equals to the intersection of the subsets corresponding to the Schubert cells. We also show that in type $A$, the weights from open Richardson varieties are saturated in the corresponding Bruhat interval polytope.

Recursive Formula for the Equations of Hessenberg Varieties
Hessenberg varieties are subvarieties of the flag variety, defined by containment conditions on flags with respect to a linear operator. The study of these varieties lies in the intersection of algebraic geometry, combinatorics, and representation theory. In this paper, we develop an algebro-geometric procedure for determining the closed subvariety structure of a Hessenberg variety $\mathcal{H}(X,h)$ in the flag variety for any linear operator $X$ and Hessenberg function $h$, by imposing a partial order on the Hessenberg functions and analyzing the relation of the corresponding Hessenberg varieties. In particular, we give a concrete recursive formula for determining all equations cutting out a given Hessenberg variety in each Schubert cell. As an application, we provide an alternative geometric proof of Tymoczko's results on the existence of affine pavings of a given Hessenberg variety and on the dimension count of its cells.

On Two Approaches to Cluster Structures on Partial Flag Varieties
Continuing our previous work, this paper closely studies the relationship between the cluster algebra structures on the coordinate ring of Schubert cells and those on the coordinate ring of partial flag varieties. We give a finite-type classification for these cluster structures and point out several results that were left open in our previous work.

Motivic Segre classes of Schubert cells and the connective formal group law
We use the connective formal group law to define a one-parameter ($β$-)deformation of the motivic Segre classes of Schubert cells in the $d$-step flag variety. This $β$-deformation specializes to the motivic Segre classes of Schubert cells when $β=1$ and to the Segre-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of Schubert cells when $β=0$. We define rational function representatives for the $β$-deformed classes in the $d=1$ case in terms of a solvable lattice model, and we prove a combinatorial formula for the structure constants in the $β$-deformed basis in the $d=1$ case using Knutson-Tao puzzles. The proof of the puzzle formula involves intertwiners for representations of the multi-parameter quantum group of type $\widehat{a}_2$. We show that our $β$-deformations can be viewed as quotients of canonical elements in a quotient of the equivariant algebraic cobordism ring of the cotangent bundle of the flag variety by proving that the canonical elements satisfy a GKM type condition.

Random Permutations from Bott-Samelson Varieties
Motivated by a recent random pipe dream model, we study a family of probability distributions on \(S_n\) arising from Bott--Samelson varieties over finite fields. More precisely, for a word \(R\), we consider the Bott--Samelson map \(π_R:\mathrm{BS}^R\to \mathcal{F}\ell_n\) and define a distribution \(\mathbb{P}_{R,q}\) by counting the \(\mathbb{F}_q\)-points in the inverse images of Schubert cells. For a suitable choice of parameters \(p_1=q/(1+q)\) and \(p_2=1/q\), this construction recovers a special case of the random pipe dream distribution. The main problem considered in this note is to determine which combinatorial properties of a reduced word are detected by the distribution \(\mathbb{P}_{R,q}\). We prove the stronger statement that, for arbitrary reduced words \(R_1,R_2\), the equality \(\mathbb{P}_{R_1,q}=\mathbb{P}_{R_2,q}\) as functions of \(q\) holds if and only if \(R_1\) and \(R_2\) lie in the same commutation class. In particular, equality of distributions already forces the two words to represent the same permutation. The proof combines the Bott--Samelson interpretation with Demazure products, commutation-class invariants, and Hecke-algebraic arguments.

Grove polynomials and $K$-theoretic quasisymmetry
We define the grove polynomials, a set-valued extension of forest polynomials. We show that they are $K$-theoretically dual to the quasisymmetric Schubert cells which pave the quasisymmetric flag variety, in the same way that Grothendieck polynomials are dual to Schubert cells in the complete flag variety. As a consequence, the finite truncations of the multi-fundamental quasisymmetric functions of Lam-Pylyavskyy acquire a geometric interpretation as $K$-theoretic representatives of quasisymmetric Schubert cells.

Motivic Chern Classes of Open Projected Richardson Varieties and of Affine Schubert Cells
The open projected Richardson varieties are images of the open Richardson varieties of the complete flag variety under the canonical projection to the partial flag variety. Our main result compares the Segre motivic Chern (SMC) classes of the open projected Richardson varieties with those of the affine Schubert cells by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. The main method is the recursive relation determined by the Demazure--Lusztig operators. As another application of this recursive relation, we relate the localization of the SMC classes to the twisted Kazhdan--Lusztig R-polynomials. In the case of Grassmannians, the open projected Richardson varieties are known as the open positroid varieties. We give a combinatorial formula for the SMC classes of these varieties.

