On cluster deep loci in double Bruhat cells
We study deep loci for the reduced-word Berenstein-Fomin-Zelevinsky cluster atlas on type-A double Bruhat cells. As defined in CGSS24, for a seed collection on a cluster variety X, the deep locus is the complement of the union of all corresponding cluster tori. We focus on double Bruhat cells G(u,v) for G = SL(n). Our main results are several theorems describing the structure of these deep loci, including their interaction with the Poisson structure, the relationships between the deep loci of different cells, and a tracking formula that allows us to compute the reduced-word deep locus of a cell from a lower-dimensional one. The paper also includes explicit low-rank calculations for double Bruhat cells in SL(3) and Borel double Bruhat cells in SL(4). Finally, we discuss the relationship between these results and some general properties of deep loci.
Noncommutative Cluster Varieties and Moduli Spaces of Local Systems
In this article, we construct noncommutative cluster varieties, $\mathcal{A}_{R,S}$, for each reduced root system $R$ and marked surface $S$ simultaneously generalizing the cluster varieties of Fock-Goncharov, Li, Goncharov-Shen, Berenstein-Retakh, Goncharov-Kontsevich, and our previously introduced polygonal cluster algebras. Additionally, we define a large class of algebraic groups, we call Jordan split groups. Given a reduced root system $R$ and a family of Jordan algebras, the Lie algebra for $G$ is constructed by unifying the Tits-Kantor-Koecher construction for a single Jordan algebra with the construction of a split Lie algebra.
The notion of Jordan split groups is closely related to a grading of its Lie algebra by the root system $R$. We show that these gradings are usually induced by a choice of standard parabolic subalgebra $\mathfrak{p}_Θ$ and we classify $R$-graded pairs $(G,Θ)$ via a condition depending only on the subset $Θ\subset Δ$ of the set of simple roots. Next, we define Jordan algebra points of $\mathcal{A}_{R,S}$ which parameterize $G$-local systems on $S$ with boundary decoration related to cosets $G/U_Θ$ when $G$ is Jordan split of type $R$. When $S$ is a disk, points of $\mathcal{A}_{R,S}$ parameterize configurations of decorated flags. We use this to give noncommutative cluster structures on the double $R$-Bruhat cells of $G$, generalizing the cluster algebras of Berenstein-Fomin-Zelevinsky. When each Jordan algebra is formally real, we say that $G$ has a positive structure with respect to $Θ$. This defines a positive semigroup in $G$. For real algebraic groups, the pairs $(G,Θ)$ which have positive structures are exactly those which admit a positive structure as defined by Guichard-Wienhard and we give algebraic proofs of many of the properties of positive configurations of flags and of positive representations.
Total positivity and symmetric spaces
We define a notion of total positivity for the symmetric space $G/K$ by taking the Hausdorff closure of the image of Lusztig's totally positive part $G_{>0}$ in $G/K$. We introduce double Bruhat cells for the symmetric space and define their totally positive pieces. We prove a cell decomposition of the totally nonnegative symmetric space, give explicit positive parametrizations of all cells, establish closure relations, and show that the transition maps between the two natural families of parametrizations are subtraction-free.
Total positivity in twisted flag varieties
Let $G$ be a Kac-Moody group, split over $\mathbb R$. The totally nonnegative part of $G$ and its (ordinary) flag variety $G/B^+$ was introduced by Lusztig. It is known that the totally nonnegative parts of $G$ and $G/B^+$ have remarkable combinatorial and topological properties.
In this paper, we consider the totally nonnegative part of the $J$-twisted flag variety $G/{}^J B^+$, where ${}^J B^+$ is the Borel subgroup opposite to $B^+$ in the standard parabolic subgroup $P_J^+$ of $G$. The $J$-twisted flag varieties include the ordinary flag variety $G/B^+$ as a special case. Our main result show that the totally nonnegative part of $G/{}^J B^+$ decomposes into cells, and the closure of each cell is a regular CW complex. This generalizes the work of Galashin-Karp-Lam \cite{GKL22} and the joint work of Bao with the first author \cite{BH24} for ordinary flag varieties.
