From Bruhat intervals to intersection lattices and a conjecture of Postnikov
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the conjecture of A. Postnikov that (A) the number of regions in the inversion hyperplane arrangement associated with a permutation $w\in \Sn$ is at most the number of elements below $w$ in the Bruhat order, and (B) that equality holds if and only if $w$ avoids the patterns 4231, 35142, 42513 and 351624. Furthermore, assertion (A) is extended to all finite reflection groups. A byproduct of this result and its proof is a set of inequalities relating Betti numbers of complexified inversion arrangements to Betti numbers of closed Schubert cells. Another consequence is a simple combinatorial interpretation of the chromatic polynomial of the inversion graph of a permutation which avoids the above patterns.

Prime ideals in the quantum grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider quantum Schubert cells in the quantum grassmannian and give a cell decomposition of the prime spectrum via the Schubert cells. As a consequence, we show that all primes are completely prime in the generic case where the deformation parameter q is not a root of unity. There is a torus H that acts naturally on the quantum grassmannian and the cell decomposition of the set of H-primes leads to a parameterisation of the H-spectrum via certain diagrams on partitions associated to the Schubert cells. Interestingly, the same parameterisation occurs for the non-negative cells in recent studies concerning the totally non-negative grassmannian. Finally, we use the cell decomposition to establish that the quantum grassmannian satisfies normal separation and catenarity.
Chern classes of Schubert cells and varieties

We give explicit formulas for the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of all Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian of $d$-planes in a vector space, and conjecture that these classes are effective. We prove this is the case for (very) small values of $d$.

Rook poset equivalence of Ferrers boards
Published • View PublicationBIB
A natural construction due to K. Ding yields Schubert varieties from Ferrers boards. The poset structure of the Schubert cells in these varieties is equal to the poset of maximal rook placements on the Ferrers board under the Bruhat order. We determine when two Ferrers boards have isomorphic rook posets. Equivalently, we give an exact categorization of when two Ding Schubert varieties have identical Schubert cell structures. This also produces a complete classification of isomorphism types of lower intervals of 312-avoiding permutations in the Bruhat order.

Classification of Ding's Schubert varieties: finer rook equivalence
Published in Canadian J. Math. 59, no. 1 (2007), 36-62 • View PublicationBIB
K. Ding studied a class of Schubert varieties X_λin type A partial flag manifolds, corresponding to integer partitions λand in bijection with dominant permutations. He observed that the Schubert cell structure of X_λis indexed by maximal rook placements on the Ferrers board B_λ, and that the integral cohomology groups H^*(X_λ; Zz), H^*(X_μ; Zz) are additively isomorphic exactly when the Ferrers boards B_λ, B_μsatisfy the combinatorial condition of rook-equivalence. We classify the varieties X_λup to isomorphism, distinguishing them by their graded cohomology rings with integer coefficients. The crux of our approach is studying the nilpotence orders of linear forms in the cohomology ring.

Oriented Lagrangian Orthogonal Matroid Representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we extend the theory of oriented matroids to Lagrangian orthogonal matroids and their representations, and give a completely natural transformation from a representation of a classical oriented matroid to a representation of the same oriented matroid considered as a Lagrangian orthogonal matroid. Classical concepts of orientation and this extension may both be thought of as stratifications of thin Schubert cells into unions of connected components.
Oriented Lagrangian Matroids

In this paper we present a definition of oriented Lagrangian symplectic matroids and their representations. Classical concepts of orientation and this extension may both be thought of as stratifications of thin Schubert cells into unions of connected components. The definitions are made first in terms of a combinatorial axiomatisation, and then again in terms of elementary geometric properties of the Coxeter matroid polytope. We also generalise the concept of rank and signature of a quadratic form to symplectic Lagrangian matroids in a surprisingly natural way.

Recognizing Schubert cells
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper focuses on the properties of Schubert cells as quasi-projective subvarieties of a generalized flag variety. More specifically, we investigate the problem of distinguishing between different Schubert cells using vanishing patterns of generalized Plucker coordinates.

Skew-symmetric Vanishing Lattices and Intersections of Schubert Cells
We prove that the number of connected components in the intersection of two open opposite Schubert cells in the variety of complete real n-dimensional flags equals 3*2^{n-1} for n>5.