Billey-Postnikov posets, rationally smooth Schubert varieties, and Poincaré duality
Billey-Postnikov (BP) decompositions govern when Schubert varieties $X(w)$ decompose as bundles of smaller Schubert varieties. We further develop the theory of BP decompositions and show that, in finite type, they can be recognized by pattern conditions and are indexed by the order ideals of a poset $\mathsf{bp}(w)$ that we introduce; we conjecture that this holds in any Coxeter group. We then apply BP decompositions to show that, when $X(w)$ is rationally smooth and $W$ simply laced, the Schubert structure constants $c_{uv}^w$ satisfy a triangularity property, yielding a canonical involution on the Schubert cells of $X(w)$ respecting Poincaré duality. We also classify the rationally smooth Bruhat intervals in finite type (other than $E$) which admit generalized Lehmer codes, answering questions and conjectures of Billey-Fan-Losonczy, Bolognini-Sentinelli, and Bishop-Milićević-Thomas. Finally, we show that rationally smooth Schubert varieties in infinite type need not have Grassmannian BP decompositions, disproving conjectures of Richmond-Slofstra and Oh-Richmond.

Dubrovin-Natanzon divisors on MM-curves
${\mathtt{MM}}$-curves are rational degenerations of ${\mathtt{M}}$-curves, i.e. they are maximal Mumford in the sense that they posses $g$ tropical cycles and exactly $g+1$ real ovals, where $g$ is the arithmetic genus. For rational curves the ``naive'' definition of divisors as formal sums of points requires a refinement. In the finite-gap theory of KP II equation the real regular solutions correspond to the Dubrovin-Natanzon (DN) divisors on ${\mathtt{M}}$-curves. In the case of real regular multiline KP II solitons, it was shown by the authors that for any given solution there exists a normalization time such that the spectral data are smooth DN divisor on ${\mathtt{MM}}$-curve. However, to show that DN divisors parameterize the; full positroid cell, it is necessary to fix the normalization time and consider both smooth and non-smooth divisors. In this paper we start such an investigation, and show that on ${\mathtt{MM}}$-curves whose dual graphs are trivalent Le-graphs of totally positive Schubert cells, the construction of non-smooth DN divisors requires combinations of just two basic types of blow-ups.

Lorentzian polynomials and matroids over triangular hyperfields 1: Topological aspects
Lorentzian polynomials serve as a bridge between continuous and discrete convexity, connecting analysis and combinatorics. In this article, we study the topology of the space $\mathbb{P}\textrm{L}_J$ of Lorentzian polynomials on $J$ modulo $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$, which is nonempty if and only if $J$ is the set of bases of a polymatroid. We prove that $\mathbb{P}\textrm{L}_J$ is a manifold with boundary of dimension equal to the Tutte rank of $J$, and more precisely, that it is homeomorphic to a closed Euclidean ball with the Dressian of $J$ removed from its boundary. Furthermore, we show that $\mathbb{P}\textrm{L}_J$ is homeomorphic to the thin Schubert cell $\textrm{Gr}_J(\mathbb{T}_q)$ of $J$ over the triangular hyperfield $\mathbb{T}_q$, introduced by Viro in the context of tropical geometry and Maslov dequantization, for any $q>0$. This identification enables us to apply the representation theory of polymatroids developed in a companion paper, as well as earlier work by the first and fourth authors on foundations of matroids, to give a simple explicit description of $\mathbb{P}\textrm{L}_J$ up to homeomorphism in several key cases. Our results show that $\mathbb{P}\textrm{L}_J$ always admits a compactification homeomorphic to a closed Euclidean ball. They can also be used to answer a question of Brändén in the negative by showing that the closure of $\mathbb{P}\textrm{L}_J$ within the space of all polynomials modulo $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$ is not homeomorphic to a closed Euclidean ball in general. In addition, we introduce the Hausdorff compactification of the space of rescaling classes of Lorentzian polynomials and show that the Chow quotient of a complex Grassmannian maps naturally to this compactification. This provides a geometric framework that connects the asymptotic structure of the space of Lorentzian polynomials with classical constructions in algebraic geometry.
Rowmotion and Echelonmotion
Given a linear extension $σ$ of a finite poset $R$, we consider the permutation matrix indexing the Schubert cell containing the Cartan matrix of $R$ with respect to $σ$. This yields a bijection $\mathrm{Ech}_σ\colon R\to R$ that we call echelonmotion; it is the inverse of the Coxeter permutation studied by Klász, Marczinzik, and Thomas. Those authors proved that echelonmotion agrees with rowmotion when $R$ is a distributive lattice. We generalize this result to semidistributive lattices. In addition, we prove that every trim lattice has a linear extension with respect to which echelonmotion agrees with rowmotion. We also show that echelonmotion on an Eulerian poset (with respect to any linear extension) is an involution. Finally, we initiate the study of echelon-independent posets, which are posets for which echelonmotion is independent of the chosen linear extension. We prove that a lattice is echelon-independent if and only if it is semidistributive. Moreover, we show that echelon-independent connected posets are bounded and have semidistributive MacNeille completions.
Representation theory for polymatroids
We develop a theory of representations of (discrete) polymatroids over tracts in terms of Plücker coordinates and suitable Plücker relations. As special cases, we recover polymatroids themselves as polymatroid representations over the Krasner hyperfield K and M-convex functions as polymatroid representations over the tropical hyperfield. We introduce and study several useful operations for polymatroid representations, such as translation and refined notions of minors and duality which have better properties than the existing definitions; for example, deletion and contraction become dual operations (up to translation) in our setting. We also prove an idempotency principle which asserts that polymatroids which are not translates of matroids are representable only over tracts that are idempotent in a certain specific sense (in particular -1 = 1). The space of all representations of a polymatroid J, which we call the thin Schubert cell of J, is represented by an algebraic object called {universal tract of J. When we restrict to just the 3-term Plücker relations, we obtain the weak thin Schubert cell, and passing to torus orbits yields the realization space. These are represented by the universal pasture and the foundation of J, respectively. We exhibit a canonical bijection between the universal tract and the universal pasture, which is new even in the case of matroids, and we show that the foundation of a polymatroid is generated by cross ratios. We also describe a (possibly incomplete) list of multiplicative relations between cross ratios. Thin Schubert cells and realization spaces are canonically embedded in certain tori. Over idempotent tracts, we show that thin Schubert cells contain a canonical torus orbit and split naturally as a product of the realization space with this distinguished torus.