As an application, we deduce that the totally nonnegative part of the double flag variety $G/B^+ \times G/B^-$ with respect to the diagonal $G$-action has similar nice properties. We also establish some connections between the totally nonnegative part of the double flag with the canonical basis of the tensor product of a lowest weight module with a highest weight module of $G$.
As another application, we show that the link of identity in a totally nonnegative reduced double Bruhat cell of $G$ is a regular CW complex. This generalizes the work of Hersh \cite{Her14} on the link of $U_{\geq0}^-$ and gives a positive answer to an open question of Fomin and Zelevinsky.
Comparing cluster algebras on braid varieties
Braid varieties parametrize linear configurations of flags with transversality conditions dictated by positive braids. They include and generalize reduced double Bruhat cells, positroid varieties, open Bott-Samelson varieties, and Richardson varieties, among others. Recently, two cluster algebra structures were independently constructed in the coordinate rings of braid varieties: one using weaves and the other using Deodhar geometry. The main result of the article is that these two cluster algebras coincide. More generally, our comparative study matches the different concepts and results from each approach to the other, both on the combinatorial and algebraic geometric aspects.
Upper cluster structure on Kac--Moody Richardson varieties
We show coordinate rings of open Richardson varieties are upper cluster algebras for any symmetrizable Kac--Moody type. We further show the coordinate rings of (generalized) open Richardson varieties on the twisted product of flag varieties are upper cluster algebras for any symmetrizable Kac--Moody type. This includes, as special cases, reduced double Bruhat cells, Bott-Samelson varieties, braid varieties. Our results generalize various results by Casals--Gorsky--Gorsky--Le--Shen--Simental and Galashin--Lam--Sherman-Bennett--Speyer in finite types.
Homotopy Type of Intersections of Real Bruhat Cells in Dimension 6
In this work, we investigate the arbitrary intersection of real Bruhat cells. Such objects have attracted interest from various authors, particularly due to their appearance in different contexts: such as in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory and in the study of locally convex curves. We study the homotopy type of the intersection of two real Bruhat cells. This homotopy type is the same as that of an explicit submanifold of the group of real lower triangular matrices with diagonal entries equal to 1. For $(n+1)\times(n+1)$ matrices with $n\leq4$, these submanifolds are the disjoint union of contractible connected components. Our focus is on such intersections for $6\times6$ real matrices. For this, we study the connected components of Bruhat cells for permutations $σ\in\Sn_6$ with at most 12 inversions. We make use of the structure of the dual CW complexes associated with these components. We show that for permutations with at most 12 inversions, with the exception of $σ=[563412]$ , all connected components are contractible. Furthermore, for $σ=[563412]$, we identify new non-contractible connected components with the homotopy type of the circle.
Generic pipe dreams, lower-upper varieties, and Schwartz-MacPherson classes
We recall the lower-upper varieties from [Knutson '05] and give a formula for their equivariant cohomology classes, as a sum over generic pipe dreams. We recover as limits the classic and bumpless pipe dream formulae for double Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct, we obtain a formula for the degree of the $n$th commuting variety as a sum of powers of 2. Generic pipe dreams also appear in the Segre-Schwarz-MacPherson analogue of the AJS/Billey formula, and when computing the Chern-Schwarz-MacPherson class of the orbit $B_- w B_+ \subseteq Mat_{k\times n}$ or of a double Bruhat cell $B_-u B_+ \cap B_+ v B_-$.
Generalized Bäcklund-Darboux transformations for Coxeter-Toda systems on simple Lie groups
We derive the cluster structure on the conjugation quotient Coxeter double Bruhat cells of a simple Lie group from that on the double Bruhat cells of the corresponding adjoint Lie group given by Fock and Goncharov using the notion of amalgamation given by Fock and Goncharov, and Williams, thereby generalizing the construction developed by Gekhtman \emph{et al}. We will then use this cluster structure on the conjugation quotient Coxeter double Bruhat cells to construct generalized Bäcklund-Darboux transformations between two Coxeter-Toda systems on simple Lie groups in terms of cluster mutations, thereby generalizing the construction developed by Gekhtman \emph{et al}. We show that these generalized Bäcklund-Darboux transformations preserve Hamiltonian flows generated by the restriction of the trace function of any representation of the simple Lie group, from which we deduce that the family of Coxeter-Toda systems on a simple Lie group forms a single cluster integrable system. Finally, we also develop network formulations of the Coxeter-Toda Hamiltonians for the classical Lie groups, and use these network formulations to obtain combinatorial formulas for these Coxeter-Toda Hamiltonians.
