We study the distribution of the number of permutations with a given periodic up-down sequence w.r.t. the last entry, find exponential generating functions and prove asymptotic formulas for this distribution.

We study the number of real rational degree n functions (considered up to linear fractional transformations of the independent variable) with a given set of 2n-2 distinct real critical values. We present a combinatorial reformulation of this number and pose several related questions.
Cluster algebras and Poisson geometry
We introduce a Poisson variety compatible with a cluster algebra structure and a compatible toric action on this variety. We study Poisson and topological properties of the union of generic orbits of this toric action. In particular, we compute the number of connected components of the union of generic toric orbits for cluster algebras over real numbers. As a corollary we compute the number of connected components of refined open Bruhat cells in Grassmanians G(k,n) over real numbers.
Restricted permutations and Chebyshev polynomials
We study generating functions for the number of permutations in $\SS_n$ subject to two restrictions. One of the restrictions belongs to $\SS_3$, while the other to $\SS_k$. It turns out that in a large variety of cases the answer can be expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

We study generating functions for the number of permutations on n letters avoiding 132 and an arbitrary permutation $τ$ on k letters, or containing $τ$ exactly once. In several interesting cases the generating function depends only on k and is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

A permutation is called layered if it consists of the disjoint union of substrings (layers) so that the entries decrease within each layer, and increase between the layers. We find the generating function for the number of permutations on $n$ letters avoiding $(1,2,3)$ and a layered permutation on $k$ letters. In the most interesting case of two layers, the generating function depends only on $k$ and is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

Let f_n^r(k) be the number of 132-avoiding permutations on n letters that contain exactly r occurrences of 12... k, and let F_r(x;k) and F(x,y;k) be the generating functions defined by $F_r(x;k)=\sum_{n\gs0} f_n^r(k)x^n$ and $F(x,y;k)=\sum_{r\gs0}F_r(x;k)y^r$. We find an explcit expression for F(x,y;k) in the form of a continued fraction. This allows us to express F_r(x;k) for $1\ls r\ls k$ via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

We obtain an explicit expression for the number of ramified coverings of the sphere by the torus with given ramification type for a small number of ramification points, and conjecture this to be true for an arbitrary number of ramification points. In addition, the conjecture is proved for simple coverings of the sphere by the torus. We obtain corresponding expressions for surfaces of higher genera for a small number of ramification points, and conjecture the general form for this number in terms of a symmetric polynomial that appears to be new. The approach involves the analysis of the action of a transposition to derive a system of linear partial differential equations that give the generating series for the desired numbers.
Skew-symmetric Vanishing Lattices and Intersections of Schubert Cells
We prove that the number of connected components in the intersection of two open opposite Schubert cells in the variety of complete real n-dimensional flags equals 3*2^{n-1} for n>5.