A decomposition of Grassmannian associated with a hyperplane arrangement
The Grassmannian, which is the manifold of all $k$-dimensional subspaces in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, was decomposed through three equivalent methods connecting combinatorial geometries, Schubert cells and convex polyhedra by Gelfand, Goresky, MacPherson and Serganova. Recently, Liang, Wang and Zhao discovered a novel decomposition of the Grassmannian via an essential hyperplane arrangement, which generalizes the first two methods. However, their work was confined to essential hyperplane arrangements. Motivated by their research, we extend their results to a general hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{A}$, and demonstrate that the $\mathcal{A}$-matroid, the $\mathcal{A}$-adjoint and the refined $\mathcal{A}$-Schubert decompositions of the Grassmannian are consistent. As a byproduct, we provide a classification for $k$-restrictions of $\mathcal{A}$ related to all $k$-subspaces through two equivalent methods: the $\mathcal{A}$-matroid decomposition and the $\mathcal{A}$-adjoint decomposition.
Cell closures for two-row Springer fibers via noncrossing matchings
Springer fibers are a family of subvarieties of the flag variety parametrized by nilpotent matrices that are important in geometric representation theory and whose geometry encodes deep combinatorics. Two-row Springer fibers, which correspond to nilpotent matrices with two Jordan blocks, also arise in knot theory, in part because their components are indexed by noncrossing matchings. Springer fibers are paved by affines by intersection with appropriately-chosen Schubert cells. In the two-row case, we provide an elementary description of these Springer Schubert cells in terms of standard noncrossing matchings and describe closure relations explicitly. To do this, we define an operation called cutting arcs in a matching, which successively unnests arcs while ``remembering" the arc originally on top. We then prove that the boundary of the Springer Schubert cell corresponding to a matching consists of the affine subsets of cells corresponding to all ways of cutting arcs in that matching.