Planar networks and simple Lie groups beyond type A
The general linear group $GL_{n}$, along with its adjoint simple group $PGL_n$, can be described by means of weighted planar networks. In this paper we give a network description for simple Lie groups of types $B$ and $C$. The corresponding networks are axially symmetric modulo a sequence of cluster mutations along the axis of symmetry. We extend to this setting the result of Gekhtman, Shapiro, and Vainshtein on the Poisson property of Postnikov's boundary measurement map. We also show that $B$ and $C$ type networks with positive weights parametrize the totally nonnegative part of the respective group. Finally, we construct network parametrizations of double Bruhat cells in symplectic and odd-dimensional orthogonal groups, and identify the corresponding face weights with Fock-Goncharov cluster coordinates.
Relative cluster categories and Higgs categories with infinite-dimensional morphism spaces
Cluster algebras *with coefficients* are important since they appear in nature as coordinate algebras of varieties like Grassmannians, double Bruhat cells, unipotent cells, ... . The approach of Geiss-Leclerc-Schröer often yields Frobenius exact categories which allow to categorify such cluster algebras. In previous work, the third-named author has constructed Higgs categories and relative cluster categories in the relative Jacobi-finite setting (arXiv:2109.03707). Higgs categories generalize the Frobenius categories used by Geiss-Leclerc-Schröer.
In this article, we construct the Higgs category and the relative cluster category in the relative Jacobi-infinite setting under suitable hypotheses. These cover for example the case of Jensen-King-Su's Grassmannian cluster category. As in the relative Jacobi-finite case, the Higgs category is no longer exact but still extriangulated in the sense of Nakaoka-Palu. We also construct a cluster character refining Plamondon's.
In the appendix, Chris Fraser and the second-named author categorify quasi-cluster morphisms using Frobenius categories. A recent application of this result is due to Matthew Pressland, who uses it to prove a conjecture by Muller-Speyer.
MV polytopes and reduced double Bruhat cells
When $G$ is a complex reductive algebraic group, MV polytopes are in bijection with the non-negative tropical points of the unipotent group of $G$. By fixing $w$ from the Weyl group, we can define MV polytopes whose highest vertex is labelled by $w$. We show that these polytopes are in bijection with the non-negative tropical points of the reduced double Bruhat cell labelled by $w^{-1}$. To do this, we define a collection of generalized minor functions $Δ_γ^\text{new}$ which tropicalize on the reduced Bruhat cell to the BZ data of an MV polytope of highest vertex $w$.
We also describe the combinatorial structure of MV polytopes of highest vertex $w$. We explicitly describe the map from the Weyl group to the subset of elements bounded by $w$ in the Bruhat order which sends $u \mapsto v$ if the vertex labelled by $u$ coincides with the vertex labelled by $v$ for every MV polytope of highest vertex $w$. As a consequence of this map, we prove that these polytopes have vertices labelled by Weyl group elements less than $w$ in the Bruhat order.
Total positivity in twisted product of flag varieties
We show that the totally nonnegative part of the twisted product of flag varieties of a Kac-Moody group admits a cellular decomposition, and the closure of each cell is a topological manifold with boundary. We also establish explicit parameterizations of each totally positive cell.
In the special cases of double flag varieties and braid varieties, we show that the totally nonnegative parts are regular CW complexes homeomorphic to closed balls. Moreover, we prove that the link of any totally nonnegative double Bruhat cell in a reductive group is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to a closed ball, solving an open problem of Fomin and Zelevinsky.
Braid variety cluster structures, I: 3D plabic graphs
We introduce $3$-dimensional generalizations of Postnikov's plabic graphs and use them to establish cluster structures for type $A$ braid varieties. Our results include known cluster structures on open positroid varieties and double Bruhat cells, and establish new cluster structures for type $A$ open Richardson varieties.