Orbits on a product of two flags and a line and the Bruhat Order, I
Let $G=GL(n)$ be the $n\times n$ complex general linear group and let $\mathcal{B}_{n}$ be its flag variety. The standard Borel subgroup $B$ of upper triangular matrices acts on the product $\mathcal{B}_{n}\times \mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ with finitely many orbits. In this paper, we study the $B$-orbits on the subvarieties $\mathcal{B}_{n}\times \mathcal{O}_{i}$, where $\mathcal{O}_{i}$ is the $B$-orbit on $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ containing the line through the origin in the direction of the $i$-th standard basis vector of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$. For each $i=1,\dots, n$, we construct a bijection between $B$-orbits on $\mathcal{B}_{n}\times\mathcal{O}_{i}$ and certain pairs of Schubert cells in $\mathcal{B}_{n}\times\mathcal{B}_{n}$. We also show that this bijection can be used to understand the Richardson-Springer monoid action on such $B$-orbits in terms of the classical monoid action of the symmetric group on itself. We also develop combinatorial models of these orbits and use these models to compute exponential generating functions for the sequences $\{|B\backslash(\mathcal{B}_{n}\times\mathcal{O}_{i})|\}_{n\geq 1}$ and $\{|B\backslash (\mathcal{B}_{n}\times \mathbb{P}^{n-1})|\}_{n\geq 1}$. In the sequel to this paper, we use the results of this paper to construct a correspondence between $B$-orbits on $\mathcal{B}_{n}\times\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ and a collection of $B$-orbits on the flag variety $\mathcal{B}_{n+1}$ of $GL(n+1)$ and show that this correspondence respects closures relations and preserves monoid actions. As a consequence both closure relations and monoid actions for all $B$-orbits on $\mathcal{B}_{n}\times\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ can be understood via the Bruhat order by using our results in [CE].

Chern Classes of Open Projected Richardson Varieties and of Affine Schubert Cells
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2025, Issue 19, October 2025, rnaf305 • View PublicationBIB
The open projected Richardson varieties form a stratification for the partial flag variety $G/P$. We compare the Segre--MacPherson classes of open projected Richardson varieties with those of the corresponding affine Schubert cells by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. In the case of the Grassmannian $G/P=\operatorname{Gr}_k(\mathbb{C}^n)$, the open projected Richardson varieties are known as open positroid varieties. We obtain symmetric functions that represent the Segre--MacPherson classes of these open positroid varieties, constructed explicitly in terms of pipe dreams for affine permutations.

Partial order on involutive permutations and double Schubert cells
As shown by A. Melnikov, the orbits of a Borel subgroup acting by conjugation on upper-triangular matrices with square zero are indexed by involutions in the symmetric group. The inclusion relation among the orbit closures defines a partial order on involutions. We observe that the same order on involutive permutations also arises while describing the inclusion order on B-orbit closures in the direct product of two Grassmannians. We establish a geometric relation between these two settings.
A Pieri type formula for motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells in Grassmannians
We prove a Pieri formula for motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells in the equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians, which is described in terms of ribbon operators on partitions. Our approach is to transform the Schubert calculus over Grassmannians to the calculation in a certain affine Hecke algebra. As a consequence, we derive a Pieri formula for Segre motivic classes of Schubert cells in Grassmannians. We apply the Pieri formulas to establish a relation between motivic Chern classes and Segre motivic classes, extending a well-known relation between the classes of structure sheaves and ideal sheaves. As another application, we find a symmetric power series representative for the class of the dualizing sheaf of a Schubert variety.

Chevalley formulae for the motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells and for the stable envelopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a Chevalley formula to multiply the motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells in a generalized flag manifold $G/P$ by the class of any line bundle $\mathcal{L}_λ$. Our formula is given in terms of the $λ$-chains of Lenart and Postnikov. Its proof relies on a change of basis formula in the affine Hecke algebra due to Ram, and on the Hecke algebra action on torus-equivariant K-theory of the complete flag manifold $G/B$ via left Demazure--Lusztig operators. We revisit some wall-crossing formulae for the stable envelopes in $T^*(G/B)$. We use our Chevalley formula, and the equivalence between motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells and K-theoretic stable envelopes in $T^*(G/B)$, to give formulae for the change of polarization, and for the change of slope for stable envelopes. We prove several additional applications, including Serre, star, and Dynkin, dualities of the Chevalley coefficients, new formulae for the Whittaker functions, and for the Hall--Littlewood polynomials. We also discuss positivity properties of Chevalley coefficients, and properties of the coefficients arising from multiplication by minuscule weights.

Schubert cells of mixed type in complex Lagrangian Grassmannians
We describe CW decompositions of complex Lagrangian Grassmannians, that contain as subcomplexes, CW decompositions of real Lagrangian Grassmannians by Schubert-Arnol'd cells. The degrees of attaching maps are explicitly computed in terms of quantities that can be read off from the corresponding shifted Young diagrams of mixed type. The signs are determined by a choice of lexicographical ordering on coordinates. As an immediate consequence, we obtain the homotopy extension property for real and complex Lagrangian Grassmannians. We also show some torsion classes in the integral homology of the real Lagrangian Grassmannian are contractible inside the complex Lagrangian Grassmannian.