On exchange matrices from string diagrams
Inspired by Fock-Goncharov's amalgamation procedure \cite{Fock-Goncharov-2006}, Shen-Weng introduced string diagrams in \cite{Shen-Weng-2021}, which are very useful to describe many interesting skew-symmetrizable matrices closely related with Lie theory. In this paper, we prove that the skew-symmetrizable matrices from string diagrams are in the smallest class $\mathcal P^\prime$ of skew-symmetrizable matrices containing the $1\times 1$ zero matrix and closed under mutations and source-sink extensions. This result applies to the exchange matrices of cluster algebras from double Bruhat cells, unipotent cells, double Bott-Samelson cells and so on.
Our main result can be used to explain why many skew-symmetrizable matrices from Lie theory have reddening sequences. It can be also used to prove some interesting results regarding non-degenerate potentials on many quivers from Lie theory.

We study defining inequalities of string cones via a potential function on a reduced double Bruhat cell. We give a necessary criterion for the potential function to provide a minimal set of inequalities via tropicalization and conjecture an equivalence.
Double Rim Hook Cluster Algebras
We describe an infinite family of non-Plücker cluster variables inside the double Bruhat cell cluster algebra defined by Berenstein, Fomin, and Zelevinsky. These cluster variables occur in a family of subalgebras of the double Bruhat cell cluster algebra which we call Double Rim Hook (DRH) cluster algebras. We discover that all of the cluster variables are determinants of matrices of special form. We conjecture that all the cluster variables of the double Bruhat-cell cluster algebra have similar determinant form. We notice the resemblance between our staircase diagram and Auslander-Reiten quivers.

Mehta and van der Kallen put a Frobenius splitting on the type A cotangent bundle $T^* GL_n/B$, thereby defining a stratification by compatibly split subvarieties, and they determined a few of the elements of this stratification. We embed $T^* GL_n/B$ as a stratum in a larger stratified (and Frobenius split) space $GL_n/B \times Mat_n$ whose stratification we determine, thereby giving a full description of the one of Mehta-van der Kallen. The main technique is to endow $GL_n/B \times Mat_n$ with a Bruhat atlas, covering it with open sets that are stratified-isomorphic to Bruhat cells (in $GL_{2n}/B_{2n}$). Among the consequences are that each stratum closure is normal and Cohen-Macaulay.
On the homotopy type of intersections of two real Bruhat cells

Real Bruhat cells give an important and well studied stratification of such spaces as $GL_{n+1}$, $Flag_{n+1} = SL_{n+1}/B$, $SO_{n+1}$ and $Spin_{n+1}$. We study the intersections of a top dimensional cell with another cell (for another basis). Such an intersection is naturally identified with a subset of the lower nilpotent group $Lo_{n+1}^{1}$. We are particularly interested in the homotopy type of such intersections. In this paper we define a stratification of such intersections. As a consequence, we obtain a finite CW complex which is homotopically equivalent to the intersection.
We compute the homotopy type for several examples. It turns out that for $n \le 4$ all connected components of such subsets of $Lo_{n+1}^1$ are contractible: we prove this by explicitly constructing the corresponding CW complexes. Conversely, for $n \ge 5$ and the top permutation, there is always a connected component with even Euler characteristic, and therefore not contractible. This follows from formulas for the number of cells per dimension of the corresponding CW complex. For instance, for the top permutation $S_6$, there exists a connected component with Euler characteristic equal to $2$. We also give an example of a permutation in $S_6$ for which there exists a connected component which is homotopically equivalent to the circle $S^1$.
The Universal Valuation of Coxeter Matroids

Coxeter matroids generalize matroids just as flag varieties of Lie groups generalize Grassmannians. Valuations of Coxeter matroids are functions that behave well with respect to subdivisions of a Coxeter matroid into smaller ones. We compute the universal valuative invariant of Coxeter matroids. A key ingredient is the family of Coxeter Schubert matroids, which correspond to the Bruhat cells of flag varieties. In the process, we compute the universal valuation of generalized Coxeter permutohedra, a larger family of polyhedra that model Coxeter analogues of combinatorial objects such as matroids, clusters, and posets.
